Scenario 1 Action of Denmark Strait (24 May 41) Scenario File name: BISMARK Visibility: 17 Ships: German British BB BISMARK BC HOOD CA PRINZ EUGEN BB PRINCE OF WALES Notes: The German battleship (BB) BISMARK, accompanied by the heavy cruiser (CA) PRINZ EUGEN steamed from Germany to attack British convoys. The British sighted the two ships and sent the battle cruiser (BC) HOOD and the battleship PRINCE OF WALES to sink the BISMARK or at least slow her down until additional ships could arrive to finish her off. Scenario Objectives: German: Escape with the BISMARK to the south of the British ships. (Your goal is not to slug it out with British warships but to interdict merchant shipping.) British: Slow the BISMARK to 10 kts or less or destroy all of her forward and aft turrets. Scenario 2 Battle of the River Plate (13 Dec 39) Scenario File name: GRAFSPEE Visibility: 24 Ships: German British PB GRAF SPEE CA EXETER CL AJAX CL ACHILLES Notes: The pocket battleship (PB) GRAF SPEE had been successfully raiding merchant shipping when three British cruisers finally caught up with her. Scenario Objectives: German: Escape from the British ships in any direction. Sinking all three cruisers is insufficient compensation for any serious damage sustained by your ship, whose mission is to sink enemy merchant ships. British: Sink or disable the GRAF SPEE, even if this requires the sacrifice of all of your ships. The GRAF SPEE is considered disabled if both her fore and aft turrets are destroyed or if she has been slowed to 10 knots or less. Scenario 3 Battle of the Java Sea (27 Feb 42) Scenario File name: JAVA Visibility: 15 Ships: Japanese ABDA CA HAGURO CA EXETER CA NACHI CA HOUSTON CL JINTSU CL De RUYTER CL NAKA CL PERTH 1 FUBUKI (4 DD's) CL JAVA 2 YUGIRI (4 DD's) 1 ELECTRA (3 DD's) 3 NENOHI (4 DD's) 2 KORTENAER (2 DD's) 4 SHIGURE (3 DD's) 3 PAUL JONES (4 DD's) 5 OSHIO (3 DD's) Notes: Hoping to impede the Japanese invasion of Java, a force of American, British, Dutch and Australian (ABDA) ships steamed from Surabaya to intercept and destroy an invasion convoy. The ABDA force spotted the JINTSU and eight destroyers, but without spotting aircraft they were unaware of the three other cruisers and ten destroyers lurking over the horizon. After a long battle, two allied destroyers were sunk and the remaining ships withdrew. Scenario Objectives: Japanese: Sink or drive off all of the enemy ships in order to clear the way for your invasion force. ABDA: Break through to the northwest of the Japanese ships where the transports would be following (no actual transports are present in the scenario). Scenario 4 Battle of Penang Island (16 May 45) Scenario File name: PENANG Visibility: 8 Ships: Japanese British CA HAGURO DD SAUMAREZ DD YUKIKAZE DD VENUS DD VERULAM DD VIGILANT DD VIRAGO Notes: The Japanese Heavy Cruiser HAGURO was ordered to the Indian Ocean Andaman Islands to pick up a withdrawing garrison. She was spotted en route by aircraft and five British destroyers were sent to attack her. Using radar, the destroyers advanced on the HAGURO in a formation designed to trap her no matter which way she turned to escape. The HAGURO turned to fight rather than flee, but was hit by eight torpedoes and sunk. Scenario Objectives: Japanese: Escape with the HAGURO in any direction (or sink all five enemy ships.) British: Sink the HAGURO Scenario 5 Battle for the Philippines (Hypothetical) Scenario File name: PHIL Visibility: 24 Ships: Japanese U.S. BB HYUGA BB PENNSYLVANIA BB ISE BB ARIZONA BB YAMASHIRO BB MISSISSIPPI BB FUSO BB IDAHO BB KONGO BB NEVADA BB HIEI BB OKLAHOMA BB KIRISHIMA BB CALIFORNIA BB HARUNA BB TENNESSEE BB NAGATO BB COLORADO BB MUTSU BB MARYLAND Notes: Prior to the Second World War, naval planners drew up a number of contingency plans to deal with the possibility of a future conflict with each of the major sea powers. For a war with Japan, they envisioned the U.S. fleet sailing to the Philippines to destroy the Japanese fleet and rescue the Allied garrison there. This scenario simulates the possibility of such a slugfest, the type of battle these ships had been built to fight. When the aircraft carrier appeared on the scene, the battleships were given less glamorous tasks such as anti-aircraft screening and shore bombardment. Scenario Objectives: Japanese: Drive off or sink all of the American ships in order to assure that the invasion of the Philippines will succeed. U.S.: Drive off or sink all of the Japanese ships and save the Philippines from invasion. Scenario 6 Battle for the Philippines II (Hypothetical) Scenario File name: PHIL2 Visibility: 24 Ships: Japanese U.S. BB HYUGA BB PENNSYLVANIA BB ISE BB ARIZONA BB YAMASHIRO BB MISSISSIPPI BB FUSO BB IDAHO BB KAGA BB NEVADA BB TOSA BB OKLAHOMA BB AMAGI BB CALIFORNIA BB AKAGI BB TENNESSEE BB NAGATO BB COLORADO BB MUTSU BB MARYLAND Notes: As a result of the Washington Naval Treaty of 1921 which limited the number of battleships each of the participating countries could have, Japan scrapped a number of battleships that were currently under construction. This scenario is identical to the last except that four of these ships are assumed to have been completed and have been substituted for the four smaller KONGO class battleships. Scenario Objectives: Japanese: Drive off or sink all of the American ships. U.S.: Drive off or sink all of the Japanese ships. Scenario 7 Battle of the English Channel (Hypothetical) Scenario File name: CDASH Visibility: 10 Ships: German British BB SCHARNHORST BB KING GEORGE V BB GNEISENAU CL AURORA CA PRINZ EUGEN CL ARETHUSA CL KENYA CL HERIMONE CL AJAX 1 H Class (3 DD's) 2 H Class (3 DD's) 3 H Class (3 DD's) 4 H Class (3 DD's) Notes: Until early 1942, the SCHARNHORST, GNEISENAU and PRINZ EUGEN were based in the captured French port of Brest where the British subjected them to nearly around the clock bombing. On February 12, however, the Germans managed to sneak the warships out of port and up the English Channel toward Germany. By the time the British discovered this totally unexpected move, it was too late to make more than token attacks against them. This scenario assumes that a large naval force had been available to intercept the German ships. Scenario Objectives: German: Break through to the northeast with the SCHARNHORST and GNEISENAU. British: Sink the German ships or force them back to the southwest. Scenario 8 Battle for Norway (Hypothetical) Scenario File name: NORWAY Visibility: 10 Ships: German British BB SCHARNHORST BC RENOWN BB GNEISENAU 1 H Class (3 DD's) 2 H Class (3 DD's) 3 H Class (3 DD's) Notes: While covering the German invasion of Norway in spring 1940, the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau encountered the British battlecruiser Renown. The German ships retreated after exchanging a few shots although it is likely they could have sunk the Renown. Scenario Objectives: German: Sink the Renown without suffering severe damage to either of your ships. British: Score one or more hits on one of the enemy ships and then escape with the Renown in any direction. Scenario 9 Battle for Morocco (Hypothetical) Scenario File name: MOROCCO Visibility: 24 Ships: U.S. Axis (French) BB MASSACHUSETTS BB JEAN BART 3 AIGLE Class (3 DD's) Notes: Prior to the Allied landings in North Africa in November 1942, the USS MASSACHUSETTS engaged the French battleship JEAN BART (under Axis control) in a gunnery duel which silenced the Axis ship's guns and left her burning. The JEAN BART was anchored and still under construction at the time, and was not completed until 1955. In this scenario, the JEAN BART is assumed to have been completed early, and is more of a match for the U.S. battleship. Scenario Objectives: U.S.: Sink the JEAN BART or destroy all of her turrets. Axis: Sink or drive off the MASSACHUSETTS. Scenario 10 ALASKA vs HARUNA (Hypothetical) Scenario File name: ALASKA Visibility: 24 Land: Guadalcanal, Savo Island, Florida Island Ships: U.S. Japanese (CA) ALASKA BB HARUNA Notes: The USS ALASKA was officially classified as a large heavy cruiser by the U.S. Navy, although her armor and armament were more like that of a battlecruiser. She is as capable a warship as the fast battleship HARUNA, as this scenario demonstrates. Scenario Objectives: U.S.: Sink the HARUNA. Japanese: Sink the ALASKA. This is a difficult task in view of the ALASKA's superior speed and rate of fire. The Japanese player has won a minor victory if he escapes from the ALASKA before being crippled or sunk.) Scenario 11 Battle of Savo Island (9 Aug 42) Scenario File name: SAVO Visibility: 8 Land: Guadalcanal, Savo Island, Florida Island Ships: Japanese U.S. and Allies CA CHOKAI CA CHICAGO DD PATTERSON CA KINUGASA CA CANBERRA DD BAGLEY CA FURUTAKA CA ASTORIA DD BLUE CA KAKO CA QUINCY DD RALPH TALBOT CA AOBA CA VINCENNES DD HELM CL TENRYU CA AUSTRALIA DD WILSON CL YUBARI CL SAN JUAN DD MONSSEN DD YUNAGI CL HOBART DD BUCHANAN Notes: In response to the American landing at Guadalcanal, Admiral Mikawa ordered a force of cruisers to steam down the Solomon Island chain and attempt to break up the beachhead at night. The Japanese achieved total surprise and sank four cruisers without loss, but turned back without bombarding the transports or troops already ashore. Scenario Objectives: Japanese: Break through to the 11 transports anchored to the southeast and sink as many as possible. The single ship 'TRANSPORTS' represents all of the transports. U.S.: Prevent the Japanese from sinking the transports.Because the Japanese attack was not expected, the U.S. player may not fire his guns or change the course or speed of any of his ships until after turn 3. After that, only ships that have been fired on may fire guns or maneuver until turn 15. (As a variant, assume no surprise and allow the U.S. player to respond immediately.) Scenario 12 Battle of Cape Esperance (11 Oct 42) Scenario File name: ESPERANC Visibility: 8 Land: Guadalcanal, Savo Island, Florida Island Ships: Japanese U.S. CA AOBA CA SAN FRANCISCO CA FURUTAKA CA SALT LAKE CITY CA KINUGASA CL HELENA DD FUBUKI CL BOISE DD HATSUYUKI 1 FARENHOLT (3 DD's) 2 BUCHANAN (2 DD's) Notes: A Japanese squadron of cruisers under Admiral Goto steamed toward Guadalcanal where they were to bombard American positions. Unknown to Goto, Admiral Scott was waiting for him, eager to avenge the defeat at Savo Island. The trap was sprung that night when the HELENA's radar picked up the AOBA, enabling Scott to 'cross the T' and open fire on Goto's ships with his entire battle line. The Japanese were saved from total disaster when Scott ordered a cease-fire, concerned that he may have been firing on his own destroyers ahead of him. When the battle continued a few minutes later the Japanese, having had time to overcome their initial surprise, managed to badly damage the BOISE and two destroyers before escaping in the darkness. The Japanese lost both the FURUTAKA and the FUBUKI in their first defeat ever in a night battle. Scenario Objectives: Japanese: Escape to the northwest, losing as few ships as possible. The Japanese player may not alter course or speed or fire any weapons until the third turn after being fired on or until an American ship comes within 3 miles of the AOBA. U.S.: Sink or cripple as many of the Japanese ships as possible. (To simulate the confusion described in the notes, 2 turns after the Japanese player is allowed to fire back, both sides should cease firing for 4 turns.) Scenario 13 Naval Battle of Guadalcanal I (12 Nov 42) Scenario File name: GUAD Visibility: 10 Land: Guadalcanal, Savo Island, Florida Island Ships: Japanese U.S. BB KIRISHIMA CA SAN FRANCISCO BB HIEI CA PORTLAND CL NAGARA CL ATLANTA 1 AMATSUKAZE (3 DD's) CL HELENA 2 AKATSUKI (3 DD's) CL JUNEAU 3 MURASAME (3 DD's) 1 CUSHING (4 DD's) 4 YUDACHI (2 DD's) 2 BARTON (4 DD's) Notes: To clear the way for an amphibious landing, two battleships and their escorts were dispatched to bombard the U.S. airstrip on Guadalcanal. After scouting B-17's sighted the large force steaming down 'The Slot', Admiral Callaghan with his five cruisers and eight destroyers raced to intercept them. The two forces collided after midnight in one of the most furious sea battles ever fought. The Americans turned back the bombardment force, but the ATLANTA, JUNEAU, and four destroyers were sunk. The Japanese lost two destroyers, and the HIEI was badly damaged. She was easy prey for aircraft flying from the unmolested airfield and was sunk the next day. Scenario Objectives: Japanese: Break through to the southeast of the American formation with at least one battleship with operational forward or aft turrets. This battleship would be able to destroy the airfield with its 14 inch guns. U.S.: Turn back or sink both of the enemy battleships in order to prevent the destruction of Henderson field. Scenario 14 Naval Battle of Guadalcanal II (14 Nov 42) Scenario File name: GUAD2 Visibility: 10 Land: Guadalcanal, Savo Island, Florida Island Ships: Japanese U.S. BB KIRISHIMA BB WASHINGTON CA ATAGO BB SOUTH DAKOTA CA TAKAO 1 BENHAM (4 DD's) CL SENDAI CL NAGARA DD SHIKINAMI 1 YUKIKAZE (4 DD's) 2 AYANAMI (2 DD's) 3 ASAGUMO (2 DD's) Notes: Two days after the naval battle of November 12/13, Admiral Kondo again attempted to put Henderson airfield out of action. This time he was met by Admiral Willis Lee, with two battleships and a screen of four destroyers. The Japanese were again turned back, losing the KIRISHIMA and a destroyer. The Americans lost two destroyers, and suffered heavy damage to the SOUTH DAKOTA, which sustained a temporary power loss in the middle of the battle. Scenario Objectives: Japanese: Break through to the southwest of the American ships with at least a battleship or two heavy cruisers. U.S.: Prevent the Japanese from slipping by to bombard the air field. To simulate the SOUTH DAKOTA's power outage at a critical stage in the battle, the SOUTH DAKOTA will be unable to fire any of her guns for a five minute period beginning on a turn of the Japanese player's choosing. Scenario 15 Battle of Tassafaronga (30 Nov 42) Scenario File name: TASSA Visibility: 12 Land: Guadalcanal, Savo Island, Florida Island Ships: Japanese U.S. DD TAKANAMI CA MINNEAPOLIS DD NAGANAMI CA NEW ORLEANS DD MAKINAMI CA PENSACOLA DD OYASHIO CA NORTHAMPTON DD KUROSHIO CL HONOLULU DD KAGERO 1 FLETCHER (4 DD's) DD KAWAKAZE 2 LAMSON (2 DD's) DD SUZUKAZE Notes: Eight Japanese destroyers laden with supplies intended for the troops on Guadalcanal were intercepted and surprised by a superior force of cruisers led by Rear Admiral Wright. The U.S. ships opened fire at a range of 5 miles, but on this occasion their gunnery proved to be inaccurate and only one destroyer was sunk. As the Japanese ships turned to escape to the northwest, they fired torpedoes at the cruisers, sinking the NORTHAMPTON and damaging three others badly enough to keep them out of the war for a year. Scenario Objectives: Japanese: Escape to the northwest with as many destroyers as possible. The Japanese player may not fire any weapons or alter course or speed (except to avoid running aground) until the U.S. player opens fire or until he passes within 4 miles of a U.S. ship. U.S.: Sink the enemy destroyers without losing any of your cruisers. Scenario 16 Battle of the North Cape (26 Dec 43) Scenario File name: NCAPE Visibility: 6 Ships: German British BB SCHARNHORST BB DUKE OF YORK CA NORFOLK CL BELFAST CL JAMAICA 1 S Class (4 DD's) Notes: The German battleship SCHARNHORST left her base in northern Norway to attack an eastbound convoy but was intercepted by a large force of British ships. In the running battle that ensued, the SCHARNHORST was sunk after taking repeated torpedo and shell hits. Scenario Objectives: German: Escape from the British ships in any direction. British: Sink the SCHARNHORST. Variation: On February 25 1942, the GNEISENAU was damaged an RAF bombing raid and never repaired. To create a new scenario that assumes the GNEISENAU was repaired and able to accompany her sister ship, use the scenario editor to add the Gneisenau to the german forces (use Ship database or copy Scharnhorst data). Scenario 17 Battle of the North Cape II (Hypothetical) Scenario File name: NCAPE2 Visibility: 5 Ships: German British BB TIRPITZ BB DUKE OF YORK CA NORFOLK CL BELFAST CL JAMAICA 1 S Class (4 DD's) Notes: On September 19 1943, the TIRPITZ was damaged by British midget submarines while at anchor in a Norwegian fiord. This scenario assumes that the attack failed, and replaces the SCHARNHORST with the TIRPITZ in the Battle of the North Cape scenario. Scenario Objectives: German: Escape from the British ships in any direction. British: Sink the one or both of the German battleships. Scenario 18 YAMATO vs MISSOURI (Hypothetical) Scenario File name: YAMATO Visibility: 24 Ships: U.S. Japanese BB MISSOURI BB YAMATO Notes: The Japanese built the 70,000 ton YAMATO intending her to be able to out-shoot any other ship afloat. As it turned out, the YAMATO was never in action against enemy battleships but was overcome instead by aircraft bombs and torpedoes. In this scenario she is pitted against the MISSOURI, the only battleship that could come close to matching her armor and firepower. Scenario Objectives: U.S.: Sink the YAMATO. Japanese: Sink the MISSOURI. Scenario 19 MONTANA vs No. 789 (Hypothetical) Scenario File name: MONTANA Visibility: 24 Ships: U.S. Japanese BB MONTANA BB 789 Notes: Both Japan and the United States had plans to build monster battleships which would have exceeded the fire power of both the YAMATO and MISSOURI. The USS MONTANA was to have been similar to the MISSOURI except with a total of four triple 16'' turrets rather than just three, and the BB 789 was to have had three twin turrets firing 20'' 4500 lb shells. Scenario Objectives: U.S.: Sink No. 789. Japanese: Sink the MONTANA. Along the way it was attacked by German aircraft and submarines, and it could have been intercepted by a strong surface force. False intelligence and the grounding of the Lutzow and 3 destroyers prevented the Germans from engaging with their heavy ships, but the aircraft and submarines sank all but 11 of the original 37 merchant ships in the convoy. Scenario Objectives: German: Sink at least 18 of the ships in the convoy (represented by the ship unit PQ-17). U.S.: Prevent the Germans from sinking more than 17 of the merchant ships in convoy PQ-17. Scenario 21 Battle of the Barents Sea (31 December 1942) Scenario File name: BARENTS Visibility: 14 Ships: British German CL JAMAICA PB LUTZOW CL SHEFFIELD CA HIPPER DD ACHATES 1 BEITZEN (3 DD's) 1 ORWELL (4 DD's) 2 ECKOLDT (3 DD's) 2 ESCORT (3 DD's) JW-51B (14 Merchant ships) Notes: A German effort to destroy a convoy to Russia developed instead into a series of confused engagements due to bad weather and the division of attacking ships into two groups. Each side lost a destroyer but the convoy got through unharmed. Scenario Objectives: British: Escape with at least 7 ships left in JW-51B. German: Sink at least 8 of the ships in JW-51B. Scenario 22 Bombardment of Vila Scenario File name: VILA Visibility: 8 Land: Kolombangara, Arundel Island, New Georgia Ships: U.S. Japanese CL MONTPELIER DD MURASAME CL CLEVELAND DD MINEGUMO CL DENVER DD WALLER DD CONWAY DD CONY Notes: On 6 March 1943 a U.S. bombardment force sent to shell the Vila airstrip on Kolombangara sank two destroyers ferrying supplies to the garrison there. Scenario Objectives: Japanese: Escape with at least one Destroyer, sink an enemy ship, or score a torpedo hit on one of the cruisers. U.S.: Sink both destroyers without taking serious damage in return. Variation: Historically, the Japanese did not detect the U.S. ships until they had closed to 5 miles and opened fire on them. To simulate this, the Japanese player may not maneuver or fire weapons until he sights torpedo wakes, is fired on, or closes to within 4 miles of the U.S. ships. Scenario 23 Battle of the Komandorski Islands (26 March 1943) Scenario File name: KOMANDOR Visibility: 14 Ships: U.S. Japanese CA SALT LAKE CITY CA NACHI CL RICHMOND CA MAYA DD BAILEY CL TAMA DD COGHLAN CL ABUKUMA DD DALE DD WAKABA DD MONAGHAN DD HATSUSHIMO DD IKAZUCHI DD INAZUMA ASAKA MARU SAKITO MARU Notes: A U.S. task group patrolling the western Aleutians encountered a much larger Japanese force running reinforcements to Attu. The U.S. commander decided to engage at long range and attempt to sink the two merchant cruisers (Asaka Maru and Sakito Maru) and escape. Although no ships were lost on either side in the three and a half hour battle that ensued, the Japanese were driven off. Scenario Objectives: U.S. Sink the Asaka Maru and Sakito Maru and escape without losing either of your cruisers. Japanese: Save the Asaka Maru and Sakito Maru or sink one of the U.S. cruisers. Although outgunned, superior training and torpedoes enabled the Japanese to sink the Helena with the loss of only one destroyer. Scenario Objectives: Japanese: Escape from the U.S. ships, inflicting at least as much damage as you take. (Count a torpedo hit on a cruiser as equivalent to one destroyer sunk, and a cruiser sunk as equivalent two destroyers sunk.) U.S.: Sink at least two of the Japanese destroyers without taking greater damage than you inflict. Although lacking radar, the Japanese were using a receiver that could detect radar signals. Japanese "Long Lance" torpedoes again saved the day, sinking a destroyer and damaging the Leander and St. Louis in exchange for the loss of the Jintsu. Scenario Objectives: Japanese: Escape from the U.S. ships, inflicting at least much damage as you take. (Count a torpedo hit on a cruiser as equivalent to one destroyer sunk, and a cruiser sunk as equivalent two destroyers sunk.) U.S.: Sink at least two destroyers or the Jintsu without taking greater damage than you inflict. Three of the Japanese destroyers were sunk without damage to any of the U.S. ships. Scenario Objectives: Japanese: Escape with at least two destroyers or sink at least one U.S. ship. Japanese ships may not fire weapons or maneuver until they are fired on, sight torpedo wakes, or come within 4 miles on enemy ships. U.S.: Sink at least three of the destroyers without losing a ship. Six destroyers were sent to intercept them, but when Captain Walker on the Selfridge detected the enemy ships half of his force was still twenty miles to the south. Rather than allow the Japanese to escape, Walker attacked immediately, hoping to draw the opposing destroyers south toward the other U.S. ships. Before these reinforcements could arrive, the Japanese had sunk the Chevalier and torpedoed the Selfridge, losing only the Yugumo. Scenario Objectives: Japanese: Sink the three closer destroyers and depart before the remaining U.S. destroyers arrive. U.S.: Sink at least as many destroyers as you lose. The approaching ships were detected by reconnaissance planes and met by U.S. cruisers more than 35 miles short of the transports. Despite the approximate equality of forces, surprise and superior tactics led to a U.S. victory, with a destroyer and the Sendai sunk in exchange for a U.S. destroyer damaged. Scenario Objectives: Japanese: Sink or drive off the U.S. ships. U.S.: Sink or drive off the Japanese ships. The Italians could have avoided the battle, but attacked believing that aircraft from nearby bases would be able to even the odds by damaging some of the British battleships. Although none of the British ships were damaged by air attacks, the Italians managed to escape serious damage in the 45 minute encounter. Scenario Objectives: British: Sink the Giulio Cesare and Andrea Doria. Italian: Score at least one penetrating hit on a British battleship and escape without losing either of your battleships. The Italian ships chased the destroyers for an hour, firing at long range until the Sydney emerged from a fog bank and attacked. A chance hit disabled the Colleoni which was then sunk by torpedoes, but the Bande Nere fought on. The British withdrew after running low on ammunition. Scenario Objectives: British: Sink either Italian cruiser. Italian: Sink at least one British ship and withdraw without losing either cruiser. The Italians were thus able to field a powerful force of 5 battleships, matching the forces available to the British in the Mediterranean. Although these five ships did sail together on 30 August to attack British warships which had left harbor, no battle occurred. This scenario pits them against the British battleships then stationed at Alexandria and Gibraltar. Scenario Objectives: British: Sink or drive off all enemy ships. Italian: Sink or drive off all enemy ships. The two forces met and fired on each other for about 40 minutes. Due to inaccurate reconnaissance reports, the Italians thought they were outnumbered and did not pursue the withdrawing British ships. The British commander, who believed (incorrectly) that several of the Italian ships had been previously damaged by air attacks, was the subject of a board of inquiry for not having carried out the engagement "more energetically." Scenario Objectives: British: Sink or drive off all of the Italian ships. Italian: Break through the enemy formation with at least one battleship or three cruisers able to fire forward or aft turrets. The British were escorting a convoy to the southeast which your ships would then have been able to destroy. No actual convoy ships are present in this scenario. Unknown to the British, 3 Italian battleships were available to intercept them as they withdrew after a half hour of shelling. The Italians were unable to find the British in the fog however, and the battle never took place. Scenario Objectives: Italian: Sink both of the British battleships without losing any of yours. A portion of this force encountered 4 British cruisers. With the Vittorio Veneto initially off in the distance, a long range gunnery battle between the opposing cruisers commenced, but the British ships fled when the Italian battleship appeared. Although the Italian battleship escaped, a powerful British force which included 3 old battleships sunk the Pola and 4 ships which had turned back to assist her. This scenario assumes the entire Italian force (except for the Pola) was caught by the British. They hoped to both draw the Italians into a decisive action and ensure the safety of a convoy to Malta. The Rodney and Prince of Wales had been brought into the Mediterranean to guarantee British naval superiority. Although the Italians did put to sea to attack the British, the two forces never found each other. The battle would have been even, as Italian torpedo planes had damaged the Nelson. Scenario Objectives: British: Sink or drive off all enemy ships. Italian: Break through to the south of the British formation with at least one battleship or three cruisers able to fire their forward or aft turrets. The British were escorting a convoy which your ships would then have been able to destroy. No actual convoy ships are present in this scenario. With the advantage of radar and sunrise, the British ships quickly sank all of the supply ships and two destroyers before the Italian cruisers could react. Scenario Objectives: Italian: Escape with at least four of the ships in the Duisburg Convoy group. The Trento, Trieste, and 3 Libeccio may not maneuver or fire weapons until turn 8 unless they are fired on or come within 6 miles of an enemy ship. The two destroyer escorts defending the convoy attempted to buy time for its escape by attacking the superior British force, but after a hour of fighting both supply ships and the Cassiopea were sunk. Scenario Objectives: Italian: Escape with either the Maritza or the Procida. British: Sink the Maritza and the Procida. These ships were sighted on 30 November 1941 and four British cruisers left Malta to intercept them. Although the British did intercept and sink a lone supply ship, they never made contact with the Veneiro group. Scenario Objectives: British: Sink the Veneiro. Italian: Escape with either cruiser. Note for new scenarios: If you use the Barbiano or Giussano to build a new scenario, their Damage Factors (DF) should be changed from 100 to 50 to reflect the fact that they are not carrying gasoline. Only darkness and the Italian ships' lack of radar saved the British from disaster. Scenario Objectives: Italian: Sink at least two of the cruisers before turn 12. After turn 12 visibility is assumed to be reduced to the point were further combat is impossible. British: Escape with the loss of no more than 1 cruiser. Alternate version: Had this battle occurred earlier in the day, the British ships would have been slaughtered. Ignore the requirement that combat end at turn 12, the Italian player wins only by sinking all of the British cruisers without loss of any of his battleships or cruisers. This time they did not get away without severe punishment and suffered damage to the Cleopatra, Euryalus, Penelope, and 6 destroyers. Scenario Objectives: Italian: Sink at least three of the cruisers. British: Escape with at least three cruisers. The convoy from Alexandria was turned back by heavy aircraft and torpedo boat attacks and the presence of a powerful Italian naval force. Scenario Objectives: British: Escape with at least one supply ship. Italian: Sink all ten supply ships. After three days of heavy air and submarine attacks, the surviving units of the convoy were attacked by Italian ships near the island of Pantelleria. The Italians sank three supply ships and a destroyer and shot up several other vessels before withdrawing. Scenario Objectives: British: Escape with at least two supply ships. The Italians claimed they had engaged a cruiser of the Southampton class as well as the Cairo but the British denied the presence a second cruiser. The Birmingham has been added to the British forces in this scenario to match the "Italian version" of the battle. Scenario Objectives: British: Escape with all five supply ships or sink both Italian cruisers. Italian: Sink at least 1 supply ship and escape without losing both of your cruisers. The Italians and Germans countered this effort with a gauntlet of submarines, torpedo boats, aircraft, and had planned to intercept surviving convoy units with six cruisers east of Malta. By the time the convoy reached Malta, it had been whittled down to 2 cruisers (one damaged), seven destroyers, and six merchant ships. The intervention of the Italian cruisers at this point would have resulted in the total destruction of the survivors, but they were not employed. In this scenario, this cruiser force is pitted against the original convoy. Scenario Objectives: British: Break through to the east of the Italian formation with at least 9 surviving supply ships. Italian: Sink at least 6 supply ships or turn back the British convoy. Scenario 56 Battle of the River Plate 2 (Hypothetical) Scenario File name: GRAF2 Visibility: 24 Ships: German British PB GRAF SPEE CA CUMBERLAND CA EXETER CL AJAX CL ACHILLES Notes: The hunting group that engaged the GRAF SPEE normally included the Cumberland, which was in port being repaired during the battle. The Cumberland had been added to the British forces in this scenario. Scenario Objectives: German: Escape from the British ships in any direction. British: Sink the GRAF SPEE. Scenario 57 Battle of the River Plate 3 (Hypothetical) Scenario File name: GRAF3 Visibility: 24 Ships: German British PB GRAF SPEE CA CUMBERLAND CL AJAX CL ACHILLES Notes: After her battle with the British cruisers, the Graf Spee took refuge in the neutral port of Montevideo. By international law she could only remain for 72 hours or be interned. The British used false intelligence to convince the Germans that a large force which included a battlecruiser was waiting outside the harbor, and the crew of the Graf Spee scuttled their ship rather than engage in a hopeless fight. In reality, only the Cumberland had joined the Achilles and damaged Ajax, and the crippled Exeter had withdrawn. In this scenario the Graf Spee attempts to fight her way to safety. Scenario Objectives: German: Escape from the British ships in any direction. British: Sink the GRAF SPEE.
