Carl Bjerknes studied at Christiania (later Oslo), Göttingen and Paris. Dirichlet lectured to him on hydrodynamics and he became interested in that topic. He worked all his life on the goal of developing a theory of hydrodynamic phenomena which included Maxwell's electrodynamic theory. His work is an important contribution but he did not achieve his goal.
