just incase the link is down, a small snippet:-

But you are defining Amiga in a different manner to them, so of
course they will be different. The glory of such a generic vision as
"a better way" is that it can mean anything you want it to - welcome
to corporate marketing and PR ;-)

I have said from the start that AmigaObjects won't be a revolution.
Several companies are working on similar concepts, HAVi, Jini, Rebol,
NextObjects, Inferno, Elate, to name just a few. No one has a full
architecture working properly at the moment but that is not through
want of trying.

* As for networking and communicating computers and appliances (simply
different contexts) over the network, there is IMHO a much better
solution already available and is by many considered truly innovative,
if not revolutionary. I'm speaking about REBOL...

 Couldn't agree more.

* Just a few days after the early September earthquakes in Amiga, Inc.
a group of Amigans, you including, came with a plan, how to finally
put the destiny of Amiga in the hands of the community. Could you
please describe how and when did this plan come to life, who was the
initiator, who participates in this and what are the relationships
between the participating subjects? Many Amigans see this blurly, as
"just another effort" or as an immediate reaction to Amiga, Inc.
happenings, maybe stimulated by the sacking of your friend and the
last Amiga enthusiast there, Bill McEwen.

Okay - things are mixed up here. The group of which you speak is
called Phoenix, and is a developers and notables organisation. Amino
is a member of it, but we are not a driving force within it. Others
are organising and pushing it forwards.

* A part of the plan is your and Bill's new company called Amino. How
is Amino organized, is it already an officially registred company?
Long-time Amiga evangelist, Giorgio Gomelsky, who participated in all
the initiatives promoting the idea of independence from mother
companies (the first one was IAS, in 1994) supports and puts forth
non-traditional models of managing a company. Is Amino going this
inclusive model of business which supports active participation of the
community?

Amino is a company formed by Bill and I to take all the plans that we
formulated whilst at Amiga Inc, but which were never used by them, and
provide for a complete digital convergence solution. Part of that is
the development of a leading edge platform that we hope will inherit
and carry forwards the ideals of the classic Amiga computer and
community.

We recognise that a community is a huge asset to any platform, and
that the company/customer model is unable to take advantage of that
asset. However, developing a platform and a product line is a costly
proposition, and raising the sort of capital required to do it
successfully is better suited to a traditional model. For Amino, we
want the best of both worlds. To do this, we intend to offer as much
of the company as possible to the community. By having a stake in the
company, and hopefully a controlling stake, then we will see the
synergy of a community based structure maximised whilst protecting the
platform from the usual business dangers of takeover, bankruptcy and
market before morals.

* Amino needs capital, as each and every startup. Are you going the
path of venture capital to raise the funds and do you have some
investors already? Isn't it rather risky plan?

Yes we do, and no it isn't. Risk is inherent in everything.

* Recently, IBM started to provide complete CHRP designs freely and
Motorola presented the PowerPC roadmap covering G4, G5, G6 and G7
processors... How does the business plan of Amino relate to the
longer-term plan of Phoenix to set up a new platform, and what is the
position of Amino in this?

A HW reference group has been formed within Phoenix and we are
participating in it. Part of our distributed strategy is that we will
concentrate only on the SW, and let the HW partners concentrate on the
HW so that we can all work towards our own goals whilst benefiting
from a common approach.

Nope, I shouldn't think so - I'm using MiamiSSL. Besides, somebody said
that that Voyager complains about unsupported encryption of something,
whereas IB is ok with that particular area.

The problem is that after I login, when I click links to get more info
on my account, it just goes to the front page instead (the sign-up
process went without a hitch). I have a feeling it is a cookie problem
or some other simple bug in IB. BTW, I'm an IB beta tester, so all I
was really looking for here was whether the site worked in other Amiga
browsers :)

They changed it quite recently though, I think - the site used to be
heavily dependent on javascript (and java?) and IE or NSN. Now the site
is much more steamlined and not so browser dependent - enough for all
Amiga browsers to work with it, in theory ;) I could never get past
the sign-up procedure before, but since the new site appeared, IB gets
through it without a hitch. Looks like AWeb is the only Amiga browser
that can handle the site at the moment :(

Is there a problem with the above disc? Why I ask is because when I
try to get to a game on that disc it refuses to load. The game in
question is "connect4" on cover disc132b.Under the "MrE" heading.
what happens is, when ever I click on it, the whole screen jumps, and
the mouse pointer jumps to the top of the screen, and that's it no
program. There seems to be no way to get to it.All the other games play.
Any pointers?

Try a PC computer fair where you can pick up at least a 15 incher for about
60 notes. My NEC Multisync XV15+ was about that and it is a bloody good
monitor too.

Come to think of it the 17 inchers are coming down a lot.

Oh and one other thing they are "reconditioned" which usually means second

Use a copy of PC-Task to (slowly) unarchive it, or get
your PC-Chum to install it on his machine, then use
Twin and a serial cable to copy the "ID" (I think)

The following worked for my version of Quake (cd volume name Quake101:),
it might not work for other versions.
First cut the first 1945 bytes from the Q101_int.1 file, you can do
this
using a simple text editor which supports binary files (i.e. CED).
Load the file into the editor and search for -lh next up remove all
the
characters up until the 2 characters before -lh, so you'll end up with
a
file starting with 2 characters followed by -lh. Now save this file to
HD
as q1.lha. Next up join the new q1 file and the q101_int.2 to quake.lha
using the standard join command i.e.:
join q1 quake101:q101_int.2 to quake.lha
(don't forget to enter the path where you've put the q1 file and where
you
want to put the quake.lha file).
Now you can use lha to unarchive the quake.lha file.

Well, I peeked inside the files with an editor and they actually appear
to be LHA packed (this is Quake version 1.01 so perhaps it was changed
later?). The LHA command gives me the filelisting, while UNZIP does not
recognise it.

However, this appears to be a two-part LHA package (named Q101_int.1 and
Q101_int.2). Having never dealt with those before I dont know how to
uncompress it! It beats me why it even had to be compressed in the
first place - it would have fit the CD easily anyway.

Yeah, it does seem a bit silly. A bit like bedsocks really - justifiable
yet silly. You might like to just try joining the lumps together then

It's not just the Amiga, it happens with downloading from the net on any
computer that I've used. (PC and QNX)

I'm not sure exactly why, though- it must be something to do with TCP/IP
negotiations and all that jazz, in addition to network bandwidth et all.

That's what I did with the PC demo when the first illegal port of Q came

PS If you've only got 68k, buy the official Quake from CB - you're much
better that way, cos it is much faster =2E=2E=2E=2E

PPS If you've got a PPC then the unofficial illegal port seems 10fps
faster than this first showing on aminet ;-)

Since when has buying a PC meant using Microsoft products? In terms of the
price/performance ratio, PCs are very good value - it's just a pity that
there are so many legacy flaws in the hardware. For heaven's sake, even
the Mac has Open Firmware now. Argh.

Thanks for the advice with the Quake archives! The archive needed no hex
editing, joining of the two archives was the only necessary step. LhA
automatically discarded the "erroneous data" in the beginning of the
archive and unpacked the PAKs successfully.

The Quaker port runs quite well on my 603e 200MHz. In AGA LoRes I get
around 15-20fps up on the on-screen counter (and around 30 in confined
spaces). I think this would really fly on a graphics card! Since the
f2p used is optimised code, I expect no great speed improvements in
later ports... Anyone in Finland wanting to part with their BVision? :)

Well OK then, maybe, just. ;-)

I hope that`s possible, but until then we`re back to all that uncertainty. At least with the final Gateway position we knew where
Amiga was heading (PPC) if you ignored all the NG hype. Now we have the potential for QNX and other ideas to re-appear, not a bad
thing in itself, but another delay until everythings worked through.

What is going to happen to OS3.6 now? I suppose we have to hope that Amino`s announcements make a few things clear.

Hi

It`s great news that AF will shortly be running a 3D tutorial, it`s been a long time coming, but is anyone else concerned that it
will be for C4D?

I know many of us own either v2 from AF or v4 from CU, but IMO AF should run the series on a 3D program that is still being worked
on, Imagine for example. Many of us will have copies of that too.

Whilst on the subject of Imagine, I reckon it`s about time we had a Work In Progress on it`s current state, a lot of work must have
gone into it since the last review - any chance Ben?

I`ve not got around to doing a site as yet (I`m a boring sod, nothing to put on one) so I`ve got a full 20 Meg to play with. A lot
of the stuff on AWD could be shifted to remote sites IMO, for example the company index, still pretty useful for web addresses, but
wouldn`t require much attention.

Hi everyone,

Wow, what is happening? Amiga bought! (Yipppee!)
now maybe we will get somewhere.
Aminet shut forever! Thats just takes the p*ss.

Did anyone out there know about this before it happened?
What about all that software? What will we do now?
Just a few questions that probably most of us are asking.

Does anyone have any plans to set up a new site? In todays
standards you could probably hold the whole site on
one very large hard drive! I am sure there must be an ISP
out there who would help support this.

Well, any suggestions? It would be a project that we would
all like to get involved in.

Nick.

I don't think we'll see QNX being used, see:

HAPPY NEW YEAR Guys,

If you would like to have your website included (or updated) on Amiga
Format magazine's CD #50, (issue 134, March 2000), could you please
upload your archived website site to:

             ftp2.futurenet.co.uk/pub/incoming

The ABSOLUTE deadline is *Friday 7th January* but, we would appreciate
it if you could upload your site sooner. Any websites arriving after the
deadline will not be updated. Please prefix your archive with "AF_"
for example: AF_MyWWWSite.lha.

**************************************************************************

                            Important Notes:

1. We have now re-designed the layout of the "Essential Websites" page on
the Amiga Format CD and it now includes a hyperlink to your wesite on
the net allowing Amiga users who have access to the internet to visit
your wesite directly. We now also require the complete URL to your
website and this should be contained in a text file called "URL.txt"
   within your archive.

2. Due to space restrictions, websites are now updated on *every CD* basis
so, if you don't update your website you'll probably find your website
won't be included on the Amiga Format CD!

3. We make every possible effort to include your website on the Amiga
Format CD-ROM. However, due to space restrictions, we are sometimes
forced to make space for alternative data. For this reason we are
unable to offer any firm guarantees that your website will be included.

4. Some of you have been sending your updated websites to the Future server
several times over the course of a particular month. In the future could
you please refrain from doing this. One update per month is fine! ;-)

5. If you have any problems uploading your files to the Future server,
please email: ftp@futurenet.co.uk to let them know!

**************************************************************************

If your company has any demo programs (utilities or games) that you would
also like to have included on the CD, please email me as soon as possible
with details and approximate byte sizes.

Not always the solution. On my set-up the HDToolbox of 3.5 f**ked up big =

No it isn't......I've got a 13Gb HD but OS3.5 with Boing Bag enhancement, it
only recognises 9.5Gb.

OS3.5 does _NOT_ fully support hard drives bigger than 4Gb.

Subject: [afb] 3D Game Creator
Date: Wed, 5 Jan 2000 08:00:42 -0800 (PST)
Hi everyone. Bit of news from my website:

Before Vulcan Software decided to abandon their Amiga
operation, they were going to release a Doom-clone
creator by the author of F1 Sotware's most successful
title, GRAC. By virtue of the fact that I'm friends
with his brother, I've convinced Edmund Clay to
release it via the internet, and should be available
for download from this website soon!

The "3D Game Creator", or "Doom But In Blitz" as it
was known during testing, allows you to do pretty much
anything you can in Doom, including (as far as I can
remember):

- Lighting effects
- Look up/down
- Jump
- Multiple level walkways
- Bouncing grenade effects
- Stairwells
- Intelligent enemies that do not hide behind doors
waiting for you to open them, who then try to get on a
line with you and shoot you from a distance (Amiga
Power would be proud)

And loads more.

The lighting effects are more advanced than AB3DII's;
the preview game had a torch, like Half-Life's (though
it was written several years before that game was
released), and the light-bulbs that lit up the
majority of the corridors could be shot out. This
affected the enemies' ability to see you, reducing the
accuracy of their shots, and enabling you to sneak
past unobserved.

I'm pretty sure it's going to be shareware.

Anyway, that's enough plugging for now.

Ha! Not just an OS3.5 Wishlist now.

Hopefully we can do some big big things
with AmigaOS if only just to make it that
much more friendly, even if it only gets
retired to an emulation in the end.

I'm gonna do some little articles on
different parts of the OS and tools that
have been suggested, that I have thought
of, that have been in old "Amiga 2000"
articles, etc.

Basically anything goes now. If it's been
implemented on AmigaOS, it can potentially
go *into* AmigaOS, within reason.

So MagicMenu would be a candidate for
integration. But VMM would not be, because
it breaks too much, is breaking the system,
and is technically a *REAL* hack..

Maybe that's a bad example. But anyway. Go
suggest (ON THE WEBSITE, NOT HERE) and I'll
see if it warrants a case study type look,
or just a breif mention.

I might see what Olaf Barthel thinks of it all
as well..

QUESTION FOR OTHER PEOPLE:

Has anyone got a picture of a roladex,
you know those things with the bits of

Failing that, has anyone got any icons

I know what you mean but I still disagree with the general sentiments
towards AMOS.

My actual job is a games programmer so I obviously have to program in
C/C++/ASM
using Direct-X/OpenGL etc. I guess these are what you would call 'real'
languages.

However they are no more real than AMOS. Games programming is more about the
techniques you
use rather than the language you do it in.

The techniques you learn using AMOS are the same as using C++ but with AMOS
you can afford
the time to experiment a lot more.

And of course, not everyone has the time/money/skill/desire to learn C++.
I'd also like to point out that in my opinion it is much harder to get into
coding C++ on the AMIGA than on Windows, because of a lack of
books/resources/help.

My cannon-fodder game, Turtleminator is actually a few years old but it
didn't take that long to code
in AMOS. If I'd done it in C++ it would have taken much much longer, been
much much more unstable and wouldn't have been much better.
A little bit faster but it gets almost 25fps already so I wouldn't need
that.
Better graphics? No. The graphics are only as good as my graphics artist
(which I think were pretty good anyway).

All in all, there was not one good reason for me to good that particular
game in C rather than AMOS.

The problem is that AMOS is too good at what it does. Any fool can come
along and make a reasonable attempt at a game. People see these and
automatically blame the language.
If C++ was as easy to code in as AMOS you'd get an equally number of bad
games coming from that language.

You have migrated from AMOS to E/C/ASM but at one point you were an AMOS
programmer. Everyone has to start somewhere before migrating don't they? And
there is no other good alternative to AMOS at the moment. I don't want to
start an arguement about Blitz but I think its very buggy and not very
friendly. Even on the PC they have nothing which comes close to being as
easy to learn whilst being fairly powerful and being good at teaching the
techniques. Dark Basic looks like it might make it but not for a while yet.

My 3.6gig file became invalid the other day (ran out of ram which cause
ibrowse to choke halfway through a d/l) for the first time in ages.

I simply booted with no startup sequence. The drive lit up for about
30 seconds while it validated, and bobs your cross dressing uncle,
all is well.

You cam't register any more unless you:

a) learn C
b) learn how to code C for the Game Boy
c) get a compiler for the Game Boy
d) send a work-in-progress and source code to Ville
Helin.

Personally, I'd prefer to part with 10.

That was version 1.00.00e. Within a week, version
1.00.01e was released, with that limitation removed.

Emuls to avoid are VGB and Gamebuk; they're slow and
have a poor incompatibility rate. AmiGameBoy is the
best, in my opinion. However, AmiDog has recently
released "GBE", a colour GB emulator for PPC Amigas,
though this won't be any use to whoever originally
posted the message.

document.referrer holds the URL of the page that the user clicked a link to
get where they are. Note, though, that it only has the URL if they
*clicked* a link - if it was a direct request (typing the URL in the address

Excellent news!! I was waiting with baited breath for this software, being a

I've tried copying over the original file, deleting the file then
dearchiving, and dearchiving to a whole new partition - results remain
the same.

Could it be OS specific then? I'm using 3.1.

That works for me, too. (Not cross dressing, b4 anyone asks)
Actually, I think OS3.5 has some kind of WAITVALIDATE function, or I have a
nice hack that does it without me knowing, because when invalidation
occurs, WB loading stops until it can boot without killing the HD. This
normally works out faster.

Hi Everyone,

I have been trying to make a zip bootable so as to run on my A1200 via the IOMEGA 100
unit.

I have managed, via SquirrelHDToolbox, to set up the parameters (one of which is IDH0) and have then high level formatted
 it as ZIP-Workbench.

I mounted it with SCSIMounter and saved the resulting Mountlist as IDH0, which
was then placed into the Devs/Dosdrivers drawer.

I then copied across to the zip the contents of the HD Workbench partition.

How do I get the zip to bootup on a reset?

Thanks in advance

You'll need to upgrade your Kickstart. My advice is just go all-out and get
OS 3.1. About 99.44% of my stuff on my A600 from my 2.05 worked perfectly on
3.1, as did, of course non-AGA OS 3.1-based software.

The zips did not get hot at all. Mind you, the Classic Squirrel interface gets

Perhaps the computer also could have became unstable.

As I said, closing down the computer and turning off the heater rectified the

Ah, the mysteries of the filesystems. :) Im still using FFS, BTW. Is
the validation time dependent on the DRIVE size or PARTITION size? My
WB3.0 is 100megs (to make the second partition 2GB exactly). I guess
some speed-up will be evident once I get around buying & installing
WB3.5.

Has anyone used the HDToolbox program after installing OS3.5?
I would like to change the partition sizes (HD2..HD4) after

As far as I know, you have no choice as to whether you lose the data on the
drives or not. You'll have to back up anything you want, make the changes to
the partitions, format them, and then restore what you backed up.

The edition of Microdot (the mail/newsreader) supplied with NC*2* is not
Y2K compliant, which means that...

a) everyone's postings are dated dd/mm/100, often putting them at the
bottom of people's mail folders
b) Many news servers will not accept postings from MDII, as the year
'100' is too old.

Active/Vapor haven't made any move to produce a version for NC2 users,
although a bugfix was released to NC3 users last week. They are aware of
the problem; a big thread has been going on all week, yet nothing has
been said, and so we are lead to believe that we've paid for software
which isn't fit for it's purpose, something which trading standards
could be brought in about.

Of course, if a bugfix does turn up, TS won't have to become involved.

I think 37.299 is missing IDE support - if you boot off floppy and type

version scsi.device

does anything happen? Your best bet is probably to scavange a 2.05 ROM
from somewhere.

Get yourself either a Whippet or an accelerator and a Surf Squirrel, then
get a high speed modem. Then get Miami, YAM, a web browser, an FTP program,
etc....

I recommend the Whippet, as the SCSI port on the Surf Squirrel doesn't work
on the A600 [with very few exceptions].

I just got a TekMagic 060 accelerator for my A4000, and well...I can't get
it to work.

I have a Revision B motherboard, 18MB RAM, PIV+Concierto, GVP I/O Extender,
DKB Spitfire, an internal SCSI AND IDE hard drive [one each, that is]...

Problem is 1) I didn't get a manual with the TekMagic, and 2) Computer won't
boot when I have the accelerator in. I've noticed a few things:

-- Unless I have a SIMM [it's a 32MB double-sided] plugged into the far left
SIMM slot on the accelerator, my caps lock light stays lit and will NOT
unlight. If the SIMM is either not plugged in at all or in a different
slot, the caps lock light stays on.

-- The caps lock light also stays on if the oscillator is either in the
wrong way or completely out...

-- I doubt this is important, but I didn't attach the SCSI to the TekMagic.

Well....any suggestions? I put the A3640 back in and I'm working fine, but I
really want my 060 to work!

What do you mean by "move", do you mean to a different
key, or physically move? If it's just to a different
key you must have a Keymap for a different country
installed, if it's physically moved the plastic
"plunger" (for want of a better description) must have
snapped, this happened with my "J" key, went really
wobbly, I just opened the keyboard with a little
screwdriver and took a plastic-plunger out of the F9
key (or some other little-used key) and swapped them
around.

If your using an Micronik Zorro board then it will be that which is
causing the problem. Read below and then make a decision to phone
Eyetech.
Has anyone noticed why no-one is selling the infintiv range anymore?
...reason below.
My A1200 was at Blittersoft for 7 months being fixed after being
damaged by DHL and then problems with my 1260 card not working with the
Zorro board completely dead. Plus on top of that they could not get the
parts in time. In the end (over a year later) I had it shipped to
Eyetech whom are kindly fixing my machine. Just waiting for the Tower
to be made which will be released as a unit with the new Zorro IV
board. I have asked Eyetech to take out Micronik Zorro board as it has
caused so much problems, they are replacing this with the Zorro IV
which is 100% Apollo compatible.
Plus they test my machine fully before it arrives back.
I'm not bothered by Zorro IV speed as I already own a A4000, plus
A4000's are cheap secondhand anyway.
Micronik don't sell many products anymore as the infinitiv tower range
is cheap and nasty, even with complete strong packaging shipped first
class with DHL mine got damaged. Anyone considering upgrading their
A1200 then buy the towers from Eyetech (or the power tower from Power
Computing) as they are first class when it comes to customer service.

Hope this advice helps someone!

Subject: [afb] Re: External ZIP drive on Amiga
Date: Thu, 06 Jan 2000 01:32:49 -0800
get the adaptor from Blittersoft if it is a parrell port one.

instructions to setup drive:-

How do I setup my Zip drive on an Amiga?

Iomega does not provide support for the Amiga Operating System or for
the SCSI board and its associated software. If problems are encountered
that are outside the scope of this document, contact your SCSI board
manufacturer. The Zip parallel drive will not work on the Amiga computer

Installation...

Turn the power off to all devices in your system.
Connect the SCSI cable from the external SCSI connector on the rear of
the Zip drive to the external SCSI connector on the SCSI adapter card.
Enable termination on the first and last devices connected to the SCSI
chain and disable termination to any other devices.
Set the SCSI ID. Make sure that all devices connected to the ribbon
cable have different SCSI ID numbers. A switch found on the rear of the
drive sets the SCSI ID.
Set the SCSI card to bootable by jumping the boot jumper on the card.
This must be done even when you do not intend to boot from the drive.
If you are not sure how to set this jumper try the card the way it is
(cards usually ship with bootability enabled), otherwise contact the
card manufacturer. Booting from the Zip drive is not recommended.
The Zip drive should now be installed.
Formatting the Disk...
Formatting destroys any information on the disk. Before performing a
format on a disk make sure you have a backup copy of any information on
the disk you may need.

Turn the power on to the computer and to the Zip drive. If you have an
external Zip drive, turn the drive power on before you power on the
computer.
Insert the Zip disk into the drive.
Locate HDToolBox on your system or refer to your Amiga documentation
for installation. HDToolBox should be in your tools directory under
Workbench: (HD0:).
Select HDToolBox menu, choose Menu and then select Information.
Once inside the Icon Information window, click on New and enter the
SCSI card adapter driver as shown:
For Commodore cards enter SCSI_DEVICE_NAME= scsi.device.
For GVP cards enter SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=gvpscsi.device.
For more than one card from the same manufacturer enter
SCSI_DEVICE_NAME= 2nd.gvpscsi.device.
If you don't know the name of the device driver, contact the
manufacturer of your SCSI card.
Press Return to enter the device driver name into the Tool Types window
and then choose Save.
Run HDToolBox by double clicking on the HDToolBox Icon. The Zip drive
light will now flicker for a minute while HDToolBox scans the disk.
Choose Continue if HDToolBox warns you of changes.
You should now be at the main HDToolBox screen. Select the Zip drive
from the window under Hard Drives in System. The Zip drive can be
recognized by the SCSI ID number found under Address. The first time a
format is performed, status will be Unknown.
Select Change Drive Type, Define new drive type, and then Read
Configuration From Drive.
Iomega Drive and AmigaDOS Operation Notes...
AmigaDOS and Removability:
If removable disks have different volume names, AmigaDOS may not be
able to recognize a new disk. To avoid this problem, give all removable
disks used in a specific drive the same volume name. At the very least,
give all related removable disks used in the save drive the same volume
name. If you must use disks with different volume names, you may need
to reboot your computer after changing disks.

Partitioning and Removable Disks:
Partitioning of any type of removable disk is not recommended. AmigaDOS
defaults to multiple partitions on larger disks. Partitioning of
removable disks can cause problems with changing disks and keeping
partition sizes synchronized from disk to disk.

Disks and Low-Level Formats:
All Zip disks have spare tracks available for use during low-level
formats. If a disk begins generating read/write errors, a low-level
format will replace any bad sectors on the disk with the available
spare sectors. This process assures an error free disk over the life of
the Zip disk. Low-level formats can be performed using the HDToolBox
utility.

You'll need to explain a little more. What do you mean by "four drives when
there is only one plugged in"? Also, to effectively make use of everything
the net has to offer, you'll need at least Workbench 3. However, for email,
telnet and news you could probably get by with 2.05. You will, however,
need a hard drive and at least some extra ram.

Just make sure you have a decent sized hard disk and a
few megs of RAM, A600 upgrades are dirt cheap these
days, getting 2 megs of Chip RAM and 4 megs of FAST
ram should do you fine.

Ah that old chestnut, looks like there's a problem
with the way your floppy drive is hooked up, this
happened on my old A500, turned out two pins on the
internal floppy connector were shorting out, try
getting a new cable.

> > i'm going to use an old 500 meg hard drive from an

No probs, just do a Workbench format on the hard disk
and get the correct serial wire/driver.

If you want to get on the web, do a hunt around for an
old version of AMosaic (V2.1 I think) which works with
Kick 2.0 and Workbench 2.1 and 2.04 I think.

Good luck!

That is a valid point but it still looks dull, and it has bad
connatations on PC users because: they think the design is old
fashioned and simple because Amigas have web browsers which can't
handle anything more complex. It wasn't until they saw Voyager 3 pre 5
(now i use 3.0a) running with jscript, and shockwave flash that they
realised that Amiga browsers were actually pretty good! :)

Hi Peter,

> be honest, quite poo really.

It depends on what you intend to do with them... Sure for whizzy bangy
graphics, they're a bit slow but, if you're talking about adding a few
nice looking features to a TV's on-screen display, then they're perfect
for the job - they can do a quick medium resolution image, with a
moderate amount of colours - more than adequate for this task, in fact
anything more than that probably isn't noticeable on the average TV set
(the screen is too lousy).

But then that's probably not their real interest, the patents will cover
more than just current circuits. The theory of "how" they operate
probably has more tangible uses, and may provide a good starting point
to design research in newer devices.

We might think the patent of something so old and simple (by current
standard) is not worth much, but that's not how it works (imagine being
able to patent fire!). Companies often patent things just to limit the
options to their opposition. There's even a patent on a particular
breed of laboratory mouse.

I finally got around to trying out that QNX demo on a floppy. While it
looked nice, and seemed to work okay, it wasn't any way to judge an OS.

I doubt any of us could really make a judgement on an OS we couldn't
see. QNX was the least likeliest that we could see, and I'm sure most
of us haven't had any way of trying LINUX either.

I'm sure most of us like "the way" the Amiga works, and would like a new
computer that's fairly similar.

I agree. And for what it's worth, I've always used FFS, and don't have
a problem with it. I think that I've only had 3 drive invalidations in
7 years. One from Thor refusing to abort writing to a drive when it was
too full (downloading news). One from Term doing the same thing (the
capture log). And once when an apparently hung program suddenly decided
to write to a drive jsut at the moment I gave up and started to reboot.

Geez, the level of quoting is getting stupid on here, these last few

hideously unreadable badly formatted text.

Edit your messages before replying. And if you can't be bothered

According to the manual:

The series 13 range of autoscanning monitors are suitable for use over a
wide range of horizontal and vertical scan rates; including 15-40kHz,
30-40kHz and 30-50kHz horizontal rate and 45-100Hz vertical rate depending
on the particular model type.

I own a 1438 myself and have succesfully used at 800*600*50Hz ( or was it
60Hz, I do not remember ), with my PC. I you go higher it will freakout.

JavaScript is going to be worse than HTML for compatibility between
different browsers. It's functions are more dependent on which browser
it runs on than anything else you'll try and look at in a web browser.

Hi Patrick,

Yes, but it depends on you having the right interface and OS.

I have used the SCSI Zip on an 1.3 A500 with an A590 SCSI interface, and
it worked, but you have to treat it as fixed media (i.e. you have to have
the disk in when you boot, and you can't remove it).

I've also used it on a 2.0 A500 with an A590 SCSI interface, and that
worked fine, and the the Zip disk was usable as removable media.

That's been a standard sort of fault in TVs that used edge connectors,
for many years. The standard fix is: remove the card, scrub card and
slot with toothbrush and *unpolluted* alcohol (not meths, get ethanol,
or surgical spirit), let it dry, and insert card properly, and fix into
place (in the proper place, even if this means doing some metal work to
ensure that the card is fixed properly into place, not fixed improperly
out of place).

Sometime you have to retension the edge connector so it connects
properly with the board. This is a fiddly task, either using a tool, or
a needle, and you can wreck the connector if not careful, or be stuck
with a connector that it's impossible to get behind the pins to bend
them at all.

Is there any way that I can use a peecee modem on a miggy? It's a PCI 56k

3.1, 500meg HD and a CD-rom drive. It's all in an EZ-Tower, so both power
and space shouldn't be a problem. It's just figuring out how to connect PCI
devices to a miggy... I don't need a Zorro port jobbie, or anything do I? In
which case it's probably cheaper to get a serial/parallel modem instead...
btw - which one's faster?

It's a crappy monitor, I don't reckon you'll even get that much, but you
should be able to work it out for yourself - it's max frequency is 38kHz...

I find that about quite a few Amiga software authors, they're damn
arrogant - it's your system that's at fault; stop running patches; all
patches are hacks; we need to be able to exploit the OSs undocumented
features without someone else fixing them up; it's okay for us to
produce non-standard interfaces; a commonly useful and wanted feature is
completly unimportant to them, despite there being many (external) ARexx
scripts floating around to do this wanted feature, they don't see there
being a need to write it into the program, so they won't implement it....

And the list goes on forever.

> I have NEVER been able to get the SSL encryption to work, after a
> while I just gave up.

Hmm, I have got SSL to work with IBrowse (using Miami's SSL, that is).
But any browser can come unstuck when the site you're connecting to
doesn't use a SSL scheme your system supports, or insists on only
letting Internet Exploiter or Nutscrape use their site.

> I also paid out seven quid for an update book which turned out to be

Try the Scala manual, it's three different versions in one, with the
newer versions added pages at the front. To understand it, you have to
read the old instructions, then read all the newer ones to work out
what's changed. Which is bloody intollerable when you've paid $400 for
the software.

I tend to find the speed of the IBuM programs to be the main benefit, I
find all the other frilly bits a liability. It's taken me several days
to work out how to remove something that downloaded from a site - to add
extra functionality to their web site.

The bloody thing forces their site as your home site, and is completely
unchangeable no matter how many times you re-set your home site URI,
it replaces your e-mail signature with their advert, and is not
uninstallable.

Nor are you given any indication of what it does when it's going to
install itself. You've no idea what function it gives you, (so you
could decide whether to bother with it), you're not told whether it
was essential to view their site (like whether it were some flash style
of viewer applet), or whether you're just adding something unneccessary.

I've had to go ploughing through the registry, the various batch files,
and trying to identify all the various stupidly (and uselessly) named
executable files in the Windows directory.

I'd refute that. Only occasionally has some program (written by a
complete git) trashed my hard drive (it's even survived, without any
problems, the occasional powerfailure during write access), but I've a
friend who re-installs windows several times a month (after completely
re-formatting the drive too).

And I can think of more people who've had to do this sort of malarkey
with their IBuMs, than their Amigas. From everything I've seen, anyone
who's repeatedly getting drive invalidations on their Amiga, either has
a knackered drive itself, or inadequate system power.

I tried to use IE to access AFB, or more to the point, my space on

wasn't a fault at the server at this moment in time), I could dial in on

I've no idea what the problem is. I've had trouble with IBrowse in the

down. I don't know if the password is different from what I wrote down,
as you can't read the cookie information in IBrowse (I've never been

it will work or not).

Before any type on SCSI, on my hardware wish list first comes a graphics
card, then a fast serial, then a soundcard (although these last two
seem to be mutually exclusive,A1200 having only one clock port...)

As a matter of fact, if you were on here less it wouldn't be the same,

A. No

Therefore you cannot use it. Unless you wait for a boxer or a PCI

Generally external as PCI ones generally use the PC processor to do some of
the work. The great thing about PCI modems is that you don't have to worry
about getting the right cable, right transmission speed, etc

There are both PPC and 68K ports of UAE available for the Amiga,

they don't even reach A500 speed on a PPC system so I'd be surprised if

I don't see how installing to HD would help, as the game wibbles by
excessive hard ware hitting (the disks are even NDOS) but I'll have a
peek an aminet and my AFCDs.
I'll let you know if I find something which works.

They are both an inconveniance that nobody wants to have to
endure, and they both take longer than you really want them
too. Hence similar, and therefore comparable.

Can't you read? Or are you just being pedantic?

My take is that neither should happen unless you actively
f*ck about with your system. My hard disk hasn't invalidated
in God knows how long (certainly not since I installed OS3.5)
and I don't reinstall Windows willy-nilly like some idiots
do, because I don't mess in the first place.

> > Scandisk is done in minutes, in fact it's
>

Dead right. My not-invalidating-disk thing is probably due to
the fact that I run DiskSafe which catches disk writes and
stops the machine from rebooting in most circumstances, until
they've been written to the disk.

Everybody should install it. The only reason it isn't built in
to the filesystem is because filesystems aren't supposed to
patch system functions like that, according to OS Design Lore.

One day, I'll do a masterclass on keeping your Amiga ship-shape,
just like mine is. Then you'll see that you don't need DOpus or
PFS to hide the system to make it good, in fact you can do much
of it's job using smaller system utilities and not have megabytes
of crap installed..

The surgery is open, Mash. What are your virtual memory settings like?
What are your disk cache settings set to? What screen res are you at,
are you using the Active Desktop, etc.?

When was the last time you Defragged your disk?

Come on, I can fix all these stupid problems. What's your system
setup, like memory and disk size? Are you using the latest stable

There is a Whdload based HD installer for Deuteros it can be found on
aminet
in the archive WHDIGamesC-D.lzh which also includes installers for other
games, you will also need the WHDLoad_usr.lha archive. This installer
will
create a disk image on your HD and comes with an executable to start
the
game.
You can download the installer seperately from the whdload homepage at
http://www.fh-zwickau.de/~jah/whdload but this site seems to be down at
the moment.
