FreeCopy V1.8 March 25, 1991 ============================== FreeCopy is unlike most copiers in that it does not actually copy disks. It actually removes the protection so disks can easily be backed up with almost any program, and in some cases be installed on your hard drive. NOTE: Even though the disk based protection is removed, you may have to fiddle to install them on the hard drive. This can sometimes be done by assigning the name of the disk to the hard drive, replacing df0: with dh0: in the program, or reassigning df0: to the hard drive (see Neuromancer script for example). Another good utility is the FMS program that lets you mount a file that looks like a floppy on your hard drive. It is public domain, but I cannot remember who wrote it. FreeCopy is Public Domain and nothing else. (Down with ShareWare!!!) How to Use ========== 1) Make a backup of your original disks using your favourite copy program and then run this program. 2) If you use the workbench copier make sure to rename the copy to the same name as the original. 3) Make sure the original is NOT in the drive when running this program. 4) Run FreeCopy. Pick the parameter that you want and click on the COPY button. (Use the scroll bar on the right side to view more parameters) 5) A window will come up prompting you to insert the copy you just made. FreeCopy will then search through the disk and remove the protection. FeedBack ======== If any of the parameters don't work for you, or if you have comments, send me E-mail at VBBS (403) 284-2048 (instant access, high speed lines) (403) 284-5625 Fido: 1:134/92 Internet: pringle@cpsc.ucalgary.ca I answer all mail, so if you don't get a reply, your message probably didn't get through. Be sure to include the VERSION NUMBER of the program you are trying to copy, if you can find it. Also, If you've figured out some of your own hacks, send them to me using Compare and I'll include them in the next release. Adios, Greg Pringle COMPARE: How to Send me Hacks ============================= Compare is a simple program I wrote that will compare original and deprotected files and tell you what the difference is between them. How to use: Compare > paramfile normfile hackedfile If paramfile isn't more than a screen or so, send it to me in a message at VBBS listed above, or to my net address. You will get full credit in the parameter list. Remember to include the EXACT file name including the EXACT path and disk name. Ex: GameDisk:progs/game HISTORY ======================= V1.8 -set window's font so FreeCopy will look nice under WB2.0 -added mavis beacon parameter -updated neuromancer script to work with 2.0 -how come only one parameter in the last eight months? Simple, the rental place in town here went out of business and I'm not about to buy tons of programs just so I can spend a few hours deprotecting them. There probably won't be a lot of updates because of this, and since I am working on other stuff now. V1.7 -F15 Strike Eagle II added -Dungeon master parameter fixed. V1.6 -Several new parameters -Gunship parameter fixed (Thanx to "The Bull" for reporting this) V1.5 -Search for the King Parameter -Three Stooges Parameter Fixed V1.4 -New Parameters V1.3 -Fixed major bug in V1.2 that caused some parameters to not work. -Added 18 Parameters -Packed with Turbo Imploder now (Better Compression) V1.2 -Improved disk access (takes seconds instead of minutes now). -Program checks for WB 2.0 color scheme (White switched with Black), and brings up graphics that look good under these colors. -Added Neuromancer parameter & parameter to modify Neuromancer to work on your hard drive, also Pool of Radiance Parameters. -Got rid of flicker when scrolling parameters at the expense of some color-coordination. -Reduced program size. -PowerPacked FreeCopy at maximum compression (I hope no one minds?) -Included program to compare original & deprotected files so you can send me your hacks (see above). V1.1 -Fixed Buck Rogers parameter (used to crash when trying to create characters) -Removed Dragon's Lair II parameters (does not work all the time I will work on it sometime) -Recompiled with optimising options and have reduced the amount of chip memory the program takes up.
