I have discovered that all 3000's are subject to a preventable type of damage that has been showing up in a serious form in the older production units. THIS IS TO WARN YOU that the battery for the clock and batmem, located on the left side of the motherboard, after 3 to 5 years of age, begins to output corrosive material which will erode the motherboard and nearby components. The problem often will show up as flakey video or failure of the de-interlacer circuit, but the battery is in close proximity to many components, and other problems are also likely. THIS WILL kill your 3000, if you do not act soon enough. The battery should be changed NOW on all 3000's that have never had this done. If you examine your board with a magnifier and light, and see no sign of crud on or near the battery, you have a little time; if you do see anything, act immediately, or face a repair soon. The same problem will probably show up on 4000's in a year or two. On the 2000 motherboard, the battery is more isolated, but can still cause problems. YOU IGNORE THIS AT A REAL RISK. The non-powersupply side; left facing the front; same side as the chip memory; about half-way from the front and back. The battery is barrel shaped, about .75 inch in length, .5 inch in diameter. Mine has a big + printed near one end and "3.6V" also printed on it along with some other numbers that I can't remember. Mine's also blue but that probably could be different. This is just a guess, but removing it shouldn't cause the loss of anything but the time/date. I tried removing it but it seems rather stuck. It looks like mine has some corrosion on the + side and that might be holding it in. I do not know yet where to get more. It is located on the left edge of the PCB if you are facing the front of the computer and looks like a blue miniature oil drum about3/4" diameter. In the 4000, they are usually red. The latest 4000 went to a silver disk. --- EXCELSIOR! As long as it is the same voltage. Shouldn't run more then 4-6 bucks for the battery. If your comfortable with a soldering iron then you could probably do it yourslef. I've changed them in a 2000 and a 500 clock memory board before with no problem. But, i'm a tech for a large consumer electronics corp and soldering is something I do almost every day...
