FLIP-A-CARD (Gottlieb, 1970) Playfield: Ed Krynsky Art: Art Stenholm VP version Released November 28, 2001 Background Ah, a classic Art Stenholm scene of teenage girls having fun. He had a string of glasses with girls (and their male friends) just being girls, having fun, hanging out, always fashionable...many in this league include "College Queens", "Skipper" (a wild seaside scene), and this game's "twin", "Spin-A-Card". This one is a visual feast, with all the trappings of Big Sister's Room: stuffed animals, varsity pennants, and the all-important telephone. But the one quirk of the backglass is not easily visible, and therefore negates the duality of the game's name: the strawberry blonde is flipping cards into a large green hat, only we don't see the hat too well. It's obscured by the handy card indicator that blankets the bottom of the screen. About the only other person that doesn't care that you can't see the hat is her friend, contentedly strumming her guitar, hair done up in curlers. Never thought you'd see anyone in curlers on a pinball backglass, eh? First time for everything. Just part of Gottlieb's sly youth movement which successfully shifted the momentum from Roy Parker's showgirlesque beauties to Stenholm's girls next door. The board is a sly collection of targets and rollovers tied to thirteen playing cards, including a few out of easy reach of the flippers. But never fear...the ten-stop roto (from "Spin Wheel") comes to the rescue, ready to spot a random card from 5 to Ace when the hole is hit or an outlane is made. Completing all 13 cards alternates two rollovers for Special and awards a Special when an Ace is made on a spin. (One note: the display picture shows Ball 4 lit up...I made an eleventh hour decision to make it a 3-ball game. It can all be done quite easily in 3 balls.)   PLAYFIELD ITEMS Top Rollovers: Jack (100), Queen (100), King (300), Jack (100), Queen (100), King (300). Completing Jack, Queen and King lights 100 Point Bumper. 9 Target (to the left of the left yellow bumper): 50 points. The sling behind it scores 1 point. 8 Target (between 3rd and 4th rollovers): 50 points each. 7 Target (to the right of the right yellow bumper): 50 points. Yellow Bumpers: Score 10 each.. Red Bumper: 10 points, 100 when lit by completing Jack-Queen-King. 10 Rollover (left): 50 points. 6 Rollover: 50 points. Ace Rollover: 500 points and Special when lit. . 5-4-3-2 Targets (left to right): 50 points each. 4-3 targets are backed by slings scoring 10 points each. Spin Hole: Spins the lights on the 10 digit card display on the playfield. Cards from 5-Ace are represented. Whatever card it stops on it spots, and scores the card value (50 for 5 through 10, 100 for Jack or Queen, 300 for King, 500 for Ace). When all 13 cards are made, making an Ace in this manner scores a Special. Outlanes: Spins the lights as described above. Return Lane: 50 points, plus Special when lit. Bottom Slingshots: 10 points each.. GAME RULES Hitting any lit rollover or target will spot one of the 13 playing cards on the backglass. Hitting the hole or a lit rollover (they're always lit on a 3-ball game) will spin the center card display, spot the card it stops on, and scores the associated points (50 for 2-10, 100 for Jack or Queen, 300 for King, or 500 for Ace). Completing all 13 cards lights the Ace rollover and the right return lane alternately for Special, and awards a Special when the Ace is made on the spin wheel.
