Ben says:  I have the sneaking suspicion that this CD is a sop to the record company. I don't think that DJ Shadow likes CDs at all, and they just put the album out on this format because they know it's the way to make the sales these days. The CD even comes in an LP-type case, no plastic here, you get a cardboard folder with a booklet of "sleeve notes" and the CD itself is in a little bag.

Anyway, minor detail. What's the album like? Well, unusually, I hadn't heard very much of it before buying it, apart from a sampler tape I got from somewhere with a couple of songs on it. I hadn't heard any of the album on the radio, although all the DJs were going on about how good an album it was, and so was the press.

What do I think of it? Hmm, well, I'm not sure. If you're in the mood for some hardcore dance rhythms where the drums are the most important instrument, then you'll get on well with this album. Personally, it gets to me after a bit, so I prefer to play this album in random play mode with a couple of others (they can still be dance-type music) on the old 3-CD turntable downstairs. It does have some great tracks on it though, like 'Midnight in a Perfect World' which are actually quite mellow in contrast.

So, a good album, but perhaps one best used as part of a compilation tape for a long car journey.
