The AMOS IRC channelThere is now a channel on IRC in which you can talk to other AMOS programmers or users, and not just from your country, but worldwide!! IRC is a program which allows you to type sentences to a "channel" in which you can talk to other people, and they can talk to you too. The best IRC client program on the Amiga is AmIRC, and on the PC I would suggest you use either mIRC or Pirch. If you click on any of the highlighted client program names, you will be taken to a website where you can download a demo version from. All you need to use the clients, are a modem, which must be set up correctly and be connected to the internet. IRC will pretty much set itself up, and give a few servers to use etc. so there is no need to spend hours puzzling the prefs out. So, how do I get to the channel?Because of the way IRC is, you can join any channel you want, you can even make a name up and join that channel. Most popular channels include #Amiga and #Peacefull, but a few other popular channels exist. The AMOS channels are on what is called Efnet, or IRCnet as it is now known. You should use a server such as irc.stealth.net if you live in the USA, or irc.bt.net is one of the best for UK people. You can use either of these servers, or ones like irc.funet.fi, irc.demon.co.uk (Demon account holders only), or if you join one of the above servers and type /LINKS you will be presented with a list of servers connected to that service, so if you can find one locally in the list, you might find it quicker. Once you are joined onto a server, you will need to join a channel. All channels start with a # character. The most common AMOS channels to join, are #AMOS, or #AMOSList for members of the AMOS mailing list. I usually stay on both channels, and most people who come on do so also. I go by the nick Mush, and my bot goes under as Fish-Guy. Fish monitors the channels, and evades any trouble makers, controls auto-ops etc. Any AMOS programmers will be awarded auto ops with the bot, as im not an ops-scrounge like a lot of people on the net. If you misuse the power you have, it will be removed from you. Fish-Guy also has lots of commands built into him, which can be used by anyone. Obviously, the more ops you have with him, the more commands you have access to. If you type "/MSG Fish-Guy COMMANDS" minus the quotes, he will tell you the commands you have access to. See the next section for more info on the bot. Fish-Guy on #AMOSList and #AMOSFish-Guy is a bot I have running on mIRC. Even though I am an Amiga fanatic, I am currently unable to get it online, as my modem was damaged on the way over to USA, so I have to wait to get one sorted out. My fiancee has a PC which I have online from 7am thru till 10pm at night usually. Fish-Guy usually resides on the channels, although I often take him offline to make alterations to him. Fish-Guy is origanally a set of scripts named "Fearbot V5" and I have made a lot of changes to him to customize him to my own, and the channel's needs. All AMOS programmers will be awarded a status of 200 with him, with the highest available being 500 (which only I will have) but the longer you use the channel, the more ops you will get with him. Ops level 200 will buy you a few commands, and also enable you to receive auto-ops when you join the channel. As I said before, im not an ops-scrounge, just as long as you dont abuse the power. Usefull commands I have added to the bot include a command named HOMEPAGE. This allows you to view information on a persons homepage, and get it's URL. If you type HOMEPAGES in the main channel window, you will be presented with a list of all the homepages he currently has stored in memory. Any AMOS programmers who come onto the channel can have their homepages programmed into it just by asking me. I will then place them in when I do the daily operations update, so you can access the URL and a brief description. I was also thinking of doing an AMOS command-help system, so if you typed in something like COMMAND AMAL and it would give you a brief description for AMAL. This is only on the drawing board, and dont know if I will ever undergo such a huge task as this. We shall have to see.
