Computers in the Panic Society. Technology of the evil 20th century resulted in the first computer. Such machines were huge, slow, and power hungry. With the stupid race for landing evil testrosone infested men on the moon, the computer industry got huge sums of money for research. Computers soon got smaller, faster, and lower in cost. Then, It was possible to produce computer chips. Also, such chips could be produced by automated equipment. An early computer mainframe game was developed and was given the name of "Pong." It was a moving blob of white that was bounced across the screen when it hit another moving blob of white that was called a "paddle". this paddle was controlled by an input device known as a "Joystick" or "Paddle." With the invention of the microprocessor chip, it was soon possible to build a computer the size of a book. With the ROM chip, it was possible to have a program built into the computer. This early game computer was called "Pong." It came with a set of paddle controls. It was slow and expensive, around $200. It was also an instant success. It was very addictive. Kids and adults played it for hours. A great deal of time got wasted in playing this game. It also ruined many TV sets when the background image was "Burned into" the picture tube. Soon, it ended up in the closet as it became boring after a few weeks of continuous playing. The Z-80 chip was soon invented. A company called Fairchild soon designed a new type of game computer. It used a cartridge system of programming. This allowed the computer to be programmed with different games by just changing the cartridge. The machine also used color display and a 8 position control handle on a remote cord. While more expensive then pong, Fairchild was far more useful. 1976 saw the introduction of the Atari 2600 game computer. This machine was also cartridge programmed. It was quite expensive, about $260. Game cartridges were also expensive. With copyright laws and a big demand, it was a toy for those that had the money. Soon, the computer Arcade game machine was invented. It was too expensive for a home owner, but, the games had very real graphics and sound. They soon replaced the pinball machine at the bars and arcades. Packman became the rage of the arcade game. It was soon programmed for home computers. However, Atari became very upset when it was available for computers other then its own. They launched a huge copyright lawsuit against all the other software companies. Other game computers were soon available. The Bally Arcade was a game computer way ahead of its time. It played games with the same quality as was found in the Arcades. It was an instant success. It also came with a programming cartridge that allowed people to program their own games and save them to a tape. An additional promise of a computer keyboard and the unheard of 64k of memory at an affordable price sounded too good to be true. It was never built. The home computer soon became a reality. The Commodore 64 was the first good affordable home computer that could play games and be programmed. Games could be loaded by cartridges, tape, or, if you could afford one, a disk drive. The Apple Computer also came on the market. With its powerful 6502chip, it could do simulation games as well as business records. However, it was a very expensive home computer. During the 80s, there was a huge surge in game computers, Atari begin to sue everyone in sight over copyright laws. They lost several key cases and won others. The results was a flood of much cheaper game cartridges. $5 vs $40 and many companies going bankrupt. Many of the cartridges were of very poor quality. Sales of game computers and software fell flat. Automation soon flooded the markets with Atari 2600. They can now be bought in 1990 for $49. The Amiga was presented in the fall of 1985. It was hailed as a powerful home computer that could play very high quality arcade games. However, there were only three programs available when it was introduced in 1985. The company was bought out by Commodore. However, Commodore did a poor job of selling the machine. It wasn't until the winter of 1989 that a new version called the Amiga 500 really took off with some promotion by Commodore. However, this was still too pricey for the mass market. In 1993, the CD32 was developed. It became a great sucuess until, the CEO ran the company into bankruptcy and tied up sales of the patents for years. Nintendo came out in 1988. This machine was introduced for $199. It came out with very good games in cartridge form. It was also highly marketed with a carefully produced number of game cartridges. The result was a huge demand for this machine and shortages of games that kept the prices of game cartridges high. In 1989 with the new "GameBoy," the hand held cartridge game computer was the next rage. It is also an instant hit with millions being sold. The Nintendo system came down in price to $99. However, with careful marketing and a large fleet of copyright lawyers, this company has been able to keep the prices of game cartridges very high. (And their profits.) This has created all kinds of problems. 1. Kids were wasting all kinds of times playing the games. With the portable GameBoy, they were playing them at all times of the day. Even in school. School work suffered as the kids wasted all day playing Nintendo. 2. With the high cartridge price and spot shortage of popular games and, also cartridge incompatibility, there were many family fight over who would play with the machine. 3. Thief and shoplifting of machines and cartridges were common as a lot of kids were out there that didn't have the money for the $40 or more game cartridges. 4. Doctors begin reporting that they were getting a lot of kids suffering from neck injuries that soon got the name of "Nintendo Neck." 5. The games themselves could promote violence as many of the game themes were about violence. 6. Kids were being exposed to excessive EMR radiation emitting from the TV sets that they were glued to for many hours on end. 7. Gameboy gobbled batteries like crazy. Batteries were being shoplifted. They were also being stolen out of flashlights, portable cassette players, and even cameras. 8. Kids were suffering all kinds of injuries as they tried to imitate the Janitor that was trying to rescue the frog princess. 9. Many of the games were not what the slick advertising promised. Nintendo is being sued by a boy who was disappointed that a baseball game didn't allow him to do what the advertising said it would do and the store refuse to give him a refund. 10. Kids started suffering from Grand Mal Seizure after being exposed to all the flashing lights and sounds. 11. The monitors are usually TV picture tubes. They operate under high voltage and contain a vacuum that places thousands of pounds of pressure on that fragile glass tube. If damaged, they can implode and send glass fragments flying in all directions. 12. The monitors can emit dangerous EMR radiation. Kids often sit very close to the TV as they play the games. They are encouraged to sit too close to those sets because the control cords are very short. 13. Since kids are often eating and drinking as they play the games, food and liquids can get into the TV and games. This can cause dangerous fires to break out. Kids can even suffer dangerous shocks from the spilled liquids. 14. Kids that didn't have a computer game at home often spent tons of quarters at the local arcade playing the games. Here they are exposed to all kinds of undesirable people who could rob them, molest them, or sell drugs to them. Panic People soon begin to scream long and loud about this new danger to the kids. Something had to be done about it. On December 22, 1989, warnings were printed in all local newspapers warning parents about the dangers of "too much Nintendo." As usual, it was ignored. Or, people threw out the paper without ever reading this well hidden article. In 1992, the parents of Laura Moceri sued Nintendo. They contend that playing those games have caused their daughter to suffer from "Video Game Induced Epilepsy." Some 1 million people in the U.S. are photosensitive epileptics. They can suffer seizures if exposed to flashing lights, sounds, etc., such as found on video games. A computer game called "slavery" was declared unfit as a video game. Because the object of the game was to escape from slavery and the fact that if you were caught that you would be whipped, the game was declared "racist" by Your Glorious Leaders. The company that produced the game was forced to recall all units sold. Another game called "Mortal Combat" gained the attention of Your Glorious Leaders. This game was packed full of blood and violence. In the IBM world, "Doom" was all the rage. This bloody, gory, 3-D adventure features custom items such as chain saws, shotguns, and other custom weapons of extreme blood and gore. Your Glorious Leaders were shocked by the gore and violence of this one. Tech was the final straw that got the attention of the public of the evils of computer games. This "virtual Reality" system resulted in people being totally addicted to computer games. It also resulted in people acting out the games for real. Your Glorious Leaders got Tech banned for good. In the Panic Society, there will be no video games of any kind allowed. Such games are considered "too dangerous" to the mind. They are also "Just a huge waste of time" which can be better spent on more productive things on the computer. In fact, the computer monitor will just be a color LCD screen of pale blues, greens, browns and light gray. Just what you are reading this text with. Such a screen is free from glare and brightly flashing light. Since easy to read text and simple graphics are the only thing that will ever be displayed on those monitors, there will never be any danger from flashing lights, eye strain, glare, or wild graphics that could cause a seizure of any kind. LCD monitors use natural light for their display. The display screen is a flat sheet of clear plastic. It does not contain a dangerous vacuum. They operate on very low power DC current. Therefore, it is impossible to get a shock from one, be exposed to EMR radiation, or be injured from an exploding picture tube Computer users will never be allowed to write programs. That way, there is never any danger of a video game ever being programmed. Your recycled IBM Model T terminal is connected to the central processor of Panic Society master control unit. This mainframe uses RISC parallel processing, and has access to Crystal-ROM databanks. Your terminals use common 8088 CMOS low power CPU controllers on a color LCD super safety display. It is connected to the mainframe by a lightwave cable operating at 9600 baud. It is safe to use and cannot be damaged. Is this all possible. In countries like North Korea, there are no video games or computers allowed for the people to use. The government fears what will happen if their citizens are allowed to have such things. They are able to maintain total control over the people this way. There has been be no further advancement in computer technology since Panic Society dragged everyone down to the level of the lowest achiever. Besides, the manufacturing of computer chips involve the burning of coal, the use of ozone destroying chlorine, and large amounts of dangerous high voltage electricity. AH
