Provided you have followed the installation instructions, you start this delete module in exactly the same way as the original: select the files and directories you want to delete and select "Delete" from the icon menu.

Once loaded, the delete module will check all the icons you have selected and warn you if any of them is really a volume. If it finds a volume in your selection list, it will ask you to confirm that you want to proceed. Assuming you do, or there are no volumes selected, a window similar to the one on the right will appear (click on it for a full size view). The "Files" page displays a list of the files and directories you have marked to be deleted as well as a summary of the number of files (and their total size) and the number of directories to be deleted.

If you have selected one or more directories then the "Details" button will be available. If you select this then the delete module will count all the files and directories contained within the directories you have selected. Note that this could take a long time if there is a large number of files in the directories you have selected, so only select it if you aren't in a rush!

The "Prefs" page (shown on the left, click on it for a big picture) allows you to change the behaviour of Delete.module. The options are

• Use Trashcan? If selected, the files and directories you have selected are moved to the trashcan directory (see below) rather than being completely removed from your system
• Confirm dir delete? When this is selected, you must confirm every directory deletion. If you cancel a directory delete, all files within the directory are left unchanged.
• Confirm file delete? Select this and you have to confirm every file deletion. While very safe, this option can be a little trying on the left mouse button!
• Quiet Start As a default, when ScalosDelete starts it displays an about window giving details of the author and it's status under the GNU GPL. To prevent the window from appearing, select this option. I decided to use this method as it ensures that the message is displayed at least the first time you use the program, but by selecting this you can prevent it from appearing again.
• Trashcan location This lets you select any directory to use as a trashcan.

Unlike previous versions of ScalosDelete, the latest version does not automatically save the preferences. You need to select "Save" or "Use" for the changes to take effect over multiple calls ("Save"d preferences survive over a reboot, "Use"d ones only take effect until the next reboot.)

If you click on "delete" button then the status group appears and Delete.module starts to do it's job. You can hit the "STOP!" button at any time during the process to halt Delete.module in it's tracks. The progress gauge is slightly more complex than previous versions as it's function changes depending upon whether the "Details" button has been pressed or not. If you press the Details button before clicking on delete then the progress gauge shows you the exact progress based on the number of bytes deleted and the number remaining. If you did not click on details then the progress bar displays the percentage of selected files or directories that have been removed, regardless of the size of the files or the contents of the directories. The latter display mode is considerably less exact than the former, but it does mean that you don't need to compile the details of all the selected files and directories.
