VAXterm document for version 2.4. Sun Apr 22 18:50:55 1990 What is VAXterm? VAXterm is very simple terminal emulator for professional usage. I wrote this to make it possible for me to use VAX computers with my Amiga. However I found out that I'm not the only Amiga owner who has access to VAX-computers. The user interface is desinged for people who are used to using traditional terminal enviroment. There are no pull down menus. Suggested usage VAXterm can be used with any host computer which takes advantage from VT220-features. VMS-orientation refers to ASCII-file transfer mechanism. Transferring mechanism is implemented by means of VMS commands. To use this special file transferring method, you must have error control in your modem. Without error control, this program haven't got much use anyway. Running VAXterm The VAXterm executable must be located to the same directory, where the VAXterm setup-files are. VAXterm fonts-directory must also be there. ASCII-file transferring During file transfer terminal characteristics in host computer must have ReadSync set and PastThru unset (VMS dictionary). It's the easy part to set these characteristics on your terminal, but if you use as a host some node that is connected with slow network connection (DECnet thru modem) to the node you first log in, sending files directly from VAXterm may be impossible. This problem can be solved by sending files to the node connected to modem directly or by means of terminal server and then copying them to the final destination. When transferring files, which may contain more than 80 characters per line, the terminl width at the host computer should be set accordingly. To set the suitable characteristics for your terminal in host the computer, you can use function key F4. When F4 is pressed twice, commands from the file HOST.SETUP will be sent to host computer. Host computer must be ready to accept DCL-command from the terminal whenever terminal setup or file transfer features are used. The keyboard All keyboards are based on VT220 keyboard. Unlike fonts, none of the keyboards are loaded from the separate files. Keyboards are much the same as Digital's similarly named keyboards. Some keys required for special purposes, such as C programming, are added to some of the keyboards. Accent keys are fully supported. VAXterm does not support character composing, but if required character is not found directly from the keyboard, you will probably find it by using ALT-key as a qualifier. When the printer will be activated for the first time, file PRINTER.SETUP will be sent to printer to modify the default printer settings. The commands for the host set-up will be read from the HOST.SETUP file. File transfers will work only when the terminal emulator is logged into the VMS-system. The system must be ready to accept DCL-command from the terminal. Serial-port parameters Parameters for serial-port will be taken from intuition user preferences. Before using VAXterm you should set them to correct values using preferences tool. Known bugs If the file transfer is attempted to nonexisting directory or using inapropriate terminal settings at the host computer, VAXterm will be most likely fatally jammed. Usually VAXterm will continue normally after double clicking the left mouse button. The author As you might have noticed, VAXterm doesn't have much to offer for common Amiga user. If you're not such common user, I hope you like this one.
