ZCheck v0.3 Copyright (c) 1993 George McBay All Rights Reserved CONTENTS: I. Requirements (What you need to play ZCheck) II. Legal (Legal issues regarding ZCheck) III. Supportware (What is Supportware? Why was ZCheck released under Supportware?) IV. Changes (Changes from v0.1) V. Future (What the future might bring) VI. Game Instructions (How to play the game) I. "Requirements" ZCheck v0.3 requires a Commodore-Amiga computer running WorkBench v2.04 or higher and two human players. (In the future a computer-play option may be available depending upon support} of this program.) II. "Legal" ZCheck v0.3 is Copyright (© 1993) by George McBay. ZCheck v0.3 is provided AS-IS. I make no guarantees regarding this program. I am not responsible for anything that goes wrong due to it's usage. This program is mostly freely distributable. It cannot, however, be uploaded to services which claim copyrights over stored files and may not be included on any disk which sells for more than $10.00 (10 US Dollars). III. "Supportware" I am releasing ZCheck under the concept of "Supportware." Because I am not certain the Amiga community wants a shareware game of checkers, I decided to program the basics of a checkers game and release it. If you would like to support future development of ZCheck, I ask that you please send some amount of money (the amount is totally up to you and what you think the development is worth to you). Please don't think I will be offended if you send small amounts of money...any amount will help. And please try your best to support this program, without your support it is hard for me to justify spending so much of my free time writing programs such as this. If there is enough support for ZCheck, I will release future upgrades through the same channels this version was released. You may send Internet Electronic Mail to the address given below to find out what the latest release version of the program is. We can also arrange a way of getting the latest release to you if you have no other access to it. To support this program, please send some amount of money to: George McBay 97 Conwell Ave. Somerville, MA 02144 If you want a response regarding your questions or comments either include a self-addressed stamped envelope or: send Internet E-Mail to: gfm@gnu.ai.mit.edu. IV. "Changes" Changes from v0.1 to v0.3 of ZCheck: o The graphics updates are now a lot less annoying on slower systems. o NonFatal and Fatal Errors now display Amiga System Requesters on the current window to let you know of problems. Previously it would write the problems to stdout creating a console window if none existed. o Informational text messages appear to let the player know about Double Jumps, etc. o Forced-jump is now available in the game. You can turn off the Forced jumps via the menu system. o The colors of the checkers were switched to reflect the "dark moves first" rule of Checkers. In the future the colors of the pieces, board and background will all be user-configurable. V. "Future" o A flexible serial connection option allowing for NULL modems, regular modems and, to a degree, anything driven by a fully-functional serial.device replacement. o A Unix based socket connection program allowing Internet-play using dnet.device (w/Dnet), uw.device (w/AmigaUW) or the standard serial-device. o Multi-level computer opponent o User-configurable colors of the pieces, board and background. o Better documentation of the game, possibly including standard Checkers rules. o Any reasonable supporter-requested enhancements and, of course, fixes for reported bugs. VI. "ZCheck Instructions" Currently ZCheck is capable of officating a checkers game between two human players. It understands regular movements, jumps and double, triple, etc. jumps. You can save games and load them to resume play at another time. The Red Player moves first and then turns alternate between the two players. A player wins when the other player cannot make a move due to lack of checkers or all of the checkers being trapped. To move a piece, the current player must point to the piece with the mouse pointer. Pressing the left-mouse-button allows the player to "pick up" the piece. The piece can then be dragged to another square and the left-mouse-button may be released to drop the piece.
