*********************************** AM/FM *********************************** Title : N/A Producers : Attraction 17 Bit No : 2495 Musician : Howard Wilsher No Disks : 1 No Tracks : 3 It's the disk with no name, and only three pieces of music on it as well. Is it any good ? Let's find out shall we..... We all Know This - Is the name of the first offering, although I didn't seem to recognise it. The track kicks off with some string chords in a minor key, and is gradually joined by some sparse metallic sounding drum beats. The first problem arises when the melody is introduced, it's sounds like a mix between an electric piano, and a synth-string, and is in a very bright sounding major key. The resulting clash in keys makes the song sound out of tune. I can't imagine how the composer didn't notice this as he was writing this. There's a short part of the track that is in-tune, and that's when the string chord sample is dropped to make way for a bass line, which is joined by some faster drums, and the track began to sound a bit like the in-game music in a shoot-em-up; not necesarily a bad thing, and certainly the highlight of the song. After the short in-tune interlude, we're taken back to the original out-of-tune melody for the rest of the track. This is a song where very little actually happens, it sounds like each pattern is played, and then repeated a few times just for good measure, the net result of course is a very dull tune. Rating 3 Angel - Oh no, it's that string chord again, and that means another out-of-tune song. But to be fair this song wouldn't have been much good if the string chord was in the right key any way. I think this was meant to be some sort of dance song, it's got an electro-style beat, and completely overuses an orchestrial hit sample. But then again, if it was supposed to be a dance tune, then why did it have the strings going all the way through, and why did it use a bell as the melody instruments. Once again, not a lot happens, the patterns repeat, it's all a bit dull again. Rating 2 Attraction - The title track, surely this one was going to be better. A better start anyway; this time leading in with a choral/string mix sample, and playing a resonable intro, setting the track up ready for the drums to come in. In came the drums, the same electro beat as 'Angel', except this time they actually fitted in. It was all going well up to this point, but then it all went wrong, the choral/string sample was dropped, and replaced with..can you guess ? That's right, the minor string chord sample, and the song died at that point. Yet again nothing happens in terms of melody, and there's way too much repitition. This song suffers particularily badly because it drags on for a mind-numbing 8 minutes and 44 seconds. Rating 3 Composistions : Rather uninspiring to say the least, there just just a few key elements missing from the songs : Melody (quite a crucial one), any sense of tempo, and harmony. The two most prominent problems are the off key string sample, and the repitition, add it to the fact that nothing really happens during the songs, and all you're left with a three bad tracks that all sound much the same. Rating 2 Samples : The samples were quite clear, but they lacked presence. To explain further, it sounded as if they were being played with the low-pass filter (i.e the power light) on, which they weren't. So they could have been much better; however they didn't have any clicks, buzzes, or any nasty noises mixed in, so one out of two isn't bad. Rating 5 Presentation : Just a simple static screen, with the usual F-keys to select each piece. It all worked O.K, so no complaints there. I wasn't a great fan of the colour scheme though; magenta and cyan reminded me of the CGA cards you find in the low-end PCs, and I don't want to be reminded of something as disstasteful as a PC when I'm on my Amiga, but that's just me.....Rating 5 AM/FM Rating : I don't get any pleasure in slagging someone else's work off, but this is really bad. The songs are very boring, and would make you drop off to sleep, if it wasn't for the fact that the out-of-tune string sample will hurt your ears too much. It's a simple as that really, don't get this disk, it's just completely useless. Rating 3 *********************************** AM/FM ***********************************
