Version 1.2 of the Apple Media Kit Now Available; Supports QuickTime
2.0, Creates Power Macintosh Run-time Applications

#C21
CANNES, France (Milia Exhibition)--January 13,1995--Apple Computer,
Inc. announced that version 1.2 of the Apple Media Kit, the company's
object-oriented, cross-platform multimedia authoring tool, is now
available. The Kit--comprised of the Apple Media Tool for authors,
designers and educators and the Apple Media Tool Programming
Environment for programmers--will now support Apple QuickTime 2.0,
and will enable creation of projects that run natively on Apple Power
Macintosh computers, in addition to Apple Macintosh computers and
Microsoft Windows -based PCs. Apple is also announcing a reduced
price and retail distribution for the Apple Media Tool, and bundling
of the required subset of the Macintosh Programmer's Workshop (MPW )
with the Programming Environment.
"In keeping with Apple's commitment to help multimedia developers
succeed, this new version of the Apple Media Kit provides support for
the highest quality multimedia creation and delivery across many
platforms," said Ralph Rogers, product line manager, Media Authoring
Tools, Apple Computer, Inc. "The reduced price, broader retail
distribution and advanced support for the Apple Media Tool, along
with MPW bundled with the Programming Environment, makes the Apple
Media Kit even more accessible and affordable for a wide variety of
end users and developers."
Developers are already using the Apple Media Tool and the Programming
Environment to produce highly innovative multimedia projects,
including interactive multimedia catalogs and rock music titles, some
of the first interactive on-line advertising and among the most
sophisticated networked kiosks. (For examples of how multimedia
developers are using the Apple Media Kit, please see the attached
addendum.)
The Apple Media Kit has received many awards including MacUser "Eddy"
Editor's Choice Award for "Best New Multimedia Product of 1993," and
was nominated again in 1994. The Kit was rated four stars out of
five in both MacWeek and MacUser magazine reviews in 1994.

Supports QuickTime 2.0, Creates Power Macintosh Run-times
QuickTime is Apple's software that brings multimedia capabilities to
personal computers and consumer electronic devices. The Apple Media
Kit's support for QuickTime 2.0 makes it possible for developers to
create multimedia projects with much higher quality video and
animation and makes it easier to create, edit, synchronize music with
video and playback music on computers without understanding MIDI
technology.
Once created on the Macintosh, Apple Media Kit projects can be
converted to run in Macintosh, Power Macintosh and Windows-based
environments at the click of a button. This saves developers
valuable time and effort, because projects can be authored once on a
Macintosh computer and delivered to many platforms.

The Apple Media Tool will now, for the first time, be available in
all Apple software distribution channels, including dealers and
retail software outlets. The reduced price for the Apple Media Tool
is US$599 SRP, the Apple Media Tool Programming Environment is US$995
SRP and the Apple Media Kit, which includes both the Tool and the
Programming Environment, is US$1,195 SRP. Special higher education

MPW Bundled
#C21

The Apple Media Tool Programming Environment now includes the
required subset of MPW bundled at no additional charge. The
Programming Environment works in conjunction with the MPW Shell for
debugging multimedia projects, allowing programmers, for example, to
inspect objects, step through code and set breakpoints while a
project is running. MPW is conveniently preconfigured and ready to
use, saving valuable development time.

The Apple Media Kit version 1.2 will feature a number of demos and
samples designed to save time and stimulate creativity in developing
multimedia titles. A number of top developers have contributed
"shareware" multimedia project samples and MPW scripts. Several
vendors have submitted sample media collections as well.

Addendum: Examples of Projects Developed Using the Apple Media Kit
Higher Education

#C10
- Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT)
School of Photographic Arts and Sciences
Professor Douglas Rea
#C21

When Douglas Rea and his students decided it was time to augment the
highly acclaimed print magazine E.s.p.r.i.t. with its first
interactive multimedia CD-ROM component, CD-ESPRIT, they chose the
Apple Media Kit to make it happen. With very little programming
experience, but a plethora of creative individuals, producers of CD-
ESPRIT needed to find an authoring tool to create a cross-platform
CD-ROM that would be very easy to learn and use, but
would enable students to create subtle, sophisticated multimedia
effects and interactivity.

- Interactive Educational CD-ROM
Pilgrim New Media
Chip Canty
Cambridge, Massachusetts
#C21

Pilgrim's first product, Her Heritage: A Biographical Encyclopedia of
Famous American Women, lets users interactively explore the lives of
more than 1,000 famous women. The CD-ROM has already earned
favorable reviews, recently receiving four stars in a PC Magazine
article. Pilgrim New Media needed a cross-platform multimedia
authoring tool that would save valuable development time by enabling
team members to work in parallel. Because the project had to
incorporate thousands of screens, Pilgrim also needed to be able to
display content--re-purposed text, photos and film clips--in real
time from a custom database. The Apple Media Kit met Pilgrim's
needs.

- On-line Interactive Advertising
Diosa Corporation
Bruce Mewhinney
#C21

Diosa Corporation needed an easy-to-use multimedia development tool
to create interactive on-line advertising and editorials for a new
yachting forum on Apple's e-World on-line service. The Apple Media
Kit provides a sophisticated, object-oriented tool that enabled Diosa
to simultaneously create ads for both Macintosh computers and
Windows-based PCs.

-Interactive Multimedia Buyer's Guide
Residential Design Corporation (RDC) Interactive Media
Terry Beaubois
Palo Alto, California
#C21

In developing an interactive multimedia catalog for home building
products, RDC Interactive Media needed a cross-platform multimedia
development tool that would minimize development time and maximize
the use of space on a CD-ROM--one that would enable RDC to easily
build links to a large database. The Apple Media Kit provided the
solution.
