Box 87 NAPIER Phone (070) 356-195 Space Ranger (Mastertronic $43.99) Requires Joystick This is a real cute game. You take the role of an interplanetary ranger and your job is to save the alien critters on three different planets from the evil Mogdanians. The game can be controlled from the keyboard but it is much easier with a joystick. You are equiped with a gun (fire button) to defend yourself from the Mogdanians and their armed slaves and a combined net/transporter (spacebar)to rescue the endangered lifeforms. There are many different kinds of critters and hostiles and you may need to play a couple of games to familiarize yourself with which ones you have to rescue and which ones you can shoot. The first planet is a desert world with dinosaur type critters being chased by enemy aliens that look like 4 hands stuck together. The second planet is snow and ice with some very cute hopping critters and some enemy elephants that throw exploding snowballs at you. The third planet is tropical and features bouncing monkeys and flying horses. After that it is back to the first planet with some new critters and deadlier enemies. All the creatures are well animated and the background scrolls in 3 layers like the old moon buggy arcade game.Nice backgound music with a different tune for each planet but if you do get bored with it it can be turned off. The only complaint I have about the game is the lack of a high-score table. My current high score is 2930000 This game is a welcome change from the usual shoot-em-ups and was very popular at the Games Sig meeting on March 13th. Garrison (Rainbow Arts $79.99) Requires Joystick(s) This is a clone of the coin-op game Gauntlet. It is a combination arcade-adventure and shoot-em-up. There are 5 different characters to choose from each having different abilties in speed, hand-to-hand combat, magic, armour, shot-speed, & fireower. While it can be played as a single player game it is better with 2 players (you'll need 2 joysticks) and is the best co-operative multi-player game out for any computer. The documentation supplied is not very good (1 sheet of paper with German on one side and a poor English translation on the other) but the 'attract mode' makes up for that by telling you what you are supposed to do. There are 128 levels in the game so it will keep you interested longer than most arcade games The game comes on 2 disks but the first is only needed to boot the game, then you put in the data disk. Both disks are write-protected. Graphics and sound are up to current coin-op arcade machine standards and ahead of or equal to all other Amiga games. Ross Deeley 9th April,'88
