Couldn't you just jazz it up a bit? Make it shiny or summink. Do like
you did with the Start_here! icon - all bumpy and nice, but in a nice
way :)

Well it may be old and dated, but it IS recognisable - there's loads of
ex-amiga users who'd still recognise the mag from days of old, if they ever
come back to the platform (this time next year maybe??)

I like the externals Zips!

I think that the best things about Zip Drives is not that they hold
100+ mb but that they are portable, and you can move them around
physically to other platforms.

In the land of numbers 23 is king

Hi all,

I recently purchased a Yamaha DJX Keyboard (which is rather nice I must 
admit) and would like information on how I can connect it to my Amiga A1200. 
It has General MIDI ports on the rear (MIDI In and Out)
and I would need to connect this to a MIDI interface.

I would like recommendations of suitable MIDI interfaces and if possible 
music packages which would communicate with this keyboard. I own OctaMED 
Soundstudio and it has various MIDI options. Would this be compatable with 
my keyboard assuming I had a MIDI interface?

I would also like to know if I can use the built in sampler with my Amiga, 
through a MIDI interface.

Would that work in an newer EPP port like on the HyperCOM3?

Actually, I`d like to know if it is possible to use the ProGrab
hardware with a new par port, with some kind of redirection patch (The
software is probably hardcoded to use the standard par).

You could theoretically grab anims at 800kb/sec (wonder how many fps?),
which must be faster than that PCMCIA add-on they did.

Another question. Would a fast SCSI bus be good enough to use for
grabbing full frame video?

Don't appologise! I always thought AUI had virtually limitless potential for
improvement, but I was never allowed to do anything other than game reviews
in my days there. CU was never a favourite of mine either, and only started
to come good once I got some say in things and Mat Bettinson turned up. Even
then it was crap in many ways until the hangers on in the staff had stopped
hanging on, and we got Andrew on board. Even then it could have been a lot
better, if we had all been prepared to work 24 hours a day and didn't have
to work with a different freelance designer/layout artist every issue for
the last 8 months.

Inferred from what Mick had told them. When we printed that the BoXeR would

came back two weeks later - well within the time budget for our next issue
- we celebrated... :(

  I remember laughing about that when I first heard them.  It's more
Kermit than Ernie (Isn't Bert the one with the high pitched voice).  The

Yes the hotlist.html file was still there.
The problem has already been answered. It was a shortage of Chip RAM
('cos my hotlist was too big) and the fact that I am using Magic Menu.

BTW Where is iBrowse2 Full Version? Didn't you say it would be ready
last week.....again? :-/

to the prototypers for one reason - Mick had the flu and was unable to
finish wire wrapping the components or some other nonsense. There isn't

Hi, and thanks to all those who responded to my post.

The main problem appears to be the keyboard's unwillingness to recognise
multiple key presses, so I may attempt the connecting of the reset button
on the tower, as suggested by one member. My own experience with Power
Computing has always been very good, I was just wanting product
information. As a result of your replies I have this morning ordered one;
wish me luck for a successful installation.

I recommend you buy one :)  There isn't much to choose between any of them.
I use a ProMIDI interface and I'm happy with it.

Bars&Pipes seems to be the sequencer of choice - if you can find it.

Yes but you really need to know a fair bit about Sysex to get the
best from it.

I don't know but if you can't, samplers for the Amiga are cheap and
there's plenty of sample editing software out there.

   Having bought SleepWalker CD from the WoA (a bargain really, 10 for
that and two other games!) I took it home and tried it on my A1200. Blast,
it doesn't work! 

I've tried the CD emulator that comes with IDEfix-97, and i can't get it
to work. Any ideas?

BTW - The registered version of my proggy, NetDOCK-2 is now on aminet. Get
it and tell me what u think! Its gunna be the last version for a while cos I
lost the source code in a recent HD crash ;(

An internal drive has a chassis to hold all the bits together. If a drive
is designed for internal and external use, the external one may well be an
internal drive with a box round it. But the Zip was an external drive
first, so there is no internal chassis, the case holds the bits together.

The reason the Off Topic afb list is so poorly supported is that people
don`t need to bother to stay on topic in this list, or change the
subject to reflect the message content. It really is a shame cos when I
find the time to check this list I just find myself reading stuff that
is really private chat. I am not really bothering with this list as
it`s usually a waste of time looking for enlightened Amiga comment.
Have most of you been reading the AMIGA RELATED postings on the Amiga
Insight pages? Jim Collas reads them, he posts replies sometimes. I
dont think he is likely to post his favourite lookalike on this list
though! On the other hand maybe he already has and I missed it. It
probably had a subject line of 'HD problems'!
This list is yours, if you want to discuss off topic subjects that is
your choice I guess, but it seems such a waste of an opportunity to
learn and comment on Amiga/Format related issues.

I see - so external Zips are designed to go into the external case and
nothing else.  I suppose this makes them more cost efficient than putting
internal drives in cases?

It has MIDI ports, not General MIDI ports (there's no such thing as General
MIDI ports). Yes, you can connect it to your Amiga with a MIDI interface
plugged into the serial port.

Yes, SoundStudio (and all versions of OctaMED from about v3) will work with
it. However, MIDI is not OctaMED's strongest point, so while it can send and
recieve basic data, like note on, note off, volume etc, it's not too good at
changing MIDI parameters during a sequence (such as filter sweeps). It's
possible, but a bit fiddly. However, there are plug-ins that make these
things much easier, available from
http://www.stud.ifi.uio.no/~kjetilma/nsm/

I'll be covering these plug-ins in issue 131 of AF.

Dedicated MIDI sequencers are better at controlling various parameters of
your synth, but aren't as good at combining Amiga samples and MIDI in the
same songs. Music X 2.0 is a good sequencer that's no overly complex, while
Bars and Pipes is a lot more powerful and probably quite confusing without a
proper manual. Sequencer One Plus is a good starter sequencer, as it's quite
simple. You should also try Camouflage, which is available from Aminet.

You can use any Amiga MIDI interface. If you don't plan to get any more MIDI
equipment, an interface with just one Out connection and one In would be
sufficient. However, if you want to be able add more gear in the future,
it's a good idea to have a MIDI interface with two or three MIDI Out
connections. This allows you to connect other devices without having to
daisy-chain them via the MIDI Thru ports of the devices. Your DJX doesn't
have a MIDI Thru going by what you've said, so you wouldn't be able to
daisy-chain through that keyboard anyway. Daisy-chaining can slow down the
data transmission and lead to different devices running slightly out of time
with one another.

If the DJX supports the "MIDI sample dump" system, then yes. If it supports
this both ways, you would be able to download samples from your keyboard and
also upload them to your keyboard from your Amiga. MIDI sample dumping is a
very slow process, as the data throughput of MIDI is not cut-out for
handling large data files.

You'll need some sample dumping/downloading software running on your Amiga.
There might have been something to do the job among the patch editors on the
CD on the new issue of AF. I'll be covering this topic in issue 130 of AF
(Synth Sudies).

  There is a magic numbers module that can be compiled in.  Something
like mime_magic.o (See the http://www.apache.org/ site).

  For magic numbers the config is via a text file for example you would
tell it that if the first three characters of a file were "GIF" then
it is "image/gif"

  But you are right that just about no one does it this way ;)

There were no internal drives to put in cases. The external Zip
pre-dates the internal versions by a couple of years. They were mainly
intended for use with Macs, hence the SCSI interface, tacky blue case
and monosyllabic documentation.

It will make a difference. Well it did for me, I get at least
1000cps better transfers than before I got my Hypercom. Then
again, I've only got an 030 processor - if you've got more it
will make less of a difference. Probably.

I'm not Ben, but for =A320? If the HyperCOM 3+ has more ports on,
then get it! You'll probably find a use for that extra parallel

   I just got one for my old A2000, it's the bee's knee's.  Get it, I
ordered mine on a Sunday from Actives site, http://www.active-net.co.uk and
there it was, at my door on Tuesday.  My transfer speeds have gone from an
average of 3k upto 5k.  I do also have a Blizzard 2060, PicassoII+ and
SupraExpress 56e PRO.

to the small arrow, just pull your middle up or down to scroll. They do the
same for web pages, listers, whatever. They could zoom the view in a paint

A floppy drive won't bump up the price much at all. And I refuse to
believe that 90% figure you made up. I reckon 99.9% of users will want
a floppy /sometime/, and they're not going to have one just when they
need it (rather like my ink cartridges :( )

I never said don't include a monitor (although I've always coped
perfectly well with a TV ;)) Monitors don't vary that much - most
people aren't going to want a 43" one and apart from the basic
controls there isn't much else to choose from. Although maybe the MCC
should have two options - like biggish and expensive or small and
cheap/poorer quality.

That's why I said minidiscs as well. Anyway, you can get writable CD
players now (but very expensive and mostly irrelevant).

Minidisc has taken off hasn't it? Most of my friends have them or will
get one soon. Tapes still have a long way to go yet. Old mediums don't

Same here as well. I wanted to buy their video backup system but they

You could try using "Tidy" AFCD44:-Serious-/Comms/WWW/
it does a pretty good job of fixing errors and even indents
the code to make it easier to read

I've just installed one (Hypercom 3+) in my 4000. the download rate for E mails jumped from 2
to 3 thousand to over 6,000! All web related thing are faster. I would recommend one

could anyone help with mine?.

when i use the cachebrowser in IBrowse 2 it locks up IBrowse.
Snoopdos indicates that i may (do?) need NListtree.mcc.
but where to look??. Tried Aminet, Amiga Web Directory etc,
can anyone shed some light

A few years back I completed Rainbow Islands and I don`t want to boast
but I can kill Drac on level three which just using the one rainbow
technique.

Anyway when I completed it and it did the usual end sequence. As far as
I can remember all of Bub & Bobs friends appeared on a small little
island with congratulations above them.

After that on the insert coins screen a little heart appeared and then
as it happens that day I completed again and then another heart
appeared next to it.
Does anyone know what the heart is there for??

When the first PowerTower was developed there were no PPC cards available=

PowerC rely on different companies for their deliveries.
They have already made some change in the past whe customers did not
received their products in time.
Everyday at around 6pm the courier come to collect all the goods ready to=

If it is a one off case that is ok. If it happen consistently PowerC can =
get
rid of them and sign a contract with a new one.
At times, PowerC can make a mistake and that is understandable.
I have not yet found a company which is been 100% perfect in dealing with=

customers on the long run.
Problem happens everywere. And when it happens, a company must be judged
according to how they solve the problem and in what time frame.
And that is not just related to the computer industry, but to the food
industry, clothing industry etc.

Things can go wrong. I have dealt with several company myself and i can
assure you none of them (and I say NONE) is been perfect in the *long run=

Hi Andrew,

It sounds fixable to me, probably something on the line circuit got
fried (you're getting a picture, it's just sqeezed into a vertical
column). Why not get a repair estimate first?

Well, the G3 and G4 cards are PPC cards and all the current PPC sw will =
work
with them.  There will be a version of WarpOS for the G3 cards too (at =
least
thats what I heard).  Phase5 has licensed out their non PPC products to =
DCE.
It is true that the BVision and Cybervision won't work  with the new =
cards,
but the new graphics card sounds much better, and if Phase5 5 gets 250
orders they will produce it.

I don't have any other problems. Except being crap at the Law N'

Having followed this thread (and all other ones like always :) I did
wonder - is it possible to get E-groups to mention the need to add the date
when someone is creating a poll? Or even add the date automatically to every
poll? Either possibility would make creating polls easier for all -
especially newcomers who may not have read mails on the subject - and
(virtually) negate the need to remind people every time a new poll is
created.
Just a thought :-)

You have a BT line,and a phone. When you dial a number (with C&W dial 132
first) it is routed through the C&W billing system, When you get the BT
phone bill it doesn't show. Because you are billed by C&W for the call,
normally at a better rate In my opion..

Just saw a review of OS 3.5 on 3.SAT`s satellite Computer Channel. It
showed in detail the new time and or locale settings. The new 4+ Gig
hard drive settings including settings for SCSI built in. Also some
bits of hardware were shown finally ending with the release date for
OS 3.5 being the end of September.

Hi

I just got a 4 way buffered IDE thingy, its the express one, but without the
addon thing, so its just the interface, no speed up. Anyway, I cant manage
to get it to use my CD drive :/, although the cd player will work when its
set to port 2.

1) The CD drive is set to master
2) The drive is connected to port 1, and the HD to port 0
3) IDEfixPrefs is set to auto detect everything, although I have tried
setting all the various options by hand.
4) If I use the find devices util which cme with idefix 97, and select the
atapi.device then it gives me all the info about the drive, serial number,
make etc...

HELP!

I'd have thought it's the other way round.  Surely it's cheaper to
mass-produce one type of drive and then either bung it in a case or not,
rather than having to produce two different drives and /then/ bung one in a
case.

Was that the guy offering loads of AF's and CU's for the price of postage?
I spoke to him on the phone about them and, although it was extremely
convenient for me to just come pick them up I didn't get them :-(

Anyhows, I live in Heywood Drive (with an E, for all those of you on the
phone right now. Grrrrr).  That's in the Round Green sort of area.  Short
walk from the Sixth Form, which is nice.  Up Stockingstone Hill, which
isn't.

Yeah, I have the power one which clips on to the chip (well should clip, it
has to be stuck on with blue-tack else it pops off) and its just
unreliable, some times the screen stays black, soometimes it goes red (I
have to power down then) and if the machine resets it's self from a crash,
or using a comodity then it will go into a never ending boot loop. Plus it
has the nasty habit of disssabling my blizzard card, and I can't press "2"
to dissable it either. Who was it that said about soldering directly to the
chip? and does the 3 finger reset work?

I'm with Neil on this one.  Maybe 99.9% of user will want a floppy /once/,
use it, think it's slow, break a disk and then use it as a frisbee.  They'll
find how much fun that is and continue to buy floppy disks just to use as
frisbees, thus lulling people into thinking floppy disk is a popular medium
and we'll be stuck with them forever.

As I say, I'm with the man Bothwick.  Handy as they are, I only use them
occasionally.  I think you've forgotten what this argument was all about.
It's whether or not to include a floppy drive with the NG.
I agree most peeps ever need to use them, and will only end up sticking
rulers in there to make the button pop out.  Why don't you ask some people
with iMacs how they fared without one?

*Everything* bumps the price up, and several times by the time the
distributors, shipper and dealers have added their markup. If it is so
cheap, surely you won't object to paying the slight extra when you order

The MCC isn't aimed at traditional computer users. Yes, the 90% figure
was made up, but I'm pretty sure it's about right.

Which is why you can still buy them. But the general consumer audio
systems sold in Dixons et al rarely have turntables these days. They
are extinct technology as far as that market is concerned. The analogy
is slightly flawed anyway, since audio material has a longer useful life
than computer programs. I still listen to music from the 70s but I don't
play ZX81 games anymore.

Floppy, Zip, Orb, anything else with a USB interface. The MCC should be
able to handle them all. so should Amiga decide which of these you
*have* to buy, or leave the choice with you? Remember the case design
includes space for one extra storage device, if you fit a floppy as
standard, you prevent others using it for something else.

Leave it to the user's choice, that's the Amiga way.

I do name them correctly. Each filename adequately describes the content
of the file. It's not my job to tell the OS the format of the data, I've
got datsatypes.library to do that for me.

It also means that if someone sends me a JPEG file with a .gif extension
(as some web pages contain) I don't have to rename it before my system
can use it.

Are we talking about the Active with Chris Wiles in it? He was a tad vicious
towards me a while back when I ommited Active from a poll I was doing on my
website to find out people's favourite Amiga company. There was just ten
companies you could choose from which I'd though of off the top of my head,
and a box where you could enter a company of your own choosing! He sent me an
email along the lines of:

    "Why have you left Active out! We have been serving the community longer
than
    most of those in your list! You obviously don't know what you're talking
about"

blah, blah. (not those exact words, btw). I sent him an email saying I'd put
Active in the list, which I did and got the reply saying "No! Sod you, don't

They didn't produce two drives, they only produced the external SCSI
one for a couple of years. The SCSI is still only available as external
AFAIK. The IDE internal was a later addition to the range.

Yup. The frameset is the page with the <frameset> tag(s). The pages

It's just a plastic shell. Take it away and the drive mechanism is

Wouldn't some paddle type rocker switch be more ergonomic than a
wheel ? I reckon it would cause less middle finger ache, or summat.

Yeah, I've got the same problem.  I have been unable to locate NListTree
anywhere - it's not on any of the AFCDs either :(  Anybody know where
it can be found?

BTW, I did ask Stefan to mail it to me, but I think he's been too busy
trying to get 2.1 ready - not helped by my streams of bug reports and
enforcer hits that I've sent him ;)

I've no idea whether these allegations are true or not, but it's the

I second that. Most hardware I have bought came from Power.I had a problem
with only one piece of hardware and had absolutely no problems getting it

Well, I could type up the manuals for Pinball Dreams and Fantasies
easily enough - they're just folded A4 size sheets. Illusions has a very

By the way, I had LHA'd my hard disk installed version of Pinball Dreams
for those who cannot get the floppy version to work and those who want
to play the game from HD.

the above request.IIRC Putty was the original game which was renamed Silly
Putty when released as a budget but I may be wrong. I also got Worms today
(not DC)and that works perfectly from floppy but after using the installer
in gets to the copy protection input and locks solid apart from being able
to cycle one digit via the joystick.

Well I have to say it didn't make such a big difference on my 060/PIV
A4000 (I have a Hypercom 3+) at first. Then I've switched to a 56k
modem, and I have tried it on the internal serial port. NOW it does make
a huge difference. The mousepointer was jerking, multitasking wasn't as
responsive anymore, but once I plugged the modem back to the Hypercom,
there is hardly any load on the system when I browse the net. 
And if you've got a Laserprinter, printing becomes very fast. My OKI is
printing the pages almost instantly. I love it. Buy it!

Yes, because (as you snipped) the PC architecture is brain-dead enough not
to support BootP and TFTP without mucking around with boot ROMs. This is a
function of bad design rather than suggesting that floppies are useful. If
it was a Sun, an Alpha, an SGI, an HP or (for crying out loud) a Mac, I
wouldn't need floppies. Ever. I'm assuming that the new Amiga technology
will be good enough to deal with this.

Why would I want to? I'd send it over the network, or obtain it again
somewhere else. The MCC is not really the sort of thing that you'll write
a thesis on, but if little Jimmy wants to do his school projects on it
then you can buy an external floppy. I will continue to contest that
(assuming it doesn't flop) the majority of people that buy the MCC will
never need a floppy drive, and as such including one would be stupid.

Do you want a floppy drive for your video recorder, CD player or teletext
decoder?

The MCC is aimed at a different market than the people who need to use
floppies. If you want to use floppies, buy something that's designed as a

Putty: It was originally called Silly Putty but the name was changed to
Putty at the last moment, probably due to a licensing dispute or
something.

Worms: Do you have the C= cd.device installed? If so, Worms assumes that
it's on a CD32 and switches to joystick mode. Bad Worms. Evil Worms.
There's a patch that "fixes" this and does some other stuff, but I can't
for the life of me remember what it's called - probably on Aminet
somewhere.

I've answered this with - for me - the most appropriate answer available,
but since I'm intending to get the ATX version of the MCC, I'm not entirely
sure whether it's relevant or not...
Personally, I'd like a 3.5" drive, if only to retain compatibility with
existing Amigas (assuming they're incorporating a 68000 emulator) but since
I intend to be of the 'Do It Yourself' mentality - at least initially - what
comes with the boxed NG won't bother me - at least for a few months...:-)

Hmmm, I think it would require more than one line to explain
adequately (and that sig is going to get too big fairly quickly
if anything else is added to it) - maybe a regular (weekly?)
"MANAGER" post would be a better idea?

Im glad to see that the Amiga public were not so willing to except this
pack
of lies.. I know exactly who sent this and I know why. The same people
have
phoned me up and threatened to beat me up, in alot harsher language I
might add.
The are a constant threat to my reputation, and I feel they have
already done
some damage.

Basically they're a bunch of aggressive, vulgar, immature little kids
jealous of
me getting gloom3 in the shops - and this isnt me being big headed,
they told me
this over the phone. they said how could i get a game published and
they couldnt.
so its bitterness basically.. when they grow up they'll realise just
how childish
they look starting up a 'hate' campaign against me - if you search for
my name in
afb you'll see that they're so immature they've set up a discussion to
insult me.

on IRC they constantly harass me, they write to the mags about me, they
phone me,
they even send insulting stuff about me into AF and it gets on the
CD's.. and this
is just the stuff I know about, imagine the things they've done behind
my back..

recently more and more of my articles have been refused by different
amiga magazines
around the world, and i have been getting negative feedback from alot
of users
associated with their weird 'cult'..

I can disprove *every* single allegation I have seen o their site, and
I will do if
I have to. but im quite sure the amiga public wont jump to any
ridiculous conclusions
without questioning me first. and the so called 'stealing'
allegations.. one of my
games was been based on Source code of another blitzbasic game, BUT the
author was
fully creditted in my docs, and he gave the source away as FREEWARE..
getting at me
is like getting at Peter Mcgavin for his excellent ADoom, he used
someone else's source
too.. and hardcoding results into tCPU? heh what a joke.. I'll admit it
is no
revolutionary piece of software, but it does actually do tests reliant
on CPU speed and
give unique results.. I have about 450 results from different peoples
amigas right hehr
on my harddrive, and i will paste them to my site if need be... what im
trying to say
is that these people are a bunch of fools, dont beleive anything they
say...

i'm not going to stoop to their childhood level and reveal who they
are.. altho I could
anytime i want. I have their address, phone number and atleast 2 URLS
where they admit
to being nasty to me over the phone and insulting me.. thats 2 'hate'
sites and a
discussion group.. seems like an unhealthy obsession for teenage boys
doesn't it?..

give it up, no one is beleiving your filth... next time you do
something like this I
may be forced to tell every one who you are and what you're called
etc.. I'm sure 450
satified registered DWaRFx users all steering clear of you would make
you very popular
amongst the Amiga community?..

Right, sorry about that folks but i thought it was about time i cleared
my name :-)..
Im not saying im the greatest coder in the world, im just battling
along learning all
the time and trying to support my favourite computer...  id hate to be
driven off to
develop on the PC, just because of the attitudes of a few kids, the
amiga community is
one of the things which has kept me firmly rooted in the amiga scene,
don't lets have
that change..

Hey site has been updated just recently, and there's preview gfx of my
next game - the
dead walk, if you want to see them, expect a demo early september maybe
:).. I'm also
creating a game in Java for fun, which at the moment will run on mac /
linux / and
PeeCee.. But Im only learning Java because a) its part of my course at
Uni and b) when
it comes out on the Amiga i'll have a head start on the rest of you..
haahaa :-))..
watch out for a few alpha software Java releases as soon as daytona
(amiga's java
virtual machine) comes out...

Sorry I missed the WOA everyone, but i had to cancel due to going to a
funeral, :-(..
