People were asked to vote for their favourite public domain or shareware utilities and desktop enhancers. The aim was to provide a list of the most popular utilities available today, which would be forwarded to Amiga Technology for possible inclusion with future Amiga hardware packs. This would add value to the Amiga computer bundles cheaply, and provide an extra level of usability from the word go. In bundling shareware programs with new Amigas, we would also see more support for the authors of these programs, and more development on the programs themselves . The Amigas get better,the programs get better, the users get more satisfied. Everyone wins! The list itself will also be of use to newbies, and those on limited FTP accounts. Such people should be able to look at the list, and perhaps decide with a bit more confidence on what to download. I had a reasonably good response to the survey, with 36 voters in total, and a wide range of utilities voted for (129 in total). A number of utilities stood above the rest, and were obviously very popular and in widespread use. By setting a minimum level of 5 votes, I extracted a suite of 17 programs. This group of programs would be ideal for use on most amigas, as together they enhance a number of aspects of the Workbench. Although MagicWorkBench beat NewIcons in the popularity stakes, there seems to be widespread support for both types, and users are probably advised to have a look at both, before deciding on any one (although I have heard of people using both!). I use MagicWorkBench by the way, in case you were wondering. Also, MUI has been identified as very popular. Much contraversy has surrounded this program, but as it has been voted popular it has of course been included here. I recognise that Amiga Technology have stated that they will not be incorporating MUI into future AmigaDOS enhancements, but it has been included for completeness.
