This is a set of binaries required to run C-News on the Amiga.  If you're
not familiar with NetNews already, then this product is probably not for
you.  Some of the installation assumes that you know something about how
the news process is organized.  Nevertheless, look over the files and with
the help of the news administrator on your feed site, you should be okay.

First, the standard disclaimer:  there isn't one.  If you have a problem
with this package, let me know!!  I'm not "supporting" it in any big way!
It just so happens that I ported C-News to the Amiga and a friend of mine
suggested that I contribute it to Fred Fish.  If you want to inform me
of problems that you're having, or if you think of some enhancement that
you'd like to see, by all means send me some e-mail.

This release is in no way connected with the original author(s) of the
C-News distribution, except that the code is theirs!!  (See the copyright
file which appears herein.)  I do wish to thank those folks, though,
since the code that they wrote was extremely portable.  And I apologize
to them 'cuz in a few spots I swore at the code and found out later
that the problems I'd been having were compiler bugs.  Sorry Geoff and
Henry!  Most of the code from which this package is derived has the
following located within it (but not necessarily all files?!):

The original UUPC product was written in Manx C.  I had attempted to move
it to Lattice because that was the environment that I was familiar with,
but that didn't work out well at all.  Mainly due to differences in the
libraries provided by each compiler manufacturer.  Anyway, this release
is a result of Manx 3.6a, lots of sweat (no, not mixed!), and about 3 weeks
of 60 hours each.  As I ported the code, I had to write UN*X library
routines in order to simulate some function calls.  Due to this, some
features are not implemented.

Remote group monitoring is not functional.  There are no checkgroups or
rmgroup scripts.  The overall structure of C-News is the same, but
some details were changed.  UUPC does the function of "rnews" (this
seemed more efficient that spawning another process to do it); the active
file is *always* cached (unless you just plain run out of memory); there
is *no* support for NNTP access (big deal!); and other miscellaneous
facilities that I didn't think were mainstream enough for me to bother
with.  Basically, it all came down to:  if it was something I didn't
need and it looked difficult, I didn't implement it.

One thing which I did add is the logging in the spool directory.  There
is now a SYSLOG file which has the same format as the HDB .Admin/xferstats
file (basically).

I had planned on providing the C-News documentation with this package,
but I have now decided against it.  You can always get it from a nearby
archive site, if you're desparate.  I have tried to encapsulate my
experience with these products (UUPC and C-News) into readme files in
each of the directories.  They either contain overviews of that directory
or they are suggestions/instructions on how to configure the files in that
directory.

I STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT YOU READ EACH AAA-README FILE AND THE OTHER ASCII
FILES IN THE DIRECTORY!!!  Not doing so could mean some setbacks for you.
Also examine the Dillon shell scripts in the `C' directory; `setup.sh'
performs the assigns that are need, `batch.sh' unbatches ALL news files,
and `onefile.sh' unbatches only one news file.
