Lambda Gets First Screening - Article By Janne Siren

Janne Siren kindly gave Amiga Flame permission to publish this article about a preview of Lambda, a 3D space combat game like X-Wing and Wing Commander being shown to Amiga Users in Finland by author Mikko Kallinen, who was attending a Finnish Amiga Users Group meeting.

Mikko Kallinen, the author of Lambda, recently demonstrated the latest Lambda engine in a Finnish Amiga Users Group meeting. He had prepared a sample mission just for this meeting, making spectacular use of the new hyperdrive routines.

In this mission a friendly freighter arrives from hyperspace, being chased by three enemy fighters that warp out of hyperdrive a few moments later. These fighters engage the freighter and the mission was to stop them. The freighter and the fighters arrive in cinematic cut-scenes that really add to the atmosphere. While the freighter couldn't be destroyed yet, the enemy fighters did blow up after their shields ran out. Hitting the shields generated a colorful forcefield around the fighter - another brilliant effect in the revised game engine.

All in all, Lambda starts to look and feel very much like a game and the screenshots really pale in comparison to the real thing running. The 50 or so Finnish Amiga users attending the meeting really liked what they saw and the author was very busy answering their questions. No news concerning a publisher and Kallinen reminded us that the game still has a long way to go. Lambda was being demonstrated on a Cybervision PPC 68060/50 MHz system with Picasso IV and it was running quite smoothly on the 68k. Unfortunately no PowerPC version of the latest engine was available.
