I don't guaranty that DFA works in the expected way. If you find any bugs I please you to send me a bug report (see below for details). DFA? DFA! DFA is NOT just another address programm. You can look up the addresses quite fast; support for email addresses is given as well. Of course - there are already some similar pieces of software which do nearly the same - well nearly! DFA was programmed under version 2.0 of the latest AMIGA operation system! This means you NEED OS2.0 to use the programm. If you only have OS1.3 (or below) you won't get anything but the guru - sorry. All I can say to users, which don't use OS2.0 up to now is: Upgrade at once! DFA is using OS2.0. This implements that you can use all the new features that the AMIGA is supporting now. You not only get an application icon, the typical 2.0 look and feel but better, you can do all operations with the keyboard! DFA is a commodity, so you can pop it up by holding down some keys, the "hotkey". Sounds interesting - well, then continue reading... Installation If you want to use DFA, you have to copy some files to their "right" places: DFA, DFA.info Should be copied into a directory of your search path, e.g. c:. If you want DFA to be started automatically during the booting phase, you can copy both files into the SYS:WBStartup drawer. adr.file This file contains one (my) address. If you want, copy it into the same drawer as DFA and DFA.info. It will be loaded, while DFA is starting up. If you don't supply any adr.file, the list of addresses will be empty. Well - that's it. Now you can use either the shell to start DFA manually by typing "DFA" or "run DFA >NIL: . The text info fields Below the listview there are four text gadgets that show the telephone number and up to three email entries of the current address. FULL Shows the complete address incl. street, city, comment, etc. (see "Full address"). EDIT If you have selected an address earlier, you now can change it in another window (see "Edit" for details). NEW "New" does nearly the same as "Edit", however all the entries are empty and you can enter a NEW address. KILL If you want to delete an address, select "Kill". To save your addresses from being deleted by mistake, a confirmation requester will pop up before really deleting the address entry. SEARCH In an additional window you can specify some search items (see "Search" below) SEARCH NEXT You can only select "Search next", if you selected "Search" before. If you did so, the next entry which fits your needs will become current, under the condition that it exists. PRINT In the "print window", which appears after you have selected "Print", you can change the outfit of the printout (see "Print" below). SORT By selecting "Sort", the addresses are sorted by name, first name and city (in this order). DIAL This point makes sense only for users that have modems connected to their computer. If you do, you can have your computer dial the number of the current address entry. It is possible to enter more than one phone number. In this case, however, it is strictly recommended to seperate the different phone numbers by commas. If you don't , the whole entry is seen as one. After starting the dialing, a requester pops up and shows the entry, which is dialed. You may abort (Abort) the dialing at any time or skip the current number (Skip). The modem settings can't be changed in the unregistered version of DFA and are set to 1200 baud, init string "ATZ" and predial string "ATDP", which should suit the most Hayes compatible modems. Besides the listview there are four buttons, which can be used to change the selection of addresses. Selected entries are marked by a ">" in the first column. All Selects all addresses. By name Another window pops up and you can enter (a part of) a string. Note that patterns as "#?", "?", "*" etc. are NOT supported yet. The search is case sensitive! After you entered the string and selected "Ok" all the address entries which contain the search string are selected. Clear All selected entries are deselected. Jump to If possible, the next marked entry becomes the current one. if no further marked entry exists, the first address in the list is shown, no matter if it is selected or not. Show full "Show full" shows the current address (did you really expect this?) including all the information like street, city, ZIP, and so on. Below the text fields, there is a "panel" conaining six gadgets. With these gadgets you can move through the address list: First Moves to the first entry Last Moves to the last entry Prev. Sel. Moves to the previous selected entry Next Sel. Moves to the next selected entry Prev. Moves to the previous entry Next Moves to the next entry Edit If a current entry exists, which means an entry below the list appears, the edit window opens and you can change the given entries. By holding down the right AMIGA key and hiting the respective letter you can jump directly to any field. To jump to the next field, you can use or , to jump to the previous field just use or . The string edit functions "Erase" and "Undo" which can normaly be reached by and respectively, can now only be used by holding down the key too. New "New" gives you the same window as "Edit" did. The only difference is that you can enter a NEW address. Search Searching special entries can be directed by the following gadgets: Search for Here you can enter the search string. Ignore case If "Ignore case" is "checked", the search is not case sensitive, otherwise it is. Fields to search The "radio buttons" can be used to select, which fields are to be searched through. Search "Search" starts the seach. If an entry fits, the address list scrolls to that entry. Cancel "Cancel" cancels the search. The address list is updated, which means that the current entry is pushed to the top. Print In the "print window" all functions, which control the printout of your addresses are collected: Print You may choose between all the selected or the active address(es). If there is an active item, it is shown in the "Active item" field. Print to Either can you print your addresses to the printer ("PRT:"), which should be the "normal" way, or you can write them to a file. If you select "Print to file", the settings below don't take effect. Print style If "NLQ" is checked, the printout will appear in "near letter quality", if your printer supports this, otherwise the printer will use draft mode. With "Condensed" checked, you will get a condensed printout. Print form There are five different "forms" to print you addresses: Short address list Full address list Phonelist Mailing labels Address cards Print If you chose a file for your printout, a file requester pops up and you can select the prefered filename. Notice that this file will not be compatible to the file in which the addresses are stored. If you overwrite the address file, DFA will not load this file! This mode was only implemented to make it possible to export the addresses to other applications. If the output is done to the printer, a progress indicator pops up and informs you about the printing. You can cancel the printing after every complete address. If you are printing the active item only no indicator will be shown. Cancel Use "Cancel" to return to the main window. The Menus of DFA About The "About" window shows some interesting (?) informations about the author and his program: the version number, the copyright notice, my address (incl. email address), the shareware stuff and the GadToolsBox copyright notice. Load (Shortcut: L) By using "Load" you can "import" a new address file. That means that the old ones are deleted! After you selected "Load" the filerequester appears and you can enter the desired filename. Please notice that you may only load files which have the proper format - files that were saved by DFA! If you selected a wrong file, the addresses can't be loaded. The former addresses are deleted in any case! Append (Shortcut: A) "Append" does the same as "Load" with the difference that existing addresses are not deleted! In this way you can join 2 address files to a single one. Nevertheless - be careful - if you select the same file twice, the address entries will be "doubled", which might not be the desired choice:-) Save (Shortcut: S) When using "Save" you can save (wow!) the existing addresses. The name used is either the default filename (adr.file), or the name of the address file, which you may have loaded just before Save as... "Save as..." also saves your addresses - this time however you can choose a filename using the supplied file requester! This may be useful, if you use different files to store your addresses (e.g. one for your private ones and one for your business addresses). Save as default If you select "Save as default", the addresses are saved using IN ANY CASE the default filename (adr.file). Preferences (Shortcut: P) You can only use this menu item, if you register! See below for details... Quit (Shortcut: Q) If you want to end the DFA application, select "Quit". Please notice that in this case DFA is removed completely, so you can't pop it up using the hotkey any more! Miscelleaneous DFA is font sensitiv DFA adapts itself completely to the fonts you selected in the font preferences program of the workbench! This means that the window will become bigger, if you select a font larger that 8 points! If the window becomes too large to fit into the screen, DFA uses the default topaz font. More than one DFA simultaneously? It is not possible to run more than one DFA application at the same time! If you try, the second DFA quits at once and the first one pops up and informs you that you can't start more than one DFA simultaneously. The window positions DFA remembers the positions of all its windows. This means that the windows reopen on the same place you closed them! Saving the window positions is not possible. If you want to do this, you have to register - sorry. The window positions are stored relatively to the DFA main window! This means, if you move the main window, the subwindows reopen at the same place as before considering the space between the main window and the subwindow. The application icon The application icon can only be created, if the DFA.info file exists. This means that even if you start DFA only from the CLI, you should not delete the DFA.info file! Registration Before you register, you can test DFA and see if it fits your needs. In the unregistered version of DFA, however, you can't set the preferences. You have to use the preset defaults! The tool types can be changed in any case! As long as you don't register, you have to use the file "adr.file" in the current directory to store your addresses. You will always get an application icon and it will always appear at the same place on the workbench. The modem settings are set to the default values as well (see above for details). The window positions are NOT saved in the unregistered version! In spite of these restrictions it should be possible to test DFA. As soon as you use DFA regularly you HAVE TO register! The are two kinds of registration: I. DM 15,- (Germany) DM 20,- (US$ 15,-) (elsewhere) You'll get a socalled keyfile, which activates the functions, which are disabled in the unregistered version as well as the manual (done using LaTeX) on the disc as *.dvi file. This means that you can print it out by yourself, if you have TeX (e.g. PasTeX). The disc contains a current release of DFA as well. As soon as another version of DFA will be done, which contains SIGNIFICANT changes towards the former release, you'll get an UPDATE. The shareware fee contains ONE FREE UPDATE. If you would like to get another one, please send me a return envelope and an empty disc. II. DM 20,- (Germany) DM 25,- (US$ 20,-) (elsewhere) You'll get the same as discribed above, but with an additional PRINTED manual. This may be useful, if you don't have a printer and/or TeX. Please give me 2-4 weeks time to return the registered DFA. Mail will reach me at any of the addresses below, however you should select the home address for the month of March, April, August, September, October and the study address for all the other months. Bug reports The development of DFA already took quite a lot of time to do. Furthermore Kai Iske has done his part to make DFA what it is today. He got lots of my alpha and beta versions to test them. Well - it was not always fun:-) He also pushed me to include commodity support and the edit hooks, thus to be implemented in the version 1.0 already. Unfortunately all this doesn't mean that DFA has no more bugs in it (sorry). Surely there are some of them hidden anywhere in the dephths of the program. So I ask you to report any bugs you discover.
