This section describes how to download, install and upgrade BackWeb on your computer.

To download BackWeb from a Web site offering the BackWeb Client, such as the BackWeb Web site:
| 1. | Make sure your computer meets the system requirements. |
| 2. | Click the appropriate hot spot to download the software. |
| 3. | When prompted, specify a directory on your hard disk to place the initial loader bwget.exe. Double-click bwget.exe and a Welcome dialog box will request your confirmation for the BackWeb Smart Loader to start downloading. A Downloading Components window listing the download components will appear at the top left of the screen; only components that are newer than the ones installed on your computer will be downloaded. After download is complete, a Ready To Install dialog box will request confirmation to install BackWeb on your computer. |
Double-click the bwget.exe file to download and install BackWeb on your computer (refer to Downloading BackWeb).
During installation you are asked to select between Polite Agent and HTTP. HTTP is only necessary if you are behind a corporate Firewall or are using AOL to connect to the Internet. Otherwise, choose Polite Agent.
Following installation, BackWeb is launched and you are automatically taken through BackWeb Quick Setup. The BackWeb Quick Setup allows you to customize BackWeb to meet your specific needs.
To start receiving news, entertainment, or software updates, subscribe to the BackWeb channels of your choice.
The BackWeb Quick Setup takes you through the following steps:
 | Specify which types of InfoPaks should be played automatically. |
| Register to channels of your choice from the channel directory in the BackWeb web site. |
| Specify the default amount of disk space per channel that you wish to allow for the storage of InfoPaks. |
| If you are using a modem for your BackWeb Internet connection, you can specify a dial-up schedule from the Connection tab of the Global Options dialog box accessed from the Preferences pull-down menu. |
Once BackWeb is downloaded and installed on your PC, it automatically runs at system startup. The BackWeb icon appears on the right hand side of the taskbar (notification area).
You can control and modify many other BackWeb options from the BackWeb window. To do so, double click the BackWeb icon, or right-click it and choose Open BackWeb Window from the pop-up menu.
To uninstall BackWeb:
| 1. | Click the Start button in the taskbar. |
| 2. | In the Start menu, choose Settings. |
| 3. | Click the Control Panel. |
| 4. | Click the Add/Remove Programs. |
| 5. | Choose BackWeb from the list. |
| 6. | Click on the Add/Remove button to uninstall BackWeb. |
BackWeb upgrades are downloaded from the BackWeb channel automatically as InfoFlashes. The upgrade InfoFlash displays and allows you to upgrade BackWeb immediately or to wait until a more convenient time. If you specify that you wish to upgrade, your BackWeb software is upgraded and automatically begins a new session.
If the upgrade is not performed using the InfoFlash, when you open the BackWeb window, a message box displays. You are asked if you want to upgrade immediately. If you specify that you want to upgrade, BackWeb is upgraded and automatically begins a new session. Otherwise, the above step is repeated every time you open the BackWeb window until you upgrade or delete the upgrade InfoFlash.
