Apple Announces QuickTime 2.1 for Windows

Support for 32-bit, Continued Support for 16-bit Operating Systems
Make QuickTime the Standard for Cross-Platform Multimedia

CUPERTINO, California--June 27, 1995--Apple Computer, Inc. today
announced a new version of Apple QuickTime for Windows, the
software that brings multimedia capabilities to personal computers
and consumer electronics devices. The newest Windows version,
QuickTime 2.1 for Windows, will take full advantage of the latest
32-bit operating systems including Windows NT and the upcoming
Windows 95. For developers, this means that the same multimedia
content can be delivered for both of these operating systems.

Because QuickTime works across multiple platforms, developers can
create titles once on the Macintosh and deliver them to many
different types of computers or consumer electronics devices. This
latest QuickTime release reinforces Apple's multimedia leadership
and continued commitment to giving developers access to the
largest markets of consumers. Industry research firm Dataquest
recently reported that 63 percent of developers use the Apple
Macintosh to create their multimedia content.

"With QuickTime, consumers can enjoy the latest multimedia titles
without being forced to purchase new operating systems or
additional hardware. Developers also benefit, because they do not
have to commit to developing for a single platform. Using
QuickTime, they can create feature-rich titles for the largest
possible consumer audience," said Steve Franzese, director of
Multimedia Business Development at Apple Computer.

"With the additional features and expanded operating systems
support of this new version of QuickTime, Apple continues its
leadership in giving developers like Broderbund great tools and
technology for creating exciting cross-platform titles," said M.
W. Mantle, vice president of Engineering/CTO at Broderbund
Software, Inc., a leading multimedia developer.

New Features
QuickTime 2.1 for Windows delivers the following new features:

-- Win32 compatibility. Apple will continue to support 16-bit
operating systems such as Windows 3.1 while expanding support for
32-bit operating systems.
-- high performance, direct-to-hardware graphics support
-- a new installer, designed for easier, more fool-proof
installation. The installer is especially helpful for users who
buy QuickTime via an on-line service. It is easily configured and
ensures that installation is complete.
-- a new Control Panel that automatically scans the system to
determine the components of the system configuration, identify
potential problems or system conflicts and suggest optimizations.

System Requirements
QuickTime 2.1 for Windows requires a PC-compatible computer
running Windows 3.1, Windows NT or Windows 95.

Developer Availability/Pricing
QuickTime 2.1 for Windows is expected to be available in Fall
1995. Developer seeding is already in progress. Developers can
license the software free of charge for redistribution with
applications, titles and media clip libraries that support
QuickTime. The QuickTime 2.1 for Windows Software Developers Kit is expected
to be available in Fall 1995.

Distribution for End-Users
The QuickTime 2.1 for Windows run-time software is expected to be
available in Fall 1995 for US$9.95. QuickTime 2.1 for Windows is
expected to be available on-line in The Store on ZiffNet. ZiffNet
members can type GO STORE. QuickTime 2.1 for Windows is also
expected to be available on the Macintosh Users Group (MAUG) on
CompuServe. To access, users can type GO QTIME. Entertainment
Drive on CompuServe is also expected to incorporate QuickTime 2.1
into the GO EDRIVE Movie Viewer, a click-and-play Windows
application that allows users to watch QuickTime movies.
CompuServe members can type GO VIEWER. In addition, QuickTime 2.1 for Windows
is expected to be available at
http://quicktime.apple.com on QuickTime OnLine, Apple's World Wide Web
server.
