Sergi Bernstein received his doctorate in Paris, then taught at Khrakov University for 25 years. His most important work was in the theory of probability.

He generalised Lyapunov's conditions for the central limit theorem and worked on, what are today called, Bernstein polynomials and Bernstein's inequality. He attempted an axiomatisation of probability theory.
