SMART-FILTER Statistical Filter --------------------------------- Introduction to SMART-FILTER: BEST BET contains prior drawing information (if you keep it up-to-date with drawing information). One of the problems with any number picking system is that it usually will pick numbers that are not statistically "normal" for random numbers. While it is true that random numbers allow for any series of numbers to be picked, in practice lottery drawings do seem to follow some short-lived patterns. Additionally, lottery drawing random numbers tend to be "evenly distributed" more often than not. Not always, but more often than not... Since more often than not is better than "completely unknown", if we can "play the odds" in our favor by using statistical measures that tend to occur more frequently, we increase our chances of winning (if we play regularly). The statistical filter helps eliminate "bogus" number sets; that is, sequences of numbers which are outside of the filter's "pass band". The filter is "tuned" to accept certain kinds of number sequences and reject others. For example, let's look at a typical "pick 6" lotto. It is common to have 3 odd and 3 even numbers in a pick 6 lotto. It is (less) common to see 2 even / 4 odd and to see 4 even / 2 odd combinations. It is rare to see 5 / 1 ratios of odd/even or even/odd. It is very rate to ever see 6 / 0 combinations. Therefore, our SMART- FILTER can be tuned to odd and even numbers. You can choose how many "even" numbers to allow to "pass through" the filter. For example, if you selected "3 even" numbers for the filter setting, only combinations of 6 numbers which were half odd and half even would be selected; example: 1-3-7-20-30-32. The SMART-FILTER will eliminate all number sequences which do not meet this even number "criteria". The following SMART-FILTER tuning criteria are supported: * Spread range * Average * Standard Deviation * Even Number Count * Gap Average * Cumulative Average Q: What is SMART-FILTER ? A: It is a method of filtering, or rejecting, sequences of lottery numbers which do not meet a specified statistical criteria. You choose the statistical criteria (or BEST BET sets the filter criteria for you automatically), then SMART-FILTER eliminates "unreasonable" combinations of lotto numbers. Q: Why should I consider using SMART-FILTER ? A: If you want to simply generate completely random numbers or wheel all of the possible combinations of a set of numbers, then you would not need to use SMART-FILTER. If, however, you want to exercise some control over the type of numbers which BEST BET selects for you, then you can use SMART-FILTER to do so. A: If you wanted to wheel a set of 12 numbers (in a pick 6 lotto, for example), then there are 924 possible combinations, meaning that it would cost $924 to play all 924 combinations. That's a lot of money to bet! Worse yet, most of the 924 combinations are losers, that is, they are not worth attempting at all. For example, there will be some combinations that result in 5 odd numbers and 1 even number. Statistically, this is not a high probability combination. Note that I did not say impossible, but that the 5 odd / 1 even sequence is "improbable". Since any combination is within the realm of the "possible", SMART-FILTER can only help you to eliminate the improbable. Back to the wheel example. Using SMART-FILTER tuned reasonably well, it is possible to cut the number of remaining "reasonable" combinations down from the original 924 to less than 50 (typically 30 to 40, depending upon the filter criteria selected). If instead of wheeling you are just picking numbers using the standard BEST BET number picker, then SMART-FILTER will eliminate those "bogus" combinations that fall outside of the statistical limits you indicate to SMART-FILTER. Since SMART-FILTER is unique to BEST BET and a new approach to playing the lottery, it's merits are only theoretical. However, try playing with SMART-FILTER and the SMART-WHEEL. Take 6 numbers that won in the past, add in 6 other numbers you choose, tune the SMART-FILTER, and see how many of your 6 numbers show up in the "filtered wheel". Q: What is the 10-drawing running average all about anyway ? A: Use of a 10-drawing moving or running average is increasingly common among serious lottery players today. This is how it works. Take a given drawing, and add all the numbers up to get a sum total of the numbers. Example: 1-10-20-30-40-50 when added up equal 151. (Incidentally, BEST BET calculates this SUM in its statistical reports for each drawing for you). Next, do the above summing for each of the past 10 drawings. Next, add all 10 sums together and divide by 10, to get the 10-drawing average. For exmaple, if the sum total of the last 10 drawings' sums is 1459, then 1459 / 10 = 146. Then 146 is the 10-drawing running average. Now that you have a 10-drawing average, you must decide how it will be used. Some folks' system is to try and find a set of numbers that when added together produce a 1-drawing sum exactly equal to the 10-drawing average. In our example of 146, the series 6-10-25-30-35-40 is equal to 146. This example show how some people use a 10-drawing average. BEST BET takes this system a few steps further. BEST BET takes the most recent 9 drawings and computes a temporary sum for those 9 drawings. Next, it takes a set of prospective lotto numbers and computes the sum of this set of "test numbers". The sum of the test numbers is then added to the temporary sum for the prior 9 drawings, yielding a 10-drawing average which will be used with the filter. So BEST BET takes your prospective set of numbers and computes how it would "fit" into a 10- drawing rolling average. This "prospective average" is then examined to see if it is within a valid range or not. The 10-drawing running average filter parameter can be adjusted to accept a range of 10-drawing average values. Using our example above again, let's say our filter criteria is set for a Minimum Weighted Average of 125 and a Maximum of 145. The above computed example, if indeed it was 146, is greater than the Maximum of 145. Therefore, SMART-FILTER would "reject" a set of numbers that resulted in 146. If the numbers 10-drawing average sum had been 138, for example, then SMART-FILTER would have "passed" this set of numbers. When a set of numbers are rejected, they are no longer considered and BEST BET continues to search for a series of numbers that meets the 10-drawing average criteria. One might ask "how can I tell what to set the 10-drawing average filter parameters to?". You can use the BEST BET defaults, which are computed from a selected number of recent drawings, or you can examine the history statistics and make your own determinations. Keep in mind that since the last 10-drawings are used when computing this filter criteria, so care should be taken when choosing the 10-drawing filter criteria. If the filter parameters are set too tightly, then it is likely that the filter will eliminate all prospective numbers that it examines. Q: Why does SMART-FILTER sometimes cause no numbers to be produced ? A: There are several possibilities. Most likely, you have selected a set of tuning criteria that are: * Too restrictive * Impossible or very unlikely to occur (incompatible with each other) * 10-Drawing Weighted Average is set incorrectly If this happens, you may wish to open up the tuning parameters somewhat. If you are using a very small number of recent drawings to preset the default filter parameters, try "opening up" the filter criteria; i.e., decrease the Minimum settings and increase the Maximum settings. Q: Why do I get the message "xxx Combinations Tried" and it just continues ? A: Because you selected a set of SMART-FILTER settings which are highly restrictive, incompatible or too "tight". Try loosening up one or more of the tuning criteria and go again. If you want to stop the above messages and the continued counting, press the 'Esc' or 'q' key to quit the search process. Q: How do I know that SMART-FILTER really works ? A: Take a recent winning set of numbers from the drawing history. Note the following statistical analysis parameters for each drawing: * Spread range * Average * Standard Deviation * Even Number Count * Gap Average * Cumulative Average For example, let's say your playing a Pick 6 Lotto and the set of numbers which won were 8-12-23-29-39-44. Let's also say that we are going to generate a "wheel" of 12 numbers. So, we are going to need some 6 more numbers to wheel 12 numbers. So here are all 12 numbers that we are going to wheel: 3-5-8-12-23-29-30-33-35-39-44-49 I used the following filter tuning criteria: (Actual statistics) Min Spread = 30, Max Spread = 45 (36) Min Average = 20, Max Average = 26 (20) Min Deviation = 13, Max Deviation = 16 (14) Min Gap Average = 6, Max Gap Average = 7 (6) Min Evens = 3, Max Evens = 3 (3/3) Min Cum Average = 110, Max Cum Average = 130 (119) Now, granted I knew the winning 6 numbers here. But I also threw in 6 more bogus numbers for a total of 12 numbers. I'll pick 12 any day I can over only picking 6! I also knew how to tune my filter parameters based upon looking at the statistics for the set of 6 winning numbers. The actual statistics are shown above in parenthesis. Note the range of Min/Max criteria is wide enough to accomodate the winning set of numbers. Since most lotto drawings produce statistically "normal" sets of random numbers more often than not, it is not too hard to figure out how to set the filter parameters reasonably well... Anyway, I ran the above set of 12 numbers through SMART-WHEEL using the SMART-FILTER. Instead of producing a wheel of all 924 combinations of the 12 numbers, it produced only 53 combinations total! And the winning 6 numbers where there! Not only did I get all 6 winners, I got 5 out of 6 several times, 4 out of 6 numerous times and 3 out of 6 a lot (but who cares if all 6 out of 6 were there ?). Instant millionaire right ? Not necessarily. If all 6 of the winning numbers had not been in the 12 numbers I wheeled then I would not have won as much. If I had tuned the filter differently then I would have got too many combinations or too few. However, if I can pick 4 to 6 of the winning numbers out of those 12, using the same type of filter criteria I used, I would still win enough to make a profit on my lotto investment, as follows: 3 out of 6: 15 times @ $3 each = $ 45 4 out of 6: 4 times @ $125 ea. = 500 -------- Total winnings $ 545 Minus cost for 49 plays - 49 -------- Profit on play $ 496 The above example is taken from the November 20, 1993 Texas Lotto Pick 6 actual drawing using BEST BET.
