Paul Appell became a life-long friend of Poincaré while at Nancy. He married Amelie, niece of Bertrand and of Hermite and cousin of Emile Picard. One of his three daughters married Borel.

Appell wrote on projective geometry, algebraic functions, differential equations and complex analysis. In his later life he turned to mechanics.
