Bers (always known as Lipa) studied at Riga, Zurich and Prague. His doctorate is from Prague where he studied under Karl Loewner and wrote a thesis on potential theory in 1938.

In 1938 he fled to Paris, then in 1940 to the USA. He was appointed to Brown University but he also worked at Princeton, the Courant Institute in New York and Columbia University.

Bers worked on Teichmüller theory, pseudoanalytic functions, quasiconformal mappings and Kleinian groups.
