It is unfortunate that MicroSoft is not planning to release it's awesome Windows '95 on the Amiga range of computers. Despite the Amiga's inferiority, Amiga users deserve at least SOME of the power of Windows '95.
That is why we have decided to attempt to bring many of the features in Windows '95 to the Amiga as possible. Thus, we bring you ATWRP (pr: At-warp) - the AmigaDOS To Windows Replacement Project. We do not claim to have written a replacement for Windows '95, as our ability is vastly inferior to that of the coders at Microsoft. Matters are further complicated by the Amiga's hardware (especially the custom chips) and it's operating system.
However, despite these factors working against us, we have managed to bring to the Amiga some of the power of Windows '95.
We have done this by isolating various features of Windows '95 that the Amiga lacks, and written patches that allow you to experience these features on YOUR Amiga!
To use any of the patches, simply run it from a shell. Please note that due to a problem m in the Amiga's operating system (known as "multi-tasking") it is possible to use the RUN command (ie RUN PTRFLICK.EXE) to have the shell prompt return to you, forcing you to deal with another command prompt. Multi-tasking has been one of the major problems in AmigaDOS for the last 10 years.
PTRFLICK.EXE by Krion / Cydonia
One of the most annoying aspects of using the Amiga Workbench is the mouse pointer. Because it is created using the Amiga's sprite hardware, no matter what happens, the pointer is always drawn correctly - even when its being moved with the mouse!
This patch corrects this problem, giving you the flickering effect when you move the mouse around, that Windows '95 users take for granted!
SCRNSAVE.EXE by Krion / Cydonia
All the Amiga screen savers we have encountered so far have MANY flaws. Firstly, they are very hard on the eye due to their extremely high frame rates. Secondly, not only do they allow tasks to run in the background, but they give up the CPU if a background task needs it. This is due to a very complex bug in the Amiga's operating system, involving task priorities and multi-tasking.
However, we have found a way to get around these problems, and are proud to bring you a screen saver so good, that it even has a feature not available on the Windows '95 version!
Here is a list of features offered by SCRNSAVE.EXE:
MEMMNGR.EXE by Accolyte / Cydonia
Finally the 640K limit comes to your Amiga! I can't count the times I've stared enviously, as my PC owning friends have hours of fun squeezing out that last kilobyte. Now you can show them THEM a thing or two!
BONUS FEATURE: Swap-file emulation!! Nobody uses real RAM anymore; the way of the future is "Virtual Memory" - your HD will almost have a life of it's own, reading and writing AUTOMATICALLY whenever it wants to!
SBPEMLT.EXE by Accolyte / Cydonia
What's the worst thing about the Amiga's sound hardware? That's right, it often forgets to mix the sound channels properly! This may have been okay five years ago, but independant channels are so old-tech! Of course we can't perform miracles - getting the real effect would need up to date hardware - but we can go some of the way to give you a near perfect simulation. This version of SBPEMLT.EXE brings you amazing digital effects such as "Spike", "Crackle", and the all new "Background-Noise" previously only available with the highest quality multimedia speakers!
83CRFLNM.EXE by Accolyte / Cydonia
Don't you get sick of typing those long filenames all the time? I know I
do! But with 83CRFLNM.EXE you can keep them short and simple.
It has many advantages over the old method:
INTELCPU.EXE by Krion / Cydonia
You pay good money for your CPU, but AmigaDOS lets you down by leaving it idle too often. INTELCPU.EXE will make your processor act just like an Intel one, executing instructions to keep your CPU working hard!
