Well, he will be back. Sure, he has a nice training PC but soon he will be off to Dixons for buying a BlaBlah card or a DooDah thing to keep on track with the other PC owners. Okay, he will gain new friends: The drugstore-owner will be welcoming him with open arms to supply loads of head-ache pills..

So within a few weeks he'll be back with his Amiga hooked up to the 17"-er and the rest of the system as cup-holder. ;=))

Hi,
Why the hell is it being stopped? I acept it may be 'cos of production
costs, but you could at least leave it on the CD ;)

After all, that don't cost any more, and only takes up the space of a single
DMS image.

And then it would give subscribers the incentive to buy a CD-ROM. Agreed?

Hi,
OH! You mean the bit about the rumour about Poo being a hex-edited
Version? aah. gotcha now.

My brother was reading thru Gaz' readme's once and saw that he'd put these
in the feature list:

   Supports Version command.
   Supports $POO command.

And he just laughed at how someone could claim that the first one in that
little list above coul eb called a 'feature' ;)

And on the subject of getting your screen back to normal, it works fine with
me even if I do move a window! I just press ESC and it restores it
perfectly. Maybe i'll con him into doing a GUI for it ;)

Hi,
I emailed the two companies above asking for them to convert to the Amiga
the sequel to Frontier. You know, that First Encoutners one.

And get this.

They said that they were thinking about it (well, DI did) and that they were
waiting for Braben or whoever is doing it to finish Elite 4, and then they
would try and convert both over so that Amiga owners had all 4 games.

I think thats what tthey meant anyway. I interpreted it as that ;)

So, if I offered you my PPC card, (coz I'm upgrading to G3 when

bad) of PPC cards??

Personally speaking, I've had a couple of minor niggling problems with
PPC, but they were fixed quickly enough. Now I have a fast, stable
system and the good points defintiely outweigh any bad points.

ROTFL!!!! I hope he enjoys his P.C.....most of my workmates have them and the
problems they encounter are nothing short of horrendous.Installing a game
seems to be the favourite way to completely wipe your setup. Not being able to
connect to the Internet/mail is another and lets not forget the biggest....my
P.C. lost the mouse/sound card/video card when I next rebooted!
Installing windows 98 in place of 95 tends to destroy their machine as well
with errors like "Please contact your vendor" appearing and/or failing to
boot after the instal. As for plug and play scanners.....Hehehehehe!

PC's aren't that crap ONLY WIndows. Thats why I have SuSE Linux. But I
require Windoze98 for my Open University course material (not just fo

Of course, but at the time the Linux announcement they said they were on

I have to admit that dropping QNX was the catalyst. I was pretty confident
about the Amiga's future - but Amiga's announcement undermined this
confidence and "gutted" my faith in the Amiga platform. I have been pretty
pessemistic ever since.

They HAVE to release the kernel - GPL. But WHO will develop for an OE on
top of the Linux kernel when the can simply release a Linux version that
works across multiple plaforms and reaches a wider audience (including
Amiga MCC). As far as I can tell the OE is simply Java stuff ontop of the
Linux kernel with an Amiga widows manager for X. Open Source is a Windows
killer. So what chance does Amiga have. If their is any innovative stuff
then the Linux community will simply make their own open source equivalent
- there is plent of Java VM around.
>

It was really to point out the cost of equipment. What Amiga equipment
could I buy for this amount? A pretty sh**** PPC card and gfx card (even a
G3 will be 600 only a little less than I am spending, yet I will have a
17" monitor, HD, DVD, 128 SDRAM). I had been saving for the new Amiga.
Now it is not coming anytime soon. I have not bought a new computer for
about 7 years (maybe more, testament to the Amiga's durability). But my
Amiga no longer fulfills all my requirements and their are no new machines
available (despite promises)

I am sorry. I cannot identify with the so called new Amiga. I have become
increasingly aware that Amiga Inc are not really interested in the Amiga.
From Gateway Executive saying that Amiga Inc "is definitely not a computer
company." to a recent article that claimed GW paid $14m for the Amiga
treasure chest of patents with the intention of claiming royalties from
other companies infringing these patents.
Also the Playstaion2 seems similar in concept to the new Amiga(and running
Linux I believe)
I will continue to use my miggy as is, ut really it will be in
semi-retirement.
A sad day indeed.

Cutting down on the off-topic trivia often results in an increase in
more serious, on-topic discussions.

Stomping on such behaviour on cu-list resulted in a very interesting
thread on AmigaObjects, Java, security and broadband Internet
connections.

Trivialising everything can lead to people refraining from posting more
serious messages.

SOME of it was my own work, just about 3 lines ;) And it is the ONLY thing

Yes. I am. But that does not mean my miggy suddenly becomes completely
redundant.
No I did not lie. My miggy will stay at my parents so I can access the

In short a bucket of overpriced shite - and I should know seeing as I make a
living working on a PC magazine. Unless the Viewsonic monitor is a flat
panel like the one I lent to SEAL at World of Amiga - in which case the
price would be about right.

I normally refrain from getting involved in these 'I'm pissed off with the
Amiga so I'm getting a PC instead' threads - but I found this so amusing I
had to chip in.

Intel has just slashed the price of the Celeron range for a reason - vendors
are avoiding them like the plague and more to the point the AMD Athlon (K7)
is set to wipe the floor with it at the low end of the market.

Returning to the point of this mail though - it seems our misguided afb-er
has been charged top dollar plus a bit more on each and every component - Oh
dear! This just goes to show that its not only the Amiga market that suffers
from a bit of artificial inflation, but for those who are interested, here's
what it should have cost - just for the comedy value:

Celeron 400mhz - 65
128mb 100mhz SDRAM - 75
16mb 3dfx AGP gfx card - 30
PCI 128 sound card 28
8gb HD - 75
17" Viewsonic monitor (not flatscreen) - 110
5x DVD 40x CD-ROM Drive - 58
Win98 & SuSE Linux 6.2 - 25
Total cost: 466

But perhaps more interesting is that in real terms - Our unlucky user will
probably be no better off than they were with a 680x0-based computer.

Cheers

You're possibly right, but to make that decision now? It seems to defy
logic.

Your choice I suppose, but have you actually used this stuff for any
length of time? I use wintel at work and my sister, Parents and
In-laws have all recently bought PCs and, yes, they're shiny and new
and they have big screens and nice icons, but it really is all smoke
and mirrors. It's fine if you're new to the game or have only ever
used wintel, but trying to achieve anything slightly out of the
ordinary is like drawing teeth, and in my experience the nicest thing
about the Amiga is that it makes the extrordinary ordinary. I really
don't think you'll enjoy it, but you've spent your money. You've made
your bed - now you're going to have to lie on it :/

Sorry Ken, I can't think of any way to achieve what you want with MD2.
Although a good basic newsreader, it's not that configurable. To do all the
"fancy" but very useful stuff, you need to use a dedicated usenet reader.
I don't want to start a Thor/Newsrog battle, but really, you should try the
demo's of both and see if you feel that the investment is worth it for what
you want from a newsreader.

Hi all

I have just got round to listening to the MP2 files on the CD, and
IMHO Jim Collas has missed his vocation.

CEO of a small technology business? No, not really. Southern Baptist
Minister. I think so.

The content of the speech was hazy and didn't really tell us anything
we hadn't heard before, but I felt tingles down my spine as I
listened to him.

Anyway, the crux of the matter, especially following the recent poll
and Alan defecting to the peesee. Can we trust Jim? Well, he's either
the greatest showman since P T Barnum, or he has a passion and
conviction that will power Amiga onwards.

Re listen to the MPs and decide for yourselves, but I'm now definately
here for the long haul :)

Actually it is a bit more than a chat show, it is a daily computer and
internet show on NBC Europe.

> Do we really need this?

He is supposed to talk about Amiga's past, Commodore and Escom, etc. And
while I agree that he is not what you would call a marketing guy, does
not have complete technical understanding of the Amiga, he should know
about its history. He was the one who kept the company going through two
bankrupts. Most of you seem to think he is a bit ridiculous, but you
have to keep in mind that English is not his native language. He might
get all the words right, but maybe he lacks a bit of "feeling" for the
English language. That's why he might convey the image of a small,
freaky German. I have seen interviews with him on German television, and
he left a quite natural impression on me.

pronounced Dum freece :)
If there was a PPC box available I would consider buying one and running
Linux. Macs are way overpriced as are the forth coming G3 cards. I am not
willing to spend hundrds of pounds to still have an underpowered machine.
Although it would probably trounce a PIII 500 with Windoze, Linux is
considerably better and I quite fancy playing QIII on Linux. All my mates
have long since moved to PC's (except one - although none have sold their
Amigas). I decided last Christmas that I would give it until Christmas 99
for a new Amiga to appear, but I need Windoze compatabilty now (uchhhh)
so.......

hmmm, from where. I shopped around alot and the above is considerably
cheaper than anywhere else ( using Computer Shopper mostly ). The big
manufacturers are charging at least a grand for the above. (btw BX
motherboard not cheapo celeron only m/b. gfx card 3dfx voodoo 2000). The
cheapest I could find a 17" monitor was about 150 with 180 for a decent
brand (inc vat). 25 for Windoze and SuSELinux. Really? SuSE 6.1 cost me
25 a few months back - but that was direct from Suse in Germany with 5cds,
support and manuals. As to Windoze yo can get second hand but suppliers
charge from 60. Have I been looking in the wrong places?
Unfortunately I need windoze for the Open University otherwise I would be
content with Linux.
Hell Eyetech charge 599 for a Cyrix 333 MII, 32mb 100mhz ram, 24x cdrom
with crap gfx and sound. Although it has siamese rtg 2.1 tv tuner and
scandoubler/monitor switcher. I considered getting one as I could put my
1200 in the EZ-Tower...but it doesn't even come with amonitor & I already
have the infinitive tower anyway.

Hi Alan

> The register has reported that the PIII and Athlon are rubbish (bang for
> buck against the K6 and Celeron)

Mike Magee's disillusionment with the PIII and the Athlon is based more on
the fact that the market for them (along with the K6 and Celeron) is
completely saturated, rather than just on pure technical arguments. He and I
went to Germany recently to meet with AMD - so he knows full well that
technically it is a superior x86 chip - it's just buggered by flaky demand
and crap margins right now.

BTW - I know the Register is good - but it is also like The Sun - just
because it printed something, does not mean it is 100% accurate. Try
exploring a few other technology news sites as well, such as Computing's for
example at www.computingnet.co.uk) to add balance to your intake of
technology information.

> hmmm, from where. I shopped around a lot and the above is considerably
> cheaper than anywhere else ( using Computer Shopper mostly ).

Well that explains it - you need to ditch the copy of shopper and learn to
shop around properly. That means computer fairs and technology-rich shopping
areas, like Tottenham Court Road, as well as the Internet. Sites like QXL
shift gear that even undercuts what I quoted.

> The big manufacturers are charging at least a grand for the above.

Well what do you expect! For example, Gateway has an assembly plant
employing 4,000 workers that cost 600million to build, likewise with Dell,
Compaq, Time, Tiny, IBM, Acer etc - brand names equal bigger overheads and
inflated prices for the same components a local back-street shop would use
to slap a PC together for half the cost - that's how things are in the
desktop market right now.

> (btw BX motherboard not cheapo celeron only m/b. gfx card 3dfx voodoo

> brand (inc vat). 25 for Windoze and SuSELinux. Really? SuSE
> 6.1 cost me
> 25 a few months back - but that was direct from Suse in Germany

[ Snip ]

OK, allow an extra 30 for the graphics card. I forgot to factor in a
motherboard - a decent BX-based board will set you back about 30. Apart
from that the original quote is still valid, and already included a
Viewsonic 17inch CRT monitor. Either way - you're throwing away more money
that you need to on your new dust-bucket.

Regarding your other comments - I refer you to my previous statement - ditch
your copy of Comp. Shopper and learn to shop for computers properly. Try
getting out of your armchair to find a good deal instead of flicking through
one mag full of mail-order dealers passing on their inflated overheads to
you.

> Hell Eyetech charge 599 for a Cyrix 333 MII, 32mb 100mhz ram, 24x cdrom
> with crap gfx and sound.

Yes and they also sell a Fujitsu thermal printer for 50 when Morgan's
currently sell the same one for 10. Eyetech are far from the cheapest
company in the Amiga market and make for a poor example to back-up your
dying point.

Oh - and on another note - I forgot to say earlier that your original
comments were both childish and pathetic. If you can't string together an
intelligent criticism without resorting to rudeness more suited to a Carry
On film - don't bother sharing your ill-reasoned opinions with the rest of
us.

Enjoy your PC - and may you haemorrhage a fortune in cash to keep it
struggling along in the months ahead :)

Hi,
Firstly, it DOES NOT RENAME *VITAL* SYSTEM FILES!!!!

Does anyone use MagTape? I don't. I don't know anyone else who does, even
those with magnetic tape drives!

Secondly, you can edit the command anyway! Just load up
ENVARC:Irritator/Irritator.cmds intoa text editor and change it!

Thirdly, I'll upload a (fixed) version to my site tonite. even tho it
doesn't need fixing.

It is NOT a destructive command. Destructive would be delete or format,
commands which I would NEVER put in it.

Besides, if you leave it for long enough, it may rename it back ;) (check
the .cmds file)

Well maybe they are hardcoded with a certain amount of randdomness. Say

<mock code>

If Processor=68030
  diff=Rnd(5)
  murfins=murf(3)+diff
endif

where murf(3) is the Murfin value for a 68030. We just don't knoo until gaz

Doh! He has hard coded the values for the CPU's already! ie. they will
always produce the same results no matter what processor you run! In BB2
you have a command that will return a value to tell you what cpu is
available! He has used this and it returns a fixed value for you're CPU!
I'm not trying to make you look stupid here, but take a look for yourself!
Run it on a system with the same CPU as your own. the value that tCPU
returns will be identical to the one on your own computer! Then try sysinfo
or AIBB and you will see that there is a slightly different result! Use
you're brain man!

I think he was getting more at the fact that if he`s hardcoded them
and what is the point in gathering them back if they are going to be
the same, and I can see his point, but as someone else pointed out,
you dont know what hes done to get the number,.. all I know is
that there is absolutely NO counting going on, and IMHO, you cant
have a CPU test if your not counting instructions... and anything
that doesn`t disable to system while it`s doing these calculations
is already more unreliable than the average unreliable (but still
not faked) benchmarker..

What gets me is the way he`s gone out of his way to say that this
program is a really good benchmarker, and out of his way to
fool everyone (with gathering fake results and all)..
into thinking it actually does something productive.
Not that the program is crap or anything (though it is that
isn`t what bothers me).
It just goes to show how shallow he is.

Hi!

Following Dave Cusicks' AmigaNet column in the mag, but have run into

followed by an fatal IBrowse one so I had to reboot. The thing is, do I

unstable. I have as standard on my system mpega.library (WarpOS) and
use Songplayer
with this usually. Can I spool through Songplayer using CLI? If so
could someone

There a a couple of small local shops/suppliers here that I approached.

who was offended.

I love fiddling about with Linux. It should keep me occupied for a while.
New machines from Amiga Inc and/or Phase 5 seem to be at least 6 months
away now. I wish Amiga Inc the best of luck (if they really believe in the
Amiga). I can not see how an OS so closely linked to Linux can create its
own market. I can only see the Amiga OE functionality being incorporated
into future Linux distro. No Linux user will touvh it because it is
proprietary. They will simply engineer their own open source equivalent.
No developers will support it because it will be Linux compatable -
therefore they will reach a wider platform by developing a Linux version.
Open Source means that developers, manufacturers and users are no longer
tied to a single (market abusing) company, like Microsoft.
I do not believe many develops or users will be willing to subscribe to a
proprietary OS ever again.
But I do not think Amiga are interested in the computing market. They have
their sights set on a potentally bigger market. They are aiming at the
set-top box / console market. As has been suggested - ATI were working on
a set-top box and are/were the gfx chip supplier for Amiga. The Sega
Dreamcast and Playstation2 seem to be more "computer set-top boxes" with
optional keyboards and mice, as opposed to conventional consoles. Also
Motorola has the Blackbird. All of which seem to have internet and DVD
movie capabilities.. All of which will be direct competition to the Amiga
"Internet Appliances".

So you've fallen short of your deadline by four months, yet berate Amiga
for being out by around half that?

If you want a PC, just get one. No one's stopping, you don't need our
permission to leave. Why do you feel the need to make a big announcement
and try to justify it? Who are to trying to convince of the wisdom of
your decision, us or you?

But that's not what Matthrew was suggesting, nor what I was asking. What
happens to any mails that arrive between the two actions using Matthew's
suggestion?

The answer is they get lost without ever being seen.

It's a lot less hassle to open an Opus lister and delete them, or even
delete them on the web (which would also work with Neil's PC :)

I thougt it would be an interesting discussion. Thats the whole point of a
mailing list - to discuss things.
I was going to have to rent a PC - so I may as well buy one. I did not fall
short of my deadline - Amiga have missed theirs and I am not waiting around
any longer. They must have known they were late when they announced the
Linux decision or at WOA yet they continued to say otherwise. They
announce that the will be using an undisclosed ATI chipset in the tech.
brief - then a few days later says they may have to use a different chipset
as ATI may not be ready. No I do not need to justify my decision. I am
just fed up with all the lies, backstabbing and broken promises (over the
years - not just GW/ Amiga Inc). I will not be reliant on a single company
again. Perhaps "I'm off to PC land" should have been "I'moff to join the
Linux open source community"

That's a good point actually. He could've been out of the country for
a week or two on holiday somewhere. If so, he's going to get a hell of
a shock when he comes back and reads this little lot ! (how long has
this thread been running now ? Seems like forever)

Oh well, Dans comments blow that theory out of the water. He's aware
he's been rumbled. Either he's taking time out to put his 'defence'
together, or else he's got no intention of saying anything (and whilst
all the evidence seems to suggest 'guilty as hell', I can't imagine
Gaz Murfin will be particularly eager to get on here and face the
music. I reckon, whether it's deserved or not, he's feeling pretty low
right about now)

Still, I believe the saying goes... "you reap what you sow"

Cheers,

You'll be glad to hear that there's nothing nasty about it. If you
read the manual (can't remember where, you'll have to search around
for it - mine seems to have gone walkies), you'll find something
explaining why it's there. Basically, as long as you see "Fail"
alongside it in the Results column, there's nothing to worry about.
If you see "OK" there, though, then mail me back privately with a

I haven't heard much more about it, but there's supposed to be a
device in development which can hold several terabytes (1 terabyte is
1024 gigabytes, for those who don't know) of data on a single disk.
IIRC, it used holograms to do it. It might have been on BBC News =

Hello Andy,

>> The sound quality don't enter into it. Vinyls sound quality can be
>> better than CD too, but vinyl's still dying out...

> IIRC, the old black disc has a better dynamic range than CD....

Nup, better frequency range (until the disc wore down), worse dynamic
range. Dynamic range is the difference between the loudest and quietest
sounds that can be reproduced.

For what it's worth; vinyl records frequency range extends beyond the
point that anybody can hear (above 20kHz), CDs just scrape up to the
top of human hearing (20kHz), if you've got good ears; and the dynamic
range of records isn't as good as human hearing, but CDs have a greater
than human hearing dynamic range; the signal to noise ratio at the
extremes is pretty poor for both mediums, but that's to be expected
(and not really noticeable under normal listening conditions).

Mini discs are okay for their intended purpose, but can't replace proper
recording and editing equipment, because of the compression (the same
problem exists with JPEG files):

Take the original source, compress it in a lossy fashion (throw away
some of the data), uncompress it, and it seems okay.

Now to copy (or edit it), you end up re-compressing it in a another
lossy fashion, which throws away different data than before, and this
copy is signficantly worse than it could be.

You can get away with this lossy compression initially. It's applied in
an intelligent manner (it removes data that is /normally/ unnoticable),
but it's very hard to do this (unnoticably) to the same data twice, or
thrice.

Do you have the same sentiments when someone sends you a foreign file
that you can't use on your computer, but just about everyone else can?

One in a blue moon probably isn't a major hassle, though I'd hate it to
be a regular occurance on a mailing list where I commonly get several
hundred messages every few days.

By the way, I don't have a 14k MODEM (it's 33k6), but it may as well be.
I rarely get mail downloading fast (unless it's a big one), as the mail
server doesn't appear to be very quick (nor YAM), and sending lots of
little files doesn't take advantage of compression.

30k isn't toooooooo bad, I suppose, but I did once give a company a
right royal flaming for sending me a 30k+ e-mail, it was a totally
unnecessary word processor file, instead of a plain text e-mail, and in
format I couldn't read myself either (one day I shall keep a
collection of IBuM viruses to return to these sort of people). E-mail
is really just meant for sending letters, not file transfers though.

I've seen the odd few comment like this, and I can't see how this helps.
It takes a lot more time to read messages via a web page, than to
download them and read them at your leisure (without paying your ISP
either).

I wish having data on a CD would guarantee that it's good, but it's not
absolute. I have several CDs here that just don't work, or make the
drive make hideous noises as it struggles to read them. They
apparently work fine for other people (and I have a new, decent quality
drive too).

Obviously the floppy is going the way of the dodo. It's too small, and
slow. But the replacement needs to have a similar philosophy (quickly
writeable, and not totally stuffed by writing interuptions).

The Zip drive is the ideal successor to the floppy (to do the same type
of job - copying of several average size files for currently used
programs), regardless of whether there are other better mediums for
data storage and transmission. And it's usable on just about any type
of computer (if *only* there were a common filing system used on it by
every comptuter, but that's too much to wish for).

CD-ROMs, by their nature (slow to write, etc), are best for archive
purposes, and buying new software.

Hi,

I'd like to offer, for your amusement, and maybe someone might have an
answer, details of two wierd bugs that have recently occured on my
Amiga.

Thor, and the Opus FTP module do not want to download anything, unless
the Amiga is displaying a 32 colour screen. They didn't use to do
this.

I have to open Term, or YAM, and leave their screen displaying, or
downloading grinds to a complete halt.

And before anyone states the obvious, Thor and DOpus programs are on 8
or 16 colour screens, so they're not hogging CPU power, and they have
the same screen size as the screen that it works on.

Now I'd really like to know why they won't work on their own screens,
which actually should be less memory intensive.

Bye,

I use MPEGA a lot lately and it never caused any problems on my system. I presume you have a PowerPC system so maybe the PPC version is less stable. However, for MPEGA to run as supposed you really need to get the settings for this program right (i.e. set the attributes to suit your system). Best is to try the default setting of MPEGA and build from there. While trying you'd better try from CLI as this makes experimenting a lot easier.

Exactly! Why wait 5 years for something to happen, then leave just as
something does? Can't you wait 6 months to see what they're going to
do? Whether the kernel is open source or not doesn't matter, the
kernel is the smallest part of Amiga's plans.

Subject: [afb] Gareth Murfin - My Conclusions
Date: Sat, 28 Aug 1999 18:53:47 +0100
Greetings, AFBers,

/me sighs sadly
/me takes a deep breath

I've just found FakeMouse on an old CD. This program was used by
Gareth (he claims) as the basis for JoyMouse. He /says/ he only used
parts of it.

Fakemouse 4412 Bytes in Length
 JoyMouse 4412 Bytes in Length

Have a look at the binaries in Hex, and whaddaya know? They're
identical. The name FakeMouse is even in the code at one point. The
only change is "by Gareth Murfin." written over the version string.
Same deal as Poo and SetPatch97.

Look, Mr Murfin:

*Crediting the author in the documentation does not excuse stealing*
*their work. None of the claimed improvements in the documentation are*
*present in your version.*

I'm sorry, I can't continue to think there may be a valid explanation
for all this. It is clear to me now that,

*Gareth Murfin is a plagiarist, a pirate and a thief.*

I'll still look at anything he says in his defence, but I know for a
fact much of his software has been stolen from other, hard working,
software authors. The reason he has not provided proof is simply that
he has none. It cannot be done.

I'm not bothered what a nice guy he is on IRC. I don't care if "The
Dead Walk" is the best game ever released on the Amiga. I'm not
concerned one iota with all his anti-piracy statements. The fact is he
has stolen these programs and claimed them as his own.

To think he has been paid for the work of others is sickening. There's
little chance of him being taken to court for any of this, all anyone
can do is boycott all further Gareth Murfin/Alpha Software products. I
will be doing so and I suggest anyone with any sense of decency and
fair play does the same.

I've tried my level best to keep an open mind about these allegations,
but when you look at "his" work, it's impossible. I cannot condone the
threats he's received, but I can understand the frustration those who
called him must feel.

Gareth, if you feel any remorse for what you've done I hope you will
return to Amiga Format the prize money you were awarded and publicly
apologise for deceiving so many people.

I have kept a record of all evidence gathered. Anybody who wants to
see any part of it for themselves, email me off list. I may well post
it to my web site at some point. I'm sure of my facts and am willing
to defend them or be quoted on any point I have made. Some have felt
the need to remain anonymous when accusing him. I do not.

*Munchkin I name thee and Damned thou art.* >:(

Thank you for your time.

There's a Putty WHDLoad installer on AFCD33. It can probably also be
found on Aminet and at the WHDLoad web site. Sorry, I don't have a
path or URL for either.

I don't know if it works with the Silly Putty budget release. WHDLoad
installs are usually only for a single version, but some handle
multiple versions.

A Hypercom or Portplus doesn't have a cable, it plugs directly into the
clock
port - so you need some kind of cable to plug both in at once.

Its great that 44% is knocked off the price of the subscription, but
how about trying to get some freebies back, like a free game, or a

So I can plug a Hypercom and Powerflyer in at the same time... The
Powerflyer
covers the clock port so you can't plug em both in at the same time,
which
is why I need this cable so I can extend the clock port. If you look on
the
Power Computing page there is a gif with a Powerflyer and a Portplus
plugged
in at the same time, with the Portplus up underneath the serial port.

What an utterly fantastic line!

Aha! Theres the difference between me and Murfin. OK, so I ripped off RWE's
screen magnifier, but I didn't get PAID for it. I'm not condoning MY actions
either, but i only did it to one program, didn't win any money from it, and
admitted it to the public (albeit because of the GazzaGate affair ;)

Who knows, maybe it's something to do with the name, Gareth ;)

Funnily enough I've recently done exactly the opposite. For a while I
was reading "on the web" and was happy enough until the phone bills

I don't work for Future but I'd imagine a 44% discount makes the margins very
tight indeed.

It'd be more than rare for a company discounting so hugely on the price to
want to or need to add any additional incentive by way of a free game it's
usually one or the other simply because of the costs involved.

As for vouchers I'm sure they could do this from time to time in the mag but I
can't see why they'd restrict them to subscribers only.

Honnest, I did not try streaming MP3 until 5 mins ago. Here it seems to work, but that is what it does: it works. Its not nice yet (have to fool around with the settings) but it is recognizable. I tried this with IBrowse1.22 and StreamMP3 version 2.3. Note that I am using a modest 68040 at 25MHz and a 56k modem running at 38k4. So where the problem lays I am not sure.

I read in T3 that researchers at the Bayer Institute have developed a new
polymer which can be used to make CD sized disks that can hold 1 Terabyte
and which can stream data at 1GB/sec - 100 times faster than a DVD-ROM
drive! A full prototype is rumored to be ready in 2004. Will DVD have a

Your spot on my friend, the evidence is conclusive.
It`s not like he can go off writing these programs now/properly,
because differences in compiled EXE size and binary
would be apparent.

Making him the most low-life piece of shit in the Amiga Community.
I`m sorry, but it`s true...

How many developers' on this list can say they have never used
someone else work in small or whole part? Can say they never
hex-edited an executable putting their name in it back when they
started to work with computers/started developing? I know I cant...

We all do it(i`m sure) the difference being that, he has done it
numerous times and released the software... And the worse bit
is he tries to fob it off as his own software, and he`s always
conniving about the way he does it.

> To think he has been paid for the work of others is sickening. There's

I agree,.. I would still like to know how gloom3 came about.. it`s
farily identical to GloomDeluxe, and I wouldn`t be supprised if the EXE
from Gloom Deluxe and Gloom3 are the same.

I wonder if he scored some kind of deal with Guildhall? They were
always out to milk the Amiga for what they could get, and it`s common
knowledge that they dont like the Amiga/Amiga Market.
They added the BlitzSupportSuite to the Ultimate BlitzCD without
the consent of /Red When Exited/, claiming that they own the rights
to Blitz, when BSS was a major update and rights to Blitz held by
Simon Armstrong were sold/given to Steve Matty(RWE) at the time
(if I`m not mistaken). RWE not having the money to take them to
court couldn`t do anything. And ultimatly left the amiga scene.

I`m sure something very fishy went on there?
With regards to Gloom3 and Zombie Massacare...
I mean, from the screen shots I`ve seen they look the same
just with different levels.

Even AF said that the FMV`s in Zombie were just a geordie
running around a back-garden ;) LOL!

Fine. I'll bow to your judgement on this one. If you reckon it'll do
some good, I'll go with that.

Hi Everybody,

Hello :),

[Snip]

>Ok, he's not as bad as people who go round cracking shareware/commercial
programs, but stealing freeware/pd programs >is still something you /just do
not do./ I myself would be very annoyed if someone hacked one of my programs
to blab >about being written by someone else, so I do feel sympathy for the
author of the programs he's edited....

I dissagree! This is worse than common piracy! The Pirates don`t claim
they have written the software... All they do is steal it, And pass it
around a bit. That`s it, there is no "I wrote this software" type bull
shit!

>> How many developers' on this list can say they have never used
>> someone else work in small or whole part?

> Well, when I started programming I didn't have anyone elses code to

track to be able to >credit everyone, but something like that is excusable
isn't it, as I've probably helped them with their code as ?...
>
> What would be inexcusable would be to simply recompile someone's program
with different gfx and then make it seem >that it was entirly written by
you....

This is our point! He hasen`t just recompiled the code for a lot of the
software he has claimed to have written, He has HEX edited executable files
and replaced the original authors details with his own!

>> Can say they never
>> hex-edited an executable putting their name in it back when they

> Me? I've never done that. I've hex read programs to look for cheats :)
but I've only had a hex editor for a rather a short >time, I've never used
it on a program. Given the chance I probably would've, but I wouldn't then
go on to release it as my >own!

You and me both! I would not condone plagiarism if my life depended on it!
What he has done is criminal! Not only has he ripped off PD/Shareware
authors, He has ripped off Commodore commands too! This is theft from a
commercial company and I hope that Amiga prosecute him for that theft!

>>> Some have felt the need to remain anonymous when accusing him. I do not.

Hmmmmmm, I would still like to hear Gareths side of the argument though! I
know this may sound cruel... But I would like to see him suffer as the
chance of seeing him going to court for his crimes is very slim!

>> But after seeing it all from "under the microscope"...
>> There is no doubt in my mind thats he`s a plagiarist scum!

hmmmm, Not the word that I would have used! I`d have been banned from AFB
for saying what I was going to :).

Yeah! Take care mate ;).

Actually I HOPE it will do some good, but you never know :)
Watch out for my ultimate "Did Petro embarrass us?" report shortly after
the show on this very list (if I have the time to watch it)
In any case it is a big plus point that this is a German speaking show.
TBH I have never heard Petro speaking English, but judging by the
comments on this list, well, his "enthusiasm" for the Amiga platform
seems to get out of control when he starts speaking English...

Erm, I wouldn't call this an /exact/ translation, it's just that there is
no way you could translate this to German AND get a catchy slogan as
well. I didn't even think the English phrase made a good slogan, I guess
I just became used to it.

Well here comes the surprise: according to SnoopDOS no MPEGA.CFG is found while executing MPEGA. So maybe renaming your MPEGA.CFG file to something un-recognizable could do a bit of the trick. Also the script it self is completely standard. I am able to mail you this version of the script but I'll do that off-list.

While we're trying to solve the problem, could give some more details on the error you encounter (GURU, ERROR CODE, when does it go wrong....)? As this might be boring to the other list-members its okay to react off-list.

At first I thought it was to protect the cd case, but unfortunately it
doesn't help too much, my cd cases rarely are intact when I get them :(
On the other hand I always thought the cd case is quite a luxury, here
in Germany magazine cds are always stuck to the cover (well IN the
cover, the front cover consists of two pages that are glued together to
form a cd bag) In fact I think you would be shot here if you would use a
plastic bag and a piece of cardboard just to send a magazine :)

The answer is, you can magically transform it into a MantaSoft Screen Div=

oad up a copy of JamesBond (Http://members.tripod.com/~mantasoft/) and se=
