I'm trying to decide between Syquest and Bernoulli for storage and backup
for my A3000. Has anybody used Bernoulli? What would you suggest?

Thanks for any help.

I have the Bernoulli Transportable 150. Yowser!! I love it. It's fast and
very reliable. The Syquest we have at the school I help at has had a number
of platter problems. Syquest rates their disks to survive a 30 inch drop.
Bernoulli rates theirs at "a toss out of a car doing 60mph!"

Syquest has the the advantage of being the "early man" on the scene so most
print and video service bureaus would have one available. However, I've
heard that many of these places are adding Bernoulli very quickly. Also,
the Bernoulli is already very common in the PC world, so the service bureaus
may already have one.

If you plan to stay totally in house, don't pass up the Bernoulli. It's
faster, much much much much safer and in the end, I think, cheaper than
Syquest (Iomega just chopped their prices). 150 meg carts can easily cost
under $100.

Even Newtek seems to have bought them by the truck loads.

Be aware of one slight problem. For some reason the Toaster software can
keep the Bernoulli from spinning back up after the 30 minute spindown. It
seems to be a Newtek problem that they will eventually solve. In the mean
time we use a small program to keep the drive from spinning down every 30
minutes. If you don't use the Toaster, this is of no concern to you.

Yes, it is excellent. I have been using it as my Macintosh emulation
harddrive. I just have to have the unfortunate luck of owning the two only
boards that does not work yet: A4091 and Emplant Deluxe. (Under Amiga that
is)

Actually, Bernoulli came out first, if I could recall correctly.
They were just overpriced dinosaurs then.

I got mine for around 79-89 dollars (150 MB) and the drive for
about 500-600 dollars.

Newtek Have indicated that the next Toaster will be in a different
format (probably the floppys keep dying on toaster 3.0 users). Maybe,
they are considering removable devices.

What is this program called? I will be needing it as soon as
my SCSI controller problems are solved.

I haven't used either with an Amiga, but at a place I used to work we used a lot
of removable media. The Bernoulli is good and reliable but quite slow, and in
this country is quite pricey. The Syquest has less of a reputation for
reliability, although this shouldn't be a problem with the sort of load home use
produces. It is also cheaper and quicker (don't know about the latest
Bernoulli's though). Both are available with Amiga installation instructions.

The major factor is probably what you want to be compatible with - most PC's use
Bernoulli, whereas most Amiga people use Syquest. From what you say this isn't
an issue, but worth noting. Other options to consider are QIC tape streamers
(very Unix compatible), flopticals and the 128Mb rewritable-optical.

Oops. I forgot to say "early man" on the scene for Amiga supported
removable media. True, Bernoullis have been around a looong time, but they
did not support Amigas as early on as Syquest.

Thanks for that clarification.

Actually, there was Bernoulli support for the Amiga back in the days of the
A1000. Before I ever saw a Syquest. First time I saw a Bernoulli on an Amiga
was at a business show. Dynamax was showing off Bernoulli drives for the Mac
and across from them was Comspec Communications. Comspec had an A1000 with
their SA1000 SCSI controller. They asked to borrow a Bernoulli from Dynamax
and had the thing running by mid-afternoon.

Only thing that made Syquests popular was the fact they they were 1/4 the
price of a Bernoulli at the time they came out. The original Bernoulli 20
meg was really slow too (no caching like the 45 and higher).

On the subject of whether to go with Syquest or Bernoulli (sp?):

I've use a Squest for about two years. I bought it cause it was the best
priced removable drive I could find. I have had MANY problems with it.
It works, it's never completely failed me, but I get lots of crashes, I
got no instructions with it, so I don't think I have formated the carts
properly, I haven't been able to get any help from the manufacturer, and
it sometimes slower, much slower, than I wish it was (were?). If I had
it to do over again, I might avoid Syquest.

I've had a Syquest (88) for about three years and haven't had any problems.
I had it first on my A500 with an old (circa 1988) Supra controller, and
then on my A3000. I get read/writes of about 800-900 KB/S which is faster
than the 40 meg Quantum which came with the A3000.

I just dumped my RDB from a properly formatted 88 Meg Syquest drive, if you
have an 88, maybe you can check against this and see what's different:

(Note that the mask ends in "c". While Commodore suggests using "e", many
people have cleared up drive problems by changing to "c".)

NOT true. I do it all the time. What HD controller are you using?
Perhaps IT is having the problem. It most definitely is NOT the drive. It
may be something wrong with your setup. DO call the Iomega support number.
From their voice mail select the Mac/Amiga support division. Ask for Tony.
He really knows the Amiga (he uses one all the time) and the Bernoulli
drives.

I re-itterate, the Amiga WILL boot up fine regardless of whether there is a
cartridge in the Bernoulli drive. If it doesn't for you, it's not the
drive's fault.

Go with Bernoulli. Bernoulli offers TRUE AMIGA support-> their
tech department knows Amiga stuff.

The other thing, there was a slash in price of up to about 40%
in the Bernoulli stuff...

I could get my external 150 meg Bernoulli box for less than the 105
external Syquest!

I'll get it next Wedsnday, if I am not pleased, I'll guarantee
to complain :-)
