What a great idea :)
I always wanted a copy of Gloom or Marvins Marvellous Adventure as part of
a subscription deal...
Come off it people - Ben said before that we wanted the moon on a stick and
we still wouldn't be happy with it. 44% is a hell of a saving, and I can't
see that AF providing 10% discount and a 20 game would make us happy, 'cos
then some berk would want 11%, 21 game and a single DD disk.
Sorry Ben but apparently you are in this for fun and charity and we want the
worst possible deals that you can come up with :) How about a free copy of
ImageFX 4 with every subscription - that should see AF dead within 2 months

Although it protects us to some extent, it's not a failsafe - we would
almost certainly still get sued if there was a copyright breach, which
would definitely mean the end of AF.

You're subscribed to the list. You replied to the first posting. We

That isn't what the documentation says at all. I won't go further,
I'll let people read the original for themselves.

Then you "may as well" have credited the original as well. Hey, I "may
as well" just use other people's software in future. Why bother trying
to write my own when I can't do as good a job?

But why bother? It's far less functional than the original. Anyone
could just get ZXAM and the snapshot and play the game. Programmers
write software to satisfy a need. There was no need for VikRad.
The creditation in the documentation wasn't particularly well
highlighted, either. You said you "used parts of ZXAM". You don't say
"this is ZXAM with functionality cut to pieces and my name on it". Do
you?

You can download illegal .adfs all over the `net and get them from
CD-ROMs. It doesn't make it right.

*Freeware *isn't *Public Domain*. If you mean Public Domain, say Public
Domain. You are not allowed to use parts of freeware code, all it
means is that you don't have to pay for it.

Good grief. It is *nothing* the same. Doom was released with the express
intention of it being ported to other platforms. You can't play a Doom
port without buying the original PC version. Explain to me how that is
comparable with your situation.
> The tCPU accusation :
tCPU doesn't work. Whether it is hard coded or not, it *is* broken. It's
not hard to see why people assume there is something fishy going on. I

yourself.

This barely literate posting causes me to doubt your results. However,
I don't care if they are true or false. The point is the plagiarism.
That is *all *it was *ever* about.
> Also I am fluent in HTML, otherwise i wouldnt be able to run a

Yes, you would. Running a company doesn't denote competency. Just ask
Robert Maxwell. The HTML on your site is incorrect in many places. The
design is also hideous, IMHO, but then that is *just an opinion*.

Yes, I think I must have. I've never seen anything with your name on I
would call truly great. Just an opinion, once again.

The altered executables was all we *were* looking at. Stop thinking this
is a personal attack and realise it was genuine concern about programs
you claimed as your work which blatantly aren't.
> proud of like DWaRFx, WBLogo, SkoolZOut
Dwarfx is nothing to be proud of. Sorry, but it isn't. It scattered
old files all over my hard drive and for what? Random kick reasons?

Of course they do. But they don't release them if they aren't their
own work.

It's not like that at all. If you could see it was about plagiarism,
you might understand. Why haven't you explained why JoyMouse
(documented as saying 100% Blitz Basic) is exactly the same as
FakeMouse (no Basic used at all)? If this isn't something for the
Amiga community to be concerned about, WTF is?
> Oliver Roberts for one, I bought his digicam software
> advertised it free on my site and said nothing but good things

Oliver Roberts is an experienced and talented programmer. He looked at
a piece of "your" software and found it to be stolen. Does advertising
his program make him owe you anything? *No, it bloody well doesn't!*
If you have lied about these programs, wasn't he right to suspect
anything else you say? If someone has repeatedly lied to you, don't
you assume other things he says may be lies?
*You* are disappointed with *him*? *I'm* disappointed with *you*. You can't
justify the theft of other coders' work, not no way, not no how.
> I made AmiGreet, it was cloned as WBGreet days later and i got no
Cloned? Or hex edited like you do? If it was the same program with the
name changed, well pot calling the kettle, I'd say. If it was a
similar program doing the same thing but written from scratch then
they did nothing wrong.
Copying ideas isn't the same deal as hex editing someone's name out
and re-releasing.
> credit at all in the docs.. I made WBLogo so days later AmiLogo and
> lots more came out, no credit for me again..
"and lots more". They didn't use your code, they just copied the idea
and rewrote it. I've looked at a couple of programs doing the same
thing and they work much better and share no similarities with your
code. There is nothing wrong with that. How many clock programs are
there on Aminet? How many fortune programs? *Hundreds*. Why should they
credit *you*? Yours were not the first and won't be the last.
How is that different from "The Dead Walk"? A Resident Evil clone, I
believe? It isn't, that's how.
Ideas are not copyrighted. Code *is*.
> I made SSClock and days later VClock was
VClock (unless this is a different clock with the same name) has been
out for years. I have a copy of VClock released in 1993!

If you think there is a problem with using other people's *ideas*, go
talk to Microsoft and Lotus. I'm sure they'd love to hear from you.
They have plenty of lawsuits along those lines. Most people believe in
freedom from Look n' Feel lawsuits, however. Almost every coder I know
would feel that way.
I couldn't give a flying f*uck about ideas. This is about releasing
other people's software with oyur name on it.
> If I was cashing in on you lot by my devious ways then I could see

This isn't the kind of loyalty I want to see.

Did it ever occur to you that you didn't get massive sales because the
reviews of your products gave it such low marks? These are experienced
journalists I'm talking about, not amateur fanzine writers (no offence
to Neil Bullock, BTW).
> I don't want the support of people who are willing to beleive the

*Nobody* was just "willing to believe the worst". We looked at the
software in question first.
We "make you sick"? What reaction would *you* have had if you had seen
something like this aimed at another programmer? Would you have said
"oh, I can't believe that!" and left it? Or would you have tried to
prove it one way or the other?
It tried the second approach. I looked at your programs and said what
I saw. I saw theft.
> However, If I see that the response to this is negative then I

I thought so too. Until I compared the hex of FakeMouse/JoyMouse and
Poo/Version. We don't owe you anything. Tell me how I could have come
to any other conclusion after looking at this software.

I can't say for sure if this is negative or not. I wanted to clear up
exactly *why* I had said what I had. Why I hadn't emailed you personally
before. Why I called you a pirate. Nothing you have said has convinced
me otherwise.

with the greatest respect Ben, but what cost? It is just some freeware/shareware

I was rather amazed the other day when I saw a mouse with a wheel on
the side, but I guess it makes sense.
On the other hand, I have a totally warped (that's how it was
designed!) logitech mouse which is already not at usable if you're
left-handed. Having a wheel on the side would just make it even worse!!
I haven't seen one that had wheels in both places... I don't actually
use the fourth mouse (thumb-)button on my mouse (OK, I'm using it on my
PC at work at the moment, in case you're wondering how I COULD use the
button!!)

Well, the punchinello doesn't actually do the wheel, yet, anyway, does
it?
I've actually had a couple of Microsoft mice work with the punchinello.
But only old two-button ones....

Top 5 reasons to buy a 68060 processor:
1) They're bluddy quick.

Hello,
I have Blizzard 1260 with the SCSI board attached, now I want to
install WB 3.1 onto a SCSI harddisk attached to the Blizzard,
however WB will not install because it doesn't like the 68060

SCSI disappears as well!
Has anyone else tried installed WB 3.1 onto a SCSI disk attached

I don't think you can ban someone with EGroups can you?
You can only set the list to moderate and not let them come

Make a copy of the Install disk, then copy the 68060 and 68040 libraries
to it's libs directory. Then try booting from it.

Subject: [afb] Napalm CD
Date: Tue, 31 Aug 1999 16:30:58 +0200
Hello all,
I feel I have the two most stupid CD drives in the world. I have a SCSI
JVC 2626 CD Writer and an old IDE Mitsumi FX-400. The Mitsumi, though
very old, reads any CD. The JVC on the other hand will NOT read CDRs
written on any other drive (eg. GoldEd6 and Photogenics4 both came on
CDRs, the JVC wouldn't read them). "Proper" CDs (eg. like the AF CDs)
work fine.
Today I received Napalm, and it doesn't work in my Mitsumi drive!!
(remember, the one that's supposed to read anything) T-Zero works fine
in the Mitsumi drive. The Napalm CD isn't even recognized (No disk in
drive CD0:). For now I have to use my JVC for playing Napalm, but this
way I have no CD audio.
Does my IDE driver not like the CD? Does anyone know a solution? How can
a CD that is recognized in my HiFi system and in my (OLD) car hifi NOT
work in a computer drive?

This is caused by Oxypatcher. It installs a little patch program as the
first line in your startup-sequence. When you boot from cold, this
program presumably installs the patches in memory and then reboots to
let these patches take effect. I don't know why it does the rainbow
effect, but I'm fairly sure that's what's causing it.
Unless of course you aren't actually running Oxypatcher on your system,
in which case it must be something completely different. Obviously.

Again..
Gaz got permission to use the source, and alter if for his needs. OK
so it was orginally a spectrum game, using a commerical file, but all
Gaz was doing was re-releasing the game in a 90s mood......
Ok its a bad view to stand, I dont agree with this oh the computer is
dead so we can copy the software...we see a lot of it on the Amiga now
with these lame amiga emulators ripping off 100s of Amiga Games on
CD`s.....
Point is though, was there commerical gain on this? (I could be wrong
here, so dont flame me if I am :P)
> The 'Ball blitz' accusation :
Freeware source right? means anyone can use it and alter it for there
OWN needs, of course you dont just re build it and sell it for =A3=A3=A3=A3 but
if you actually alter the source code to work differently its a big
enough difference to call your own...after all, all coding is partly
doing this anyway. (I know some people will not agree, but coding
starts somewhere....)

Well yes, I am running OxyPatcher. But it can't possibly be that, because it
does it when I turn the computer on (i.e. at the PSU) even when the patch can
not possibly still be in memory!
It also did it when I first installed it, before I put OxyPatcher on the system.
BTW, which is better, OxyPatcher or CyberPatcher? I got CyberPatcher with the

NO HE DIDN'T. Read the docs. In no way does he said "I hex
edited a copyrighted executable to make this program". He
makes no mention of how he wrote it, just that it is
"similar" to the C:Version command that you get free with
Workbench. Well, Version is *not* "free" with Workbench,
it's part of the OS. You pay for it as much as you do
media costs.

The reworking of the game is a valid point. But on face value the game
wasn't too original at all - practically the point of the competitiony
thing (ReaderGames wasn't it?) he entered and WON MONEY FOR.
Besides, if it were freeware source it was based on, wouldn't it make
sense to release the modified source as freeware as well? I've seen the
source to the original and looked at the parts that Gazza said he =
changed.
They aren't exactly mindblowingly complicated routines. I expect he
modified them in the same way ANYONE would - I remarked to myself
that it was poorly coded for a start.
But the point is that most of the game was actually from the Blitz CD,
with relatively minor parts rewritten. Hardly "based on" more like
"improved from" sources by some-guy-who-did-some-code.

The fact is that for all the qualifications he seems to have, that
is, frankly, a CRAP CV. Not in qualifications, or explaining how he
knows stuff, but it's badly laid out, it has spelling mistakes (Math's)
and makes some outrageous claims (since when has Gaz been an Freelancer
for AF?)
> Do Amiga users like chasing off there loyal users..... take Team17 =

Team17 were going anyway. Beleive me, I used to keep correspondance
with one of the playtesters (I used to send him loads of levels) and
he told me they were going to pull out. Not because of c.s.a.g, but
because they couldn't afford to make games like WormsDC and not get
any money back off them. I think it sold 7,000 copies in all. Pitiful.

It's *NOT* all free, though. I seem to remember the Gloom releases
costing money. They were lame to say the least.

With no real mention of the original authors. And not releasing
this "better" code to the community as the original?
> Its up to you.....support amiga or kill amiga....... does it=20
> have to be this way?
Because Gazy Munchkin is a git. Well I think so anyway. Not
supporting Gaz is not going to kill the Amiga. Because it's
already dead. Anyone who thinks AmiGuess and a version utility
with the name "poo" (how PEURILE can you GET?) will save
a computer system is deluded.

Hi Mark Smith,
I am also have a Blizzard 1260 with the SCSI board attached, and was
having the same problem years ago. Copying the 68060 and 68040
libraries to the Install3.1 libs directory, do not solve my
problem and I had boot with the setpatch command.
The problem is that if you boot from the Install3.1 disk (from DF0:)
the system crash because the 68040 and 68060 apparently do not like
the "setpatch" version 40.16, that it's located in the Install3.1
C: directory.
You have to make a copy of the Install3.1 disk and then:
1- edit the startup-sequence in the Install3.1 disk (copy):
ed df0:s/startup-sequence.
; $VER: Startup-Sequence_Install_LD 40.1 (7.5.93)
C:SetPatch >NIL:
C:Version >NIL:
C:AddBuffers >NIL: DF0: 15
FailAt 21.......................
2. Delete or ; the C:Setpatch >NIL:
; $VER: Startup-Sequence_Install_LD 40.1 (7.5.93)
;C:SetPatch >NIL:
C:Version >NIL:
C:AddBuffers >NIL: DF0: 15
FailAt 21.......................
3. Now use this edited install3.1 disk to start your amiga
and install all the workbench3.1
As you may have notice, the problem is that the setpatch
version 40.16 always crashs out and reboots the system.
You have to use the install3.1 disk without the setpatch
command. I really don't know the reasons....
Please escuse my bad english.
Best regard,
Ulises.

How the hell can it be an extension of the version command? It *IS* the

Why not? You don't have to know how to use HTML to run a website design

When you don't get any positive feedback over something you've worked hard on
it can be very diss-heartning. However, considering there over 700 subscribed
to this list I'm sure at least a few are thankful, even though they may not
say so publically. Remember that there are other lists out there. I'm sure
you'll find at least one which you'll like. If your thing is ARexx I'm fairly
sure there are several on the subject you might get some enjoyment out of.
Maybe someone on this list knows where they are?

Goto http://www.worldwidemart.com/scripts/ - there's a whole host of
scripts which are free. The guestbook one is easy to set up (as long as
you know some HTML) and runs as a CGI script from your home dir, not
necisarily cgibin (as long as your ISP/web host allows you to use your own
cgi scripts then you'll be OK). Hope this helps!

No Chris, you aint. Can we drop this now or what? If Gaz has done

Well I cut the line that connects the HD and floppy lights
"together" like it tells you in the manual. Changing the
way round of the connector wouldn't work.. would it?
I don't know how the thing works. I assume it's just a
connector joining the two signals together with a bit
of lame logic.

Bear in mind that only 20 or so people post even semi-regularly. I use
YAM but don't use AlphaSpell (it's shareware and if I'm not going to
register I'm not going to use) so the script was of no use to me.
I'm sure it works very well, but it sort of required one of the 20 or
so posters to be using YAM and AlphaSpell but unable to get them
communicating. I *did* save it though, and put it on my special safe
storage zip, in case I ever need it. So you can consider that a
compliment if you like.
Cheers,

Some people are just never satisfied, are they Ben?
The 44% discount is a *very* good deal, and still people want more. Maybe you
should charge full price for the subs and offer a "free" 2.50 cheque with
each subs copy....
Cheers.

It's definately Oxypatcher that causes it on my 040. I just commented
out the first line in my startup and there was no rainbow effect. Put
the line back in again and it reappears. It was the same on a friend's
060 as well.
It does do it when you first switch on from cold because the patch is
copied into memory and then the computer is reset straight away, before
the rest of the startup is executed. Watch your power light, you'll see
it go dim for a second. (When first powering up)
If it's not that I don't know what could be causing it. Check your startup
sequence, see if there's anything out of the ordinary in there.
Of course, it could be a subliminal message from your computer telling
you that it WANTS to run Oxypatcher :)

No, its the 060 doing memory checks or somehting. The screen flashes
whether you run nothing, cyberpatcher or oxypatcher, from a reboot or
switching on at the wall.

Well I cut the line that connects the HD and floppy lights

I very much doubt that Amiga would sue for the Version copyright breach since
they probably realise that AF is currently the only standing Amiga mag (not
for long). I don't suppose many others would sue AF either for the same
reason. Of course, surely the reader warrant means that (provided you have the
funds) you could sue the person who caused AF to get sued couldn't you?

Yes, as in Oxypatcher does cause the "rainbow" effect. That is what I
was commenting on in this part. You snipped out the bit where I said it
was possible that this "rainbow effect" could be the 1260 showing that
it is active as the 1230/IV does with its blue lines, etc.....

In fact since a lot of programs still do not use $VER: properly, I use
the hex read option of DirOpus to read through until I see a "version
string" of some sort. As for $POO: , I think most people would have
took one look, thought hmm looks like $VER: and placed the $POO in the
required recepticle and pushed the required "flush" handle.

Actually, I recall Mark Sibly released an Editor for gloom so you
could create your own levels/gfx. It seemed to me that all "Gaz" did
was use said editor, and distrubuted the Gloom2/Deluxe exe with it.

Steve was given the code to Blitz/Ted to update - which he signed a
deal with Guildhall to do. However, they weren't to forthcoming with
reagrds to paying either Steve Matty for TED/Blitz updated, or to
Steve McNamara/Steve Matty for the BSS royalties.
They were also responsible for our game BlitzBombers not actually
being released commerically (both Amiga and PC versions were
in the Pipeline, the Amiga one being cancelled just days from
Mastering) ((Outside intervention from a prolific SNES developer put
paid to that))

Well, I did my Degree in Comp Sci from 1993-1996, and the first year

The uni itself only brought in C coding as we started our second

My Blizzard 2060 makes that rainbow effect by itself (maybe maprom -
I have not tested).
Oxypatcher makes another! But with a GFX-card they are not visible.
The Oxypatcher one has a tighter spacing of the rainbow stripes.

Sorry, but Minidisc is *BETTER* than CD quality-wise. It uses a 48Khz sampling
Frequency compared to the 44.1 of CD's, and a 24-Bit dynamic rannge, compared to
the 16 (Or 20-bit with SuperBitMapping) range of CD's. Copy digitally from a CD
to a Minidisc and you WILL NOT be able to tell the difference. BUT Minidisc is
not really aiming to replace CD's. DVD's intend to replace CD's
(23.3156923076... Hours of music anyone?). Minidisc will replace the Compact
Cassette. Okay?

For a better example of his work, look at the "Elenium" and "Tamuli" Trilogies.
Only 3 books each, and a stonking good read.

Sorry again;) but recording from CD to minidisk will result in
lower quality sound (minidisk IS capable of much more but is
intentionally reduced in quality I think it's some half-assed
anti-piracy measure.)

Something needs to be made clear here. Just because something is
FREEWARE does not mean you can use and abuse it, then re-distribute it
as your own work or otherwise.
There is only one difference between Freeware and commercial software;
The hole one of them makes in your pocket. All rights remain with the
original author. Freeware *is not* the same as Public Domain; to which
the above quote would apply. . .

It's nothing to do with Oxypatcher (though I guess most reset resident
stuff gives a similar thing to let you know they are active. . .), All
the Blizzards' make a pattern of somekind on powerup/reset - so that you
know the board is working. On my 1230-3 it's a wiggly red line.

This has already been covered. C&W are installing cable modems now, but
they aren't providing the service yet because the don't have the
infrastructure.
The cable modems are built into the digital TV boxes, so when digital TV
is installed you get a cable modem too, but nothing to connect it to.

Just changing the way round for the connector (if you mean swapping

If the HD LED is lighting up when DF0: is accessed, the connector from
the LED is obviously on the wrong header. . .
I should have one in my possesion soon, so I'll have a better idea of
what could be amiss.
If you install excutive, there's an included proglet which put a drive

Well, I think it's hard to say who is right and who is wrong here, so =

Joymouse was written by me, popular to contrary beleif.. Way back when I =

to know a bloke called 'goddy' who was writing a similar program to me.. =
He released it and passed
the src on to me.. he made v1 of his then called fakemouse.. then he rele=

joymouse. He said development was over for the program and anyone wishing=
to suggest improvements
was out of look... So I mailed him and asked for the src to recompile, he=
had since moved to the

since i seem to have to continually justify myself to the AFB list even A=

the staff should have put and end to this, and beleived me.. I got neithe=

contribute anymore.. As for amiga developments, I will keep updating the =

Its a sad day when an active developer can be stabbed in the back by a wh=

have disproved them all via email.. I have done wrong in not giving more =
credit i suppose.. but
really all the src i have compiled belonged to me, and i actually have cr=

Read both my statements and you'll see all of this so called evidence is =
not how it has been

Nothing:
Ok peeps, afaik, Oxypatcher does this:
To make 040's and 060's faster and cheaper, some instructions were left o=
ff it. This /would/ stop software that uses those instructions from worki=
ng, except when the processor hits a bad instruction, it passes it to the=
operating system which then emulates that instruction, usually with the =
040/060.library.
This means that everytime a bad instruction is hit, the computer must =
stop and interpret this instruction, like an interpreting emulator (PC-Ta=
sk with dynamic emulation turned off). This is slow.
Oxypatcher catches this bad instruction, but insted of just emulati=
ng it, it actually writes this new instruction into memory, so that next =
time the CPU hits that bit of code it'll already be the right code, thus =
the computer caries on. (a bit like PC-Task with dynamic emulation on)
Thus, if there is no non-040/060 code in a program, then Oxypatcher wo=
n't do anything at all.
See ya :)

Not entirely true. The dynamic range is really 24 bit, but as the output
frequency is 44kHz I would suspect that the recording frequency is also
44kHz. ATRAC v4 (compression system of MD) has an inbuilt frequence
converter, so your source can go up to 48kHz. Maybe newer models have a
better system and you're right.
If you record from a very good analoug source with very
good A/D then you can get better results than audio CDs due to the
better dynamic range.
> CD's. Copy digitally from a CD to a Minidisc and you WILL NOT be able
> to tell the difference.
Not true. Your source is 16bit and has a limited dynamic range. But it
is still being compressed (lossy), and there is a (very slight)
difference. It is true that you won't hear a difference because the
compression system is so good, but technically the signal has been
"degraded".
On my setup you can hear the difference, but that's because my Pioneer
CD Player with Legato Link S sounds soo good, and I have the cheapest
Sony MD recorder (Its AD/DA system is not that good). But it sounds as
good as CD players for the same price.
> BUT Minidisc is not really aiming to replace CD's.
I never quite understood where people would get that idea from. "You
have MD? But there aren't as many records as on CD! MD must be a flop."

I don't think it is a anti piracy measure. Think about it. When you copy
something, it can only be as good as the original, when
copied digitally, then it is exactly the same as the original. But MD
has only one fifth of storage compared to a CD, so compression kicks in.
And it is lossy compression. In fact I think they tried pretty hard to
make ATRAC that good. Have you heard the first MD recorders? There you
could quite easily spot the difference (OK, when you knew "where" to
hear for them ;) But now? Impossible (nearly)!

So, let me get this straight; you sent in some contributions to AF, which I
presume that they paid you for, yes? How does this mean that the AF
staff owe you something in protection?
It's probably best that the AF staff did keep out of it (in the main); if

You're missing one vital ingredient. Mindisc also uses lossy compression. So
no matter what it'll never be as good as the original.

It's a digital signal we're talking about right? which is not the same as a
digital clone of the CD.
On your average run-of-the-mill Hi-Fi bought for a few hundred quid maybe not.
Listen on a real Hi-Fi however and you can tell the difference.

start screen (where you enter the copy protection code) but it then
goes straight to the mission failed you're dead screen:-( I know that
this problem can be fixed on a 68040 by choosing boot without startup
(avoiding 680x0 libraries and setpatch) but the PPC board stores those
libraries in the rom and I don't know how to make the funkers go
away:-(
Please, if anyone knows some magic trick (anything up to human
sacrifice (I really like GS2000;-) to get around this I will be very
greatful.

I have a pretty good hifi, the cheapest thing in my hifi is the MD
recorder :) and you can hear it! But a friend of mine has one of those
more expensive MD recorders from Sony, and they sound just great. No
real Hifi addict will admit it, but they are as good (or as bad) as
comparably priced CD players.

Correctamundo:) the A500 sitting next to my A1200 has a little box

Hold on a sec, would an 040 optimised version of a program be smaller/larger
than an 68000 version? I`m pretty certain it would. So chances are he`s lied
here too.
> since i seem to have to continually justify myself to the AFB list even
> AFTER I have issued a statement then I have decided i will no longer
You wouldn`t have to justify your self if you didn`t keep conniving and
lying. And dont say you haven`t because your doing it now.
> contribute to Amiga Format magazine, why? Because the staff should have
> put and end to this, and beleived me.. I got neither so I'm afraid I can't
OOOOOH NOOO! You can't blame it on Ben (which is what you`ve just done),
as everyone has said, this is the MOST on topic thread we`ve seen on
here for ages, and we are just trying to get to the bottom of it all.
Why should be have nipped this thread in the bud ay, if you`ve got nothing
to hide?
(though there is/was a bit of slagging going on, but you`ve got to expect
that because we have nothing else we can do to repay you for what you
have done to others..)
> contribute anymore.. As for amiga developments, I will keep updating the
Sorry, but this is no great loss! Anyone on this list could do a reader
review and know more about what they are talking about than you!
And as for /your programs/ on the CD, I hope you dont get anymore
on there, as we have seen, they /could/ be a threat to the magazine!
> programs I'm interested in and if I feel the need to make anymore I will..
> but I certainly wont be looking for support through the backstabbers on

Oh shut up!,.. I`m sick of this "oh your stabbing me in the back",
"your driving away a developer", "your accusations are wrong"
BOLLOX! NOONE here has stabbed you in the back, we dont owe you
anything (esspecially not for your /contributions/ to the amiga
scene!) if you hadn`t done anything wrong in the first place the
thread wouldn`t have even started.
> Its a sad day when an active developer can be stabbed in the back by a

Really,.. prove nothing ay?
So you`ve changed your mind that you ripped of Version then?
And what about SetPatch97, you said nothing about that..
Surely not another creation from /hand of hex/.

Right, I`m going to prove it once and for all.. I`m sorry this has gone
on way to far enough, and your twisting the truth now.

It`s got nothing to do with them, this is a topical debate.
Ben has done right and kept our of it.

Joymouse was written by Gareth Murfin, by virtue of an
optimised recompile? Since when does typing 'make joymouse.c'
constitute a rewrite?
And it displays OH SO SLOPPY practice that he compiled
an app such as Joymouse (Fakemouse?) for an 040+. Since
when have you had to have an 040 to use either a mouse
or a joystick? Idiot.
> have been given more credit than he was - but i still never

No, you rereleased it for no reason, changed the name for the
sake of it and caused havoc and confusion. What was wrong
with keeping the original name, versioning blah blah blah?
> since i seem to have to continually justify myself to the AFB

We don't care that you contribute to the magazine, frankly we
don't need or read your dire articles anyway. And the NERVE you
have classing yourself as an "Freelancer for Amiga Format Magazine"
is incredible.
I suggest you talk to John Kennedy or Nick Veitch or even
Ben Vost who *do* Freelance for other magazines. It's a *teeeny*
bit more involved than "Reader Reviews"
> the staff should have put and end to this, and beleived me..

That's good because we won't be using them, due to the fact that
there are already better versions of any program you make on
Aminet, usually uploaded BEFORE yours, coded in C and not Shitz
(sic) and have decent installer scripts that don't assume you're
using a 1.3 Workbench.

We *have* your side of the story - two whole statements worth.
Both contradictory, both irrelevant. We beleive you are a fraud,
an egotistical idiot with a lust for fame, and most of all a
pirate. And for all it's worth, you can't program for toffee
IMO. (Although I must say I was almost impressed by the Dawn

> thanks for nothing AFB.. and i really expected Amiga Format

AFB is not controlled by Amiga Format, just as the CU List is
not controlled by CU Amiga. It's a free mailing list, with
minimal restrictions. Ben can't throw people off it because
it's OPEN. He can moderate them, but if he agrees with the
points in hand, then he need not do ANYTHING about them. He
hasn't, I assume that means he is either promoting healthy
debate or wholeheartedly agrees with us (or doesn't give
a flying fuc^H^H^H either way - most likely)

JetPac was sort of like that. You /did/ collect pieces of your spaceship
and plonk them all in one place to build it, but it was all done on the same
screen with nasty alien thingies flying at your face. Then you had to pick
up fuel and drop it on your rocket so you could take off.
In fact, I think I'll have a game now.

Did you actually have to edit the EXE? AKAICR the names of testers and
whatnot are simply stored in a text file. Anyway, if you only did it to
your copy (which you're allowed to do whatever you like to) then that's OK.
By me, anyway.

Drop the 'we hate Gaz' bit, but this could be an interesting discussion on

It must be a right of passage - programming in BASIC on the
Spectrum. You didn't move onto assembler on the C64 did you?
:)
Suffice to say any programmer that started out like that
certainly knows what they're on about, and have rock solid
morals. Why pirate a game when you can program it yourself?
etc.

MiniDisc *does not* offer better sound-quality than CD. I
took the Pepsi Challenge and I can tell the difference... :-) I took a
DDD encoded CD, recorded digitally via the optical outputs onto MD.
The difference CAN be heard between the MD copy and original CD. The
MD was connected to a pre/power amp and the CD played
back via the same pre/power amp and separate CD transport/DAC.
It all boils down to compression.
A LaserDisc with it's analogue picture frames will offer better
picture quality than the digital picture frames of a DVD. A DVD, with
its variable bit-rate, when paused will show grain and blockiness
whereas a CAV LaserDisc will not - that's compression. It's the same
with MiniDisc, all sound frequencies above a certain threshold are
discarded i.e. it's compressed to fit 74 minutes of reasonable sound
quality onto a small re-recordable disc. The sonic equalivent of
squeezing a quart into a pint pot. It can't be done unless corners
are cut.

This will happen only when Minidisc players and discs become cheap
enough to be literally disposable. How many cassette players do you
have in your house? I have 14......one in the car, double tape in a
midi system in one bedroom, clock radio cassette in another, tape
player in the kitchen, several Walkmans laying about the place, midi
sytems in the kids bedroom's etc etc.....

The chances are that you're just arguing the semantics of what he
said here.
The source came from a B.U.M. (No poor jokes please) It was surely
there with the intention of helping people do similar things. How
similar is a different matter.

I cant, but I can honestly say I`ve never hexed and saved/kept
an exe. It`s all part of the learning curve. What isn`t is when you
do it 30 times and release 'em all.

I think we`ve all said numerous times that we dont hate him, but
what he's done comes with a lot of resent and you have to expect
that people will rip this piss, because it`s all we can do.

One Amiga's latest patents describes the user interface a "lenticuar".
Are they going loopy or what?
What next? A GUI with a fish eye viewpoint?
A fly multiscreen?

you can get it from www.octamed.co.uk
Turn the play mode to 1-64 channel mixing, then set mixing options to 8-bit
disk or 16-bit disk. You might need to transpose your samples to make it
sound right.

Well done Rob,
You got in before me with that one. This really has dragged on long
enough. If people want to use it as a springboard to discuss the
subject of piracy in general then fine, but if it's all just gonna
centre around Gaz Murfin then I'm not bothering to read 'em anymore.
Good on Andy Crowe for getting Murfin to speak up. Not so good on
everyone using this as an excuse to throw some abuse around. Gaz has
been exposed for what he is. It's all left a rather sour taste. Let's
move this on a bit now, eh ?
Cheers,
Eddie
