In a shock announcement the Editor of CU Amiga Magazine, Tony Horgan informed the Amiga public that CU Amiga is to close with the October Issue being the last. CU Amiga and Amiga Format have been the flagship Amiga magazines in the UK for a long time now, the loss of CU Amiga is sure to have reverberations for the Amiga Market as a whole.
The reasons behind the closure are due to "the magazine's overall financial performance and the lack of prospects for any immediate or short term recovery". Tony Horgan explained in more detail that "CU Amiga is published by a major magazine publishing company (EMAP), and as a Publicly Limited Company (PLC) EMAP must show its shareholders that it is making their money work, which means they cannot publish magazines that make a loss".
This News has hit the wider Amiga Community hard with many expressing their sadness and disappointment on the Newgroups, Mailing Lists and e-mails have been sent to the Amiga Flame E-mail account. Amiga Flame would like to add it's thanks to CU Amiga for the work they have done informing the Amiga Community over the many years and would like to express it's disappointment that CU Amiga have been forced to close.
I have read over the last few days the sorrow of the Amiga Community both from companies and users, it is however essential that at this time the Amiga Community stays together and I would ask those who have supported CU Amiga, to show their support now for Amiga Format. In the last message I received from Andrew Korn, Deputy Editor of CU Amiga he expressed that "they (Amiga Format) will be able to pick up some of our old readers, be strengthened by it, and survive long enough for Amiga Inc to resurrect the platform".
We have experienced many bad times during the past and I am sure that we can work through this one, we are so close to getting the Next Generation of Amiga's with the Developer machines expected in November and the New Amiga expected for Christmas 1999. We must hold the line, till then.
