If you have InstallPPC you don't need elfloader-Patch anymore!

With runelf the e flag was not needed.

Did you set the 'e' bit of the protection flags ?

The latest ppc.library is 46.19, but that's probably not the problem.

No, runelf is not needed anymore.

I've tried to compile some of the CyberGL example programs with scppc and the
cybergl.a elf module, but I have some problems. The attachGLview returns
correctly an APTR but the GL drawing functions don't draw anything.

Here is as example the startup code of cubes_anim.c (one of the cybergl demos)
that I've compiled/adapted for the ppc linklib:

Original:

void main (int argc, char *argv[])
{
  void *window;

  window = openGLWindowTags (WIDTH, HEIGHT, GLWA_Title,"Animated Cubes",
                                             GLWA_IDCMP, IDCMP_CLOSEWINDOW |
		IDCMP_MOUSEMOVE | IDCMP_MOUSEBUTTONS | IDCMP_NEWSIZE,
                                             GLWA_CloseGadget, TRUE,
                                             GLWA_DepthGadget, TRUE,
                                             GLWA_DragBar,     TRUE,
                                             GLWA_Activate, TRUE,
                                             GLWA_RGBAMode, GL_TRUE,
                                             GLWA_SizeGadget, TRUE,
                                             GLWA_MaxWidth, 1280,
                                             GLWA_MaxHeight, 1024,
                                             TAG_DONE);

  if (window)
  {
    glColorMaterial  (GL_FRONT_AND_BACK, GL_AMBIENT_AND_DIFFUSE);

[....]

Adapted:

void main (int argc, char *argv[])
{
  struct TagItem wtags[]={
    WA_InnerWidth,WIDTH,WA_InnerHeight,HEIGHT,
    WA_Title,"Animated Cubes",
    WA_IDCMP,
IDCMP_CLOSEWINDOW|IDCMP_MOUSEMOVE|IDCMP_MOUSEBUTTONS|IDCMP_NEWSIZE,
    WA_Flags, WFLG_DRAGBAR | WFLG_ACTIVATE |WFLG_GIMMEZEROZERO|
WFLG_CLOSEGADGET |
	 WFLG_DEPTHGADGET |WFLG_SIZEGADGET,
    WA_MaxWidth, 1280,WA_MaxHeight, 1024,
    TAG_DONE,0};

  if(!(IntuitionBase=(struct
IntuitionBase*)OpenLibrary("intuition.library",39)))
  {
	printf("Unable to open intuition!\n");
	return;
  }

  if (window = OpenWindowTags (NULL,wtags) )
  {

if(!(myview=attachGLView(WIDTH,HEIGHT,window->RPort,window->RPort->BitMap,NULL,NU
LL)))
    {
	printf("Unable to open view!\n");
	CloseWindow(window);
	return;
    }

    glColorMaterial  (GL_FRONT_AND_BACK, GL_AMBIENT_AND_DIFFUSE);

[....]

Obviously I've also corrected the IDCMP loop and I include only
clib/cybergl_protos.h instead of proto/cybergl.h.

The window opens, the attachGLView call returns a non-null pointer but anything
is
drawn on the window (opened on a 16bit depth screen, but I've tried also a
24bit
window without luck...).

Ciao,
 Gabry (gabry@promix.it)

You need to call glFlush() after you finished drawing.

It's possible to use varargs amiga calls with SCPPC?

The ppcincludes seems to support this, but if I use for instance
OpenWindowTags instead of OpenWindowTagList I have strange problems (not every
tag is processed correcly)...

Works fine in all cases with ELF output.

There are problems with many routines (such as OpenWindowTags) if you use
HUNKOBJ format.

Dunno why, found it myself a while ago.

hi!
ok, here comes a quite technical question. maybe someone can tell me a bit
more about the execution-times of the 603/604.

in the book "optimizing powerpc-code" is a clear list of the execution-times
of the 601.
is there any difference (and if yes, where) to the 603/604 execution-times?

and another question i have about the float-instructions.
the book tells, that all divide-instructions stall the pipeline for quite a
long time.
but what about the eg. fres, fsqrt (not 603) or frsqrte ? the book tells all
other instructions
would take only 4 cycles (which would include these instructions.) but i'm
quite unsure if this could be true.

ok, hope these questions are not too lame ;)

thanx!

/sebastian

I have no information about the 601 execution times, but I have
the User's manuals for 603e and 604e and there *are* differences.
Example: 603-div 37 cycles, 604-div 20 cycles.

Another advantage of the 604e is, that it has 7 pipelines (two and
a half integer units) and the 603e has only 5 (one and a half
integer units).

fres stalls the FPU pipeline on 603e and 604e for 18 cycles.
fsqrt doesn't exist for 603/604 and frsqrte *doesn't* stall the
pipeline (executes in 3 cycles).

Strange, but true. When I try fsqrt with my 604e I'm running in an
illegal instruction exception. Try it. :)

BTW, frsqrte is not really 1/sqrt(x) but only an estimation. But
precise enough for games, for example.

Yep, PPC is really good for 3D geometry, 1 cycle mul+add and 1/sqrt(x) for
fast vector normalization. How long 1/sqrt(x) est. takes?

I already wrote that, AFAIR. 3 cycles (603e+604e). Doesn't stall
the float pipeline.

Does not stalling mean one can drive fpmuladd at the same time or so?
Is the PPC floating point unit pipelined like Pentium FPU so that one can
interleave fp operations? Fpmadd was one cycle, so .. it would mean under
one cycle.

   That's three cycles of latency, but the throughput is one per cycle, just
as for fmadd.

   Why do you flush caches at all when calling SetAPen() and WritePixel()?

   But note that the 604e can still only write back two integer results per
cycle. So although it can produce as many as five integer results per cycle,
doing so fills up the completion buffer very quickly. This is, btw, the
primary reason it is difficult to make RC5 work faster per MHz on a 604e than
on a 603e.

   It means that other floating point instructions (except f(s)div) can be in
the pipeline at the same time. So, for example, an fmadd/frsqrte/fmsub
sequence takes away only three execution cycles from the floating point
pipeline, when scheduled properly.

   The PPC FP pipeline has three execution stages, so three FP instructions
can be in the pipeline at the same time.

Hmm. I wonder if egcs is wise enough to create 1/sqrt(x) instruction when
doing float x = 1.0f / sqrt(x); and -ffast-math?

Ok. So 604e FPU is pipelined, how about 603e? What is fdiv's

free compilers available too. (egcs, vbcc, SAS/C if you own SAS/C)

Ok, so it is like the Pentium. Execpt Pentium doesn't have 1/sqrt(x)..

you needn`t to be such a rich man.... look at the comming stormDSK

(SASC had also cost a lot when it was available - exept the selling of the
last pieces)
and if you look what is in the dsk - it` s fully worth the cash......
look at hp homepage....

Not that hard to configure. The worst part for a beginner is to know what
to download...

hi!

you dont need to download the whole gcc-package. buy the
amiga-veceloper-cd (20,- dm). i think its very worth the money. and it
install all by itself.
the only thing you have to know then, is how to write a proper makefile.

try it before you spend lots of money on just a better environment.

Or buy the Geekgadges CD. It should be really cheap and contains all
software from the project(egcs, X, TeX,...). AFAIK the ppc with ppc
output is on this CD too.

Hello,
I'm trying to use a cgx display to draw my stuff.

I've got currently a code using view, viewports, rasinfo, bitmaps.

What must I do to switch to cgx ?
 Are there source available somewhere ?
 ( I already checked the CGXDevKit but that's too light for me)...

What do I do with a CberModeId ? Do I have to put it un the extraview stuff ?
Do I have to open a screen and draw into its rastport ???

Any sources hints, docs greatly apreciated
(please e-mail me at philippe.torrelli@wanadoo.fr)

Thanks in advance

Phil.

Execpt the ppc-gcc in GG CD is quite old gcc. One can compile egcs
though.. SAS/C ANSI C link library works just fine with egcs too.

SAS/C is much more ANSI than StormC.
Besides, there are no 'weird Unix type config files' in egcs.

I don't think you will find a (usable) compiler which is smaller,
faster and more ANSI-compliant than vbcc. Of course, egcs will
certainly generate better code, but it's your choice.

Yes, vbcc is a good alternative too. I would like to compile it as a cross
compiler in Linux? Could you help?

Hello all,
following your compiler-discussion I have some questions:

Currently I am using SAS/C for 68K and PPC and sometimes gcc.

What exact do I have to do to use functions like printf, fopen,...
with gcc for PPC? I have heard about the ixemul bridge from Holger
Jacob, but never tried it.

Jyrki O Saarinen wrote that it is possible to use the SAS/C ANSI
C link library together with egcs. Is this also possible with with
gcc and how would I do this?

If egcs is better than gcc, what exactly do I need and were can I
download or buy it? What about a crosscompiler for linux?

What about vbcc? Which compiler would you prefer? For my project
(pc-emulator) I need the fastest code possible at all.

AFAIK AmigaInc has selected WarpOs as the ppc-system for the future.
Can I use SAS/C (gcc, egcs) to produce WarpOs programs?

Regards Alexander Fritsch

This is called ANSI C link library. (stdio etc.)

Yes. ppc-amigaos-ld -r sasstartup.o your_object.o end.o scppc.a

You can easily build a cross compiler for Linux.
Build binutils with target=ppc-elf and build egcs with target=ppc-elf.

Then use the latest snapshot of egcs.

No but OS3.5 will support ppc.library programs too. (Fleecy Moss told me
this)

I used the standard example with SetAPen() and WritePixel(), but I was
interested
in the speed-up if some cache flushing is involved, as it is necessary for
some graphics functions; e.g., if you want to know for some reason the
actual drawing position or some other rastport info inaccesible by means of
GetRPAttr().

As you see, the reason was more or less laziness to create another test
program.

The compiler and preprocessor will work. I ported vbcc successfully
to NetBSD/68k and SCO/i386 (Volker runs it under Linux/Alpha). But
you need to find an appropriate linker, assembler, header files and
libraries for this platform - or write your own standard libs, as I
did for PowerUp and WarpOS.

Which Linux, BTW? M68k, i386, PPC?

Hmm..seems you are talking about bootstrapping vbcc for a system without a
(usable) native compiler.

I assume he already has a native compiler under Linux. Therefore he just
has to build vc, vcpp, vbcc, pasm and vlink using this compiler to get a
cross-vbccppc.
