I didn't see that one, but there was one due to lack of Visa card, which
isn't the same thing as attempted to register. I've no idea where Paul has
gone, and my email to SASG asking if I could take over registrations hasn't

If you were looking over my shoulder when I typed in the

* No, because I can't register (no VISA card, that Bastard Paul
Jewell took my money and ran away with it), but I'd love to.

But I thought it was a bit harsh. Either way, "I can't, but

Hi M.,

> Methinks Ben is getting jealous of it's rival Amigactive ;) If
> they're such a teeny tiny magazine (Pinprint isn't exactly
> Future-sized ;) how come they get such nice paper, ink, and
> decent printing?

It's not jealousy, I know exactly why Future prints us on crap paper, why we
end up with end-of-bin inks, why we only have 92 pages and so on. It's down
to money, pure and simple.

> They sure can't get the subscriber/reader base of an established

Nope, they certainly can't. Even if they were selling twice the number of
mags we are...

I have a Concierto, and it suits my needs...but I wouldn't recommend it if
you have a Zorro slot to spare. The reasons I got the Concierto: 1) it was
cheap, and 2) I DIDN'T at the time have a spare Zorro slot. If you're just
looking to PLAY music, it's really a nice card...but if you want to RECORD
music [especially for CD burning] on an Amiga 4000, it's not gonna be a heck
of a lot of help unless your A4000 is accelerated...i.e. at least an 040/40.

> > > Nope, they certainly can't. Even if they were selling twice
> > > the number of mags we are...
>
> > Selling to shops, or selling to people?
>
> Doesn't make a lot of difference if you are on sale or return.

Are you (ISTR the CD is but not the DD), and/or are Amigactive?

AFCD=yep, AFDD=nope, AA=yep (think so WHSmiths probably wouldn't take it on
firm sale anyway).

Hey...just got my Tekmagic 060 installed in my A4000 and it's working well,
except that what I thought was a double-sided 32MB SIMM is only recognized
as a 16MB SIMM. I checked the jumper settings to make sure they were set for
a double-sided SIMM, and they were. [Any other jumper setting made the
accelerator think it was an 8MB SIMM.]

How can I tell for sure whether the SIMM is indeed 32MB and not 16? Any way
to just look at it and tell?

Yep, read the part number and manufacturer name and go and look it up on
their website - are you sure it's not a double-sided 8M SIMM?

It could well be just incompatible memory. Not all memory is the
same, some companies hold patents on how their memory works in
subtle ways, which makes them more reliable and therefore
faster (subtley ;)

If you've got cheapo memory and the card is expecting EXPENSIVE
memory then all you can do is take it back and get some more.

This is hardly an Amiga specific problem, many older Intel
boards rely on Kingston and Samsung memory rather than cheapo
brands and unlabeled stuff.. so you have a 64Mb SIMM that
comes out as 32Mb, or two 32Mb that come out as two 16Mb..

I need metallic textures.

Like Apple's QuickTime 4 backdrop or the same sheeny
stuff you get on disk shutters, or the kind of
metal-with-lumps-in stuff you get on fire escapes,
or anything metallic like that.

24-bit or 256 colours is preferable, and I need
proper seamless textures.

Can anyone help?

TIA!

Hello all.

Sorry to post something like this here, but I am trying to doing some
damage limitation.

I am very grateful to AF for publicising our usergroup website (Thanks
Ben)

Unfortunately, My Hard drive died totally over the chrimbo period.
(Which took a fix on a PC using fdisk to getting working again). I have
lost everything, (see I knew I had something left to do - like a backup)

In short.

The information contained on the ANT website about our meeting venue is
incorrect. It is at the Venue in Enfield as stated in the AF usergroup
section.
(We couldn't get a regular meeting date there until the start of 2000).

So please ignore the Chingford meeting venue, it is the one in Enfield,
and the next meeting date is the 23rd of Jan.

Right, I'd better get the files restored before the 17th....

Regards

Mikey C

What is an Amigan doing working for a PC firm??

Actually if my hard drive hadn't done a "lazarus" I was going to buy a

If you work in the Walthamstow branch, how about becoming an ANT

Hi Paul,

> BTW, regarding you not receiving the HTML part of it. Could it be
> because your mail reader automatically snips everything after the
> signature thing -- ?

Nup. I'm using Thor. And textual types of attachments are always shown
below the main text body (binary attachments require user interaction to
view). It's not my mail server either, as I've often received HTML
mail, grrr.

I am now wondering whether picking, "receive mail as text only," at
eGroups, actually parses all mail? (Not just converting all mail to
HTML if you pick that type of mail.)

Hi Paul,

>> When I bought my Squirrel (100 meg), I bought a Surf Squirrel. It
>> didn't work at all A classic Squirrel did, however, work on my 1200,
>> but was pretty awful (impossible to boot off it, and terribly slow).

> Aaargggh! Just as I'd been convinced all would be okay, you go and do
> this to me.

Well, either get a money back guarentee. Or take your computer in and
test it at the store (this sort of thing is easier for an Amiga than a
PC). ;-)

If they balk at that. Just explain, that if they want a sale (of a not
insubstantial amount either, I might add). It's got to work on your
system (which isn't just an Amiga only type of problem). If it works,
you're buying it on the spot. If it doesn't they don't have to worry
about taking soiled goods back, or more to the point, goods they have no
idea what has been done to them.

Bye,

Re: [afb] Re: Nasty Wintel System (Ha ha ha!!!)

Hi Sealey,,

>> Isn't it annoying how the Windows update doesn't save the
>> update to the drive, then run from there. It has to save and
>> run directly, losing the original downloaded source. Very
>> stupid. But then that's typical of Microsoft.

> Actually, that's a GOOD feature, not a stupid one. With the
> frequency of updates and updates to updates from Microsoft,
> storing the original source would be just a waste of space
> on your hard drive.

Dunno about that. I've had it screw up during the procedure, and have
to start again downloading a whole mass of files. This, on a brand new
PC, not a cheap one either, and without any extra crap added to it.

>> And I wish there was an IBuM list as useful as this one.
>> Anytime I ask anyone for IBuM advice, all they can ever say
>> is re-install.

> I don't think anyone would pay attention to your problems
> anyway. Tech support tend to ignore people who mock their
> field of expertise, by making up peurile 5-year-old words
> and acronyms and inserting dollar signs into company names.

Since I wrote the paragraph you are replying to here, I'll point out
that I did not use those type of terms in that letter. Only a complete
idiot would use those sort of terms in a letter asking for support from
the people concerned. Though it's by no means an Amiga thing to refer
to IBM software in such a derogatory manner. It's so deserving of it,
it gets it from all manner of users.

>> Geezus, I don't want to patch up problems, I want to stop
>> them happening in the first place.

> There are two big reasons for PC clones exploding: crappy
> substandard hardware (read ISA, cheap PCI cards, etc.) or
> user error. Guess which one is the most common..

As users, we don't get much choice in the matter. We don't have the
resources to get the parts (dealers only), and no reliable information
about parts quality, or compatibility (just about everything has some
stupid limitations, so what do you do?).

I paid through the nose for a custom built system, from a fairly large
firm. To source the parts, build it, and test it. They failed
terribly at the job, and I've spent a lot of my own time fixing things
up. Such as:

Putting a card in a slot that conflicts with the AGP port, against the
instructions supplied with the card! Not connecting the CPU fan power.
Power LED plugged in backwards. HDD LED plugged into the keyboard lock
header. Thermal sensor that is supplied with the motherboard not
installed. Hard drive installed with screws hanging half out. Floppy
drive and hard drive sub-chassis hanging out of main chassis, only
screwed in one side, and jammed in out of place too. Technician badly
scratching the Windows 98 CD. Not installing any updates from the
service pack on a brand new system, when the service packs have been
around for quite some time, requiring a new user (who luckily wasn't a
completely new computer user), to spend hours downloading upgrades (who
luckily also already had internet access). Knowingly installing
versions of software that caused failures (DVD software decoder), when
there was another version installed too (for the hardware decoder), and
not even bothering to tell the customer not to use it, nor why.

> There are very few faults which can be traced back to
> a genuine fault in Windows or any software you run on
> your system (bar some notables), but nearly all of them
> come about from users messing about, pushing stuff that
> shouldn't be pushed (buttons AND hardware configs) and
> the idiotic (IMO) view that you can buy a quality PC for
> less than 500 - because you can't.

The only skimping I did was not paying through the nose for a 500 MHz
processor, and buying a 450 MHz one instead, knowing full well that I'll
never see any difference in performance. But I still got put through
the roller coaster of hell.

Bye,
Tim. (B.A. T.L.M.N.)

Hi Matthew,

>>> Can everybody PLEASE learn how to quote emails properly, and
>>> stop talking in shorthand!

>> That and daft quote prefixes with wierd characters, annoy me, grrr.

> Whereas people who slap and extra 5 heading at the top of the mails
> are perfectly acceptable, yes?

Yes. Several mailers do that to outgoing mail. I see no reason to be
different. That header does not cause any problems with quoting, it can
be left as is (if you're a lazy git), or stripped out completely. And
you found it necessary to add two lines of rubbish to the top of the
page yourself.

Semi-amusing, or not (the silly way you worded it), it ammounts to the
same thing). Whether you write 100 characters (made up figure) across
four lines, neatly tabulated, or smacked across two, unformatted,
virtually the same amount of data is being transmitted (an EOL character
sequence is only one more character than a space).

Lines that have daft things preceeding quoted text often require every
single line on the page to be hand edited, when replying to mail.

You'll find that several mailing lists (this one included) slap more
(lengthwise) rubbish on the bottom of each e-mail automatically. It
doesn't need to be blank line, blank line, blank line, blank line, blank
line, all polls need dates.

Bye,
Tim. (B.A. T.L.M.N.)

Hi Matthew,

> Maybe a stupid question, but how d'ya pronounce Boing?
> Bo-ing or Boing (1 sylable or 2)?

You obviously have lead a deprived life, and not spent your Saturday

Hi Donald,

> My brother was just using my Power Towered A1200 with my Microvitec
> 1438 multiscan monitor (not the M1438S with the built in speakers),
> when the screen dimmed. ..........[snip]............. Can anyone
> tell me if the monitor sounds repairable or if it is the computer

..... My car won't start, can you fix it?.......

The only way you're going to know, is to get someone to look at it.

And yes, it doesn't sound too terrible. If you've still got some
picture on the screen, then repairs probably aren't too bad.

Hi Mikey,

> When you buy a new application/program and they are still
> using those poxy 4 colour magic workbench Icons that went out

Magic Workbench icons are 8 colours. ;-) It's the original Workbench
icons that are 4 colour. Which wouldn't be quite so bad if they hadn't
designed them to look like a potato cut out stamp.

Bugs.

>
>
>
I've had it screw up during the procedure,
> and have to start again downloading a whole mass of files. This,
> on a brand new PC, not a cheap one either, and without any extra
> crap added to it.

First Law of Microsoft Software: whether it multitasks or not,
you should never try to install two things at once. Windows Update
doesn't have a clue which bits of the system and how other bits
actually update. If one of them does a forcible reboot of the
machine (a few of them do, no warning!) then all the rest will
fail. Others really do say that they can't be installed at the
same time as other updates.

If they ever update it to some kind of installer like IE5's then
it'll be fine, because it downloads them all to a place on your
drive, and then installs AFTERWARDS (so you can disconnect ;) if
you know what you're doing. Then you delete the installer files.

I'm envisaging a global kind of system for the Amiga when I get
round to finishing all my CURRENT programming projects, sort of
a cross between a task scheduler, critical update notification,
and Update Wizard (hookable by other online-aware tasks, and by
the use of special LibGuide-style routines ;)

> > > And I wish there was an IBuM list as useful as this one.
> > > Anytime I ask anyone for IBuM advice, all they can ever say
> > > is re-install.
>

[snip]

> Though it's by no means an Amiga thing to refer to IBM
> software in such a derogatory manner. It's so deserving of
> it, it gets it from all manner of users.

Even when the software ISN'T written by IBM? Or the hardware?

[snip]
> Technician badly scratching the Windows 98 CD.

They shouldn't be using YOUR licensed copy to install Windows,
you **should** get a sealed copy with the instruction manual
according to all the licenses these suppliers use. Otherwise
they've effectively bound you to the license, without your
consent, and that's a bit illegal..

Hi,

Ok, here's my thoughts on the issue

1) The OS3.5 Guide. Good for the people who are having problems installing
OS3.5, but I didn't have any problems, so it wasn't much use to me. Still
informative though :)

2) Skipping back a bit, The front cover is cool :)

3) The Marblelous review looked a bit bland, although that's probably because
of the screenshots. Too much of that bluey grey colour. I don't suppose you
can help that, though, unless there are some more colourful levels you could
have used.

4) Dunno what I'd do without PD Select nowadays. I can never be bothered
wading through stuff on Aminet, so reading PD Select gives me some idea what I
should download

5) I was expecting something longer for the Tornado 3D review, but it was
still good, even though I'll probably nevber buy it :)

6) Good review of Digital Almanac II. And a welcome review from Nick ;)

7) Skipping back again, I thought Month in View was brilliant :) Dunno why,
though :)

8) Thought the Twister Mk2 review was good. Didn't care about the product, but
I founds lots of interesting stuff about Serial ports in there.

9) two and a half grand for a bleedin' monitor! Argh! (not your fault, though
:)

10) I always like articles about other OS(s|')s, and the Unix compenidum is no
exception.

11) Another 'too much of one colour' problem. Amiga.net looks decidedly odd :)

12) I liked the DOpus guide. Loads of things I didn't know in there, but I'm
still not going to use DOpus (incase you were wondering :)

Hmm... that's as far as I've got. I'll send more if I can find anything to
comment on :)

Oi C. NO.

Come on, support the few Amiga dealers we have left. OK so they may be a little more expensive, but what do you expect with their

That`s if you buy a new one of course....

Hi Ben

> > As I say (he says, stepping back slightly), AF put this on their CD of

I can appreciate given your circumstances that you've probably got a helluva

Re: [afb] Re: Active (was Schatztruhe)

Hi Will,

> I also had a question published about extending keyboard leads but I
> felt that the answer was best-guess rather than from any electronics
> knowledge. I would actually like to know why extending IDE leads or
> keyboard leads can blow the output chip. Is it because of an
> increased load at high frequencies (due to the capacitance of the
> leads,) or what?

Because longer leads can pick up interference from other devices, and
what you're connected to hasn't got protective circuitry to look after
this. Chances are though, that you wouldn't damage things, just that it
wouldn't work so well with the long lead.

Having said that, my A1200 has a long ribbon lead from the keyboard to
my re-housed motherboard (and other peripherals), I did get some
interference, so I wrapped the lead in kitchen foil, and grounded one
end of it (old audio tech's trick for quickly eliminating noise when out
in the field - it's rumoured that one of our state television
broadcasters had a device, up at the transmitter site, wrapped up in a
turned inside-out foiled lined hot chicken bag for years, to eliminate
the interference it picked up).

>> We're a diverse bunch of people. I'm sure no one would complain about
>> the occasional hardware project, and as it stands, this is an area
>> that's not covered by AF.

> My A1200 is powered by a PC power supply which I adapted for the
> Amiga. It cost me 12 as against the then 50+ for an Amiga one. Dead
> easy project which could easily be covered. For more advanced
> readers, how about using an A500 as an oscilloscope or storage
> display unit? Well within its capacity.

I seriously doubt the A500 would have enough capability to do a useful
job of that.

Bye,
Tim. (B.A. T.L.M.N.)

Hi Neil,

>> Actually, Maplin do a relay interface board which works off a
>> centronics port and I have wondered about trying that. Evidently it
>> changes the printer commands into relay on/off and timing commands.

> So you only need a "printer driver" and then you print the commands?
> Would it work with an Amiga parallel port with its different handling
> of bidirectional signals?

I seem to remember that the Amiga was one of the first to actually have
a parallel port (as opposed to a printer port), where all eight DATA
bits were actually properly bidirectional.

Hi Kevin

> > > > > Paul C, who bought Worms after getting the AF demo
> > >
> > > > It should have won the AF reader game competition that was set,
> and missed
> > > > out to Charlie Chimp or whatever it was.
> > >
> > > It was a reader game? When was that?
> >
> > Wowzers! I knew it was originally developed on the Amiga, but I
> didn't know
> > it was an AF reader game! Yet another exclusive for AF eh?
>
> It was NEVER a reader game. AF ran a competition, Worms was one of the
> entrants, and it DIDN'T win, so it DIDN'T become a reader game.
> Instead,
> Team 17 were shown the game and the rest (as they say) is history ...

I suspect that the problem is that there were several different versions of
motherboards and if a particular version works well with whatever version
of WB you have then fine. If not, however, who do you turn to?

One thing I noticed, when Gateway said they were going to produce a new
Amiga and Mr Collas was busy making his ridiculous speeches there was a
singular absence of a help site or email help service hosted by them.
However, whilst Mr Collas was busy slagging off Microsoft, Microsoft
themselves quietly kept updating their free service of critical updates and
looking after their customers.

If the Zip drive is a SCSI drive and you have a SCSI controller, it should
work fine.

If you have a Surf Squirrel on your A600, don't expect it to work -- use a
"classic" Squirrel instead.

You may need a mount list...I use one on my A4000...

I've been using the demo version of 2.1, and I've never had a crash from it;
worst that happened was that some Javascript image rollovers wouldn't work

Hi,

I put my old Blizzard 1230-III with the scsi interface into a second hand
A1200 which I bought last week (with 3.1 ROMS) then updated it to OS3.5. The
trouble is my scsi HDs which are connected to it are slow to recognise the
scsi inteterface. There was a fix for a similar problem found on my other
A1200 with this scsi. I have put the scsi fix '1230ScsiFix' into the C: and
put the bit in S:startup-sequence

C:SetPatch QUIET

1230ScsiFix >NIL: RESIDENT

Note after setpatch. This used to work on my other machine and was working
fine on my old machine with this before upgrading to a Blizzard 1260/50 with
scsi.

My scsi chain is all working on my A1200 with the 1260scsi but the same chain
hooked onto the 1230 scsi does not work the same takes ages to boot-up. All
the devices are set as 1230scsi.device (which is the same for the 1260)

Does anyone know what this could be. I did managed to get the scsi HD's
working and copy stuff over but it was very slow.

See You

                 Cheers all the best

> (Don't we all)
>
> Does anyone know where I can get a good SVGA monitor on the cheap?

  I got my 17" Belenia 10 30 15 from Software warehouse for 160 IIRC.
Its about the cheapest 17" monitior I could find. I run it at 1024 by
768 in16 bit off my BVision. Alternativly you could go for a 15" from
Viewsonic, Sony, Iiyama or Mitsubishi these are a bit cheaper but are
probably better built than mine.

Basicly, if you want a cheap monitor you either have to sacrifice
size or quality or go for a reconditioned model.

Hi,

Pet subject here, I have several monitors - all ranging from 14" to 17" all
with digital front controls except for one. My old DELL with rotary
controls, superb colour and crystal clear, it screen knocks the spots off
all the others I have. I have been told that Dell monitors are made by
Philips but I can't vouch for it.

It would be a good idea to actually look at the picture quality before you
buy, after all you may be spending many, many hours in front of it.

Poor quality is remembered long after the small saving in price is forgotten.

>>>>>
>>>> I think that's a good point - whilst PCs have many faults, I
>>>> have had to reformat and salvage partitions on my Amiga one hell of a
>>>> lot more times than my brother has on his PC. The Amiga isn't the
>>>> perfect computer, (it has it's share of problems) it's the one that I
>>>> love using - so let's not slag off other machines for the fun of

>>> :-) I bet most Amiga owners have had to wait for their standard
>> harddisk
>>> to validate more times than PC owners have had to reinstall Windows.

>> The answer to that is change your filesystem to something like PFS

> Shouldn't have to - the operating system should work properly as supplied.

Yes but it will stop re-validation as it is not or ever required with PFS.
Something to do with it only writes from valid state to valid state (I
think), So a partition/HD will never become invalid and fail to full.

THEREFORE you should never have to wait for your HD to validate if a write
operation screws up.

Darren

Hello Darren

On 03-Jan-00, you wrote:

> Something to do with it only writes from valid state to valid state (I

>
> THEREFORE you should never have to wait for your HD to validate if a write

Though I have heard that when it does screw up, and it *does* occasionally,
the partition dies in spectacular style...

btw, I occasionally get an invalid HD due to bad software, but 99/100 times,
AmigaOS revalidates it on booting; it doesn't even take that long!

Hello,

1- I might have asked this recently b4- will the AmiJoe have a graphics card
available for it when it's released, or is that just thin air at present?

2- How much should I sell an Apollo 1240/40 + 32Mb (One of the Eyetech
overclocked 33MHz ones) for. I was hoping over a hundred pounds...

These are just to reassure myself b4 I make te leap to PPC+ BlizzardVision.

On that note- who still sells these GFX cards, I've heard they're not too
common now.

So that's three questions, really!

Hi

> Is it possible to use my Iomega External ZIP-drive on a Amiga 500/600? I
> think I heard that it was not possible but I am not sure.

Yes, providing you have a suitable SCSI interface (if it is SCSI) or if you
have the special cable (I think Blittersoft sell it) for Parallel use.

Looks like the real reason for shutting down the web directories may
well be that the maintainers have simply got bored with updating the
sites, and no longer have the motivation. This is the impression I
formed over the last few months as the AWD news page has been updated
far less frequently than it used to, say, a year ago.

If this is the case, then fair enough - you can't expect a person to
be interested in doing something for their whole life. What I find
strange is why they didn't bother to pass the AWD on to a new owner.

AmiGameBoy looked promising, but it plays up on most

It's almost as if they are conceding defeat to V=B3...

It's just there to do a job. The Amiga may be falling behind with

I couldn't afford a new computer even if I wanted one and have to

I am also pleased to announce the first release of WarpPNG.datatype,

Ok, I think I'll plug screaming.net then :) Not having tried BTInternet (and
not really wanting to :) I can't comment on that, but Screaming.net have
recently got a very good system from no-where, and now I haven't had an enaged
tong when trying to connect since they upgraded (a couple of months ago). I'm
also getting betweek 4 and 7k/sec download rates, and they've recently upped
their disconnection time to 3 hours, rather than two :)

And it's free every weekday after 6pm (till 8am the next day) and all weekend.
The only real catch is that you have to change phone companies from BT To
LocalTel, but Localtel are 10% cheaper than BT anyway, use the same network
(Localtel are BT resellers) and offer the same services as BT!

Oh, and to sign up, you need a pdf viewer, as the Localtel signup form is in
PDF format (http://www.localtel.co.uk). Localtel will contact BT on your
behalf, and if BT don't transfer your account within a certain time, Localtel
will probably end up suing BT again :))

> I'm beggining to get into Gameboy emulation recently
> takes me back to the days of Mario World) but I cant
> seem to find a good emulator for my system
> (A1200,030,
> FPU,8MB, various speedup patches and hacks running).

Try AmiGameBoy version 0.92; look at
http://www.emuclassics.com/aer for the link and info,

Hi Ian

> Indeed. Plus as a 16 yr old student , i don't have the amount of cash
> to warrant having to pay the 40/50 quid to buy PFS (it's either OS3.5
> or this.)

If your having trouble, IMO go for PFS instead of OS3.5, so long as you get it later when you can afford it.

>And then there's the hassle of having to reformat and
> reinstall all the software on the hard drive - the exact thing i`m
> trying to avoid in the first place :-)

But surely your backing up your files? If you are, then it`s no problem to do a reformat, your programs can be reinstalled from
floppy/CD, just back up your data/prefs files.

If not, and your drive keeps on needing to be validated, you should be backing up now whilst you still can.

The simplest, quickest and cheapest way is to copy the backup stuff onto another partition, and instal PFS one partition at a time.
But of course you need room to do this.

Jon

Hi Sandy

> > :-) I bet most Amiga owners have had to wait for their standard harddisk
> > to validate more times than PC owners have had to reinstall Windows.
>
> I'd have thought that M$ would have come up with something better than
> Scandisk by now though.

I`ve had to sit through lots of scandisks, much more often than a revalidation. This PC hangs every 3 weeks or so just going
through the shut down routine, even though all programs are closed before hand.

And since I bought PS2, I`ve had no revalidations to do whatsoever, even with all the abuse I give my Amiga. I was very suprised
the the mention of occassional stability problems in the PS3 review, it`s never failed on me once.

Apparently, according to http://www.emucamp.com:

Gateway Sells Amiga to Former Employee
(posted by lilac - 10:26)
Just when we think gateway will shelve Amiga hardware
forever, they sell the rights to a former Amiga
employee, Bill McEwen.

Anyone know anything about him?

To anyone remotely interested

>

Since we`re into the plug lark, I would like, once again to draw your attention to www.totalise.co.uk . You pay the normal local
rate calls, but you get shares every month depending on your usage, plus bonus shares for this and that.

I have been using them for 4 months now and have received 710 shares, all readilly tradable and currently at 132.5p each - OVER
900 in value!!! Infact at this price it`s worth while staying on line even if your not using it. (of course prices may go down as
well as up). To put this in comparrison, my internet phone bill for the last 12 months was 150 (including 3 of the 4 with
totalise).

So, me with over 3500 of student loan still hanging over me (graduated in 96) is going to be using this to splash out on a G4.

If you`re interested please mail me and I`ll refer you so if you join I get another 25 shares /money grabbing t**t

why have them?
The only reason I could POSSIBLY think of having them for is if they
absolutely REQUIRE the precise way the Chips are engineered to create a

As for the OS, I dunno.

Hi,

> Although not having the OS patents are a bit of a mystery - why would
> they want the Custom Chip Patents? They are slow, out of date, and to
> be honest, quite poo really.

The AmigaOS is not patented, it's copyrighted! I agree that the custom
chips
are slow (1982 origins!), but they are still versatile and are actually
ok'ish when you take into account their age... (Paula is 16-17 years
old as a concept..., AGA as a concept is about ten years old...)

Just to clarify one major mis-understanding about the Amiga purchace:

* Amino have everything about Amiga, copyrights, patents, names,
trademarks etcetera; so long as it pre-dates 1997!!!! *
Gateway has kept all the post 1997 patents, see an older issue for AF
to see what they are. In effect, Amino has complete control over the
so-called 'Classic Amiga', lock, stock and (two smoking :)) barrels.

I for one am excited at the prospects of Amino developing Amiga,
despite what some people think, i'm an eternal optimist, i think you
have to be in the Amiga industry.... ;-)

Hello Ken

> I put my old Blizzard 1230-III with the scsi interface into a
> second hand A1200 which I bought last week (with 3.1 ROMS) then
> updated it to OS3.5. The trouble is my scsi HDs which are connected to
> it are slow to recognise the scsi inteterface. There was a fix for a
> similar problem found on my other A1200 with this scsi. I have put the
> scsi fix '1230ScsiFix' into the C: and put the bit in
> S:startup-sequence
>
> C:SetPatch QUIET
>
>> NIL: RESIDENT
>
> Note after setpatch. This used to work on my other machine and was
> working fine on my old machine with this before upgrading to a
> Blizzard 1260/50 with scsi.
>
> My scsi chain is all working on my A1200 with the 1260scsi but the
> same chain hooked onto the 1230 scsi does not work the same takes ages
> to boot-up. All the devices are set as 1230scsi.device (which is the
> same for the 1260)

There is a line in 3.5:s NSDPatch.cfg for 1230scsi.device; make it
available (taking the # off ) and have a test.

Hi,

well I have just entered my details and I am told that i'll get an
email to notify me when the service begins, if it does that is.

I shall notify AFB as and when (if) anything happens....

I don't know what to say, if i don't here anything then I'll guess I'll
switch to LocalTel and Screaming.net, I'll have to use a PC to sign up
though, just to be on the safe side, eh?! :)

The only thing is that no email address on http://www.freedomi.net is
supplied to make contact.... makes you wonder! ;)

> "Amino...has purchased from Gateway (NYSE: GTW) the Amiga trademarks and
> Amiga computer systems...Gateway will retain ownership of all patents
> acquired when it bought Amiga in 1997."

> Not sure if this bit is good tho. What is "Amiga computer systems"? Surely
> that should include the intellectual rights to produce the Amigas, but if
> Gateway hold the patents how does that work, could they hold Amino to
> ransom?

IIRC the patents related to the user interface and the MCC hardware,
so PPC AmigaOS and PPC shouldn't rely on their patents.

> BTW whatever happened to those ideas of Gateway only buying Amiga for it`s
> patents, especially those on CD usage so it could sue all the other
> manufacturers?

> Actually, Datel Electronics have now moved to a place called Stone.
> it's a few miles South, in between Stoke and Stafford - I only know
> this because I passed it the other day when i was going to the Stoke

Why Stone I wonder? Hmm possibly grants.

Anyway which fayre was that then, Trentham? Moat House Hanley? I get

Is there anybody out there (preferabley Australian) that would be interested
in a couple of old A500's plus a couple of 1084S monitors and an A590? The
disc drive on one of the 500's doesn't want to work and I know nothing
about electronics to pull it apart and tinker with it. (This from someone who
breaks out into a cold sweat just changing the clock battery on my
accelerator) There's even a book on AmigaBasic included.

All this for no charge. :) They're no good to me, as I said I wouldn't know
how to tinker with them. They were given to me by a well meaning friend
who know's I like the Amiga.

I said Australian, mainly because there ain't no way, no how _I'm_ paying to
to ship them overseas. :)

If anybody's interested it'd be easier to mail me off list, I get the AFb as
the digest and trying to read through a weeks worth gives me a headache.

Well, I've had my say.

> OK once it's unpacked.

Yup, in the archive they're shafted (future) but when unpacked again then

I agree, my Amiga (on average) has had a good day if any hard disk
partition has only been invalidated once! ;) Yesterday HD1:, PS2K: and
DATA: were invalidated, all is ok now though. Mind you I am running
AmigaOS 39 (3.0) which not that stable on my over bloated A1240T!

soon, I dunno, I've got a phone bill to pay soon! :(( It's FFS that's
the problem, a 1987 fs! :((

ScanDisk sucks, let me just say in the past I have 'repaired' PCs where
the problem was bad hard disk blocks, ScanDisk always crashed at a
certain point, I sorted it in the end though... ... with a bodge...

Well, not strictly true since you can disable scandisk from kicking in auto-
matically on boot up. I can tell you it IS a pain in the arse, or rather was
since it has been disabled here. I am not aware of a method of disabling the
Amiga from validating the drive on bootup, but if there is (short of upgrad-
ing to PFS), or a way of speeding it up I'd be interested to know.

Oh before I go, has anyone any solutions for 'fixing' a Zorro daughterboard?
Mine doesn't always work on boot-up, and I suspect it's due to the connectors
not lining up correctly, ie the tracks in the slot it connects into do not
always meet. At the momenet I am forced to take the case off and jiggle the
board about a bit (left right up down etc) and randomly power up to see if it
is working. Any suggestions would be welcome :)

Indeed, ScanDisk can be disabled...

You can speed up re-validation I found by increasing a drive's buffers.
In a cli or Workbench..Execute Command (RAmiga E) type in:

addbuffers >nil: {partition} 1024

where {partition} is the drive re-validating e.g: HD1:, NET: etc. 1024
is the amount of buffers BTW

Hi Satan,

> I've being trying (rather un-sucessfuly) to install a Zip100. It's
> an internal Atapi but it will not play ball.
> When I turn the machine on it spins up and clicks away if there's a
> disk in it but when I come to running HDToolBox the only enrty in the
> drive list is my HD! So I can't format anything to use on it. I'm sure
> the jumper config. is right, IDEFIX is set to mount it as HD, I'm not
> sure if that should be floppy mount but who the hell cares!

So what jumper settings are you using then? I've got mine in an IBuM,
and with no jumpers set at all (slave mode), but that would depend on
what else shares the port.

On mine, the jumpers nearest the IDE connector are for cable select
(not likely to need setting), the middle ones for drive A (IBuM use
only), and the last two nearest the power connector are for master.

Bye,
Tim. (B.A. T.L.M.N.)

> Thanks for the info - I will order a genlock next week and have a go.
> I built a fade-to-black video box recently, as the sync signals are
> unaffected I assume that it would be ok to put in line with the video
> feed to the genlock?

Video source -> fader -> GenLocker -> recorder ought to work fine,
likewise would source -> GenLocker -> fader - recorder, just as long the
fader doesn't foul up the sync and colour burst signals.

Some GenLockers already have extensive fader options built in. Mine
only has a inserted Amiga video fader (fade to background video), but
I've seen ones where you can fade the incoming video, and the inserted
Amiga video via seperate controls.

> I want to build a unit which will separate the line sync and back
> porch signals, clamp them and then reconstitute them. Do you know of
> an Internet resource of circuits?

Sorry, no idea here. In the past I've seen video fader circuits in
electronics magazines (I've got one or two stashed somewhere, but I have
several hundered magazines, and they're not catalogued very usefully),
but none of the circuits I saw did a good job of maintaining signal
quality.

The circuits I've seen usually suffered from appalling methods of black
level clamping that crushed syncs, caused over-all general signal
distortion, and didn't really clamp to a fixed level either.

For what it's worth, also cleaning up the vertical sync and blanking
periods is useful for playing tapes with bad tracking problems (or
chewed tape edges), as some TVs have trouble with vertical lock in these
situations, and a good vertical sync restoration circuit can use
alternative methods than most TVs use to determine where the sync should
really be (line counting usually).

My (professional) video mixer has a full manual and circuit diagram, if
I get a chance I'll see if I can nut out the circuit portion that
handles clamping (it uses discrete components and conventional ICs), but
you'd also need to work out how you re-insert the sync (you really need
to do it from a SPG (Sync Pulse Generator), but the SPG would need to be
GenLocked to the source video).

> It must be New Year where you are by now - so best wishes!

You too.

Bye,
Tim. (B.A. T.L.M.N.)

Anybody care to comment on how to make a link like this work when
clicked on in Thor? Quite apart from how the URI has become split
across lines, that's only one part of the problem, GetNet doesn't
appear to like certain parameters in URIs.

I mean with GetNet, sending to browser doesn't throw up the error
message that GetNet does:

Hi Will,

> Sigh, are people ever going to get away from this yah-boo
> mentality???? I have had to re-install workbench umpteen times over
> the years, my most valuable bit of Amiga software is disksalve.

I've never had to re-install Workbench. It's sat on the drive working
very nicely for about 8 years, and only finally got shovelled about for
a 3.1 upgrade last year.

> Outlook tends to send mails in HTML format by default, until you

OE sucks in many ways. Despite me continually setting it to quote text

text without any quote prefix at all. It's far worse than using a plain

Re: [afb] Re: blackborder

Hi Will,

> Many years ago when I was a TV engineer we were taught not to over
> scan the horizontal width as this caused the neck of the tube to heat
> up and over a period crack. Now, I have personally never known this
> to happen but would be interested in other peoples opinions,

All TV sets overscan, every single one of them scans over the edge of
the tube, usually by at least 5% in modern sets, upto 15% in ancient
ones.

They do this so the user doesn't see black borders, as blanking widths
are somewhat variable from set tolerance drifts, and television
broadcasters various different program sources.

Only professional video monitors, and computer monitors underscan, or do
edge to edge scan.

You'd have to overscan by a really extreme amount, or have the worlds
worst designed tube, to cause any such problem with a normal amount of
overscanning.

>Aminet,
>
>ParPortTst.lha hard/misc Parallel port Hardware & Software tester.
>
>This allow you to toggle the state of the 8 Data Lines of the Amiga
>Parallel port. It also allows the state of the ACK, BUSY and select
>lines. It is basic but great for what it does.
>
>Also look at turd_ii.lha hard/misc The Ultimate Relay Driver.
>
>This is a program written to control some of the many Relay cards
>available on the market.
>
>It should be possible to use a PC Relay card driver like those in
>Maplin as the standard PC printer port only has Uni-directional data
>lines. The other thing to check is that the Data lines are opto-
>isolated, but this is easily done, even for bi-directional ports.
>
>If you want more info on Parallel ports and interfacing, admittedly
>for the PC but useful background try,
>
>http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Bay/8302/parallel.htm
>
>Regarding Will's query about Long IDE cables and the like, the
>reason that it can go wrong is due to TTL Logic drive capabilities. A
>standard TTL logic chip can source a current of 400 micro amps for
>a logic 1 and sink a current of 16 mili amps for a logic 0. This is
>fine for PCB traces, with their 75 ohm impedances, but to drive a
>signal down a cable you need more power. The standard TTL
>device can sink enough current but not source it, so you use a
>drive chip, like a 74245 (8 bit bus transceiver) which can provide +-
>24 mA for logic 0 and logic 1. Variants of this device are used on
>buffered interfaces. They cost 25 pence each from Farnell, how
>much are these buffered interfaces?
>
>
>You might want to join the Amiga Hacks mailing list at Onelist, as
>DIY interfacing topics are one of the main points of discussion.

Hey, Paul! Can I have some Ultra super fast speedy mega CPU (aka the 68040)?
<sb>

> Well seeing as the first and last four are locked by WB, and I only
> have 8, you won't be surprised to find you're right! But does it
> matter?

Yes, if you use programs on the Workbench screen that need the last
four pens to be free. But if you use these programs on a different
screen, then no, it doesn't matter.

> I just want to be able to play mp3s at max possible speed.

Well, that's an easy one. Get MPEGA if you haven't already got it, and
use the following command line:

   mpega -i -C -D -F 22050 -x 22050 -m -T -I -f 0 -t 5 -q0 -p20 -b128

and put the path and filename of the MP3 file at the end (but only at
the end, otherwise MPEGA will get confused).

Seeing as you have a 040 (whereas I only have a 030), you can afford
to bump the quality up a bit. The options here will play all MP3s
smoothly, though it will take over your machine while it's playing
unless you change the -p option (priority) to less than 10. Just type
'mpega' on it's own to get a rundown of all the options.

afb-ot getting more unreliable? What are you talking about, fool?
<sb>

> Hello you dull afb type people ;p,

Oi! I may be dull, but at least I'm sane! Sort of... ;)

>> into a gibbering wreck by the time they're finished ;)

> I don't know why you're smiling. That statement is completely true.

Exactly. That's why you must leave!

> We've already turned Neil Bollock into a gibbering wreck (although

I assume that first 'o' in Neil's surname was a typo :)

> Norbert's 'normous norberts...) and he's happy now. In fact,

Hmm... no comment :)

> Go on, join afb-ot, you know it makes no sense! Go on, go on, go on,
> go on, go on! GO ON!!!!

No :P

> Join afb-ot or we'll kill you!

Erm... okay, when you put it like that :)

EOT, and I may do it. Or I may not. :P

Oh, no! It's fool, muttering something about afb-ot again!
<sb>

[don't want to know what goes on in afb-ot]

> Oh yes you do! (well it is panto season, and yes, I know I've

Oh, no I don't ;)

> already used that one on afb-ot, but I liked it so much I thought it
> deserved a wider audience :)

You're insane ;)

>> in private mail, we don't want to turn afb into an extension of
>> afb-ot... well, not any more than it already is ;)

> afb-ot is supposed to be an extension of afb! It's supposed to be

I know, but we don't want to turn the original ML into an extension of
the extension (or something like that ;)

> read them on afb-ot - it'd interfere with the sheer madness :)

And who really cares about who invented joypads - they suck anyway ;)

Ah, I give in. You've got me on the list :)

Anyway, I think we should call this EOT, before we get complaints.
This isn't afb-ot, remember ;)

Don't bank on it :) They seem to call me that. And how many times in my life
do you think I've heard it? Yet I still refrain from hurting anyone :)

Hello,
=

I am an independent entrepreneur. I educate people on financial and tax st=

I have found a way to substantially reduce or possibly eliminate all TAXES!=
!! To answer the first question you will ask...the method is both legal an=

There is, of course, a cost involved. I feel that it is minimal compared t=

If you are open to this information please call me at (800) 320-9895 x 6796=

P.S. All you CPA's out there...you don't know about this one.

Hey!
> > So who's gonna be the sad gimps on here on
> Christmas
> > day? hehe
>
> That'll be me then :) Only to download mail and
> possibly send some if I have
> time. If I don't check my mail everyday, it REALLY
> mounts up...

Know what you mean, it's all these mailing lists! AA,
AFB, Ministry of Sound, UK Garage list, get about 450
a day! Maybe a feature on sorting out emails would be
a good idea for AF?....

So Neil, you're on here late, hows the diskmags going?

Regards

Hi all,

I hear that WinQuake,GLQuake,QuakeWorld & GLQuake World source
code has been released at the following URLs :-

ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/source/q1source.zip
ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/idgames/idstuff/source/q1source.zip
ftp://ftp.3dgamers.com/pub/3daction/00archives/quake/unsupported/q1source.zip
ftp://ftp2.3dgamers.com/pub/3daction/00archives/quake/unsupported/q1source.zip

So could someone please inform me when an optimised version of this
great 3D classic is available for download, as I would dearly love to
be able to play this game on my Blizzard Vision PPC along side
WipeOut2097. Especially on the internet through Quake World.

My reply to your questions is as follows:

Where, when etc.

Never - you wanna use your Amiga? You're just gonna have to bolt, build and
add on to your existing setup - it gets rougher and harder the longer we
wait.

There will not ever be a new Amiga.
