CRYPTO 95 is written in Visual Basic 3.0 for operation within Windows 3.x. It requires a mouse. I have tested the program on a machine as slow as a 386 16 mghz PC, and it runs fine. It does load a little slowly on that machine, however. The following files are required to run CRYPTO 95: CRYPTO95.EXE -- This is the executable file, the program itself. SET0.CRY -- This file contains your free set of 100 cyptograms, 5 from each of the other twenty sets that are available. N1.CRY -- These are the pattern word lists used for pattern N2.CRY matching analysis. The nomenclature is informantive: | e.g. 7 letter pattern words are stored in N7.CRY. N14.CRY Patterns words having 14 or more letters are stored in N14.CRY. VBRUN300.DLL -- This is the library of Visual Basic tools The following files are required to run the setup program. The setup program merely writes the files to a user-specified directory, and places an icon in Windows. SETUP95.EXE -- This program copies the files to a user defined directory and installs the appropriate icons in WINDOWS. SETUPKIT.DLL -- This file contains the Visual Basic tools for the setup program The following files are created by CRYPTO 95: PROFILE.CRY -- This dataset keeps track of the latest USER and latest puzzle set being used. This file is created automatically by CRYPTO 95 the first time the program is run. JOHN.USR -- Files with the .USR suffix are user files. A user YOU.USR file is automatically created for each user of XXX.USR CRYPTO 95. The file keeps track of which puzzles DUMMY.USR each user has solved. TARGET.CRY -- These files are automatically created by CRYPTO 95. OK.CRY They are used for copy protection for the additional cryptogram puzzle sets. The following files can be ordered by the user: SET1.CRY -- These are the twenty additional puzzle sets that SET2.CRY can be ordered. | SET20.CRY --------------- COPY PROTECTION --------------- None of the files provided in the distribution disk are copy protected. The additional puzzle sets are copy protected. The additional CRYPTO 95 puzzle sets are copyrighted by John Allen, 1994. Clearly I hold no copy right to the individual quotes, but I do hold a copyright on the structure and organization of each set, and their integration with the CRYPTO 95 program. CRYPTO 95 PUZZLE SETS 1 through 20 cannot be copied or distributed without my written permission. The additional CRYPTO 95 puzzle sets are copy-protected using a non-intrusive, author-derived, and (hopefully) clever scheme. For obvious reasons, the nature of the copy protection will not be revealed here. Suffice it to say that the files TARGET.CRY OK.CRY are key to the copy protection scheme. The copy protection scheme operates only on the additional puzzle sets that can be ordered by the user. The copy protection has no impact on the basic program, the sample puzzle set (SET 0), or the pattern word libraries. These files, and the other files provided with the distribution disk, can be copied freely.
