Hi!

I'm trying to port kaffe and need some help.

Does anyone know, how to use ixemul.library functions with the ppc?

I thought of calling the library functions using CallOS,
but I haven't found an ixemul_lib.fd .

Any ideas?

Greets,

Alex

Under the same circumstances that makes it meaninful to access SysBase from
m68k code. Most notably exec.library library calls.

Holger Jakob has made a bridge that makes this possible. See

Good, because it wouldn't be any good since ixemul.library does not use
standard library call conventions.

Be careful with IF_CACHEFLUSHNO if you're not using the latest ppc.library.
Earlier versions had bugs in the cache handling, forgetting to
flush/invalidate the Caos structure itself. Even as of version 45.20, your
Caos structure must be 32 byte aligned (not documented).

A couple of incompatible versions of SAS/C runelf, two incompatible versions
my early ELF loader for librilc startup code, vbcc's ppcrun and Ralph
Schmidts PPCLoad. And then there's the one Holger Jakob uses for his ixemul
bridge. What's the likelyhood that this is a complete list?

If your PPC startup code is compatible with the LoadSeg() patch, there is no
reason to risk that users dig up an old, obscure ELF loader and yell angrily
at you because loading your apps with it caused a crash at exactly the wrong
point in time.

OK (directories could be used too), but this of course assumes that

1) You're making an m68k version.
2) That you're making only one PPC version.

For example, I'm planning to create separate versions optimised for 604's and
603's, respectively. I'm not too likely to bother about an m68k version
unless there is huge demand.

Why would the average user need or want to find out in the first place? And
if you're not an average user, you can easily and quickly tell with

	Type HEX program_file

(and wouldn't trust something as unreliable as the file name) but most of the
time, you just want to use the program in question for what ever it's purpose
is.

Equally well the user could read in the manual that it is a PPC ELF program,
but they don't have to if they have the LoadSeg() patch installed.
The common standard for program files on Amigas is to have no extension.

The best way is to use my ixemul-libc-bridge. It is available
on http://www.ph-cip.uni-koeln.de/~jakob/

>I thought of calling the library functions using CallOS,

No. PPCCallOS() does not support parameters on stack. You
have to use PPCCallM68k() instead and write a small m68k-program,
which put everything on the stack. The limitations of this method
is that one have to know how many parameters a function has
(eg. printf() and ioctl() don't have a fixed number) and it's
not very fast.

There is an ixemul "bridge", I've not used it but I think you can use it to

Well, if it's compatible with the latest RunElf *and* the LoadSegPatch
*and* people really care to read docs, I can't see a problem at all.

Well, what about xy.603.elf, then ;)

True. Nevertheless do extensions have a tradition on Amiga as well,
and loadable ELF modules *aren't* Amiga programs, anyway 8-)

Sorry for writing this in here, but I thought i should ask this
right here, among ppc developers (Sorry Marcin).

Today I have read in the csa.programmer that steve doesn't continue
supporting the SAS/C updates, so checked the SAS/C page and saw that
he wrote this is the "end of an Era".

I guess all of you will be sad like me when you hear that, but shouldn't
we ask *our* great Steve why he doesn't? Is there anyway to solve the
problem?

I am realy sad, because this is the second time I get shocked because
of SAS/C, first was when my order of 6.50 refused (sold out), and
now the second has happend.

We should do something, at this hard time for our machines, our friends!.

Cheers, Paymaan.

68k _Sun_ workstations, of course. The sparc is a RISC CPU.

You are completely missing that at the time, Sun workstations were about the
hottest things you could get. I doubt that they choose them because they
had the same CPU, so as to save the CPU emulator. For example, remember that
the Amiga port of UAE also uses CPU emulation, just as if it had been running
on a non-m68k CPU.

A quote from the Linux/m68k FAQ=20

Yes, if you really know what you are doing. Jesper Skov writes:

We released the first beta version of a Linux 2.1.79 port to Phase5's
Amiga PowerUp hardware on January 29. A kernel image and kernel
diffs (relative to linux-2.1.79-m68k) can be found at:
 =20
  ftp://sunsite.auc.dk/local/os/linux/680x0/testing/apus/
 =20
The kernel is still in a beta state and is not suitable for users. We
just decided it was time that we got some feedback from other hackers
  - and to let everyone know that APUS (Amiga PowerUp Systems) support
  is a work in progress.
 =20
Incidently, the port has been at its current state for a couple of
months, but we have had some problems with Phase5 which have now been
resolved. Phase5 is very interested in seeing this port completed and
has been very helpful lately. We appreciate this very much.
 =20
The APUS specific changes should be merged into the vger tree
RSN. Progress reports will be posted on the m68k kernel list.
 =20
I will see to that the m68k FAQ is updated on this subject. Please
  refer people to www.linux-m68k.org.

Probably little point. Even Motorola isn't pushing AltiVec to be
the future direction for the PPC. It is a bit annoying really as it
the first break in the IBM, Motorola partnership in the PowerPC
architecture. You know it is really just MMX for PPC, SIMD (single
instruction multiple data) don't offer that much to Intel (other
than I great promotion). Motorola intends this device for DSP
applications to take on the TI C60.

These are not totally my opinions but those from EETimes.
