SHADOWLAND 1.0 (a Civilization II scenario by Shay Yates Roberts)
******************************************************************

SUMMARY:

Prepare yourself for a new experience!

Plunge your civilization into an ancient world filled with
Demons and Dragon Riders. If your culture can survive long
enough to reach the modern era, you can even create SEAL Teams
and Cyborgs!

New terrain, such as "impact craters", and new military structures,
such as the "naval fortress", are guaranteed to shake up time-worn
strategies, adding new spice to your play.

SHADOWLAND is a scenario which plays out as a full-length game.
Because the level of difficulty is set by the player, it is
suitable for everyone from amateur to pro.

The following information is KEY. Read it. It will open the door
to a strange new land... a dangerous land... SHADOWLAND!

1.0 INSTALLATION:

  1.1 To Install SHADOWLAND:

BEFORE YOU BEGIN THE INSTALL: check to make sure you've
downloaded the latest update to Civilization II. To find
out your version, start a normal game, then click on "Game"
in the top menu and select "Game Options". Look at the top
of this window for the version number of your game. You need
version 1.11 or higher to run SHADOWLAND. If you have an
older version, download the latest update. As of 08/28/96,
          the update was available at:
	  http://www.microprose.com/civII/whatsnew.html

You must also be using DOS 6.0+ in order for the scenario
          installer to function properly.

       a. If you have not already done so, place SHADOW.EXE in your
your main civ directory (probably CIV2), and run the program.
       b. Run SHA-IN.BAT from your main civ directory.
       c. Double click on your Civ II icon to start play, and
choose "Begin Scenario". Select SHADOW.SCN from the list
of available scenarios in your main civ directory.
       d. WARNING: Once you have installed SHADOWLAND, you MUST NOT
begin play by selecting "Start a New Game". You must
select "Begin Scenario". If you want to start a new,
regular game, you must uninstall first (see below).

  1.2 To Uninstall SHADOWLAND:

       a. Run SHA-OUT.BAT from your main civ directory. This will
allow you to play normal civ games (Start a New Game), but
leave you the option of re-installing SHADOWLAND at a later
time. Please note: you MUST run SHA-OUT.BAT if you wish to
play a regular game of Civilization (meaning ANYTHING other
than the SHADOWLAND scenario). Do not be alarmed if you see
a "missing batch file" message when you run SHA-OUT.BAT (the
system is complaining because the file has deleted itself--
          something you want).
       b. If at a later time you wish to re-install SHADOWLAND, simply
run SHADOW.EXE (the file you originally downloaded) and
repeat step 1.1 b (above). SHA-OUT.bat does not delete your
          SHADOW.EXE file.
       c. If you wish to remove ALL traces of SHADOWLAND, run
SHA-OUT.BAT, and then manually delete SHADOW.EXE.

2.0 THE PLAYER CIVS:

2.1 Egyptians: Builders of the world's first and most lasting
wonder, the Egyptians begin the game with the Great
Pyramid. Because it provides a granary in every
city, the Great Pyramid is a key advantage in
SHADOWLAND, a world with low food production.
Thebes, the capitol of Egypt, also enjoys the
protection of a city wall (built with leftover
                    material from the Great Pyramid).

2.2 Persians: This highly educated civilization is the world's
premiere repository of knowledge. Their capitol,
Persepolis, begins the game with a library. The
Persians also start with detailed maps of their
		    entire island-continent (discovered in ancient
scrolls from their library). The Persians have the
enviable position of beginning play with knowledge
		    of "literacy" and "the monarchy".

2.3 Babylonians: As the descendants of a once-powerful civilization,
the Babylonians have inherited "The High Road".
This ancient roadway passes throughout their entire
land. Their ingenious ancestors have also gifted
them with a functional system of irrigation which
flows along the High Road. The Babylonians have
fully explored the High Road and have extensive
		    knowledge of their rich domain.

2.4 Vikings: Masters of exploration, the Vikings begin the game
with knowledge of "seafaring" and two triremes.
They have done extensive exploration of their
local area, and have uncovered a series of islands
ripe for the picking. They are the only player
civilization to begin with two cities, each
on separate land masses. An ancient culture has
bequeathed them a series of mysterious "naval
fortresses" which can be used to protect their
	            inland waters.

2.5 Celts: Fierce warriors, the Celts begin the game with the
largest standing army. They have mastered the
knowledge "dragonlore", and are well into the
process of building their first Dragon Rider unit.
They also enjoy the advantage of numerous other
                    military technologies.

3.0 THE ANTAGONIST CIVS:

3.1 The Darkling: Openly cruel and corrupt, this once-great
race uses the black arts to support their
			rampant imperialism. Their capitol city
is rumored to be the world's most powerful
bastion of evil. [Note: this race is NOT
designed to be run by a human player.]

3.2 Cloud Kings: These otherworldly visitors claim to be
			perfection incarnate, but their vicious
nature speaks otherwise. Rumored to be
in touch with "the beyond", they rule from
		        an impregnable fortress, using strange,
powerful weapons to destroy all who approach.
Paranoid and mistrustful of all, they have
secreted their technologies to such an extent
that no one is certain how they have developed
their terrible powers. [Note: this race is
NOT designed to be run by a human player.]

3.3 Legion of Night: A Darkling experiment gone awry. This
evil barbarian horde is found exclusively
on the rich "Isle of Oblivion". When the
Darkling used the black arts to transform
this small landmass into a paradise, they
unleashed a fearsome force which took
control of their island city. Not a
"civilization" in the normal sense, these
bad boys can't be contacted diplomatically.
[Note: this race cannot be run by a
			human player.]

4.0 NEW UNITS:

4.1 Demon: As nasty as they sound. These powerful units pack
the punch of a berserk Knight. Expensive, but
worth it. Become available with the advance of
		     "demonology", which requires "mysticism" and
"writing". Demons become obsolete with the advent
of "theology", when organized religion vanquishes
		     the demonic pool.

4.2 Dragon Rider: The only aerial unit of the ancient world, perfect
for reconnaissance or raining death from on high.
Dragons are extremely territorial, and will
		     fiercely defend friendly cities against
enemy dragons. Dragons have remarkable stamina,
and can easily fly around the world before
requiring a rest break in a friendly city. Do
not, however, forget to rest them a few times,
lest they drop from the sky in exhaustion.
		     Extremely expensive, Dragon Riders become
available with the advance of "dragonlore", which
		     requires "chivalry" and "seafaring". Dragon
Riders become obsolete with the advent of
"gunpowder", when trophy hunters shoot down the
last of the dying breed. WARNING: Do not use
Dragon Riders (or any other air units) to
investigate "goody huts". Air units frighten off
the natives, leaving you nothing but an empty map
square. Always use ground units to explore
		     goody huts.

4.3 SEAL Team: These "super-marines" become available with the
advance of "amphibious warfare". Like marines,
they can strike from sea. SEALs, masters of
infiltration, are able to ignore zones of
control and city walls when they attack. Their
special weapons and tactics provide a high degree
of lethality, but come at an equally high cost.

4.4 Cyborg: The ultimate fighting machine. These killer units
breeze through enemy zones of control, striking
their targets with lightning quickness and
leaving few survivors. Cyborgs become available
		     with the advance of "cybernetics".

5.0 CHANGES TO EXISTING UNITS:

5.1 Trireme: Now much cheaper to make, but holds 1 unit instead
		  of 2. Never becomes obsolete.

5.2 Caravel: Holds 2 units instead of 3. Never becomes obsolete.

  5.3 Galleon: Never becomes obsolete.

6.0 NEW TERRAIN:

6.1 Crater: Although impact craters are a source of
pollution, they are also a rich repository
of valuable alien metals. Units inside a
crater suffer a great defensive penalty.

6.2 Naval Fortress: A standard fortress which happens to be built in
the ocean. Naval units inside the fortress DO
NOT enjoy a defensive bonus, but if stacked, can
only be killed one at a time. Interestingly,
any land units carried aboard a slain vessel ARE
NOT DESTROYED. They simply remain in the naval
fortress until another ship arrives to pick them
up. Land units stationed inside a naval
fortress enjoy the full benefits of a land
fortress. Naval units cannot unload land units
into a fortress, but they may pick them up from
one. Land units can be left alone to defend
a naval fortress only if their host ship is
		       destroyed in combat.

7.0 CHANGES TO EXISTING TERRAIN:

7.1 Food Production: Because of pollution and global
                           warming, special sources of food
(such as game squares) are not as
                           abundant as they normally are.

7.2 The Shadow Effect: There is nothing wrong with your
			   monitor's brightness. Pollution and
			   global warming have produced a
thick cloud cover which overshadows all.

8.0 GETTING HELP:

8.1 The Civilopedia: New units, technologies, and terrain types are
not listed in the Civilopedia. If you ask for
help on a new technology while using the
Science Advisor, it will give you information
about "Advanced Flight". So don't do that.
Hopefully this document will answer all your
questions about the new stuff. You can,
however, still click or double-click on a map
square to get info on the "crater" terrain.

9.0 GAME DYNAMICS:

9.1 Level of Difficulty: Set to "King" by default. Moderately
			    experienced players should try "Prince".
Highly experienced players should go for
			    "Emperor". "Diety" level is strictly
                            for masochists.

9.2 Population Growth: Because of the damaged ecosystem, crops are
not as abundant as they normally are.
			    Population growth is 50% slower.

9.3 Science: Due to an increasing sense of panic,
scientific progress is 20% faster than
			    normal.

9.4 Barbarians: SHADOWLAND is a dangerous, chaotic world.
Think defense. In some places, the
barbarians will always be at your gates.

9.5 Sacrifices: In order to allow for new military units,
one existing unit had to be scratched.
Destroyers no longer exist, and players are
advised to build cruisers in their place.
Also, the "tundra" terrain type has been
			    replaced with "crater".

9.6 Fundamentalism: In SHADOWLAND, this form of government is
not as effective as in a normal game.
Supports 8 units instead of 10, and
science progresses at 25% rather than 50%.

9.7 Choosing a Civ: Pick a player civ which reflects your
			    playing style. Replayability is high,
because each is a very different
		            experience. It is strongly recommended
that you avoid playing the antagonist
races (Darkling and Cloud King). It may
sound like a fun thing to do, but trust
me, it will be neither challenging nor
			    enjoyable. SHADOWLAND has been carefully
designed and tested to insure balance and
stable dynamics only when the player has
chosen one of the five "civilized races".

9.8 Length of Game: Unlike a regular game of Civ II, this
scenario will not always end at the year
2020. Scenarios are based on the number of
TURNS passed, not the number of YEARS.
Regardless of the level of difficulty you
choose, this scenario will run 471 turns
(about the same number of turns you would
receive if playing a regular game at King
                            level).

When you play a REGULAR game of Civ II, the
number of turns you get depends on the
level of difficulty. At Chieftan, you get
570 turns. At Diety, only 420 turns.
However, all regular games still end at
2020. Civ II does this by slowing down
time. The lower the level of difficulty,
the slower time progresses and the longer
it takes you to reach 2020.

The SHADOWLAND scenario ends on the
following years. Pay attention to these
numbers, because the game only gives you
a five-turn warning when your time is
                            about to expire.

                            CHIEFTAN....1920
                            WARLORD.....1920
                            PRINCE......1970
                            KING........2020
                            EMPEROR.....2070
                            DIETY.......2070

Again, please remember, no matter what
year the game ends, you have played the
			    same number of turns.
