The graphics are just *AWESOME*, it actually looks MUCH better than most arcade machines out there!!! I did notice a few things: The sound is amazing, cd-quality. It can play almost full-motion video in about a quarter screen (you DO notice A LOT the compression in some parts of the picture). The games actually DO seem to run at 24 frames per second with brush-mapping, shading, and all that, BUT *sometimes* the action slows a little bit (but noticiable), specially when there's a lot going on. I presume though that as programming become better at the machine this will dissapear. There are ABSOLUTELLY no games for sale, all you can buy is the machine which comes pack with the driving game Crash and Burn, and a preview of an amazing 3D Space game. The guys at the store (Lechmere, here in the U.S. said the games are "coming soon") The fold-out poster that came with it only had pictures of about 8 games, all the other ones, and some of those 8 are still "under development". I stayed closed to the machine for about 45 minutes, and these are my opinions of people's reactions: One guy just opened his mouth, pointed to the screen, and looked at me in amazement (he had the Mortal Combat cartridge in his hand). The machine REALLY wows people!!! Some people just kept pushing the buttons, they didn't know the machine was cd-based and so they had to wait for access times. The waits were VERY shrt though, no more than 10 seconds in the worst case I would say. BUT it all boiled down to onw thing: after playing, ALL of them took a look at the price sticker, 700 dollars. This was the time when some of them left the place, others said "gee, it ain't worthy man", or "forget it, too expensive!!!", or "cool, but man, too much", and stuff like that. I [ersonally did not see ONE person who was seriously thinking about buying one. As a matter of fact, they only had 5 to show/sell; they've been there for four (4) days according to one of the guys that work there. Conclussions: Awesome machine, BUT the price is WAY too high. As is, is already doomed. The CD-32, with the right advertising and marketting CAN be the machine of 1993, specially if the price drops to under 300 for the christmas season. There's NO software for the 3DO, regardless of what 3DO, Electronic Arts, or the Video Games magazines say. Most "developers" are just waiting to see if the machine sells first. Other notes: The CD-I was also there, but NOBODY pays attention to it, it just looks too lame. The graphics move like on an old apple computer, just with more colors, the animation is HORRIBLE, the programs SUCK and are hard to use and/or control. And the control pad included was just not meant to be... I see the same, old programs everytime I go there, this machine is REALLY dead, and this is NOT speculation, it REALLY *IS* dead. Well, hope that entertain some of you. It's coming out very soon for the CD-i, and it will certainly impress a lot of people. The animation is pretty reasonable, I think. The main problem with the CD-i is the price.. too damn much! But there is a cheapo version now out (399 pounds UK) which is slightly better, but the games are still pretty expensive. I agree with you that the remote control thing is horrible, but there is now a joypad out, which is a lot better, if fragile, I have seen one broken plastic stick already... As far as the 'same old programs' goes, there is not a lot of stuff out for it (I will probably be shot for saying this!) but some of it is really good (Link is a good platform game, with very nice graphics, they look hand-painted). The CD-i is NOT dead yet, it will be the FIRST with an FMV cart, and so the FIRST with FMV games, which are really, really excellent. Remember 7th Guest? The game that needed a hellishly fast PC and CD-rom to run? Well, that's coming out on CD-i, along with some other ones (I don't have a list at the moment, sorry). I do know one thing, though.. there is still a lot of money being put into CD-i, so it has not been written off yet. The interesting competition will be between amiga CD and CD-i, as both C= and Philips seem to masters of overpricing and under-advertising their (otherwise very good) products. I want to see the prices of Amiga CD + FMV compared to CD-i + FMV, it could get real interesting. I guess it all comes down to advertising at the end of the day, and how many games come out for the systems. If C= can get some ads in before Xmas (I know Philips will have a big ad campaign) and then get some really, really good games out for CD32, which should not be too hard, just port the best Amiga games across, then C= really will clean up totally. You're totally right about 3DO, it is very impressive but waaaaaay too expensive. Right, that's it.. I have played on one at a local store (panasonic's REAL 3d0). While it costs $699 (street price right now), it's price will be dropping rapidly when the other models start coming out. Now, I'm a faithful amiga user, and I want to get a CD32, but I do not see any way that it can excel in the US. 3D0 beat C= to the US market with a 32 bit machine, and (no flames, I LOVE amiga) the 3D0 has better hardware than CD32. CD32 may be able to survive, but it will take a miracle for it to do well against a company like 3D0. The game that came with the machine (Crash & Burn) is better than most arcade games, and features some FMV parts where the characters speak about their cars and their racing. Some of the demos for other games looked even more amazing. Imagine StarFox with 24 bit graphics, fractal landscapes, etc. Also remember that some of the original designers of the Amiga designed some of the hardware for 3D0... SNES and Sega are dead. They will not last six months against 3D0. Scott This weekend I also got a chance to play with a 3D0 being sold at Lechmere. I watched the crowd and noticed that the kids really liked playing the included game but when the parents saw the $700 price tag the snorted and walked away. The technology is fun but it is not at a price point that a consumer is willing to pay. The other thing to note is there is only ONE game available for the 3D0 at this time. On the same disk as the game were some demos of upcoming games but they all had a release date of Spring '94. In one of the demos they were running a very pretty full screen animation that was a tongue in cheek parady of the masterpiece theatre intro. Although the individual frames were very nice the play back was abysmal! The animation would run for a second then jitter as more frames were loaded then run smooth for another second, then jitter again. This continued through the entire animation. It appears that the standard chips are unable to play a full screen 24 bit anim from disk in real time. Does the 3D0 have FMV ability out of the box or is that an add on card that fits in the side AV expansion slot? The 3D0 has stunning 24 bit graphics and increadibly fast texture maping ability. If they can get more titles out and get the price below $450 they might do alright but I think they are going to be a flop this Christmas season. CD32 has a chance since it is 1/2 the cost and will shortly have many titles available. Too bad they can't do their marketing before Christmas. Yeah, CD-i is not a games machine, it would be insane to compare it to a SNES or SEGA-CD, but it might catch on for Video-CD, I wonder if the CD-32 FMV and the CD-i FMV are compatable, ie. could you make a video-cd that would play on both of them. I doubt that this is the case (hey, remember Betamax?) so it will be interesting to see if C= manage to pick up film / video titles to put onto CD. Now that would help sell the CD32, surely.. you could buy the kids a games machine, get a CD player, and a Video-CD in one box, AND for 550 pounds (thats assuming the FMV is 150, which is reasonable) after all, every little bit helps, right? >Also, the FMV card is great, BUT people also like Fighting games, Shut'm'up ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Not me! I was watching DS9 on Sky-1 (European satellite channel), and lo and behold, during the commercial break it appeared. Just there. On the screen. The Amiga CD^32, alongside an advert depicting the strange alien creation they had at LIVE'93 (consumer electronics fair held in London last month). The voice-over was saying things like - 'so fast', and 'so many colours'. The alien was playing some games, and a couple of scientist poeple walked up behind it. Then it blew up (best thing for it in my opinion). Well, at least it was an advert, placed in the right place. Over all not a bad effort. C= may be learning the error of their ways! >that they will ride on the back of Philips' CD-i >advertising. The same must go for 3DO adverts.
