Introduction

It's just a normal day using Scalos, you decide to delete a couple of files off your hard disk. Not a problem, just open the window, select the icons and Right-Amiga D.. up pops the little window telling you that you are deleting x drawers but you don't really pay attention to it... and you have forgotten to deselect the drive icon..

We all know what happens next, but at best you will have to break out the undelete tools. Many people I know have ended up in this situation (who hasn't sooner or later?) but under the old Workbench you were stuck unless you hacked... Along comes Scalos, the best thing to happen to Workbench since 3.0 was released, but it's still very easy to fall into the same trap.. This replacement for the Scalos Delete.module should solve it once and for all!

Among it's features are:

  • Warns you, in no uncertain terms, if you have told it to delete a volume.
  • INTERACTIVE PANIC STOP BUTTON!!
  • It lists the files and directories you have selected.
  • It can move files to ANY trashcan/ backup location.
  • Optional confirmation of file and/or directory delete.
  • Progress display

Oh, and the icons are not of my doing. The Delete.module icon is from AESicon6.lha and the ScalosDelete drawer icon is from AESicon7.lha, both available from aminet

ScalosDelete and GNU

When I started ScalosDelete I thought I'd covered most of the functions people wanted. I was wrong. I received a fairly large number of requests for functions for future versions, especially requests for animations, subdirectory/file counting and 'multi-delete' facilities. As you can tell from reading the history though, I've only been able to implement a small number of the requested functions - some have proved more complex than I anticipated and others I simply hadn't got time to implement. I don't know how much time I'll be able to devote to the program for some time, I'm spending the majority of my hours doing commercial programming work and it's likely to keep me occupied for the best part of the next 6 or 8 months at least. The only sensible option I can see to prevent the whole project stagnating completely is to release the full source under the GNU GPL. Of course, doing this causes it's own problems: the last thing I want to see happen is several parallel developments implementing the same feature or people trying to add features to hopelessly out of date versions of the code. Therefore I request that any developers who wish to add features to the source should contact me before doing so to ensure they have the latest versions of the code, and that they send me the code for any modified version they create to pass on to other interested developers. Note that this is purely voluntary, I can't force you to do this under the terms of the GNU GPL, but it would probably make everyone's life easier in the long run. If you are a developer interested in working on the code, send me an email: I'll be happy to help with any questions you may have.
