Sorry - should have said that it's Voyager that's crashing randomly.. Ive=
 got NC2 updated with all the patches but these crashes still happen.

Btw does anyone have problems running X-Arc.. Mine decodes the archive an=
d then crashes before displaying the contents... I've gone back to using =
the CLI :)

Also whilst I'm at it - has anyone found a working version of LHA compile=
d for the PPC processor..... if anyone has I'd be grateful for a copy - t=
hanks.

Thanks Andrew and Neil for the YAM advice - I guess the code will get fix=
ed eventually... it's a shame the problem wasn't sorted before YAM became=
 a final v2 release. Still, IMHO for free software it can't be beaten. =

Actually, I work in a newsagents and we've got some good offers on out of
date stock; 'proper' flapjacks (various flavours) - 15p, chocolate biscuits
and fig rolls - 30p, Polo Supermints - 20p. All excellent :)

Oh, and if you get the chance, try Mini Smarties before they get banned;
gaudy circular plastic container, filled with 50% size Smarties. Look
suspiciously similar to pills, so they won't last long :)

I'm with you I think there good, always was a Bond fan my best is 'Goldfinger'
also has the best theme music. Even though seen them all at the cinema (first
one on my own was Goldfinger) but went with parents to one before (i think)
and countless times on TV. I've enjoyed this blockbuster back to back
repeats.

The Vidi 12 takes power from the floppy port.  (It needs either 12V or
-12V that the parallel port doesn't provide, in my recollection.)

The Vidi Amiga takes everything it needs from the parallel and joystick
ports.

The Vidi RGB, an RGB splitter for the Vidi Amiga, *does* require an
external power supply.  Here's what the piece of paper in the box says:

Funny... I managed to find out WHY there was nothing. Maybe
that's where you're going wrong - resigning yourself to
assuming it will never come out. That's silly. The attitude
"oh ANOTHER announcement - I guess THAT'S a load of bollocks
TOO!" is a defeatist one. One announcement (and I am fairly
confident it will be soon-ish) will be right, and then I'll
have the privilege of being able to point at your (more
likely my monitor) and laugh heartily BECAUSE YOU WERE WRONG.

The feature set you saw "fixed" ages ago was the ISA version
of the board. Mick also wanted to get some licensing done from
Petro to get AGA chips in bulk, but was refused it on the
grounds that they didn't have any. ISA was going out, it
would have been cheaper and more productive to use PCI.
Technology moves on, and Mick would have released what would
have essentially been a dud board. PLUS, the A5000 was
announced, which had a plethora of features that the BoXeR
didn't have. To be able to make a sequel, the original
must do well, and if the original BoXeR was woefully under
specced, it WOULDN'T have sold and there WOULDN'T be a
next version. After all the duff workaround make-do m/bs
and accelerator cards we've had, I would have thought it
was a good decision. I guess you can't appreciate it as
much as I can..

Where would he have gotten the money? Plus, I doubt he
would want to repeat the saga Nintendo and Sony got into
with their consoles - release it at a huge price, make
a new version, drop the price a ton, and have people SCREAM

In use, but ANY use? ISA sucks, you can't do anything with
it. What can you do with ISA slots? No decent graphics cards
are available for it, no decent network cards (maybe the
3Com 3C509B-TP) no NOTHING. So you're stuck with expensive
Zorro components.

And the I-Win isn't? It's extremely similarly specced,
but I'm willing to bet the BoXeR is better solely because
I know what the exact specs for it are, and I-Win haven't
released more than vague wavings of the hand over a bunch

Interesting points, thanks for pointing them out to me. I agree that to
program well that it would be best to know how the computer is working,
but I mean to say that these things should be easier- perhaps I am
confusing design with programming.

Neil Bothwick has already answered this...
But I just opened my Vidi Amiga (12) RT box and checked the "device" itself
and also the manual.
The 23pin connector is to connect to the disk drive to provide power to it.
The "device" itself plugs into the parallel port and you also have a cable
to connect the video output.
That's it....

If you want a photostat of the manuals and also an original disk with the
software on (I have 2 - go figure!), then email me privately.

I got my new copy of "Piece Of Cardboard Monthly" this morning, with the
usual freebie copy of Amiga Format & CD. Well chuffed am I, Yes.  ;-)

Btw, did anyone notice the famouse ppl in the new issue? Lou Carpenter from
Neighbours on the top right corner of page 15. Probably trying to sell Jim
summit dodgy. And also, theres Office Pest (from the dubious publication,
Loaded) in the Vox-Pop thing on page 11. Oh yeah, and the usual pictures of
David Badeal.. ;-))

Congratulations on another excellent mag! The CD is another goodie. The
complete beginners guide is very useful too for getting the AFCD to
work properly.

I cant wait for the new improved "TOTALLY FRESH" look. Is this a total
mag overhaul in terms of design? It sounds like it to me. I just hope
that damn orange colour gets consigned to the scrap heap. Its horrible.
Can you not bring back the purple colour you used to have in Mailbag?

By the way, in a way I'm pleased that the ABC figure didnt go down too
much. Will the new figure mean less pages?

	I know this is a fairly shameful plug, but after the deal I got on a
new hard disk and memory Simm, I am a very happy man, I paid less than
140 of our British pounds for a 13GB Hard disk, a 32MB Memory Simm, and
some other gubbins(mouse mat, paper, etc)-(65 quid less than shopping
anywhere else local) and I got it from a brand new business in my local
area(Ok, he`s also my brother, or I wouldn`t give him such a plug), but
the prices are extremly cheap, beating those in Amiga Format hands down
and beating practically all of those in Computer Shopper(And yes I
really have tried hard to beat these). 

	The business is called Liquid Computing and specalise not only in the
sale of both hardware and software for gaming consoles, but also
building Custom Amiga`s and PC`s, whilst upgrading older ones, the
prices are really good. So anything you want cheap(For Amiga, PC or
Gaming Consoles) E-mail:- LiquidCom@amigax.freeserve.co.uk saying what
you want or what you want done and you`ll get an excellent price pretty
sharpish,I can tell you, the only bummer is that he only delivers(It`s
a mail order company, with shop plans on the way at present) to the UK,
but apparently that is about to change.

Sorry :(, for the plug, but the deals are great for both Amiga and PC
Users as well as those of us with a playstation or N64, and despite him
being my brother I wouldn`t say this unless he saved me some real
money! :)

I'm sending this again. I don't think it arrived the last time.

Just a note to say AF128 is an excellent read. The CD was also a goodie
too. I enjoyed the MP2 files of Jim Collas (is it just me or does he
sound like Kermit the Frog?) as well as the audio tracks.

The beginners guide to the AFCD was also a very good read. Although
I've got every AFCD, I have had one or two problems with running them.
Thanks for doing it.

I cant wait for issue 129's "TOTALLY FRESH LOOK". Does this mean the
design of the magazine is getting changed? It sounds like it :-)

Either way, I really hope you will get rid of that terrible orange
colour in the magazine. Bring back that dark purple colour. It was a
lot nicer :-)

Re: the slight drop in circulation. Will this mean a drop in page count
too? And, do you know if those readers were DD readers? God, I really
wish those floppy disk readers would get a CD drive. Don't they know
how cheap they are now??

Lastly, I was a bit peeved by the closure of Backstage. But, hey I
understand that it was not financially viable anymore. I've not used
the subscribers' disk for a few months anyways, so that was no major
loss to me. Maybe you could sort out a few subscriber benefits (small
competitions especially for subscribers or special offers) just to keep
us happy :-) Hey, I know we save 44% on the price, but little extras do
make a difference too. Just ideas Ben!

Anyways, congratulations on the mag and keep up the great work

I did check my duplicate rate with 115200 + orig serial port:
the rates varied between 0.006% and 0.02%. Discarded for bad checksum 0%
(one download running); under 1% (several downloads + email download)
- that's it.

or a peecee. It's even got an infra-red link, so I wonder if the IOblix i=
nfra-red support might come in useful......

Well I have been running YAM 2 with Miami Dx (v0.9j) for about three week=

Some of you may remember the problems I was having with my 1200T and my
second-hand power flyer. It wasn't loading up to workbench and my internal
drive wasn't working.

Firstly, big thank yous to everyone who offered advice. It was much
appreciated.

An even bigger thank you to Andy Thomson (from High Wycombe - AF128,
Workbench) for inspiring me with the answer.

Turns out I still had PC0: in devs and that was causing workbench to hang on
boot-up. Moving it from devs allowed wb to load up normally.

So, I'm left with a perfect power flyer but a non-functional internal df0:.
I guess I can get around this by getting the Catweasel and a kylwalda. Can
anyone recommend these?

Also, how do I get rid of the "Df0: ????" icon in the meantime. What's the
dismount command line (I know someone did post this but I deleted the mail,
sorry)?

Great issue 128, by the way... the WOA report almost makes me wish I was
there ;) ...

I'm with you I think there good, always was a Bond fan my best is
'Goldfinger'
also has the best theme music. Even though seen them all at the cinema
(first
one on my own was Goldfinger) but went with parents to one before (i think)
and countless times on TV. I've enjoyed this blockbuster back to back
repeats.

ok then,

1) When are the new amigas sceduled for release? I thought I read on CUCUG
that they were delayed until jan/feb 2000, but then I listened to the WOA
mp3's on the AFCD and they still said before xmas?

2) are there any ISP's in Luton or Dunstable which I could dial into using a
local number, so I get unlimited time for 3.5p. Demon used to (still do?)
but I left them because of the constant line drops, but even then they
weren't on NTL :/

3) Anyone got this greatXcape ISP working on amiga yet? they have an ad in
the national papers ( http://www.greatxcape.com ) but aweb, IB and all
versions of V either crash the site or tell me they don't support the
current SSL type yet :P 

ps. greatxcape say they give you free calls after 6 and at weekends, and
they guarentee a fast service, plus there are no changing phone companies
involved

4) Oh, and who was that person who said he was in Luton?, own up. Which
reminds me, there is a reader ad with a luton area code phone

Yes this month the content did seem a bit thin and the CD wasn't worth a
second play.

but it's still a good read for all those who don't have net access, not that

If you're using DOpus 5.x you could hide it with Hide-bad disks via the environment settings. Same should be possible with NewIcons. On a standard WB its very hard to get rid of it :(

Any browser is likely to crash at some point. Especially if you have
low memory and load all images - it gets fragmented and eventually
gives up. Does the screen go all jumbled, with lots of yellow? If so,
that's your problem (it could be that even if that isn't what
happens). How about the cursor stops moving and you get two little
lines under it? Same reason.
If so, I suggest you do 'flush document cache' or 'flush images' from
the first menu (they flush from memory, not disk. Helps lower
corruption.

I think that was something to do with one of the MUI classes. Are you
sure you have up to Verson 1.3 of NC2?

Calling all (good) programmers.
I have several important files on my HD (CV, config files etc) and
want to keep backups. I have no way of backing up the entire HD.

What I would like is a program (commodity?) to sit in the background
waiting for these files to be accessed. When they are, a requester
pops up and says "This file is important, back it up!" or words to
that effect. Then whenever I change a file I am reminded to keep a
backup of it.
The important files could be a simple list in a text file. Ideally, I
could specify a directory in the list, and when a file is accessed,
the requester asks if I want to save it automatically to the specified
dir on a floppy. This would obviously require the program to know when
a file is saved (no good making a backup of a file which is just being
read!).

I can see how it might be pretty easy, and I'd do it myself but I'm
not good at making programs 'lurk' and watching files.

Any offers?

Does it have to be extension based? I was under the impression that
servers could determine MIME types in slightly more intelligent ways if
they wanted. 

In any case, datatypes could be mapped onto corresponding
MIME types without too much trouble, which would let you trust what the
remote server says for remote files (I'm hoping for some sort of
integrated networking :) ) and work it out for yourself if it's local thus
removing the need for two sets of file handling configuration. Or am I
rambling?

That's me getting too used to UNIX semantics, that is. Ok. Aux: is
designed for fairly dump serial communication IIRC - there should be a
sample mountlist entry somewhere on your setup. You should be able to edit
the mountlist thingy to get it to use squirrelserial.device (or whatever
it is) rather than serial.device. It might possibly work :)

Finally got my first ever issue of AF delivered on subscription to my
front door as promised. And what's this ? It seems heavier than the
shop copies. Must be the promised extra 7 pages of content - sorry,
no, it's a lump of wraparound cardboard. Hey, not bad. I didn't get
that from WH Smiths. From what I've read so far it's beem worth every
penny but - hold on - I've just had a close look at the pictorial

Aaaaargh! You AF people just keep harrassing me! Not content with
leaving 3000 emails in my AFB folder, you choose to drop AF128 through
my door when I've barely started on AF127 yet!

Nice issue, btw :) Although I thought the cover could have been
better, that WoA logo seems to have been used too many times before...
And who thought it would be a good idea to have the image on the back
of the CD case wrap around so that it looks all out of place in my CD
rack? Hmmm? ;)

Oh, and another thing, why is it that although I practically got
laughed off the list a few weeks ago for suggesting that Sun's Magic
processor would be a possibility for Amiga, in AF128 I see the phrase
"Given Amiga's acknowledged partnership with Sun, MAJC would seem a
perfect choice for future Amiga devices."? :)

There was a new port-handler uploaded to Aminet this week. It allegedly

Not according to the Apache docs. However, a CGI script can send it's
own Content-Type: with the data it provides.

As long as you have the possibility to override the server settings if
you prefer. What datatypes needs is the ability to configure actions for
each file type.

I'm not too keen on the orange either, but it stays now as part of the AF
brand. The redesign is a lot more subtle than a complete overhaul, but we
will have more (editorial) pages to give you more stuff. Coming up next
month is an in-depth guide to making sure you get the right machine when
buying a secondhand Amiga and a guide to the ins and outs of
overclocking...

I can only answer the first one so the rest are snipped:

The new dates for the new machines are as follows:

MCC, out Jan-March 2000; ATX, out Feb-March 2000

Cost: MCC between $500-=A31000; ATX undecided.

As you can see there's been some slippage for the MCC (hopefully it won't=

turn into another BoXeR saga), but also the price has (potentially)
doubled. However, this MCC machine will include all the bits you want -
monitor, DVD-ROM, lots of memory and hard drive space and so on.

Datatypes library v45 lets you do that, I believe. Apparantly datatypes do
support various options like "edit", "view" and "play" but C= never
bothered implementing them properly. Sigh.

In any case, it would be nice to have a central MIME prefs that *everything*
used, so you didn't have to keep configuring things. Vapor's MIME Prefs
goes some way towards it, but no other bugger uses it... :(

Pre-release 2 is due out soon, but Olli has been stuck working on JS and

Input devices: They obviously didn't want to clutter up the picture by
having a mouse, keyboard and joystick in the picture;

Duct tape: what duct tape?

Floppy drive: I haven't used a floppy disk (outside the office where we have
to for the floppy coverdisk) in years. If you want to use floppies, then
get an external floppy drive - modern macs don't come with floppy drives
either.

Flast screen monitor: I take it you're talking about an LCD panel display?
wouldn't display all the resolutions the current Amiga is capable of, and
probably won't display all those that the new Amiga is capable of either.
I'm sure you'll be able to buy an LCD monitor, but I wouldn't expect one to
come with the MCC, especially not at the prices quoted for it.

If you look carefully at the dark-black plastic strips down each side of the
miggy, you will see that it looks like someone's put some tape on the miggy,
especially where the 'tape' meets the monitor - there's that nasty gap where
the tape was stretched too far, and then finally comes into contact with the
monitor:

That probably won't turn out right, but never mind.
The flat-screen monitors are only just starting to appear for peecees, and
they reduce eye strain and stuff like that. They look pretty cool too.

I also like the little dots that make up the speaker holes in the 'duct
tape' - the way they seem to fall down randomly and then get bunched up at
the bottom - a lot like the squares on the Workbench 3.1 manual. Don't
reckon that it'll do much for the sound, though.

Does anyone know why Datatypes will allow supportive programs to load files
but not save them? Eg. You can load a picture in PPaint through Datatypes
but you can not save a picture through Datatypes.

Just something that has always puzzled me.

BTW Has anyone noticed the mistake on Page 93?

Not voyager related, but YAM did a weird thing today. I clicked one of
the buttons in the message window to re-sort some mails; and
pageStream was launched! Weird, eh?

I've tried to get it to happen again with snoopdos running; but it

Help!

My iBrowse hotlist has vanished :(

I am currently using the preview version of iBrowse 2 and, for some unknown
reason, the Hotlist menu has stopped working.

Even if I go back to version 1.22 i still get the same problem.

The Hotlist menu is completely empty, there isn't even an option to add the
current page to the Hotlist.

Does anyone know how I can get it back?

l find that your hotlist may be too big, and it can't get enough chip ram=
=2E Try holding down ctrl while pressing rmb to use the original menu rou=
tine, which uses far less memory...

The hotlist is kept as an HTML file, so check if it is still there or
as been
renamed or something. Its called IBrowse-Hotlist.html

The POP3 and SMTP servers are completely separate, and as far as I know have
only both been down at the same time once, and only then for about 10 mins.

From your headers you have your SMTP server set as mail.free4all.co.uk. This

I do! I no longer have any of them though. :(

I found a review in PD Scene of the May `96 issue of CU. Tony H
reviewed it so maybe he knows where to find them? Anyway, at the time
(it was volume 7 being reviewed) they were only available from the
author, Benjamin Cowdall. They were just called "Lee Majors Advocates"
IIRC.

Failing that he may be online and you could find him with ICQ or one
of the various people search engines.

well mine is coming up to 5 years old (in fact might be over now) and is still
working fine. I do use MonEd to give better screen (stop black bars to side)
on some screen res'

all i can say never had any problem with it (the 1438) 10 out of 10 for what
it does.

Received the mag a full day and a half, before the afb-announce mail,
informing me what would be in this months issue.

It was quite interesting reading them in reverse.

Congratulations, IMHO the mags slowly improved this year, despite less
staff, and I would assume budget restrictions.

5 out of 4 people don't understand fractions.

Forget mentions in the Wall Street Journal and mainstream
computer mags.  The NG Amiga story has finally made top
billing in the Evening Times!! ( a well known evening paper
in Glasgow - as a former resident of the City I still buy
it). The weekly computer column usually covers staple fare
like the latest games or PC / Mac hardware and is aimed at
the casual reader.  Last week's top story was about the
re-emergence of the Amiga as a bold challenge by Gateway to
the domination of Microsoft. The story referred to the
Amiga's previous popularity and ground breaking graphics and
sound capabilities of the time. Not likely anyone with a PC
would have paid more than a passing interest to the story
but it is a sign that advance notice is being taken by the
popular press of the developments. Now if the journalist
that writes this column gets a review model (at some stage -
not before Amiga Format :-) along with a couple of these
elusive "killer apps" then this kind of coverage, along with
a  targeted advertising campaign might just take advantage
of the regard thousands of former Amiga users (many still
with their computer in the attic or garage) still have for
the computer. This would stimulate the demand that would
make the big retailers take notice. I know the strategy is a
lot more complex than this but boy did it give me
satisfaction to see the story covered in a 'low tech' paper.

I use mpega to convert them to AIFF or WAV files which I play using play16.
It takes about three times the length of the clip to convert though (on my
030).

The arg is "mpega -A -o blah.aiff blah.mp3" you can use -p to set the
priority from -30 to +30.

On my P75 I use WinPlay3 from the player section of http://mp3.lycos.com

If you R running OxyPatcher with X-Arc, then it makes it crash, duuno why=

That's  exactly why i find his books...well crap, they are written for the
masses, not for the reader that appreciates a well written book.

I ones bought a book by Richard Bachman, The Regulators', and when i started
to read it, i though very soon that it was boring.
Just like the books of Stephen King, i thought, and some times later i read
somewhere that Bachman and King where the same person.

Read the mag. The amiga on the back page is just a monitor and a box with a
cd/dvd drive underneath

   Exactly. Both the Boxer and Iwin system probably have about a 0% chanc=
e of every seeing the light of day, and even if they do, who wants a syst=

I've come up with an even better solution. IMO. Everyone may hate it,
but it's for my use anyway.

Download http://www.lantik.u-net.com/software/packetanalyser.lha .It's
about 20k.

When you disconnect, do as Neil says:

Genesis: rx AmiTCP:bin/netstat status >ram:netstatlog
Miami: miaminetstat -s >ram:netstatlog

The NetStat output is redirected to a file in ram:
Now run my program. In the file requestor choose ram:netstatlog and
admire the results - duplicate packets and %'s immediately!
You can enter the logfile as an argument for PacketAnalyser in the
shell instead of using the requester. This way I have Genesis set up
to automatically run it on disconnection with a predetermined
filename.

Now a question:
I analyse the lines which say
* xxx packets sent
* xxx data packets (x bytes) retransmitted
* xxx packets received
* xxx completely duplicate packets (x bytes)
Are these the right ones? It's not hard to change my program to use
any lines which may be relevant.

If anyone uses it and/or thinks it could be worthwhile (it's very
simple and hardly tested at the mo) please let me know. If anyone
wants I'll make it a bit more 'professional'.
