The Gathering 1993    
                                                       

The  Gathering  is an annual event arranged by two computer groups called 'The
Crusaders' and 'Exile'.  Last year was the first time this event was arranged,
and  the  arrangers  managed to gather more than 2000 computer freaks from all
over  the World, for a five day party.  This year we expect around 3000 people
to turn up.

Some  of you may have little or no knowledge of what goes on at these types of
computer  gatherings.   The  main goal is to gather as many computer people as
possible,  each members of a computer group or independents, and let them show
everyone  else  what they and their machines are capable of.  For many this is
also  a  social  event where you can meet up with people you've only spoken to
over  the phone, through mail or through a computer network.  In short - enjoy
the company of other people with the same interests as yourself.

Among  all  the  different  activities we have on the agenda, the most popular
ones  are the competitions for the best computer demos, best computer musician
and  best computer graphician.  For the readers of this magazine, the computer
musician competition is probably the most exciting one.

In  the  computer  musician  competiton  everyone,  no  matter  how  brilliant
musicians  they are (though having some knowledge of how music is written does
improve  your chances of winning), can enter with what is known as a 'module'.
A  module  consists  of  a  musical  score  and samples that are playable on a
standard  Amiga  computer  using  a  suitable  module player.  This means that
modules  from  ANY  computer  can  be entered, as long as it is playable on an
Amiga.

All  genres  of music will compete in the same competition, i.e.  there are no
categories  for  each style of music.  Contestants can choose if the module is
to  be played in mono or stereo.  Though most modules sound better when played
in  mono,  some  musicians  like  to  use  the  stereo mode for effects.  Each
competing  module  will  be  played  for  3.0 minutes.  If more than a certain
number  of  modules  are  entered  for  the  competition, a jury consisting of
non-competing  computer musicians will pick out a portion of the modules for a
final.

The prizes in the computer musician competition are:

   For 1st place: Equipment at a value of around $1500
   For 2nd place: Equipment at a value of around $500
   For 3rd place: Equipment at a value of around $200

Unfortunately  we had no time to set up a more detailed list of prizes, but we
can promise that you will not be disapointed.  But as they say - the important
thing is not to win loads of expencive equipment, but to compete.

What is probably the most exciting thing of all is that MTV Europe, along with
a  great  number of other representatives of the media has been invited to The
Gathering  1993.   For  some  of  you  this  might  mean  that your break as a
hard-working amateur musician has finally come!
