They also produced the internalk SCSI ZIP for Apple remember.

Although I'm sure I saw someones site selling them (OEM packs) of internal

Down my way - Bristol/North Somerset - we say lookielikie - look-ee-like-ee

So look*A*like or look*ie*lik*ie I know what it means, so I don't care :)

The cheapest I can track down are bare drives with no s/w or media.

Would make them somewhere in the region of 100 incl VAT & postage if

I can't actually begin to imagine what a "paddle type rocker switch"
would be, but...

in practice, the wheels are multifunction. For a start, you can press
them, in which case they act just like a middle mouse button.

Normally, if you click them, they enable an autoscroll function, which
means if you move the mouse down, it will start scrolling the window
down at a steady rate. If you move the mouse down a bit further, it
scrolls faster. Same in the other direction.

If you hold the wheel/button down, then the scrolling happens as you
move the mouse (if you see what I mean) rather than autoscrolling.

I presume it's obvious how it works if you actually rotate the wheel...

Although we have lost allot of good developers e.g. Vulcan, softwood
and now digita what has happened has done some good aswell. I have
found that the average amiga user is a nice guy/girl, always willing to
help, you don't have to worry about update your virus checker every day
(most of the time you don't need to for at least a month), developers
spend there time creating quality software instead of competing and
suing each other, most of the most famous people in the amiga platform
are dedicated and normal users who want want best for the machine
instead being money grabbing corporate types. The amiga owners are
clearly defined and make sure the amiga doesn't end up like the PC
where thousands of companies spin out thousands of different machines
and which makes the one you bought last week out of date.

Please don't get me wrong I still don't think that the Bill Gates types
are nice guys, I still hate them after all the didn't do this to the

did they rework the file's layout? I know the new icon.library

Except of course, that the NewIcons system is SO much better than the
original in terms of what you can achieve style-wise.

My answer was "don't care as long as it uses NewIcons", but I don't
even care if it does use NewIcons, technically - I simply meant as long
as they make good use of colours (which the original icon system just
can't do)

The icons are stored internally in the .info file, as in NOT tooltypes,
With a (slightly) better compression method I'm told. There is a new
icon editor that will convert Newicons to New Icons :) on the fly,
and I think the installer will convert them for you anyway, but if you
DON'T convert them, the new icon.library will load them anyway without
any naff patches. Also totally compatible with original system, will
work fine with DOpus etc. I'm told..

I can't say I particularly hate the Bill Gates mob. I don't have any
feelings for them really, as I've no interest in owning a PC full
stop. I'm one of those 'lucky' people who doesn't have to use PC's at
work and, as such, find my present set up perfectly adequate for what
I need. The only reason I'll be buying a NGAmiga when it comes out is
to 'hopefully' play some kick ass games and 'hopefully' get more out
of the internet. (Then again, Voyager=B3 is nearly out and that's got a
shockwave plugin - working albeit a bit crudely but, hey, it's a
start) Personally, I love watching the PC brigade charging ahead
trying to come up with ever more overblown bits of software that need
better hardware to run it - and then getting something similar on the
Amiga a year or so later. Every time my Pentium owning brother tells
me "your Amiga can't do this", I usually reply with "not yet it can't"

He hates that :)

Cheers,

Eddie

Can anyone give a pretty complete list of the "standards" on other
platforms which are not yet implemented on Amiga?

I can ATM think of:

RealMedia
Microsoft Office
Java
DVD
Those Windows media formats (?)
Speech recognition (?)

As you say, there`s good stuff hopefully coming.

Are implemented. Well, the old 14.4 and 28.8 RA formats are.

> Microsoft Office

VERY difficult, Office docs are actually complex COM constructs
and the Amiga doesn't have a standardised COM interface yet.

People moan that you can't read Office documents on other
platforms. But the reason they can't is because Microsoft have
tied it to COM, which is funnily enough included in Windows
and neglected (installed but rarely used) by anything else.

> Java

Coming soon..

> DVD

Also coming soon..

> Those Windows media formats (?)

Don't need them.

> Speech recognition (?)

Would need a standardised way of audio data
aquisition. We need a REAL RTA SOLUTION!

OS4.0 anyone? Come on, I'm starting a campaign :)

Agreed. Maybe I just don't scare easy, I dunno.

> the more fantasy-orientated books (Talisman with Peter Straub and
> the Dark Tower series) are amongst his best.

I haven't read those, because the horror is so unspectacular. In
fantasy I prefer J. V. Jones and Robin Hobb. Melanie Rawn's Exiles
trilogy is good, but I never found the courage to buy her older stuff
due to the exceptionally dodgy air brushed covers with naked women on.

Ah, I don't know. First I'm judging books by their length, now the
cover. Wherever will it end? ;)

Stan Nicholls is good too. David Eddings bores me, and his writing
comes across as unbearably smug considering all the grammatical errors
he makes. And the continual repetition of unfunny jokes (I know, I
know: "look who's talking").

The problem is Jones, Hobb and Rawn won't finish the next part in each
of their current trilogies until the end of next year, so I find
myself reading all sorts of stuff these days. Y'know, classics and
stuff. ;)

> What about 'Nightmares and Dreamscapes', 'Skeleton Crew' or any of
> the other short-story/novella (hate that word) collections ;)

/Nightmares and Dreamscapes/ was good. I think he should stick to short
stories, he does it /sooo/ much better than novels. Although none of
them were what I'd call scary, some succeeded in being creepy.

The first story in /N&D/ where that guy plans to murder a man by
burying him alive in his car was quite Edgar Allan Poe-ish (Edgar
Allan Poe-tic?). The conclusion as he starts to shovel the earth in
was particularly reminiscent of /The Cask of Amontillado/.

For the love of God, Montresor, indeed. He spoilt the effect a bit by
giving us a perfectly reasonable motive for the killing and then
carrying on after the murder. A good effort otherwise, I'll give him a
B+ for that one.

Tell 'Matthew' to get TimeSwipe from the Aminet. That won't crash

Or use Atomic with Miami or Genesis (on Aminet) which synchs your

Marc Albrecht was - for want of a better word - a cnut.
Mardy git, he ditched the Amiga because nobody would buy
his niche-market products. Clearly they don't have the
word niche in the German vocabulary :)

ARTAS was never going to be REAL RTA anyway. You'd
have to replace audio.device for that, and AHI isn't
up to it.

>
> CU did an article on "OS 4.0" ages ago. Some of the stuff is actually

Yeah, I have it. OS4.0 was supposed to be the mid-level between
OS3.0 and OS5.0, when there was a real upgrade path. It wasn't
always NG Amiga and QNX and Linux - they were just going to
upgrade the hardware and revamp the OS for PPC - "do an Apple"

I would like an OS4.0 anyway. 3.5 is too limited by it's not-ROM-based
quirks, and you have to remember that not everyone actually WANTS a
new computer system when their A1200 (with PPC card of course) or
whatever can do what they want. Not EVERBODY wants AmigaObjects, however
cool they are. That, my friend, is me :)

> A floppy drive won't bump up the price much at all. And I refuse to

> want a floppy /sometime/, and they're not going to have one just

So you make up another figure? Time for a poll, methinks.

I personally have used my floppy drive exactly twice in the last year.
both were in the last fortnight: firstly the Archos install disk which
I DMSed for someone and secondly for the Digital Illusions' pinball
games. Neither of these applications would be necessary on an MCC.

If the floppy drive is an external option then people who want it can
have it. If it's internal it's there adding to the cost (not much, but
adding nevertheless), drawing power, spoiling the gleaming facade and
increasing the boot time (again, not much but increasing) whether you
use it or not. It's a dead medium anyway; there's not much you can do
with 1.44 MB of storage.

There is a place for a modern day equivalent to floppies, a FloppyNG
if you will, but that place is already filled by Zip. Before you say
you haven't got and don't want a Zip drive, they only cost 150 (or
less if you shop around) for a 250 MB drive. There'll be a USB version
of the 250 out RSN that you'll be able to plug into any machine you
want, so it doesn't /matter/ if your mates/business/school/whoever
doesn't have one.

150 is peanuts for the convenience it offers.

I recently had to return a hard drive to Power. The first and second

same day I sent it. I sent off the drive and got a new one 3 days
later. I've had no problems since.

Now, Power were legally obliged to replace it since it was still under
warranty. They were not obliged to respond so promptly, or send the
new drive by next day delivery. It's rare in the extreme to find
service that good from a computer supplier, I speak from bitter
experience.

I've been using Power for years and never had a problem they could
reasonably be blamed for. So leave off `em. Considering all the
non-standard peripherals and bizarre board revisions Amiga users, erm,
use, it's a wonder they manage the level of compatibility they do.

If there was one word that I'd never have used to describe AP, it would
have been laddish. Swearing was never used as a stand-in for humour, and
describing anything written by Jonathan Nash using the same adjective as
you'd use for any of the current crop of "Men's magazines" is so blatantly
wrong it's physically painful. And given the way they continuously
insulted the most cretinous of their readers ("Don't phone us and ask for
cheats or we'll machinegun your fish pond with helicopter gunships")
hardly fits in with being "All things to all laddish idiots".

Are you sure you're not thinking of The One (fixated with the word "Arse")
or Amiga Action (Just plain dire, to the extent that the last few issues
mainly consisted of the writers complaining about the publishers and how
dire the magazine was)? I'd still see AP as being one of the most witty,
clever and generally well-written publications ever.

Surely you lie! Amiga Power was great and for a games magazine I think
that "Games games games, occasional bit of swearing, games, games." is
perfectly acceptable. There is only one thing in that sentance that
you could possibly dissagree with. It had more character, and indeed
characters, than any other mag that I've read.

I don't know about the pirate hanger ons that you mention, but in one

was voted as one of people's favourites. Yet it barely touched the charts.

Oh, hang on. I see what you mean :)

Don't cry out - get Quake, it's better - as I didn't like it that much on

I have an A4K with an 040/25, 16mb RAM and a Picasso IV.

My question is - which is the best version of DOOM taking into account that
I want good speed, sound, mouse control but don't care about the networking
side.

Thanks

8/9/99 Let's gauge the general feel amongst you lot! What will happen to the new Amiga once released and in the immediate future after its release?
----

Please select one of the following:

o It's gonna flop big time! The PC has won it, Microsoft and the like are too big!
o It could get a foot hold in the market, but I don't see Amiga getting anywhere
o Perhaps a shakey start, but it'll never be the way it was.
o It'll be there amongst other computers, but it won't quite reach the heights of the last Amigas
o It may get to the last amount of market dominance, but it might not last
o Its back and its gonna be influencial
o Its back and its gonna be big
o It's back and its gonna take over!!!!!

Dabs and Tech Direct do them for 81 plus delivery :( or :)

Hi Tom,

> Aaagghhh! It's look*A*like. Not lookielike. Lookielike doesn't mean
> anything. It's a contraction of look and alike. Because it's used when
> two people look... alike. So stop it. Now.

I originally wrote "lookielikie" because it's the term used by French &

Your explanation is right, but not that it works under DOpus (at least
not at the moment). Opus has to be updated to support the new
icon.library. Opus does continue to work and displays them in 4 colours
(or so I think, maybe 8?). The "New" Icons will display with four (or
eight :) colours under older OS versions, and in full colour under OS3.5
(maybe that's what you've meant with compatible :)

Hi Chris,

> Having followed this thread (and all other ones like always :) I did
> wonder - is it possible to get E-groups to mention the need to add the
> date when someone is creating a poll? Or even add the date automatically
> to every poll? Either possibility would make creating polls easier for all
> - especially newcomers who may not have read mails on the subject - and
> (virtually) negate the need to remind people every time a new poll is
> created.

I've even sent them some HTML to have more speedy polls (faster to
download), and including the date and not repeating info, like the topic.

Does it? I have loads of other icon utils that will load newicons
fine - because the newicons patch intercepts icon.library loading
code and converts newicons into real, 256 colour standard icons.

As I understand it (unless DOPus is doing something screwy - which
I have no doubts about :) DOpus should just read them as nice
colourful icons as normal, right?

Well that's what I was **told**.. anyway..

Hi JorisW@dma.be,

> The reason I bring this up: How do the 3.5 icons work? Are they
> completely the same as NewIcons (images encoded in the ToolTypes), or
> did they rework the file's layout? I know the new icon.library
> *supports* the NewIcons way of doing things, but is there a *new* way?

The new way *is* compatible with NewIcons, but is a new standard. It will
display NewIcons, but NewIcons can't display the new icon format...

I have just dug my copy of XTR out again 80) and reinstalled it. I
was mad on this game at the end of last year , now I remember why!
Does anybody know of any really good addon tracks Deathmatch or
single player (even both) and sound modules? I used to have some
extra modules but I cannot remember whether that was on a patch that
made the game easier or not (I am trying not to use that patch this
time).
Also last time I played the game, I tried a few addons from
amagazine cd, but they never seemed to work. Has anybody else had
difficulty using addons?

Hope that all made sense

Hello Neil Bullock,
your comments on [afb] Re: Buffered Serial Ports have got me thinking

>> I don't know but I've always found Active very helpful and straight.

>Are we talking about the Active with Chris Wiles in it? He was a tad vicious
>towards me a while back when I ommited Active from a poll I was doing on my
>website to find out people's favourite Amiga company. There was just ten
>companies you could choose from which I'd though of off the top of my head,
>and a box where you could enter a company of your own choosing! He sent me an
>email along the lines of:

> "Why have you left Active out! We have been serving the community longer
>than
> most of those in your list! You obviously don't know what you're talking
>about"

>blah, blah. (not those exact words, btw). I sent him an email saying I'd put
>Active in the list, which I did and got the reply saying "No! Sod you, don't
>bother!" (or words to that effect).

Well, I've dealt with Active on a couple of occasions. I bought my modem and
Netconnect package off them. They didn't have Netconnect 2 in stock so they sent
me Netconnect 1 with the promise to send version 2 as soon as possible. Within a
couple of week it arrived. They have always been very friendly over the phone
and on one occasion when I was having problems I received an E mail from Chris
10 minutes with the solution.

I always speak as I find and Active have always been OK with me.

I think there *are* specific programs which allow you to speak rather than use

> > Always felt a little bit fanziney to me (not necessarily in a
> > bad way). And I could never take it seriously after the Masterclass
> > bit (by that bloke with all the hair, Tony Dillon?) that said the
> > only way to remove the Trashcan from a disk was to reformat.
> Errm.. but that's true. Sure, you can just do a "Delete Trashcan#? FORCE"
> and get rid of it, but it confuses the OS something rotten.. which he
> rightly said.

Eeeh. Is this real? Seems a bit odd that people don't know that you can just
use Swazinfo to turn the icon of the trashcan into a drawer and delete the
drawer!

> Most users WON'T use a floppy drive, but it won't be a floppy
> drive according to Jim C. and Rick LeF. - more an LS120 drive
> which has much more potential.

Ok, I've been reading and pondering before I throw myself into this one, and
originally, I was with the people who were FOR floppy drives. I'm not now,
after thinking about how much I use them myself. Fine, I occasionally play
disk games (but that's only when my hard disk isn't working or I don't have my
Amiga - like at the moment :) But the last time I saved anything on to disk
was at the end of April, when I had lots of files which I didn't want to send
to College by email because of the phone bill, so I put them on disk. Disk
drives are great for saving the odd file on to for transferring to another
machine, but due to the inefficiency of a lot of file formats today, it's not
too often you can fit much on a disk. If you want a floppy drive, they go out
and buy one, that's what I say :)

Neil - who's decided to post more often now I've got less to do.

What are you on about, Neil Bothwick?

> > A floppy drive won't bump up the price much at all=2E
>=20
> *Everything* bumps the price up, and several times by the time the
> distributors, shipper and dealers have added their markup=2E If it is so
> cheap, surely you won't object to paying the slight extra when you order
> your machine=2E

No, I won't=2E But if I pay the extra when I order, as you say, then it
is effectively coming with a built in floppy drive, right? (which is
what I wanted)=2E
=20
> The MCC isn't aimed at traditional computer users=2E Yes, the 90%
> figure was made up, but I'm pretty sure it's about right=2E

We'll have to agree to differ on percentage points, then=2E

> > Monitors don't vary that much
=20
> Size , resolution, scan rates and various features=2E Whereas printers
> vary on size, resolution etc=2E

When someone buys a computer (I'm talking about 'normal' PCs here)
they don't usually go into all that detail for a monitor=2E They buy one
that looks a nice size for what they want with pretty controls and
that's about it=2E That's one of the few advantages PC owners have -
they don't really worry about scan rates etc - if the plug fits, it'll
probably work=2E Just choose VGA or SVGA=2E

> >> CD and tape are rather different=2E One is read only the other is
> >> read/write=2E
=20
> > That's why I said minidiscs as well=2E

> >> Try buying records on the old read-only medium (vinyl) now=2E
>=20
> > Not that hard around here!
>=20
> For current releases?

Yep! (well, sort of anyway)=2E DJ's are always using vinyl - my brother
has a ridiculously huge collection of new stuff for his decks=2E

> Whereas just about everyone you know already has CD and tape?

Yes=2E Everyone still has tapes=2E (nearly) every hifi comes with a tape
deck (or 2)=2E Tapes aren't going to die as soon as most people have
minidisc recorders=2E And floppies aren't going to die because this new
machine has a zip drive/email/whatever=2E
Besides - we're talking about one machine here=2E The floppy won't die
out until nearly all machines turn this way=2E There are still a hell of
a lot of PCs out there with floppy drives in use but no 'modern'
equivalents=2E

> Which is why you can still buy them=2E But the general consumer audio
> systems sold in Dixons et al rarely have turntables these days=2E

Depends what range you're looking in=2E I bought a hifi for =A3150 and
specifically /wanted/ a turntable for my old vinyls=2E I had plenty of
choice (not Dixons, but Currys [same I know], Comet etc)

> They are extinct technology as far as that market is concerned=2E

Nah=2E Depends who you are=2E

> The analogy is slightly flawed anyway, since audio material has a
> longer useful life than computer programs=2E I still listen to music
> from the 70s

Same here, and I wasn't even born until 1980!

> but I don't play ZX81 games anymore=2E

I play my Amstrad CPC (1985) games on a regular basis=2E There is a
thread here about good old classic games=2E They aren't defunct just
because they are less popular - you still need them=2E If my A1200 could
emulate a CPC properly I'd love to put the original disks/tapes in and
play=2E If the A1200 didn't have a floppy drive - aaarggh!
Similarly, if people could play their old 1 disk Amiga games on a next
gen machine I'm sure many would=2E They couldn't with no floppy drive=2E

> > Anyway, were discussing equipment being superceded
> > here=2E The MCC doesn't have any alternative to the floppy
=20
> Floppy, Zip, Orb, anything else with a USB interface=2E The MCC should
> be able to handle them all=2E=20

I worded it a bit wrong - "the MCC doesn't have any alternative to the
floppy"=2E=2E=2E"which is readily available on the majority of machines"=2E
How many people in schools/offices have access to Zip drives, Orb
things (never even heard of them)?
There's no point in being revolutionary if it won't work with anything
else=2E

> Leave it to the user's choice, that's the Amiga way=2E

That's just being an Amiga sentimentalist - "the Amiga way" ain't
always "the right way" if you're honest=2E

What are you on about, Alex Furmanski?

> > A floppy drive won't bump up the price much at all. And I refuse to
> > believe that 90% figure you made up. I reckon 99.9% of users will want
> > a floppy /sometime/,

> I'm with Neil on this one. Maybe 99.9% of user will want a floppy /once/,
> use it, think it's slow, break a disk and then use it as a frisbee. They'll
> find how much fun that is and continue to buy floppy disks just to use as
> frisbees, thus lulling people into thinking floppy disk is a popular medium
> and we'll be stuck with them forever.

:) Can't argue with that, can I.
So how do we explain the popularity of frisbees? Are they really being
used as plates?

Hi,

If anyone is using Petri Nordlund's Executive with DiskSafe, here's a
little tip.

Set the scheduler to NOSCHEDULE for the DiskSafe task and set the
priority for that to 4. If you have it scheduled, because it never
does anything it's priority drops right down to the bottom when
sheduled. Under certain circumstances it becomes impossible to reboot
the computer because DiskSafe is blocking the process whilst data is
written to disk, but DiskSafe can't get the processor time to finish
it's job and let the reboot go ahead. It usually happens when a
processor intensive task has hung but is still hogging the cycles.

It's been confusing me for weeks, that has.

> I might add.

If you have proof of this you should go to the police. Personal
threats are a serious matter and can be prosecuted. Any prospective
libel case from these allegations, on the other hand, would never
reach court.

For various reasons that are outlined below, however, I find myself
doubting that any such `phone call ever took place.

> too.. and hardcoding results into tCPU? heh what a joke.. I'll admit
> it is no
> revolutionary piece of software, but it does actually do tests
> reliant on CPU speed and

I can see how people could be mistaken for believing the results to be
hard coded. I ran this program (the version that was on AFCD26) twice,
once with nothing running, once with ADoom running, YAM doing a search
(thorugh approximately 7 000 emails) and emacs sorting the jargon file
(about 4 MB of text) into alphabetical order. Both tests returned the
same result, despite Petri Nordlund's TOP command reporting that the
CPU power available to tCPU had dropped from 99.80% to 0.12%.

By all means explain how the tests work, but AFAICS tCPU is at best
broken. The results were way out anyway, it reported 17.5 "murfins"
for each test and the average, roughly 4-5 times faster than an 060 by
your reckoning. It's an 030 running at 40 MHz, almost certainly
overclocked. Hardly the Cray Supercomputer described by your program.

Now, this does suggest to me that results are either hard coded or
that your testing method is poor in the extreme. People with all sorts
of set ups also report 17.5 "murfins" including, importantly, various
clock speeds of 030.

In fact, not one of the people who replied about this program (I'm
referring to the emails in the tCPU directory on AFCD26) got the
expected results. One also complained about ShowConfig2 which cannot
recognise an 060 or CGFX, giving an incorrect figure for screen mode
(on my system a PAL High Res Laced screen (167940 decimal or $29004)
is reported as -16380) and also reporting an incorrect amount of
memory.

Hmm... I'll let people draw their own conclusions.

Then there's Theme040. A script that turns the 040 caches on using the
Commodore CPU program. Why? IIRC SetPatch turns everything on except
the Data Burst mode which causes problems with some software. You
haven't exactly stolen anything there, but it's billed as a patch. And
it isn't.

Same goes for the Gloom 3 patch. I'll reproduce it here in full:

        ;
; Gloom 3 "Ultimate Gloom" Startup Script
        ;
; By Gareth "Gaz" Murfin (gazy@globalnet.co.uk)
        ;
        CD Ultimate_Gloom:Gloom_3/
        Ultimate_Gloom:Gloom_3/Gloom2

Also, in the interests of research, I disassembled your "Poo" command
and the Commodore Version command 40.1:

They are exactly the same command hex edited to say POO instead of
VER and your name instead of the original version and date command.
There is no credit given to Commodore anywhere in the documentation.
If anyone wants to see the source code for comparison I'd be happy to
mail it to them. The two files pack very small, since they are so
very, /very/ similar.

Whilst none of this is reason to insult or threaten you, I can see
where people might get the idea that you are a plagiarist and have
difficulty believing anything you say. I'm sure you begin to see why
I have difficulty believing that you were threatened on the telephone.

I can't really comment on the other allegations because I'm not so
bothered about all this that I'm going to go hunting for the programs
you are accused of plagiarising. However, based on the programs I *have*
looked at, a mere 20 minutes research, it doesn't put you in a
particularly flattering light, I'm afraid.

> i'm not going to stoop to their childhood level and reveal who they
> are.. altho I could
> anytime i want. I have their address, phone number and atleast 2
> URLS where they admit
> to being nasty to me over the phone and insulting me.. thats 2
> 'hate' sites and a
> discussion group.. seems like an unhealthy obsession for teenage
> boys doesn't it?..

Give the URLs by all means. Give the lot if you like, if you can prove
/your/ allegations try and do so. If nothing else it will give these
people a chance to either refute them or come clean. I'd like to know
how you got telephone numbers and addresses though, it smacks of
something more going on than either of you have spoken of. Revealing
URLs can't do any harm, they're there to be looked at or they wouldn't
have been written.

I will admit here that I was, unknowingly, on a mailing list dedicated
to you. I was invited to join via an anonymous email, and had no way
of knowing what the list was about as the name was simply "gmh8s". Not
particularly clear what it was all about, was it? The usual
information just mentioned being against software theft, so I replied.
In the 2 weeks or so I was subscribed I received only 2 emails, both
anonymous, both last night. One mentioned that you had attempted to
join the list and the other said the group manager had declined to
approve you. I suspect it was all a bit of fun and there was no real
slander campaign ever undertaken by these people. They certainly
weren't using that list to coordinate their efforts whilst I was
subscribed. In an effort to disassociate myself from any incidents in
which you were personally threatened I unsubscribed from this list
early today.

Speaking for myself, whilst I no longer use any of your software I
have used dwarfx and I bought Gloom3 and Zombie Massacre. None of
these products remains on my hard drive because I could see no use for
dwarfx and, IMHO, the Gloom sequels are inferior to the original and
the other Doom clones I have. This does NOT mean I bear you any
personal malice and I would certainly never threaten anyone with a
beating because I believed they had stolen software, or because I
disliked the contents of a disk with their name on it.

I have said many times on this list that the Amiga is just a computer
and that there is more to life. I'm not the sort of person who would
cause physical harm over a computer.

I would also like to add that I have had nothing to do with any of
these web sites until yesterday, when I read one of them. I am not the
anonymous poster who started this thread.

It is /entirely/ possible that person or persons not subscribed to
that list have been bothering you, but I'm near certain that list was
never used to discuss anything, never mind you. Based on the small
amount of evidence I have gathered I cannot understand why this person
didn't give their name; there does appear to be evidence to support at
least some of their claims.

Matthew Garrett reckons he knows a bit about [afb] Re: Win the New Amiga (backpage Af128), but there's more to it than that.

> > So you use floppies.
>
> Yes, because (as you snipped) the PC architecture is brain-dead enough not
> to support BootP and TFTP without mucking around with boot ROMs. This is a
> function of bad design rather than suggesting that floppies are useful. If
> it was a Sun, an Alpha, an SGI, an HP or (for crying out loud) a Mac, I
> wouldn't need floppies. Ever. I'm assuming that the new Amiga technology
> will be good enough to deal with this.

But what if you want to transfer to PC's with their brain-dead
architecture? A floppy, maybe?

> > And what if you want to take that information somewhere else - on
> > disk?

> Why would I want to? I'd send it over the network, or obtain it
> again somewhere else.

But you can't always. Imagine you get some wonderful info and want to
transfer it to a PC - whadda ya gonna do if it's not networked and
doesn't have the facility to 'obtain it again'?

> Do you want a floppy drive for your video recorder, CD player or
> teletext decoder?

Wha??? There is no way you can transfer info from a video/CD/teletext
to a floppy in a useful way (except a screen grab I suppose). You
/can/ get decent stuff onto a floppy from the MCC.

>> CD and tape are rather different. One is read only the other is
>> read/write. Try buying records on the old read-only medium (vinyl) now.
>> Tape will probably suffer the same fate as minidisc takes off.

> minidisc will never replace CD, simply because the sound qulity isn't as
> good. minidisc will only ever be a tape replacement

Doh! Where did I say that?

I said CD replaced vinyl, minidisc will replace tape.

Paul Cundle said,

> What are you on about, Neil Bothwick?

>> *Everything* bumps the price up, and several times by the time the
>> distributors, shipper and dealers have added their markup. If it is so
>> cheap, surely you won't object to paying the slight extra when you order
>> your machine.

> No, I won't. But if I pay the extra when I order, as you say, then it
> is effectively coming with a built in floppy drive, right? (which is
> what I wanted).

Which is *exactly* what I've been saying all alomg, that it should be
an option, not a standard fitment. I certainly wouldn't was a floppy
drive taking up the space that could be occupied by a far more useful
LS120 drive.

>> The MCC isn't aimed at traditional computer users. Yes, the 90%
>> figure was made up, but I'm pretty sure it's about right.

> We'll have to agree to differ on percentage points, then.

It's an appliance, not a computer. That's how it will be marketed. Why
do you think it looks more like a VCR than a computer?

> When someone buys a computer (I'm talking about 'normal' PCs here)

A completely different scenario to the MCC buyer.

> they don't usually go into all that detail for a monitor. They buy one
> that looks a nice size for what they want with pretty controls and
> that's about it.

Which is a bad mistake. The monitor is a most important choice for a
machine that's used often.

>> Whereas just about everyone you know already has CD and tape?

> Yes. Everyone still has tapes. (nearly) every hifi comes with a tape
> deck (or 2). Tapes aren't going to die as soon as most people have
> minidisc recorders.

See what I said later about the longer life of audio data.

> Besides - we're talking about one machine here. The floppy won't die
> out until nearly all machines turn this way. There are still a hell of
> a lot of PCs out there with floppy drives in use but no 'modern'
> equivalents.

Modern PCs can come with LS120 drives instead of floppies.

> I play my Amstrad CPC (1985) games on a regular basis. There is a
> thread here about good old classic games. They aren't defunct just
> because they are less popular - you still need them. If my A1200 could
> emulate a CPC properly I'd love to put the original disks/tapes in and
> play. If the A1200 didn't have a floppy drive - aaarggh!
> Similarly, if people could play their old 1 disk Amiga games on a next
> gen machine I'm sure many would. They couldn't with no floppy drive.

But the target market won't have old Amiga games because they won't have
old Amigas. You're still thinking that people here are the typical
purchaser of the MCC, we aren't!

>> > Anyway, were discussing equipment being superceded
>> > here. The MCC doesn't have any alternative to the floppy
>
>> Floppy, Zip, Orb, anything else with a USB interface. The MCC should
>> be able to handle them all.

> I worded it a bit wrong - "the MCC doesn't have any alternative to the
> floppy"..."which is readily available on the majority of machines".

Floppy, Zip, LS120.

> How many people in schools/offices have access to Zip drives, Orb
> things (never even heard of them)?

Why do you think I mentioned floppy first. No one is taking away your
choice to have one, why take away others' choice to not have one. It's a
waste of space and money for many people.

>> Leave it to the user's choice, that's the Amiga way.

> That's just being an Amiga sentimentalist - "the Amiga way" ain't
> always "the right way" if you're honest.

No it's not, it's one of the strengths of the Amiga ethos, choice. I'd
like to be able to choose not to buy a pice of outdated technology if I
have no use for it.

Saying that the Amiga way isn't always right isn't the same as saying
the Amiga way is always wrong. You can't decry anything based on
previous methods just because some things didn't work out as intended...
Unless you really feel freedom of choice was a bad decision.

> Rather a tacky blue case than more sodding cream

It's not the colour that's tacky (it's actually quite a nice shade of
blue).

Hi there folks, It's me again and I have some new problems that I'd
appreciate answers to (if possible).

I'm now online with my A1200T (and the Appolo 040 is a hell of a lot
more stable than it was BTW - it doesnt crash 4 times when the computer
is cold anymore!) but I am having trouble with both Hotmail and Egroups
(I'm using my flatmates IMac ATM).

First Egroups. Using the Netconnect 3 package (still with Voyager 2
until they send me the new version) when I try to access Egroups it
says my computer did not return the cookie it sent it. Now both cookie
options in Voyager are set to accept and there is no-where else that
mention cookies. Any ideas on how to solve this?

Secondly, Hotmail. This sends back a window that stays open for about
1/3 a second (I had to grab the title bar with my mouse to hold it
open) saying that it cant secure the SSL channel (or whatever). I've
looked at the list of SSL passes in Voyager and Hotmail isnt on it.
I've tryed a Yahoo search for SSL and Hotmail SSL but come up with
nothing. How can I access Hotmail? Where can I get the pass for it?

Help!!!!

Thankyou all in advance.

Hello Mark

>> Now that it's dead, I suppose I'll need a new one, so does anyone A)
>> have one I can buy off them? or B) know of a cheap monitor, that will work
>> with a 15khz PAL and NTSC scart output, and preferably has dual input, even
>> more preferable one scart, and one comp video input (so I wouldn't have to
>> get a scart splitter) ?
>>
>> Or am I better off trying to get my old one fixed?
>
> Hi Andrew,
>
> It sounds fixable to me, probably something on the line circuit got
> fried (you're getting a picture, it's just sqeezed into a vertical
> column). Why not get a repair estimate first?

a lot of these are going second hand (some with Amiga machines) might be
cheaper to buy second hand if repair bill is to much (remember the guarantee
will only cover the repair done) might pick up a monitor for a good price
(remember these type of monitors are only good for us Amiga people the
majority of times) look in 'LOOT'

                 Cheers all the best

Hmm... I agree. Nice colour, and damned nice piece of equipment too. If only I

Hi Everybody,

> First Egroups. Using the Netconnect 3 package (still with Voyager 2
> until they send me the new version) when I try to access Egroups it
> says my computer did not return the cookie it sent it. Now both cookie=

> options in Voyager are set to accept and there is no-where else that
> mention cookies. Any ideas on how to solve this?

That seems to be a bug in Voyager, I usually get it when trying to get=
into hotmail...

> I've tryed a Yahoo search for SSL and Hotmail SSL but come up with
> nothing. How can I access Hotmail? Where can I get the pass for it?

SSL isn't something you can get, its the way that your browser to reci=
eve and send encrypted data. Voyager should do this automatically, check=
its installed propperly and the settings are right.

BTW. I've tried to use Voyager to get into hotmail, but were greated b=
y a cookey error, much like your egroupes error.

  =

   You now have 3 choices:

1) Wait for voyager 3

2) Get IBrowse (both sites work with my version 1.22)

3) Set up Mac emulation and use either netscape or IE.

See ya.

I think it was written for WarpOS rather than PowerUp. There are no elf

and I have WarpOS plus the PPCLib Emulator installed with very good
results - only three programs fail to work under emulation and rc5 is very
slightly faster!

> nothing. How can I access Hotmail? Where can I get the pass for it?

Again, try with the V preview. (I assume you are trying to get in through
their web site).

> The burning question we are all interested in!

> Are beardy blokes like Ben sexy or is clean

> Please select one of the following:
>
> o Yes. Ben should shave pretty damn soon!
> o No. Ben should keep his beard.
> o That's a beard?
> o I like Ben so much, I just want to get on the next train to Bath
and buy a pint for everyone who has a beard.
> o The state of a man's chin is his own private buisness!
> o Who is Ben anyway?
> o Soory. I just walked past this terminal and found that someone
had left thier browser logged in.
> o Bill is wasting valuable resources by posting frivious polls
like this one. His afb subscription must be roked immeditately!

Oh dear. Looks like this poll will be removed like mine did.

Ben, you need to make the fact that you need a date more obvious!!

I thought that 'The One' was the better of the 3 games mags.
They nearly always had good cover disks.

Roughly. Annoyingly it looks like it's falling through after half the
people involved suddenly found they had to be in Scotland, or something.

> Oh, and seeing as you're the only Mighty Being alive (honorarily), it's

> But what if you want to transfer to PC's with their brain-dead

No, the internet. Quite literally everyone that I might want to transfer
information to is connected to the internet in such a way as to allow me
to do that. This is going to become increasingly widespread in the near
future as cable modems and ADSL take off.

> But you can't always. Imagine you get some wonderful info and want to
> transfer it to a PC - whadda ya gonna do if it's not networked and
> doesn't have the facility to 'obtain it again'?

I don't need to. Quite simply, it's not going to happen. If it's anything
less than a megabyte, emailing it is a hell of a lot easier. If it's more,
I refuse to muck about with splitting it across disks and risking one of
them developing a spontaneous error. Floppies aren't reliable enough,
aren't large enough and are annoyingly difficult. I'd rather burn a CD.

> Wha??? There is no way you can transfer info from a video/CD/teletext
> to a floppy in a useful way (except a screen grab I suppose). You
> /can/ get decent stuff onto a floppy from the MCC.

No, but you could produce one. The MCC is designed to fit into the same
sort of market to a large extent, and forcing a large number of people who
will never need a floppy drive to buy one is stupid. If you need a floppy
drive, you can buy an external one for not a great deal more than the
price would end up being increased for including an internal one.

>>
>
> I wondered when someone would mention Herbert in this thread. I read The
> Rats years ago and have read most of his others since. Definitely my kind
> of horror! The only strange one he ever wrote was 'Fluke', about a dog
> that thinks he's a man that thinks he's a dog... Most peculiar and nothing
> like his other novels, but still somehow worth the read to try and work it
> all out.

And they made a film of theat one. Also The Survivor was a great book but a
crap film. I thought they made a film of The Rats or am I thinking of the
one with Ernie Borgnine from the book 'Willard' with Michael Jackson doing
Ben on the sound track.

> > Now, Does anyone know if EDO simms will work with my 1230LC ?

Unlikely - and I could never get any EDO simms going in mine. The 1240/1260
boards seem quite happy with EDO though :)
