 \subsection{Copyright}

 Filer is a shareware program, all rights remain by the author. It may be
 spread on Public--Domain and Share\-ware disks as long as they are sold for
 a reasonable charge that is less than \$6. It may also be uploaded on
 INTERNET-FTP-servers. It's not allowed to use it in a commercial way without
 the permission of the author. The demo version may be used for an unlimited
 time, but some features of the registered version are missing in it.

 For \$20 a registered version can be bought from me. To get one, send me the
 money, an empty disk, an addressed letter and the return postage, then I will
 send you the newest version. Only the owner is allowed to use her or his
 registered version, it's strictly forbidden to spread it.

 Updates can be bought from me for \$5, too. The one who finds a bug in Filer
 first gets a free update. The addressed letter and the return postage are of
 course required for a update, too.

 This instruction isn't perfect, there are of course a lot of mistakes in it,
 but remember english is not my native language. My knowledge of \LaTeX \/ is
 incomplete so there may be some stylistic mistakes, too. But I hope that this
 instruction is sufficient to unterstand Filer's features and usage.

 My special regards go to Georg Heßmann for his fantastic Pas\TeX. I wouldn't
 have been able to finish this instruction without it.

 \subsection{Advantages to other File Managers}

 The biggest advantage (and also disadvantage ?) of Filer is that it's
 specially developed for OS 2.0. For this reason it uses a lot of the new
 functions of the operation system what leads to a smaller program and a
 better reliabillity. It's also possible to configure it in a very variable
 and easy way so it should fulfil everybody's wishes.

 \subsection{Soft-- and Hardwarerequirements}

 Filer works on all Amiga models with a minimum of 1 MB of RAM under OS 2.04
 (V37). All monitor types are supported.

 \subsection{Installation}

 The Installation of Filer is very easy. Just copy the program and the icon
 to any directory you want to have it. Additionally you can --- but you
 needn't --- copy the configuration file called ``Filer.RC'' to ``S:''.

 \subsection{Future Plans}

 The developement of Filer is not finished yet. Here some points that I want
 to add or fix :

 \item Multiselection of files using the mouse is missing.

 \item User defined gadgets would be nice.

 \item The internal text viewer should be improved.

 \item The internal IFF--loaders should be improved, too.

 \item A function to show the amount of space used in a directory simular to
  ``DU'' under Un$\ast$x.

 \item At some points a little bit more ``2.0'' design is required.

 What I \underline{guarantee} not to build in is the possibility to use Filer
 in a window on the workbench. It's not impossible, but I simply don't like
 that.

 \section{Usage}

 \subsection{The Directorywindows}

 The most important part of the user interface of Filer are the two large
 directorywindows at left and right margin of the screen. Inside them the
 directories, files and softlinks of the particular directory are shown.
 Directories and softlinks will be printed in black, if you haven't changed
 the color palette, files in white. Leftmost the name is displayed, right to
 it the protection flags, the entry type, the date of the last write access
 and rightmost the special informations. That's of course only true if you are
 using the default (refer to \ref{FORMAT}). Filer uses the following short
 form for the different entry types :

  \item DI: Directory

  \item HL: Hardlink (refering to a file or a directory)

  \item SL: Softlink

  \item FI: File

 \end{itemize}

 Special informations mean the note of a file (in quotes), if it has one, or
 the reference of a softlink (with leading ``$\mapsto$'').

 \subsection{The Errorrequester}

 If Filer needs to show any important information or error messages, it uses
 this requester. It has only one gadget labeled with ``OK'' and can be replied
 by selecting the gadget, pressing any key or deactivating the window.

 \subsection{The Decissionrequester}

 If Filer requires a decission from the user, this requester will appear. It
 contains two gadgets labeled with ``Yes'' and ``No''. A positive answer can
 be given by selecting the ``Yes'' gadget or pressing {\bf RETURN} or {\bf Y},
 a negative one by selecting the ``No'' gadget or pressing {\bf ESC} or
 {\bf N}.

 \subsection{The Protocol Window}

 \label{Protokoll}
 The Protocol Window appears whenever long--time--requiring operations should
 be done e.g. copying or deleting files. It's used to enable the user to watch
 the operation in a easy way. By selecting the ``Stop'' gadget at the bottom
 window or pressing the {\bf ESC} key you can break the operation. If the
 ``NOASK'' option is activated the window will immediately be closed after the
 operation is finished successfully else the program will wait for selecting
 the ``Ok'' gadget or pressing a key.

 \subsection{Usage of Patterns}

 If patterns are required in Filer the AmigaDOS format is used. So you'll have
 to use ``\#?'' instead of ``$\ast$''.

 \subsection{Doubleclicks}

 \label{Doppelklick}
 If the doubleclick option is switched on (refer to \ref{Options}) you can
 do different operations with a doubleclick.

 If you doubleclick on a subdirectroy it will be loaded in the particular
 directorywindow. A doubleclick on a entry in the devicewindow has a simular
 result the contents of the selected volume, physical or logical device is
 loaded in the activated directorywindow.

 If you doubleclick on a file Filer selects automatically a operation to do:

 \begin{itemize}

  \item Files for which a program was selected using the ``TOOL'' option
   (refer to \ref{Tool}) will be started with that program.

  \item The contens of archive files will be listed.

  \item IFF files will be loaded.

  \item Programs will be started.

  \item ASCII files will be displayed.

 \end{itemize}

 If Filer doesn't know what to do with a file it'll show an error requester.

 \subsection{The internal Textviewer}

 The internal text viewer will be used to display text files --- as long as
 you haven't select an external one with the ``VIEWER'' command (refer to
 \ref{VIEWER}) --- and for displaying hexadecimal dumps. It can be paused by
 pressing any key,the left or right mouse button and can be continued the same
 way. If the {\bf ESC} key is pressed the text viewer will abort.

 \subsection{The Directory-Gadgets}

 This gadgets are used to control the both directorywindows and the device
 window in the middle of the screen.

  \subsubsection{CD}

  After activating this gadget you can change to any subdirectory in one of
  the directoywindows or any device in the devicewindow by clicking once on
  it. If you click a second time on this gadget Filer will return to the
  normal mode.

  \subsubsection{/}

  If you selected this gadget Filer will read --- if it's possible --- the
  parent directory in the particular directorywindow.

 \subsubsection{Pattern}

  After selecting this gadget a requester will appear in which you can enter
  a pattern. After you have done all files matching to that pattern will be
  marked as selected.

  \subsubsection{all}

  All files will be marked as selected.

  \subsubsection{none}

  All files will be marked as unselected.

  \subsubsection{Left and Right Arrow}

  With these arrows you can copy the contens of one directoywindow into the
  other one.

  \subsubsection{Refresh}

  After selecting this gadget Filer will empty its directory cache, reread the
  directories of the two directorywindows and refresh the devicewindow. This
  is useful a directory was changed by another program or a new device was
  added with the ``Mount'' command.

 \subsection{The Command-Gadgets}

 The command gadgets are mostly named as the particular CLI commands. The
 ``Duplic.'' command acts simular to the ``Duplicate'' command of the old
 Workbench.

  \subsubsection{Copy}

  After selecting this gadget all selected files, directories and softlinks
  in the activated directorywindow will be copied --- what a surprise. This
  operation can be watched in the protocol window (refer to
   \ref{Protokoll}).\\
  {\bf IMPORTANT: Existing files are overwritten without any warning !}

  If a softlink is copied a new softlink with the same reference is created,
  search any file manager which has this facility !

  Use the configuration file to specify whether protection flags, date and
  filenote should be copied, too (refer to \ref{Options}).

  \subsubsection{Delete}

  After selecting this gadget all selected files, directories and softlinks in
  the activated directorywindow will be deleted. If the ``NOASK'' option
  (refer to \ref{Options}) is switched on a security request will be done
  before Filer erases anything. If Filer finds a delete-protected file it will
  ask the user to decide whether to continue or abort.

  \subsubsection{Rename}

  If you select this gadget all selected files, directories and softlinks in
  the activated directorywindow can be renamed. For every selected entry a
  requester appears in which the name can be changed. After finishing the
  input with {\bf RETURN} or selecting the ``OK'' gadget the file will be
  renamed. If you select ``Skip'' Filer will skip this file and continue with
  the next one, selecting the ``Abort'' gadget will abort the operation.

  \subsubsection{MakeDir}

  With this command you can create a new directory. After selecting the gadget
  a requester will prompt for the new directory's name. If you finish the
  input by pressing {\bf RETURN} or by selecting the ``Create'' gadget Filer
  will try to create the directory. If it succeeds it will ask whether you
  wish an icon to be created, too. If you select the ``Abort'' gadget Filer
  will do nothing.

  \subsubsection{Protect}

  With this command you can change the protection flags of a lot of files.
  After selecting the gadget a requester appears in which you can decide which
  protection flags should be changed. For every flag a ``+'' gadget and a
  ``-'' gadget exists. If the ``+'' gadget is activated the flag will be set
  if the ``-'' gadget is activated it will be cleard. If none of them is
  selected the flag will stay unchanged. If you select the ``Ok'' gadget Filer
  will start changing the protection flags, if you select ``Abort'' it will do
  nothing.

  \subsubsection{Move}

  After selecting this gadget all selected files, directories and softlinks
  in the activated directorywindow will be moved. This operation can be
  watched in the protocol window (refer to \ref{Protokoll}).\\
  {\bf IMPORTANT: Existing files are overwritten without any warning !}

  \subsubsection{Duplicate}

  After selecting this gadget for all selected files, directories and
  softlinks in the activated directorywindow a requester appears in which you
  can enter a name for a new copy of the particular entry. After finishing the
  input with {\bf RETURN} or selecting the ``Ok'' gadget Filer will create a
  copy of the selected file with the name you have entered. If you select
  ``Skip'' Filer will skip this file and continue with the next one, selecting
  the ``Abort'' gadget will abort the operation.

  \subsubsection{Type}

  If you select this gadget all selected files will be displayed using the
  internal text viewer. If you have selected an external one using the
  ``VIEWER'' command (refer to \ref{VIEWER}) this one will be used.

  \subsubsection{Hex Dump}

  If you select this gadget all selected files will be displayed as a
  hexadecimal dump using the internal text viewer.

  \subsubsection{Edit}

  After selecting this gadget you can edit all selected files using the editor
  set up with the ``EDITOR'' command (refer to \ref{EDITOR}).

  \subsubsection{Info}

  With this function the protection flags and filenotes of files and
  directories can be change. A requester appears for every file and directory
  in which you may change the particular values. If you select ``Save'' the
  values will be saved, if you select ``Next'' Filer will continue with the
  next file. Selecting ``Abort'' will as usal abort the operation.

  \subsubsection{MakeLink}

  This functions is used to create hard-- and softlinks. After selecting the
  gadget Filer will ask for the new link's name in a requester. If you finish
  the input with {\bf RETURN} or select ``Hard'' Filer will create a hardlink,
  if you select ``Soft'' it will create a softlink. Selecting ``Abort'' will
  as usal abort the operation.

  After selecting the link's type a file requester will appear to select the
  file or directory the link shell refer to.

  \subsubsection{Format}

  With this function any trackdisk--like device using any structure can be
  formated. That means if once a MSDOS filesystem will exists which fully
  supports OS 2.0 Filer will be able to create MS-DOS disks.

  After clicking on the gadgat the ``Format'' window will be opened. At the
  left margin you will see a list of the avaible devices, at the right top
  corner the information box. Before any operation can be started you have got
  to select a device, a describtion of the device will appear in the info box.
  With the ``Verify'' gadget you can switch on and off verify --- even while
  formating. The ``FFS'' gadget is used to select if it's possible whether the
  new disk should be initialized with normal (OFS) or fast filesystem (FFS).
  You are now able to select one of the following operation:

  \begin{itemize}

  \item ``Format'':\\
   The media will be completly physicallly formated, all data will be erased
   and can \underline{not} be recovered. That's why a security check will be
   done before beginning. And if the media has a capacity of more than 1780
   blocks (size of disk) a second security check will appear to prevent you
   from erasing your harddisk. The state of the operation can be watched by
   looking at the status window (under the info box). The more it get's filled
   the more the operation is completed.

  \item ``Erase'':\\
   A new volume directory will be created on the media. Because this operation
   is nearly as dangerous as formating the same security checks will be done.

  \item ``Install'':\\
   If it's possible a bootblock will be written on the media. Filer will
   create a OS 2.0 bootblock unknown to some virus detectors. So if you get
   a virus warning simply ignore it.

  \item ``Exit'':\\
   Select this gadget to close the ``Format'' window.

  \end{itemize}

  This function is non functional in the demo version.

  \subsubsection{Relabel}

  With this function you can change the volume name of the media which
  contains the activated directory. You can edit the volume name in a
  requester which will appear. After finishing the input with {\bf RETURN} or
  selecting the ``Ok'' gadget Filer will relabel the media. If you select the
  ``Abort'' gadget the volume name will not be changed.

  \subsubsection{Run}

  After selecting this gadget all selected files in the activated
  directoywindow will be started. This will of course only work if the file
  is a program or a batchfile if not an error message will appear. The output
  of the programs will be shown in a CLI window. After a program has finished
  Filer will request you to press {\bf RETURN}. If you click on the
  closegadget the operation will be aborted.

  \subsubsection{Load IFF}

  If you select this gadget Filer's IFF routines will try to load all selected
  files in the activated directorywindow. The type of the particular IFF file
  will be detected automatically, Filer has internal loaders for pictures and
  sounds for other types you will need to set up a loader using the ``IFFDEF''
  command (refer to \ref{IFF}). If Filer finds an unknown IFF type or even an
  non--IFF file it will print out an error message. The operation can be
  watched in the protocol window (refer to \ref{Protokoll}).

  \subsubsection{Add}

  This function is used to create or extend archive files. If you want to
  create a new archive just select the files and directories to put in it,
  then click on the ``Add'' gadget. Filer will create a requester asking you
  for the new archive's name. Its type will be read from the used extension.

  If you want to add some files to an existing archive select the archive file
  \underline{first} then select the files and directories to add and finally
  click on the ``Add'' gadget.

  \subsubsection{Extract}

  With this function you can extract archive files. After clicking on the
  gadget a requester will appear asking for the patterns of the files to be
  extracted\footnote{Because Filer doesn't do the pattern matching at this
  point the supported patterns will relay on the used archive program.}. If
  you finish the input with {\bf RETURN} or select the ``Ok'' gadget all
  selected files in the activated directorywindow will be extracted. This will
  of course only work if all files are in archive formats known to Filer. If
  one file is not an error requester will appear. The operation can be watched
  in a CLI window.

  \subsubsection{List}

  With this function you can list the contents of archive files. After
  clicking on the gadget all files in the activated directoywindow will be
  listed. If a file is not in one of the recognized archive formats (refer to
  \ref{ARCDEF})an error requester will appear. The output of the particular
  archive program can be watched in a CLI window. If one archive has been
  listed Filer will request you to press {\bf RETURN}. If you click on the
  closegadget the operation will be aborted.

  \subsubsection{Search}

  With this function you can search for files, directories and softlinks.
  Select first all directories to search in and click on the gadget then. A
  requester will appear requesting you to enter the search patterns. After
  finishing the input with return or selecting the ``Search'' gadget Filer
  will start to search, the results can be seen in the protocol window (refer
  to \ref{Protokoll}). Selecting ``Abort'' will as usal abort the operation.

  \subsubsection{Quit}

  By selecting this gadget you can leave Filer after a security request --- as
  long as you haven't switch on the ``NOASK'' option (refer to \ref{Options}).
  If the ``STAY'' option is switch on(refer to \ref{Options}) Filer will stay
  in memory waiting for its reactivation.

 \subsection{The Menus}

 \subsubsection{Project}

 \begin{itemize}

  \item {\bf About}:\\
   The copyright requester will appear again.

  \item {\bf Clean up Memory}:\\
   Filer clears its directory cache. All not actually opened devices and
   libraries will be removed from memory, too.

  \item {\bf Workbench}:\\
   The Workbench screen will be opened or closed --- as long as no alien
   windows are opened on it. If the menu item is selected the Workbench
   screen is opened.

  \item {\bf Quit}:\\
   This menu item acts exactly as the ``Quit'' gadget.

  \item {\bf Quit \& Die}:\\
   Use this menu item to leave Filer if the ``STAY'' option is switch on
   (refer to \ref{Options}).

 \end{itemize}

 \subsubsection{Defaults}

 With the items in this menu you are able to modify Filer's configuration at
 runtime. To make this configuration permanant you've go to save it.

   With this menu item you can switch on and of the ``STAY'' option (refer to
   \ref{Options}).

  \item {\bf Silent}:\\
   With this menu item you can switch on and of the ``NOASK'' option (refer to
   \ref{Options}).

  \item {\bf Extend Path}:\\
   With this menu item you can switch on and of the ``EXTEND'' option (refer
   to \ref{Options}).

  \item {\bf Cache}:\\
   With this menu item you can switch on and of the ``CACHE'' option (refer to
   \ref{Options}).

  \item {\bf Doubleclick}:\\
   With this menu item you can switch on and of the ``DOUBLECLICK'' option
   (refer to \ref{Options}).

  \item {\bf Deselect}:\\
   With this menu item you can switch on and of the ``DESELECT'' option (refer
   to \ref{Options}).

   After selecting this menu item a color requester appears. You can change
   the colors of Filer's screen with it.

   If you select this menu item a string requester to change the displayformat
   of the directorywindows appears. This acts like the ``FORMAT'' command in
   the configuration file (refer to \ref{FORMAT}).

  \item {\bf Editor}:\\
   After selecting this menu item the name of the Editor used for the ``Edit''
   gadget can be changed using a requester.  This is the same as the ``Edit''
   command in the configuration file (refer to \ref{EDITOR}).

  \item {\bf Load}:\\
   After selecting this menu item the configuration file ``S:Filer.RC'' will
   be read again. Errors in it will be shown in the protocol window (refer to
   \ref{Protokoll}).

  \item {\bf Save}:\\
   After selecting this menu item the configuration file will be saved to
   ``S:Filer.RC''. If this operation is successful a requester will tell you
   that.

 \section{The Configurationfile}

 \subsection{The Format}

 The configuration file is a text file so you can edit it with your favourite
 text editor. It will be loaded automatically if Filer is started, errors will
 be shown in a window.

 The configuration file is builded by configuration commands one per line,
 comment lines start with a ``\#''. The recognization of the commands is not
 case sensetive.

 If a parameter is a command call in which filenames have got to be inserted
 this places are marked with a ``\%s''. The search path can't be used if a
 program is called from Filer, so use the complete path !

 \subsection{The Commands}

  \subsubsection{COLOR}

  With the ``COLOR'' command the colors for Filer's screen can be set. It has
  two arguments the number of the color (0 -- 3) and the color value as a
  hexadecimal number e.g. {\bf COLOR 2,FFF}.

  \subsubsection{SET}

  \label{Options}
  With the ``SET'' command various options can be switch on and off. The
  syntax is {\bf SET {\it OPTION} ON} or {\bf SET {\it OPTION} off} e.g.
  {\bf SET CACHE ON}.

  \begin{enumerate}

   \item ``EXTEND'':\\
    If this option is switched on Filer will extend all pathnames used for the
    directoywindows e.g. ``DEVS:Prints'' will be extended to
    ``Workbench2.0:Devs/Printers''.\\
    This option is on for default.

   \item ``CACHE'':\\
    With this command the directory cache can be switch on and off. Some
    filesystems e.g. MessyDOS don't cooperate with Filer's cache very well.
    In this case the cache can be switched off.\\
    This option is on for default\footnote{The cache of the demo version can
    hold only two directories.}.

   \item ``DOUBLECLICK'':\\
    If this option is switched on doubleclicks can be used to do a lot of
    things (refer to \ref{Doppelklick}).\\
    This option is on for default.

   \item ``COPYFLAGS'', ``COPYDATE'' and ``COPYNOTE'':\\
    These options are used to decide which file informations should be copied.
    ``COPYDATE'' is for the date, ``COPYFLAGS'' for the protection flags and
    ``COPYNOTE'' for the filenote.\\
    These options are all switch on for default.

   \item ``NOASK'':\\
    If this option is switched on some security request will be switch off,
    e.g. Filer will not ask you before deleting something.\\
    This option is off for default.

   \item ``STAY'':\\
    If this option is switched on Filer stays resident if you quit it --- if
    you select ``Quit \& Die'' Filer will of course quit really. Filer will
    now close all windos and free all allocated memory. By pressing LEFT-AMIGA
    ``F'' or starting Filer again it can be reactivated.\\
    This option is off for default.

   \item ``DESELECT'':\\
    If this option is switched on all files, directories and softlinks will be
    marked as deselected before they are put in the cache. Otherwise they will
    be selected if the directory is taken from the cache.\\
    This option is on for default.

  \end{enumerate}

  \subsubsection{EDITOR}

  \label{EDITOR}
  With the ``EDITOR'' command you can select the editor which is used by the
  ``EDIT'' function e.g. {\bf EDITOR ``C:MEmacs \%s}.\\
  For default ``C:Ed'' will be used.

  \subsubsection{FORMAT}

  \label{FORMAT}
  With the ``FORMAT'' command you can set up the format Filer uses to show
  files in the directorywindows. The single characters have the following
  meaning:

  \begin{itemize}

   \item {\em ``N''}: name of the file or directory

   \item {\em ``L''}: length of the file

   \item {\em ``P''}: protection flags

   \item {\em ``T''}: entrytype (directory, file, softlink or hardlink)

   \item {\em ``D''}: date of the last change

   \item {\em ``X''}: special information

 \end{itemize}

  Other characters will be ignored.

  \subsubsection{VIEWER}

  \label{VIEWER}
  With the ``VIEWER'' command you can select a external textfile viewer to
  display files with e.g. {\bf VIEWER ``SYS:Utilities/More \%s''}.\\
  For default the internal text viewer will be used.

  \subsubsection{FONT}

  With the ``FONT'' command you can select a font for Filer's screen e.g.
  {\bf FONT ``clean''}. The font must be 8x8 pixels tall and fixed.

  \subsubsection{ARCDEF}

  The most complicated command is without any doubt ``ARCDEF''. With this
  command nearly every archiver should be able to used by Filer. For ``Zoo'',
  ``LHArc'', the new ``LHA''--format and for FLib belonging to Pas\TeX \/ are
  included in the suplied configuration file. If you want to use the original
  ``LHArc'' instead of ``LZ'' you will have got to change it.\\  The ``ARCDEF'' command has the following arguments:

  \begin{itemize}

   \item the pattern to recognize the archive files with e.g. ``\#?.LZH''

   \item the calling syntax to add files to an archive, two filenames will be
    inserted:

    \begin{itemize}

     \item a name of a textfile containing a list of the files to be added
     \item the name of the archive file

    \end{itemize}
    e.g. ``LHArc -a -x -i\%s a \%s''

   \item the calling syntax to list the contents of an archive file\\
    e.g. ``LHArc -a -x l \%s''

   \item the calling syntax to extract files from an archivem two arguments
    will be inserted:

    \begin{itemize}

     \item the name of the archive file

     \item the pattern of the files to be extracted

    \end{itemize}

    e.g. ``LHArc -a -x x \%s \%s''

   \end{itemize}

  All together:\\
  {\bf ARCDEF ``\#?.LZH'',``LHArc -a -x -i\%s a \%s'',``LHArc -a -x l \%s'',
   ``LHArc -a -m -x x \%s \%s''.}

  The ``ADD'' function is non functional in the demo version.

  \subsubsection{IFFDEF}

  With the ``IFFDEF'' command you can set up an additionally IFF load program.
  Filer itself can only load ``ILBM'' and ``8SVX'' files. So if you want the
  ``ANIM'' format to be shown with ShowANIM\footnote{ShowANIM ist \copyright
  \/ SPARTA Inc. .} use the following command:\\
  {\bf IFFDEF ``ANIM'',``ShowANIM \%s''}\\
  The first argument is the IFF identifer, it must have a length of four
  characters and must be written in uppercase. The second argument is the
  calling syntax for the program to load the file with.

  \subsubsection{TOOL}

  \label{Tool}
  With the ``TOOL'' command you can select a program to thread files matching
  a pattern if you double click on them. E.g. If you add
  {\bf TOOL ``\#?.dvi'',``TeX:bin/ShowDVI \%s''} to you configuration file
  ShowDVI will called if you doubeclick on a file ending with ``.DVI''.

  This function is non functional in the demo version.
