AmigaQuake, a Gamers Review

A review of Quake? Why? There a so many... but actually I've never read one about the
Amiga conversion. In Germany Quake and QuakeII are "indiziert", that means that the most
wanted Amiga-Game was put on the index, before it was released (for the Amiga).
Therefore in no Game-Magazines you can read something about Quake or QuakeII. That's why
I wrote this stuff here. Also I do not found an "really" nice looking Review of
AmigaQuake, only the 'Results' like those shown at www.clickboom.com.
       ab 18!
The used configuration for the review is my nice Amiga:

    - A1200 ATX BigTower, Blizzard1260 50Mhz + SCSI Kit IV, ZorroII Board,
    - CyberVision64/3D 4MB , OS3.1, 50MB Ram, 4 HardDisks (IDE + SCSI) ~ 5GB
    - ZIP-Drive/CDRom16x (SCSI), VLab, ISDNCard, etc.

    - Sony CDXP 700 + Sony MDJE500 (MiniDisc) for 'backuping' the AudioTracks ;))
    - Dolby Sourround Pro Logic Amplifier for Audio-Listening.... whhuuuhhh. :))

GAMEPLAY REVIEW

1. Playing, shooting
It's amusing. So kids don't play it alone. The easiest way
to play is using the mouse, invert mouse on, freelook on
and the 'change weapon' function on the middle mouse-button
(if you have a 3-button one). Playing Quake with the
keyboards will cause you some hard hits to your keyboard,
because you'll die to often and missed your targets
(crosshair 1). I like the spladding, the blasting of the
enemies. It feels like Resident Evil, but more interactive.
 Quake rocks! I love it!

It's impressive to experiment with Quake. But remember, use
allways CROSSHAIR 1 and FREELOOK on, otherwise it is very
hard to hit the targets. Jumping high on secret places?
look down to your feets, use rocket launcher and shoot and
jump at the same time.... wooow, nice... :) see this in our
GOIGOI Deathmatch Nr.4, at one point I was unable to get
out (except to be killed), or shoot a grenade in a doorway
like playing pool billard and wait if someone screams or
blasts. I like it, but keyboard-play suxx and in anyway
 there's not enough blood. :)

Ultra Violence, cool Deathmatch Level!

TECHNICAL REVIEW
1. Render-Modes, Video-System
How do they beta-testing Quake? Hm, these EXPERIMENTAL CGFX
Double and Triple buffers never worked fine on my system.
Screen is gray and the only thing what I hear is the sound
(if demo running). Some other things do not work, for
 example:

     Display: NTSC 320x200 8bit
     Console: timerefresh (360 degree timetest)
     Result : CRASH

     Display: CGFX 320x240 16bit
RenderM: experimental triple buffer (changed to)
     Result : CRASH

Note: This crashed on MY SYSTEM! Maybe yours work!

But in anyway, the engine is fine and running stable if you
don't do any experiments with it. All render-routines
except the experimental buffers working fine on my machine.
But if I use DBPAL or Double/Triple Buffer it crashed
sometimes. I use CGFX 320x240 8bit with the CGFX Copy
Routine for playing. The CGFX Copy Routine is 1 to 2 fps
faster than the MC68060 Copy Routine, but on my friends
A4000 there is no special difference. So, it's on your own
way to find out the best settings.

2. Technical Info
Hm, where is the real help? I have ONE BIG QUESTION:

    What does -fpu and -mmuhack
    actually do?

Can anybody answer these question? In the .parameters-file
you read "it changes fpu mode" and "turns on mmuhack"...
but in hell, WHAT FPU MODE? using an internal
 mathffp.library? Is it compatible with
CyberPatchers/OxyPatchers routines, or will it cause some
"double calculation". What's MMUHACK? What is "hacked"? I
don't know, but together with OxyPatcher (usemmu=1) its
 crashing the "Quake Render Process".

3. Audio-Modes, AHI
Yo, I have heard so much about AHI crashing sometimes or
making amusing "echo"-effects, but do we need it? ;)

I tested some AHI-Modes with Quake, some are good for use,
but some makes mystic effects like an double output. If you
move through the options with the cursors you ever here the
same sample! With some AHI-Modes you here the sample TWICE!
First left speaker, a few mikroseconds later in the right
 speaker.

AHI slows down my Quake, so I use the 8-bit internal Quake
 Audio-Driver, that's enough! ;)

hm, not blasted in anyway ;(

Did George Michael wiped his bishop here?

Installing Quake

1. The install script
Just click on the install-icon and wait for the
instructions. Hm, the icon looks like one of those I made..
 :)

Overall it is a simple install-script using the INSTALLER,
nothing special. A tool checks your serial-number and
placed the keyfile into your ID1 Directory. Cool... is that
the only protection? :)) (yes I know about the technical
 support!)

2. Catalog-Files
Hm.. something went wrong with the CATALOG-Files! Why does
clickBOOM searching so many peoples all over the world for
translating Quake's messages and forgot to include this
 "install-option" into the INSTALL_QUAKE Script?????????????
Hm, you must do that by hand renaming your related .CATALOG
file, for example GERMAN.CATALOG must be renamed to
QUAKE.CATALOG and so on... bad... in addition the german
catalog contains some ASCII-codes which the Quake-font cant
 handle...

3. Misc
Another little mistake is in the EXTRA-NI Directory: The
left icon has a wrong position. But that's only a visible
aspect. It's no problem to save it to the right position if
you move this directory to your hd. Or you download the
 FULL archive from this server.

Installed SPECIAL FORCES

yep, its Special Forces Info Screen

Network playing

1. TCP/IP
YEAH! That's it! Shoot da fuckings heads of ya
frag-partners. It's the only way to have real fun playing
Quake. But you need a very fast Internet-Connection to have
much performance, otherwise you'll never see who fragged
you! 28k8 Modem suxx really if you have a processor under
060! My friend owns a 28k8, but have PPC! So the laming
connection is not the problem. An other problem is that
there are so many QuakeII Server increasing and that's why
it's hard to find out gold "old" QuakeI Servers. So you
need to play with your friends and one them must be the
 server... null problemo! ;)))

2. Modem Play
We failed! But is not the latest QuakeI release? V1.08? Hm,
some PC Users I know failed too. So we decided to stop such
 testing.

Sound, Audio Tracks

1. Ingame Sounds
Wow! What a nice Athmosphere-Sounds. Some samples
remembering me to Duke Nukem.... (Zombie sounds)... so,
nothing to say about that. It's cool, it's great.

2. Audio Tracks
They are impressive! Especially if you hear them with your
Dolby Sourround Amplifier! They're blasting away your
Rear-Speakers and have suitable samples and basses!

 NO MORE TO SAY!

ArchMage Shot... dont kill him! ;)

AddOn's, Custom Levels
1. AddOn's
huhu... there is so much stuff available, every day I find
more... so, but was is with an AddOn CD from clickBoom? I
remember something that they want to release such a CD with
lots of stuff on it... but its the same question like with
the ppc-version-question. When? Or better: Ever?

I was successfull installing AddOns like REAPER BOTS or
Team Fortress or such shit.. :=)) its worth, try it out!

Team Fortress is one the famous AddOns. To win a "Fortress"
match you need to find and capture the flag of the second
team (blue or red) and got home with it. There are much
fortress-level available as standard-levels, so there will
be a lot fun for the future. Otherwise you need a lot of
people for such games, at least 4 (two for every team) is
 the minimum I think.

2. Custom Levels
Gosh, what a huge load available. I just own above 120 new
deathmatch-levels and ~30 new extra single levels. Both as
.BSP or .PAK Files. Tjooo, increased my telefon-bill to 300
 Marks last month.... orgs... :(

but its worth! do you want to life forever, dog? ;)

3. Rating this?
Hm, I rate the huge load of stuff with 9.5 points, but I
will not include this in the final calculation, because the
 AddOn's are THIRD PARTY Products!

Dead Grey-Alien? No, only bones...

TroubleShooting

1. Bugs
I don't know if this is a bug, but it can be:

I am using a 4x IDE CDDrive for AudioTracks connected
to the internal ide-adapter with ATAPI.DEVICE

Quake is running, the AudioTracks are playing from CD.

I open a saved game with LOAD A GAME and Quake starts
loading, but the CD is still playing Audio-Tracks.

Quake stops!! CD plays audio, nothing happens more...

to go on I have to stop the CD bei EJECTING, or
DISKCHANGE CD0:, after that Quake loads one of my
saved Games! With SCSI its no problem.

I do not count this effect with points. Maybe its
 a fault with my system.

Final Opinion
This is the history for the Amiga-Commnutiy. Commodore
died, Escom died, more others died and will dying. But
Amiga survived. But now it's time for you to die and your
friends. Blast away the head and body of ya
fragging-partner. Playing Quake alone is boring, if you
never played a deathmatch with your best friends, you'll
missed the fun, your heartattacks, your gloating, your
 hating.

I've played Quake several times, all levels and now have
above 140 extra levels installed. I like it, but the
performance with extra-levels is sometimes LAME. For
example if you play a level with nice extra-light-effects
and much enemies, Quake seems to be slideshow with sound
effects. That's because of the much data to calculate for
the FPU, otherwise the PPC-Version will handle that much
easier. (to clickBOOM: WHERE AND WHEN?). On the other hand
simple DeathMatch Levels are sometimes fast and running
unbelieveable. So, we decided to use only levels with not
so much effects. One of our favourite DeathMatch-Level is
UltraViolence which nice egyptian textures. Finally, my
 personal opinion is:

Quake raises the Amiga from the death!
