Thanks for the invite, but I rarely have the time to go far to user group

They do on my copy of PPaint 7.1b. Hold on - wait - you have to
BUY the FULL version of PPaint to save as GIF.

(prerecorded) and a CD=2E  :)  It comes down to the quality of equipment
you use=2E  If you use a =A3400 "hi-fi" with -=20
more-flashing-lights-than-Blackpool-Illuminations from Dixons, you'll
find it virtually impossible to tell them apart=2E  But, if you have a
decent separates system - power/pre amp, separate CD transport/DAC,

I wasn't blaming Executive. It's just that I had this problem, and
changing DiskSafe's priority solved it. Maybe something else on my
system aggravated the problem, not sure.

The problem was that the disk wasn't doing anything, not being
accessed at all. I left it for 20 minutes once and nothing happened.

Yes, probably. I suggested 4 because that way it gets as much
processor time as possible and can sort out the hard drive as fast
as possible. It may get a high priority anyway if left alone, but
scheduling it causes problems on my machine.

So "LEAVE ALONE" should do the trick as well, yes.

According to IWin, all of the emulation is done through hardware.
So memory addresses for the AGA chipset are mapping in from these
new chips and do things in different ways, translating the data
into proper VGA stylee graphics on this graphics card, through
the iDDK kernel thingummy.

It's WAYYY too far out for me though, I'm sticking here with
my A1200, it's proven AGA chipset and hopes for the BoXeR (which
will be a proper Amiga :)

Hi,

Can someone, who's tried a few newsreaders, recommend one?

I've been sort of pleased with Thor, despite some funny bugs, but it has
a nasty problem of not being able to retreive a message if you lose
connection temporarily, where others can (i.e. they can still download
message 22323 from your previously downloaded list of headers,
providing it's still on the server, even if you got interrupted).

Newsrog seemed a huge memory hog for the GUI, and had so much text
jammed into the GUI you needed an unreadable midget font to fit it all
in.

Having struck this problem myself (with other companies), I have to say:
Why the heck advertise on the internet, and have an e-mail address, if
they don't use it?  It's like having a phone at a business, and then
refusing to use it.

Businesses are appalling at using the net.  Contact information buried
obscurely in a site, or only via a form that won't work unless you have
the exact same browser they tested it with, likewise with the whole
site not working for the same reason.

We're really stuck for Amiga supporting companies where I am.  The only
one I've found, doesn't understand even vaguely technical questions
when you talk to them on the phone, doesn't answer you queries about
their products, sells products that won't work without a lot of
support, and then doesn't support them, doesn't answer faxes, ignores
e-mail, sends purchased products without original packaging, or any
manuals.....

We get told to buy from Amiga businesses, and pay through the nose for
it, rather than an IBuM shop, because of the extra service you receive.
 Well we don't.  We're continually left at the mercy of trying to do it
all ourselves, or advised to "download" something from the net.

  Have you got a Graphics card?  That'll be your best speedup.  Otherwise
I can only really suggest that you turn all the "looks" into the most
basic ones.  Almost as if it were Gadtools.

  Oh yeah, all the usual WB tricks apply.  Avoid the DBLPal/NTSC modes
get try out the CPU/Blitter patches.

  Erm, that wasn't much help, was it!

All I can say to that is that if you had sorted out domain
name registration deals by now, you'd have ME as a Wirenet
customer. I'd rather go with you than full-on U-Net because
I really don't want to go through the "no, not the Zip drive
people" routine and then end up asking for you anyway :)

I had this neat idea that I could put a prime number generator
in my nothing() function so that if people clicked on the link
when it was actually dead, it did something useful. Generating
the page by CGI and incrementing a counter, I could do a SETI
style prime number search without people knowing :)

Hi,
   I'm, at present, running on a 68030/40Mhz w/ 16Mb RAM. I recently
installed Quake on my hard drive and booted it up, and was absolutely amazed
with the 1fps I managed to obtain! I was reallly surprised that it would run
THAT fast ;)

The question is, I'm now upgrading to a 68060/50Mhz (arriving shortly) After
removing Quake from my HD (you think I'm wasting 80Mb for 1fps? :) I've
decided to try it again, but with the impending '060. What frame rate can I
realistically expect (without a graphics card, and at a playable screen
size/resolution) and is it worth installing it all over again?

Also, is it worth putting 32Mb RAM into this 68060, or shall I just leave it
at 16Mb (it only has 1 SIMM socket AFAIK, and I'm using 2x8Mb on my 030
card. Anyone wanna swap two 8's for a 16?)

I've noticed that my other question about CD emulation hasn't even been
touched upon, so I'm not really expecting this to ;)

The Scan ones are actually Dynalink cards. Dynalink seem to be related to
Dynamode in some sort of fashion (their modems look identical other than
the cases being in a different style), and Active used to sell Dynamode
modems. It might be worth getting in touch with them.

Get the beta from http://v3.vapor.com (i think) V had a problem with the

SSL is SSL, you don't need anything else. Last time I used hotmail they were
doing alot of changes, I know loads of PC users who have gone to yahoo mail

One of the most relaxing channels I know of is the ARCNET chanell. All info about this channel can be found at this site:

YS did a feature about emulation before they closed.  IIRC they said
something about sampling the sound.  I'll give it a read.

I didn't watch it, but I did see one when I went to Bletchly Park a year ago
(or so).  They had a program written in what looked like Amiga Boisic (sic)
to simulate the Enigma machines.  I could tell from the orange window title
bar and the chunky WB1.3 pointer.

Is moobunny the one that is (or possibly, used to be) maintained by
John "Squid" Shepard? Or something along those lines. I'm fairly sure
I first heard about it in the Rumor Mill, at any rate. I read that at
university sometimes, never at home because I tend to get too engrossed
and run up large `phone bills.

I'm not really all that fond of IRC, TBH. The only real use for it I
have is the occasional meeting with a few friends on a private
channel. 90% of channels seem to be filled with the usual AOL crowd.

It's Blitz, AFAIK. Not that you can't do good programming in Blitz
(the original Gloom and Skidmarks(?), although they also had a healthy
smattering of asm) just that many people, erm, don't. Even on my 030
most Blitz software crashes just as regularly as AMOS.

I will freely admit my programming is quite poor. The internal
mechanics are okay, but accessing the Amiga's OS with C confuses the

Ego, again. He so desperately wants recognition for doing something
Amiga related. He doesn't seem to be bothered by the quality as long
as he can say he's developed for the Amiga.

Actually, we're superficially quite similar: both about to start
second year of computing degrees, both Amiga users, both programmers
(loosely speaking ;), both Northerners.

Only I haven't glued my Amiga case to the wall at an "artistic"
angle (HAHAHA! What a fool!) or hex edited a system command and
claimed it as my own (revolutionary!) work. Or spent 150 on a crap
watch because it says Amiga on the front.

Maybe this whole thing was a publicity stunt by Murfin. He'll
certainly get a lot more of his software downloaded from Aminet over
the next couple of days...

That may be true for the non-recordable stuff, but there has never been a
convienient and good quality re-recordable media before, tape always had
it, if anything else was made, it never took off

Yeah, but they're only being used for ordering films at the moment; in the
future, the full cable modem service will be rolled out.

There was actually a bit of product info on the Pace website about this,

Hello,

Just read the (projected) specs of the A510. As I understand the specs right than it might just be NOT an PC with a little extra. 

1 - STANDARD PC refers, as I see it, to the DIMENSIONS of        the board, not the components on it.

2 - THE MEMORY COUNT only has to be done after installing        new software. It also looks like a bit of Autoconfig(TM)     and thus is not that strange.

3 - THE POSSIBLE appearance of ZORROIII hints more or less 
    to somekind of Amiga-specific design.

4 - I beleive that IWIN Never said it was an Amiga (even the     pages say Amiga BASED) but that it is/becomes a computer     which is Amiga compatible.

What worries me is that a week ago all information was presented as if the A510 and A1010 where ready for production (claims like "We found two demos which did not work" indicated that something should be running) but now they still seem to be under development. So the projected release date of september 25 could turn out to be a bit too optimistic.

But for now I would say give them (IWIN) a chance to explain their plans to Mr. Vost AND give Mr. Vost a chance to compile a good piece of information on what he has seen at IWIN.

So why not have a transitional period, incorporating 'old' and 'new'
technology. As the older gets used less and less, bring out newer
designs without floppy.

Yes you would. If someone said "can I have a copy of that really

Which agrees with my argument. x86's still exist - too much. And while
they do we need floppies. When they all go and buy superior machines -
which don't need floppy because of Zips etc also included - then you
can scrap the floppies.

That's great for a 10k system file, isn't it? I know I'd rather make a
second copy if the first one didn't work (which is unlikely) than
waste time and money burning a CD.

into misc and download ircu-amiga-2.lzx - fairly easy to set up.

Does anyone know when v4 of the Power Flyer drivers will be released?
Been waiting for a while now <G>..

Another question, has anyone put a HD >4GB on a Power Flyer and used
PFS2 direct scsi? I can't see a way of turning off the automatic
splitting that the Power Flyer seems to do and don't really want to
risk it (till v4 of the drivers come out with that option!).

I've got limited access to the net for the time being but think I have
found
a way to make some of my uploading (through a pc at the library) a bit
easier.
I have shell access on my ISP's server, so can theoretically put a lot
of new
stuff there by uploading an archive file and unpacking it on the server.
(saves both time, hassle with Nutscape and renaming stuff.)
The problem is of course to find a way to pack files on my Amiga in a
format
that can be unpacked on the server. Now I've done some interesting
things
there earlier and know they've got Tar/UnTar installed, so I treid
looking
for Tar for the Amiga. I found a program on an AF CD but it's a bit
short on
documentation and the 'help' i get with "tar --help" is a bit cryptic
so I
need a bit more help or a suggestion for a better program... (Can you
get Lha
for Unix?)

(I just want to transfer data on a line I'm not paying for so I won't 
bother with compression.)

Oh, and please CC your answers to my address - I only have a 'read on
web'
subscription to this list and don't check it so often and may miss it...

I don't think there is and I've just had Steve McKeever on the phone to ask
me to tell you lot to look out for a file called RippSysFiles (or similar)
in your C: directory. It was installed when he put one of the pinball games
on his machine, and he noticed that his machine was running erratically
since he did. He noticed this file in C: so he turned off the execute bit
on it, which helped, but then he tried to delete it and it deleted the
whole partition. Beware...

A strange question this...

What is the plural of Unix?

Once I have got my A3K running with NetBSD (when I get a new mobo - bugger
to battery acid :() I will be running Solaris, FreeBSD and NetBSD on my
network, so my signature will need to change to have multiple Unix listed.

Well it doesn't have to, but I want it to :)

Would it be Unixes, Uni, Unixi, ?, ?

Also, has anyone got NetBSD running on their Mig and if so, is it easy to
setup, blah, blah?

Running 3 different flavours of UNIX. Now that's perverse.

(Since they are all BSD derivatives, I  guess it's really only one flavour.)

I've also seen Unices. The best idea is just not to pluralize it in the
first place. :-b

I installed and tried NetBSD a few years ago. It's not that difficult to do,
but it's more of a pain than Linux to install.

Oooooohoooooooo!  A friend of mine has been clearing out his loft and he
found all his Amiga games, so I'm now the proud owner of Populous, Space
Crusade, Silly Putty, Mig 29 Fulcrum, Walker and ... wait for it ... Crystal
Kingdom Dizzy!  Complete with the receipt for when it was bought (1 for the
first person to gues the date), stickers, poster and collectors cards.  So I
was wondering, does anybody have any of those collector cards?  I'd like to
get the whole set.

until we've heard what he's got to say.  Unfortunately, he doesn't
appear to be saying anything so it's not surprising that some people
are jumping to conclusions.

It's the same for 040 owners as for 060 owners. Oxypatcher will dramatically
speed up FPU software that was written for a 68881 or 68882. However, since
the 040 has been around a lot longer, there is far more software produced
specifically for the 040 which will reduce the benefit achieved by
OxyPatcher.

In theory it should. In practice the difference is only about 5%.

Absolutely. Quake requires an fpu (or a chip with one built-in) to work and
OxyPatcher will help with the speed of the program since it was written for
882 co-processor maths.

Yep - SunOS/Solaris is indeed an SVR4 based system.
Most of the big Unix players are SVR4 based Sun, HP, IBM, etc..

You won't let on what? I didn't know there was such a storage system. You 
aren't suggesting sub-atomic storage are you? I have heard rumours of such a 
system, but I passed it off as hot wind. It would be interesting though, to 
be able to change the atomic make up of an object and in the process store 
information of some sort. That way you could store your 20GB hard disk in a 
house brick. Convenient, safe storage. Marvellous, unless there is a 
shortage of building materials - in which case your HD Backup will be even 
more secure, cunningly concealed with hundreds of similar bricks. :-)

Am I speaking donkey manure? Probably, but I wouldn't be surprised if the 
military had this kind of technology.

A reason could be that you may have a lightsaber with a variable length
blade. Such a device would requre a switch for selecting the different
crystals needed for the various lengths. So we have a button for on, and
three for selecting between three sizes of blade. Maybe.

Again, on the same argument, for less than =A320 (in actual fact
in a production environment they cost nearer =A34 if not less :)
why NOT put one in?

There are ALWAYS uses for floppy drives. I dread to think the
kind of problems you'd have without one. How would you get your
Amiga Classic floppies across? Null modem? No fear! Joe Bloggs
would rather illegally download them off the net.

Plus, as has already been stated, floppies are that little
bit mroe robust than your average bear... err.. Zip disk.
Throw one around and it practically bounced back. Zip disk?
Crash, thud, shudder! One dead disk.

Not to mention marketting. Look at what happened when the
iMac didn't come with a floppy. I know of at least 3 G3 and
iMac users that are running backwards and forwards with
older Macs, copying data to networks and down to the G3s
and iMacs again. It really pisses people off. They're too
standard, to the point of being indispensable.

What if you have to distribute an application that is only
100k via land mail? Burn it to a CD? Holy bejezus no, and
sending Zip disks to people costs =A310 a time. For 100k?
Don't be silly.

The solution: Rick LeFaivre said they'd probably be using the
LS120 drive, which supports all kinds of floppy formats (from
360k single sided to 2.88Mb double sided high density but
unfortunatly not Amiga 1760k disks) and has a capacity of
120Mb as and when and if you need it. Perfect solution.

Now shut your faces.

Active were quoted to have said that NC3 will support
advanced features in MUI4. People took that to be "NC3
comes with MUI4" and/or "MUI4 will be out REAL SOON"

It IS only prerelease2. I suspect there will be a prerelease3
in about a month or so, a "release candidate" not long after

There are some pretty major negotiations ongoing at the moment. I spoke to
Jim Collas on Tuesday and he seemed pretty happy about the way they were
going, and indicated that we can expect a month or two of near total silence
followed by some pretty major news..

Amiga have been saying something along the lines " it is our intent to get
the MCC out for Christmas and we are quietly optimistic that we can succeed".
This is the language used in corporate communications to indicate "expect
minor delays, but don't blame us."

Not necessarily. There's room in this market for more than one mag - in fact
I'd say that having only one mag has seriously depressed the market, and I
expect a second mag to help build confidence and enthusiasm. Ask any UK
dealer and they will tell you that there was a sudden and very noticeable
drop in sales when CU closed. 

I believe that Amiga users are an extraordinarily varied bunch, and one
magazine is not enough to satisfy everyone. Amiga Active will be targeted
slightly differently than Amiga Format, and while I'm sure that there will be
a large overlap of readers, AA will be able to cater for some of the people
who don't find that AF suits them. 

While a certain amount of friendly rivalry is a good thing as it makes both
parties work harder to be the best, I certainly hope that AA and AF can avoid
the petty and childish back-biting that occasionally reared its head between
CU and AF. Perhaps in a year's time there will be a lot more companies
opening mags and that kind of rivalry might make sense, but at the moment the
market doesn't need it; it serves no-one. As I have indicated to Ben, it
isn't the intention of anyone at AA to tread on AF's toes, and we'd be more
than happy to see a certain amount of co-operation between the two mags for
the benefit of the market as a whole.

    Again, sorry for the rather large email. This is the only mail
regarding `evidence' against Gareth Murfin I`m going to post..
Some are just my opinions after research on the subject.
I have no direct personal argument with this guy, but it does concern
me because I`m a programmer and I like my programs to be /safe/
from these sort of people. (As most do). At least a hacker/cracker/
pirate doesn`t proclaim that the software is their own!
I believe this makes our friend Gareth Murfin not only a down-right
hypocrite and criminal, but worse than the common pirate.

    Ok, I`m pretty disgusted at the things Gareth Murfin has done,
Most of which is just down-right plagiarism. And I`ve been looking at
some (Ahem) "evidence" on AFCD26. From what I can see, just by looking
at it, 90% of the software isn`t his own. Yet he must have signed a
ReaderWarrent to say it was. What is worse is the fact he WON!  50
for that load of tosh on the CD which wasn`t his own! (Hello Ben ;))

Anyway, enough of my opinions... 
Lets give Gareth Murfin the benefit of the doubt for a second.
Why not let him /try/ produce evidence that proves that he hasn`t
been ripping off other people`s software and releasing it as his own,
, generally ripping of the Amiga Community & being a conniving

How about the source to Poo Gaz, maybe SetPatch97?

Apart from this, in some of his documents for his programs,
he states that: "I am not a REAL programmer".. And that he is
learning Blitz and ARexx. Then he releases Poo and SetPatch97.
Both of which exactly the same size as the originals, the same
binary (except for his name splashed all over it).. I know for a fact
that the only way this program could have been written in Blitz
would have been with direct ASM. Otherwise the EXE would have been
bigger. The disasembled Poo also does not follow the rigid alignment
of a Blitz executable.

Now I`d just like to go through a few points from his original
reply to that first email..

If you can`t, it`s probably a good idea to go to the PC as you say.

PLAYING INSTRUCTIONS

Nothing to it really:
Use the joystick to rotate the wheel at the bottom of the screen.
Press fire to launch the ball up the screen. If it lands next
to three or more balls of the same colour, then they are all
blitzed! When there are no more balls left, you are moved to the
next level.


HINTS
~~~~~

Any balls that aren't attached to the top of the screen will fall
down after each shot. Try and learn to take advantage of this -
take a little more time to plan a shot, and it is sometimes possible
to remove nearly all the balls at once!

Anyway, I also know that tCPU doesn`t do any sort of calculation
to determine how fast your CPU is.. And is a very badly programmed
"Utility"! After a lot of disassembling of this program (500k ARGH!)
I have found that the section of code that calls the "1..2..3..4..5"
Line uses nothing more than a Vertical Wait! (VWait in Blitz2)
This is called in exactly the same way as blitz perceives it
in a disassembled program with just "VWait 15".. There cant be more
than 10 lines of asmcode between each printed letter.. There is
no instruction-counting done on any of the registers, and it`s
all very `free-flowing'. While I`m not an Expert with Assembly
I can see that this code does not do any form of instruction-
calculation to determine the speed of the computer`s CPU.
I also noticed that there arn`t any hardcoded strings in the program
which hold seconds taken, `murfins'(haha) or anything like that.

I would suggest it`s probably just 1 simple maths calculation
taken from the CPU type with a "If Rnd(100)>95... Give a wrong
result..." to account for his line:
"quite rare, but Ive had reports about it. I suppose you could call  these
 types of results anomalies, which need to be sorted out. tCPU averages out
 all the results so 95% of the time you can be sure you're getting a correct
 reading."

I mean anyone with half a brain can see from 3 miles away that this
program is a complete fake and nothing more than the
devilish craft-work of an (extremely) lame, conniving "Person".

Although I`m not having a dig at Gareth`s "Programming" skills
(oops I just did :))..
If it had been a genuine attempt at benchmarking, (even if it
failed miserably) it would have been exceptable, but as it`s
just him tryng to fool everyone into thinking it`s an actual
genuine cpu-speed test program...........

The pure and simple fact that he`s added a graph of the speeds is
proof enough that it doesn`t do as it says. If you can have a graph,..
what`s the point in the program? (Hummmmmm)...

If you wanted even more proof of this you need only look at the line:

Why do you need to have other people`s test results to improve
the accuracy of a benchmarking utility? If it did as its supposed to
you shouldn`t need other peoples results.
Suggests he`s gathering speeds and adding them to the program.
If you look at the result/ dir with the program you will notice that
the results are fairly identical with the same CPU`s, in a correct
calculation they would never be identical!

07333313 seconds was the time taken when I first ran it, the second
time I ran it, it gave 07333313, and I hit a key in the shell to pause
it!... Smelt fishy, so I disassembled it. If you want to have a look
at the section which calls the so-called "calculation" then send me
a mail and I`ll send it you.

Hello All,

Is there a way to increase the volume of the A4000T's internal audio
mixer? The background music in T-Zero is only half as loud as the sound
effects. I have already set the sfx volume to med, but this way
everytime an animation with music starts between levels, it is too loud
(and I mean too loud, I'm nearly having heart attacks when it starts)

Well it can't be the Escom drive problem because I have a commodore one and
that's what happened to me, its definately one of the startup option which
you have to change though

You got the HTML 4 specification to accompany the using HTML tutorial, and I
have to say, I found it dead good and useful.  Now I was wondering...

Seeing as Amiga browsers are getting JavaScript now, and there was talk of a
JavaScript tutorial (although don't know if anything has come of it) is
there any chance you could get the JavaScript equivalent?  You'll find it at
http://home.netscape.com/eng/mozilla/3.0/handbook/javascript
It's got all the commands, elements and whatnot and I'm sure with more Amiga
users putting JavaScript on their homepages it will be extremely useful to
us all.
