WELCOME TO PAGESTREAM 3.0i MARCH 7, 1996
=======================================================================
Choose Macros/View ReadMe.Now to read this from within PageStream3.
(Requires ARexx.)

This is the tenth free update patch to PageStream3. The most
important changes are:
- the implementation of the Pen and Reshape tools;
- the completion of the style tag features;
- new Epson drivers, including drivers for the Epson Stylus Color
  models; and
- addition of CyberGfx support.

Note: you must have CyberGfx software on your system to get more
than 256 colors on screen with PageStream. If you have a CyberGfx
compatible board but don't have the CyberGfx software, you must buy
the software before you can use PageStream in more than 256 colors.
If CyberGfx cannot work on your board, you must buy a compatible
board in order to get more than 256 colors. CyberGfx is the ONLY
24 bit graphic system we will or can support. Only CyberGfx has the
calls required for a 24 bit DTP program.

PAGESTREAM 3.1
--------------
3.0i is the last interim update before 3.1. That will be the
long-awaited free update. After 3.1 is released, that doesn't mean
we're going to stop working. There will also be future feature
upgrades to PageStream after 3.1---we're sticking with the Amiga!

TUTORIAL LESSONS
----------------
Lesson 4 cannot be completed in version 3.0i, sorry.

Lessons 1, 2 and 5 can be done. Please refer to the manual errata to
update your manual before doing a tutorial. Lesson 3 can be done but
note that the color palette cannot be used to set text color at this
time, and that imported text ignores the current font attribute.

CHANGES FROM 3.0h2 to 3.0i
--------------------------
This list is provided for those upgrading from 3.0h2 so that they can
review what has changed.

TEXT:
- Implemented text style (tag) features and fixed related problems:
  - Renaming a style now propagates the style to all text formatted
    with that style.
  - Applying a paragraph style no longer propagates the attributes
of that style to subsequent un-styled text.
  - Implemented the "Next Style" feature.
  - Placing the cursor in text that is tagged with a "Based On"
style will now show the correct style in style lists.
  - Implemented the ability to override a style.
  - Implemented character styles.
  - Attributes are now listed for character styles in the Text Style
    Tags requester.
  - Implemented the + signs in style lists beside styles that are
    currently overridden.
- Fixed known text color problems:
  - Renaming a color now propagates the color to all text formatted
    with that color.
- Implemented font caching. In previous versions, PageStream
allocated memory for fonts as you used them until you ran out of
memory. It now caches the last 10 fonts used. When you use the
11th font, the first one is uncached.
- Changed the <As Is> text displayed in lists when attributes were
indeterminate (see page 25 of the manual) to more specific text:
<Mixed> Means that the selected text or objects have mixed
           attributes.
FontName A fontname above a divider in a font list means that
the font is not currently installed. PageStream will
display the text in another font, but will remember the
font name so that you know which font to add.
Additional text strings will be added as required in the future.
If the font attribute is not mixed, <As Is> or <Mixed> will no
longer be shown in the font popup menu control.
- Fixed the problem with cursor movements being acted upon before
  the last buffered text.
- Fixed the problems with paragraph attributes at the top of linked
columns. (ie, First Line indent didn't work at top of linked
  columns.)
- The page will now change when the cursor is moved to a text frame
  on a different page.
- Improved the scrolling of the page within the window for the
  current cursor position.
- Fixed the hyphenation rules problems; before and after character
  rules were being ignored.
- AGaramond and ABembo Expert families will no longer be re-encoded.
(ie, the characters will now be in the right positions.) Other
Expert families will continue to be re-encoded, so if you use a
different one, contact Soft-Logik Technical Support at
  76004.1676@compuserve.com.
- Fixed a problem with inserting user variables.
- Fixed a serious crash bug with moving to the end of an article
with additional linked frames beyond the current partially filled
  frame.
- Fixed a hyphenation bug with the number of characters allowed
before a hyphen. Note that this fix could change your line breaks!
- Renamed SoftLogik:Engines/English.dictionary to
American.dictionary because it is the American variant of the
dictionary. (Other variants are not available at this time, and
spell checking is only implemented in PageLiner so far.)
- Added the American.hyphenation file to the SoftLogik:Engines
directory. This is an ASCII file containing exceptions to the
hyphenation algorithms. The Edit Hyphenation requester is not
implemented yet, but you can add and remove exceptions manually by
editing this file. (Note that the Break button in Edit Hyphenation
is implemented, so you can type a word into the text gadget and
see how the algorithms would break it.) Note that an improved
version of this file will be included with 3.1, so if you make
changes to it, please make a note of them so that you can change
  the 3.1 file, too.
- Editing a color's values will now update text using that color.

LINKING TEXT FRAMES:
- Linking frames with text in both frames no longer loses the text
  in the second frame.
- Linking frames now updates the document changed status.
- Choosing Link Frames and then clicking on a blank part of the page
will no longer change the mouse pointer from the empty fram pointer
  to the full frame pointer.

OBJECT DRAWING & MANIPULATION:
- Completely implemented the Pen tool!
- Completely implemented the Reshape tool for reshaping paths!
- Completely implemented the Reshape tool for reshaping pictures!
- Partially implemented the Reshape tool for reshaping drawings.
(Object strokes are not cropped---only fills.)
- Partially implemented the Reshape tool for reshaping EPS objects.
(Bitmap previews are not cropped---only the EPS object.)
- Implemented the Reshape tool for reshaping grid objects. (Not in
  manual, new featurette.)
- Copy/paste text frames is fixed! Duplicate/transform text frames
will be fixed in the next version.
- Fixed the scale problem with dissolving scaled drawings.
- Fixed the problem with transforming when the offsets were zero
but scale or rotation was not zero.
- Fixed the problem with resizing drawings with the Edit palette
  or Edit requester.
- Fixed the problem with importing ILUS files containing drawing
  objects.
- Fixed the problem with Distribute when using bounding box and
either left, center or right spacing.
- Fixed the stroke problem with imported Illustrator drawings.
- Editing a color's values will now update objects using that color.
- Fixed a crash bug if you tried to undo the cutting of an object
that had been previously manipulated. (Undo Cut cannot be undone
  in the current version.)
- Fixed the problem with custom colors changing to other named
colors when other attributes were modified in Line/Fill.

OPEN/SAVE/IMPORT/EXPORT:
- When you open a PageStream2 document, a requester will now open
with five options to help you convert the text to use the new
formatting commands in PageStream3. This requester is documented
  in the online help system.
- Fixed the crash bug with Revert to Saved.
- When you open a document, a second progress meter will now appear
after the first one closes while the document is processed into
PageStream's internal format. Some people thought the program
had locked up because this can sometimes be a lengthy process.
- Overall, the time to process a document into PageStream's internal
format is about 8-10% faster for average documents. Processing
most objects is only a small amount faster, but processing paths
is about one third faster. Processing TextFX objects is much
  faster.
- Fixed the problem with opening a document and getting a second
view of the current document instead.
- Changed the default path for Backups to Documents/Backups from
just Backups. If you have already saved your settings, this will
  not affect you.
- NEW FEATURE! Added a PICT filter. This filter can only import
bitmapped pictures from PICT files at this time, but this is the
  most common type.
- Fixed a bug with importing TIFF pictures that were non-24 bit RGB
or non-32 bit CMYK, and with exporting the same. Important: if you
saved out an incorrect TIFF before, the new filter will not be
able to import it back in! Use the previous version of BME and
this filter to save it out in 24 bit RGB or 32 bit CMYK format
  before upgrading to 3.0i.

DOCUMENT STRUCTURE:
- Inserted pages will now have the Show Master Page Objects option
set to In Back instead of Do Not Show.
- Fixed related bugs with showing master page objects and inserting
  pages.

INTERFACE:
- NEW FEATURE! Added support for CyberGfx. You can now work in up to
24 bit mode on a CyberGfx compatible system! Note that the problem
with crashing when changing screen modes and quitting is due to a
bug in the CyberGfx software, not PageStream. This has or will be
  fixed in the next update.
- Redesigned the New Document requester:
  - Removed the Master Page Name and Description, and Document
Description text gadgets. These options can still be set with
the Edit Master Page and Edit Document requesters, but removing
them makes the New Document requester simpler. (This change and
the following are part of the upcoming 3.1 interface, but have
been done now to keep PageStream Amiga and Mac in synch.)
  - Changed the Portrait/Landscape toggle to a Landscape checkbox.
  - Changed the Single/Double toggle to a Double-Sided checkbox.
- Redesigned the Edit Master Page requester:
  - Changed the Portrait/Landscape toggle to a Landscape checkbox.
  - Changed the Single/Double toggle to a Double-Sided checkbox.
- Redesigned the Tabs requester:
  - Unselected tab stops are now gray, while the selected tab stop
icon is black. The triangles that formerly indicated the
selected tab stop are no longer shown.
  - Arrow gadgets are now provided to scroll the tab ruler; the
scrollbar has been removed so that the tab ruler can be
positioned closer to the text you wish to modify.
  - The tab ruler now scales to match the page size. The requester
does not open above the column, but can be moved above it.
  - The Del key can now be used to delete the selected tab.
  - You can drag the selected tab to scroll the tab ruler.
- Redesigned the Set Guides requester:
  - Unselected guides are now gray, while the selected guide icon is
black. The triangle that formerly indicated the selected guide
    is no longer shown.
  - Arrow gadgets are now provided to scroll the guide ruler.
  - The Del key can now be used to delete the selected guide.
  - You can drag the selected guide to scroll the guide ruler.
- Guides are now shown as solid lines, rather than dashed lines.
- Guide and grid colors may now be set to any RGB color, not just
one of the 4 interface colors. On a low color screen, you may
not notice any immediate change in their colors due to the way
pen colors are allocated on the Amiga.
- You can now set the guide and grid color as part of your program
defaults with the View Preferences requester, as well as the
  page shadow color.
- Document rulers now draw 50% faster.
- Ruler ticks no longer crowd together at low magnifications.
- The vertical ruler is now two pixels narrower.
- The splash screen (startup and About requesters) now displays
much faster. The picture now has the actual logo colors, and they
look best on 16 color and better screens.
- Fixed the problem with the Auto Kerning command becoming unchecked
when cancelling the Auto Hyphenation requester.
- Removed the "framed" options from the Edit Group and Edit Compound
object requesters, because these objects are not framed.
- Removed the unimplemented Apply button from Paragraph Format. It
didn't make sense that this requester should have one and other
attribute requesters didn't. (Tabs has one because settings tabs
  without it can be difficult.)

PRINTING:
- The user is once again prevented from modifying documents during
printing. (This was accidentally changed in recent versions, and
this could lead to disastrous results.)

POSTSCRIPT PRINTING:
- Fixed arrowhead printing to PostScript printers.
- Fixed the quotesingle problem with DMF fonts such as LinePrinter.

HEWLETT-PACKARD PRINTER DRIVER:
- added HP310, 320, 600C and 850C models to the model list.
- implemented RET (Resolution Enhancement).
- changed the default margins for most DeskJet models. You may have
to adjust your custom offsets if you have set them.

EPSON PRINTER DRIVER:
- Completely rewrote the Epson driver to take into account the
  varying margins of newer models.
- Added XPD files that describe Epson printer standards in the
  SoftLogik:Printers/XPD directory. XPD/EpsonModels is a table of
each model and the XPD file that matches it. All XPD files are in
ASCII format, so you can add your own. If you add or modify one,
or use an Epson compatible model that is not in the table, please
provide us with the details via email (76004.1676@compuserve.come)
so that we can update our master files.
- Added many more brands and models to the Epson compatible model
list. If you had selected a Generic model, please reset your
settings because there are additional generic variations now.
- NEW FEATURE! Added the Epson Stylus Color series to the Epson
  driver.
- Printing on Esc/P2 printers (most post 1991 printers) should now
be faster. It won't send data for blank lines, and blank lines are
  now cued up.)
- Printing on all Epson printers should now be faster. It no longer
dithers blank data at the end of each row. (So if the row is
  blank, it won't dither anything.)

FARGO PRINTER DRIVER:
- Modified the Fargo Primera Pro wax option to look for the correct
file. Please report any problems with this option.

PREFERENCE PRINTER DRIVER:
- Made a change in the way the driver sets the paper size. This
should fix a problem with some Preference printers.

MACROS:
- IMPORTANT: Changed parameters for: display, settoolmode,
  displaygrid, displayguides, insertname.
- New Commands: createpoint, deletepoint, editpoint, movepoint,
  nudgepoint, selectpoint, splitpoint.
- New Parameters for: nudge, move, display, settoolmode, print,
  createdrawing, addpoint, displaygrid, displayguides,
  getgriddisplay, getguidedisplay, setviewdefaults.
- Removed arcto and arcnto parameters from addpoint.
- Removed the highdata parameter from addarexxgadget. Remove this
from any scripts you have created.
- Removed unused parameters from selecttext.
- Corrected the parameters for editgroup.
- Reformatted the entire script command reference in the online
help system. Corrected numerous typos and changed the format to
make it easier to maintain. The files are a bit shorter now so
  they should load faster.

BME:
- Implemented an internal clipboard in BME. BME now copies to the
system (external) clipboard only when another program needs to
copy from it. The implications are:
  - copy/paste inside of BME is =much= faster than before.
  - pasting into another program when BME's internal clipboard
contains newer data than the system clipboard will be delayed
until BME has copied its data to the clipboard.
- Changed the way pictures are displayed. Instead of drawing one
row of pixels at a time, BME now displays the pictures in blocks.
- Very large pictures should display a bit faster now. (Technical
note: BME uses chunky only now, no more planar.)
- NEW FEATURE! BME now has virtual memory support built-in! If you
load a picture larger than available memory, it will use your
hard drive for virtual memory as required.
- Fixed a serious problem with pasting a bitmap larger than the
current image. This could also affect rotating a selection so that
the selection was now larger than the image in one direction.
- Changed the Emboss filter so that the lightsource is in the upper
  left corner.
- Fixed a problem that would crash if you moved an area whose edges
  were outside the visible region.
- BME now has a black frame around the picture.
- Improved conversion between color depths.

PAGELINER:
- The program now looks for the American.dictionary file instead of
  English.dictionary.

UNIMPLEMENTED FEATURES
----------------------
- Project/Append
- Project/Print: Plate Control
- Edit/Find/Replace, Find Again, Replace Again
- Edit/Spell Check, Lookup
- Layout/Document Structure (You can't drag yet; click for now.)
- Layout/Information
- Layout/Facing Pages
- View/Greek Text
- Type/Type Style>>Outline
- Type/Line/Fill (Text stroke not done to screen or non-PS.)

- Toolbox/Edit palette for multiple selected objects
- Misc: Fencing, Drop Caps, Widow/Orphan, bitmap fills to screen
/non-PS, multiple strokes, Auto Backup, All/In Use toggles, Undo
  for some Object features.

KNOWN PROBLEMS:
- You cannot apply colors to text using the Color Palette.
- You cannot customize a type style's color/line/fill attributes
  within a style tag.
- The Word, WordPerfect, Illustrator EPS and Freehand EPS filters
are not complete. They work to a limited degree but don't support
  all attributes or file versions.
- Resizing rotated objects does not work as expected.
- Rotated text does not work properly.
- Typing past the end of a frame will not advance the cursor to
the next frame if the next frame is on another page.
- Spot colors are separated as process colors. Color seps are not
  very good yet.
- Applied bold and italics aren't done for non-Compugraphic fonts.
- Only pictures should be left external at this time.

NOTES:
- If you need to force a screen redraw because PageStream didn't
properly redraw the screen, choose Macros/Refresh Window. This
is assigned to F10 as the default.
- For most Canon printers, choose the Epson driver from Printing
  Preferences' Type popup gadget.
- The Type/Weight command was removed because it was redundant.

BONUS FEATURES NOT IN THE MANUAL
--------------------------------
- New Emboss and Sharpen effects for BME have been added! Refer to the help
  system for information.
- You can now do math in text gadgets in PageStream3. For example, if a
box's left coordinate is 8.125" and you want to move it right by 0.333"
but can't add that in your head, just enter the following into the Edit
palette's appropriate text gadget: 8.125"+0.333. When youpress Tab or
Return, the expression will be evaluated and its sum of 8.458" will
appear in the text gadget. The following math operators are supported:
  + add; - subtract; * multiply; / divide; () parenthetical expressions.
Additionally, `pi' (3.1416...) may be entered.
- Added two new popup gadgets to the Edit palette Character view for type
size and width. This makes changing the type size more convenient.
- Added more preset type sizes and widths to the Font requester scrolling
  lists.
- Added four new default page sizes for envelopes and compact discs to
the New Document page size popup gadget. If you have a page size default
  request, let us know.
- For large screens only (900-1000 pixels wide): Added Insert Date and
Insert Time icons to the toolbar. If your document window is not wide
enough, you will not be able to see these icons; they are just a bonus
  for those with large screens.
- The Undo and Redo commands will change names to reflect what would be
undone or redone. ie, Undo Move, Undo Scale.
- New "Mail Merge" script. See the help system for more information.
- New "Print Font Specimens" (FontSpec.rexx) script.
- New "Place Graphic At" (PlaceGraphicAt.rexx) script. This will import
graphics in a similar fashion to PageStream2.2. Shift drag to maintain
  aspect ratio is supported.
- New PICT filter. This filter can only import bitmapped pictures from
PICT files at this time, but this is the most common type.
- PageStream now supports CyberGfx graphic cards. You can now work in up
to 24 bit mode on a CyberGfx compatible system!
- BME now has virtual memory support built-in! If you load a picture
larger than available memory, it will use your hard drive for virtual
  memory as required.
