THIS IS A COPYRIGHTED F1 LICENCEWARE DISK AND MAY NOT BE COPIED EXCEPT FOR YOUR OWN, PERSONAL USE. How to use C.L.Index C.L.Index is arranged in drawers and files. If you follow the drawers you should find what you need. I suggest that you open the disk icon, then open the first directory and read its contents. Then follow the drawers down. The text files can be read either from this disk or from another Workbench disk. If you are unsure of how to use this text reader, some instructions follow. Use the cursor up and down keys to move up and down the file for now. System Requirements C.L.Index itself runs on any Amiga with Kickstart 2.04 or above. The information contained within refers to AmigaDOS 2.04 but is compatible with version 3 of the operating system If you have an O/S 3 machine, please remember that your machine has more CLI commands than previous releases. The disk itself will run on a single drive machine but if you intend to use AmigaDOS seriously an extra drive, floppy or hard, is almost essential. Using PPMORE PPmore is the most common PD text reader. You will find it in use in all sorts of places - even Magazine coverdisks! Some, however use the terrible text reader, MMPP so it is documented later on. At the top left is a close gadget. You click there to quit. Alternatively, you can click the QUIT gadget at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Click on the gadgets PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN to scan the text. LINE UP and LINE DOWN do the same job but line by line. Press HELP for a command summary. HELP, QUIT or the close gadget return to this text. I suggest you use HELP now so you can discover all of its features. At the top right of the screen you will see a number with a % sign next to it. This indicates how far through the document you are. Most files are one page long. if they are more than one page long this number will read 75% or similar. Most of the command help texts are just one page long. If you do not like the font used, hold down the right mouse button and select the menu item "Settings/Change Font...". Two other fonts are shown. Topaz 8 is the only suitable font as Topaz 9 is too big. If you want to use C.L.Index with this font at all times, select "Settings/Save Settings" from the menu. Note that this only changes the text font, not the font used on the main Workbench screen. CLI Commands A CLI window has been provided at the bottom of the screen for you to try out the commands. If you find it too small, move it upwards by dragging its title bar then resize it with the sizing gadget. if you are unsure as to what these gadgets are, I suggest you read the first chapter of the "Using the Amiga Workbench" manual. If you close the CLI window, either by typing EndShell, EndCLI, x (a special alias provided in this window), clicking on the close gadget or pressing Ctrl-\, either double click on the CLI icon on the side of the Workbench screen or select "Execute Command" from the first Workbench menu then enter NewCLI or NewShell. It must be said now, BE CAREFUL WITH THE CLI COMMANDS! Always keep the C.L.Index disk write- protected and always work with a backup copy. To make a backup copy now, follow these instructions. You can just type everything into the CLI window that has been conveniently provided :-). First, find a blank disk. Not the DPAINT Art Disk, not the Amiga Format May Coverdisk, ESPECIALLY not your Workbench disk but a BLANK disk. The reason for this is that as media gets old it loses its quality - like an old video tape. To make sure you don't get any errors you need brand new disks whenever possible. The Amiga Format Coverdisk has been stuck to the front of a magazine, manhandled by everybody in the newsagent's and left in a disk box. Is that going to be as good quality as when you bought it? And as for Workbench and Dpaint, I think you might just want to keep them! Anyway, as soon as you are finished, type this in the CLI window. You will have to click on it first to activate it. (If you have two drives skip this bit). MAKE SURE THAT THE C.L.Index DISK IS WRITE PROTECTED AT ALL TIMES!!!!!!!!!!! You say : Diskcopy Df0: TO Df0: The Amiga says : Place SOURCE disk ( FROM disk ) in drive Df0: Press to continue So you MAKE SURE THE C.L.Index DISK IS WRITE-PROTECTED then press the Return (or Enter) key after putting it in the drive. And the Amiga grinds away for a bit then asks you to : Place DESTINATION disk ( TO disk ) in drive Df0: Press to continue Now you put your blank disk in the drive and press Return again. This will happen a few times then, in the end your Amiga will dutifully report : Diskcopy finished. * OK? Now you have a backup of your C.L.Index disk to use INSTEAD of the * master copy. Reboot now and read the rest of this file from your backup * disk. I SAID REBOOT NOW AND READ THE REST WITH YOUR BACKUP DISK!!!!!! Hello again if you have just rebooted. If you have two disk drives, make sure the C.L.Index is write-protected then put a blank disk in the external drive and C.L.Index in the internal drive. Click on the CLI window at the bottom of the screen and type the following. Diskcopy Df0: To Df1: EXACTLY as it is written. A backup will be made of the C.L.Index disk. It is important to make a backup copy of this disk because if you accidentally Delete an important file or Format the disk, you won't be able to use it any more! And we wouldn't want that, would we? (DON'T SAY WE WOULD!! ;^} Now please read the text with *'s next to it, just above here. Always use the backup copy of this disk. You should only use the original to make another backup. Don't worry about it using up a disk - what would you rather have... a disk or C.L.Index? (OK, maybe I should rephrase that!) Print All In every drawer on the disk you will see an icon entitled Print_All. This is a program to print out every file in that directory. It saves you from having to load up each file in turn and print it out manually. You just double click on the Print_All icon to start it off. Make sure that your printer is connected, turned on and a piece of paper is inside it. Also make sure that the correct Printer Preferences are set up first (from the About and Usage window). Once the printer has finished printing, press the RETURN key (a prompt will come up) to print the next file. Thanks to John for suggesting this idea. Help! If you have problems, CLIndex's help file may help you. Simply ensure that the Shell window is selected (click once inside it with the left mouse button) then press the key marked HELP (it is above the cursor keys). A small help file will be shown. It will not help with all problems but it aids with some of the simple, common difficulties. Click on its close gadget to exit the help window. I hope you enjoy using C.L.Index!
