Another set of instruction by your friend, Captain "CRUNCH" =================----------------- NAVCOM 6 -----------------================= OPERATIONS MANUAL ----------------- AEGIS Guided Missile Cruiser Command, Control and Communication Combat Information Center(CIC). The CIC console is scanned with the cursor keys or by moving the joystick left or right. Combat Information Center Instruments ------------------------------------- 1. NAVIGATION DISPLAY PANELS The navigation panel aperars at the extreme left, bottom section of the CIC. It contains readouts for the ship's compass heading, longitude and latitude in degrees, minutes, and seconds, and the ship's speed in knots. 2. PERSIAN GULF TACTICAL DISPLAY MAP Above the navigation panel is a map of the Persian Gulf region. The ships position is indicated at all times by a white square. The positions of other ships are plotted on the map when a reconnaissance satellitie is over the region(see Satellite Orbit Display bellow). Friendly or neutral ships will appear as white dots. Ships believed to be hostile will be red. 3. SATELLITE ORBIT DISPLAY The world map to the right of the navigation panel shows the current positon of three military reconnaissance/communication satellites. Theses satellites are in low orbit and can only provide data to you when they are over the Persian Gulf region. 4. RADAR PANEL To the right of the Persian Gulf tactical map there are two radar screens. The left screen is the surface sarch(ships, boats, oil platforms) and the right screen is for air search(aircraft, missiles). Friendly radar contacts will be white blocks. Hostile contacts appear as red boxes. If you are using a color monitor with an EGA card, yellow dots are hostile missiles, light blue dots are friendly missiles. Below the radar screens is a readout which will indicate the radar source and whether the ship's radar is in "Active" or "Passive" mode. 5. ARMAMENTS/AMMUNITION INVENTORY To the right of the radar panel is the ship's weapons inventory. AGM84s are long range "Harpoon" ship to ship missiles. BGM55s are short range "Tomahawk" ship to ship missiles. The RIM76s are surface-to-air missiles for defense against aircraft or missiles. The 54CAL is the inventory for the ship's two 5-inch, 54-caliber deck guns. 6. COMMAND MONITOR Below the radar of the weapons inventory and command monitor is the ship's SONAR panel. Since no enemy submarine activity is likely, the SONAR is used primarily to detect underwater mines. 8. VIDEO MONITOR The Video monitor serves three purposes: displaying damage control status, Video surveillance from on-board cameras and the SH-2F helicopter, and for remote aiming of the ship's deck guns. NAVCOM-6 Commands 1. C.I.C. PANEL COMMANDS The left and right arrow keys("4" and "6" on the numeric keypad) are used to scan the CIC panel. To save time, the "HOME" key will instantly display the far left section of the CIC and the "END" key will take you to the far right section. 2. VIDEO CAMERA The videp monitor on the CIC's far right can be switched on by pressing the "V" key. There are five cameras: bow, starboard, aft, port, and SH-2F helicopter remote. To change the camera view, press the TAB key. The SH-2F helicopter camera will not function until the helicopter is deployed. 3. DAMAGE CONTROL By pressinf the "D" key, the bideo monitor will display the damage control status for the ship. If a system is damaged, a red box will appear on the diagram of the ship, and message will appear below the diagram. Repair of damaged systems is commenced automatically. 4. SHIP NAVIGATION To turn the ship to port(left), hold down the "< ," key; to turn starboard(right), hold down the "> ." key. The ship's speed is set by the following function keys: F2 Full Speed(32 knots) F4 3/4 Speed(24 knots) F6 1/2 Speed(16 knots) F8 1/4 Speed( 8 knots) F10 Stop 5. MISSILE LAUNCH CONTROL There are two ways to control the launching of ship-to-ship or surface-to-air missiles. The simplest is to let the AEGIS Defense System's computer select targets and launch the missiles. To toggle from manual control to automatic targeting, press the backspace key "BKSPC". To switch back to manual, press the "BKSPC" key again. Automatic control means that you will not have any control over which radar contact is fired on by the computer. When on automatic, the AEGIS computer will only launch at tarrgets identified as hostile by the IFF interrogator. If the IFF is damaged, the computer will switch launch control to manual. MANUAL CONTROL OF MISSILE TARGETING AND LAUNCH: When missile control is manual, the current designated air and surface targets will appear on the screen surrounded by a flashing box. To select a different target, (or if no target is designated by the flashing box) press either the "(" or ")" key to change the surface surface targets or press either the "-" or "+" keys to change the air target. Pressing the following function keys will fire a missile at the target designated to launch. Guidance is automatic. F1 Launch Harpoon AGM-84 (surface) F3 Launch Tomahawk BGM-55 (surface) F5 Launch MR SAM RIM-67 (air) 6. CLOSE-IN-WEAPON-SYSTEM Last ditch defense against air attack and sea-skimming missiles is provided by two Mk15 Vulcan/Phalanx 20mm Close-in-Weapon-Systems. Each Phalanx CIWS contains a six-barrel gatling gun and is self-contained. Once activated, it is completely automatic. Press f& key to toggle CIWS on or off. 7. FIVE-INCH 54-CALIBER DECK GUN Press the "F9" key to activate the deck guns. The CIC panel will automatically be viewed. The deck guns can be controlled by using either a joystick or the cursor keys. By holding down either of the "SHIFT" keys while pressing the cursor keys, the gun's position can be finely adjusted. Note that the gun's bearing is not "TRUE" compass bearing. The bearing displayed is the relative bearing, clockwise from the ship's bow. To conserve ammunition, you may whish to fire a spotting round by pressing the "ENTER" key and see where it falls in relation to the target. Then, adjust bearing and elevation, and press the "SPACE BAR" to "Fire For Effect". It is important to "lead" a moving target to compensate for speed and travel time. In addittion to typical surface targets, such as gunboats and oil platforms, the deck gun can be used to clear minefields. Mines appear as black dots on the surface of the water. To deactivate the deck guns, press the "F9" key again. 8. LAMPS SH-2F HELICOPTER The helicopter is useful for scouting situations away from the ship. To deploy the helicopter, press the "L" key. The helicopter will proceed on the same headind as the ship at the time of deployment. To turn the helicopter, use the "[{ and "]" keys. The helicopter can be recalled to the ship by pressing the "L" key again. When the helicopter has used 40% of its fuel, it will automatically turn back towards the ship. The LAMPS helicopter is also equipped with radar. By pressing the "H" key, the surface and air search screens will switch from the ship's to the helicopters. To switch back to the ship radar, press the "S" key. 9. RADAR & ELECTRONIC WARFARE As noted above, the radar display display can be switched to originate from the ship or LAMPS helicopter. There is also an E2-C Hawkeye aircraft operating in the Persian Gulf. The Hawkeye's radar has a greater range and sensitvity than either the ship's or LAMPS'. To switch the radar screen to the E2-C, press the "E" key. Again, to switch back to ship's radar, press the "S" key. There are two types of radar searches that can be conducted from the ship - active or passive. Active radar searches are more sensitive, but also make your ship more visible to enemy radar. To select "Active Radar", press the "A" key. For "Passive Radar", press the "P" key. Jamming of enemy missile's homing radar can be done by pressing the "J" key. The signals give the position away from your ship. You may want to leave it off until enemy missiles ARE launched. 10. TRAINING MODE You can deactivate ALL enemy missiles warheads by holding down the "ALT" key and presinf the "D" key. To reactivate press the same keys. COMMAND SUMMARY --------------- C.I.C.
