I have some computationally intensive code that, due to lack of registers, needs load and store some data (32-bit integers) from/to memory. The code keeps both single cycle integer units busy all the time, and now I need to insert lwz/stw instructions, with as little impact on execution speed as possible. I am programming in assembler and trying to optimise for a 604e. Each lwz seems to cost half a cycle, and if I'm reading the 604 manual right, this is because there are only two integer write back ports. Each stw seems to cost anywhere from half a cycle to one cycle. If I'm reading the 604 manual right, stw should be free. I'm basicly clueless about this one. All the accessed memory is in level 1 cache. It means that it reads/writes to memory every cycle. Practicaly it's not possible due to slow memory if your data is not in cache. You can hide loads and stores if you mix them with arithmetic operations. Good idea is to use PPC timer and test how long code run with lwz/stw, then comment those and run code again. Because of my growing urge for using C++ I have been experimenting with the GCC C++ compiler that came on the PowerUP CD (ppc-amigaos-c++). The problem is that, not even can I not use the IO funcs. of C++, when i try to use the IO functions of PowerUP, a "__Fv" is added to all the symbols, ie. PPCOpen becomes PPCOpen__Fv. Is there a way around this? Does anyone know if there's an alternative C++ compiler for PowerUP? It could also be a porting problem; some stuff not being properly supported by ixemul. The second problem is simple; you just need to export the c++ functions for C. The SAS/C PPC update also has C++, although it seems to be based on a different base than the 68K version. CXC55 is the CX routine for the 68k compiler (when not using the FPU) that compares two doubles. It is not needed for the PPC, since that compare is a single PPC instruction. I would guess that TRANS-FX.o is a 68k object, not a PPC object. I reported several weeks ago that I had a CXERR 390296. Steve and Jim were= kind enough to help me out. It turns out that I was trying to have the same source for the 68K and the PPC. There would be a 68k gui part and a ppc/68k calculation part. I tried using the COMMON option so that I could define globals in the 68k file and the ppc file with no "multiply-defined" errors.
