                         Morgul's Font Editor 2.1

                            Alexios Chouchoulas
                        (alexios@vennea.demon.co.uk)

What's new in this version:

* Compiled with the new, 16-bit C code generator. Half the size, double
  the speed. :-)

* Changed the active panel colour from cyan to magenta. I couldn't tell
how horrid white-on-cyan looked on my mono monitor in Greece.

* Uses SAVEO instead of SAVE.

* Fixed a couple of minor bugs.

* Made a master disk.

What's still to do:

* Proper Euphoric error recovery.

Here's the rest of the README file, including info on how to use the
program, etc.

Right, I'll make it short and sweet. :-)

I made this sucker so it'll help me make character sets and graphics for a
couple of games I'm planning on writing. I used to have an older version of
it (1.0, obviously), written in BASIC, but I couldn't salvage it from my old
(low quality) tapes. So I wrote a new one in Assembly and C, and here it
is!

In the ZIP file you'll find three files:

		README (You are already!)
FONTEDIT (CSAVEd file, AUTO, entry point is #600)
FONTEDIT.DSK	(SEDORIC disk image with the program in it)

Just start EUPHORIC and load the Font Editor. I recommend the SEDORIC
version (Font Editor does not save on 'tape').

Just a few words on how to use it: it should really be easy. You get three
panels on the screen. One is the grid panel, where the current character
appears magnified and can be edited. The other two panels (character set
panels) contain the standard (ASCII) and alternate (Minitel graphics)
character sets.

One panel is active at any one time.

1. Grid Panel

Use the arrow keys to move the cursor around.

Use the space bar to toggle the current pixel. The character gets updated
immediately.

Use the Escape key to go to the character set panel to which the current
character belongs.

2. Character Set Panels

Use the arrow keys to move around. The current character changes as you
move, and appears in the grid panel.

Use the space bar or Return to go back to the grid panel and edit the
character.

The Escape key moves you to the other character set panel (standard <->
alternate).

3. Global commands

These are outlined under the three panels. Press '?' (you don't have to
keep the Shift key down) for a page of brief help. Global commands work no
matter which panel you're in. Here's a list:

I: Inverts the current character.

C: Clears the grid of the current character.

R: Reverts to the copy of the character in ROM. Useful if you can't see
anything because you've cleared every character. :-)

X: Flips the character around the X axis (i.e. top to bottom)

Y: Flips the character around the Y axis (i.e. left to right)

H: Rolls the character one pixel to the left. Pixels disappearing off the
left edge wrap around to the right.

Y: Likewise, rolls the character upwards.

<: (Shift not required) Select previous character. This is used so you
don't have to move to the character set panel to change the current
character (of course, in the character set panels you get random access
   to the ASCII set).

>: (Shift not required) Select next character.

U: Copy the current shape of the character to the paste buffer. From there
you may paste it onto any other character you like.

P: Copies the contents of the paste buffer to the current character. For
example, to copy A to B: select A, press 'U', select B, and press 'P'.

W: Swaps the contents of the paste buffer and the current character.

S: Saves the standard, alternate or both sets to disk, or 'prints' them (the
latter is used so you can scavenge the fonts and use them in your
   Assembly sources on the PC).

L: Load a character set off the disk.

A: Information about the program.

The program has been extensively tested, but there may still be bugs in it
(there's always one more bug). Specifically, I'm slightly suspicious of the
SAVE/LOAD code which interfaces with SEDORIC -- I don't have the manual yet,
so I had to use a bit of black magic. :-)

Ok, this is it. Good luck. :-)

By the way, I made this thingy using the DOS version of Euphoric 0.6c, and
the cc65 package. Many thanks to Fabrice Frances (frances@ensica.fr) for
writing the emulator and bringing it all back!

The program is freeware; use it or patch it as you like, just leave my name
somewhere in the credits.
