It is to scale, in proportion, and has every detail on it that the actual TV model has. It was modelled in Lightwave/Modeler 4, but should work in previous Lightwave versions. It weighs in at around 14,000 polygons, with nineteen brush maps, so you need around 16-18 meg to render it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Who am I? I am a budding 18-year old 2D/3D graphic artist. I started with some wonderful programs called "Cheese!" and "GEOS Paint" on the C64. I then bought an A500 and got hold of DPaint 3 and 4. I started 3D graphics work with Sculpt 4D, progressing to versions of Imagine. A A4000 beckoned, and finally I scraped up the cash for Lightwave 4. At college though I have to use Mac and PC software (PhotoShop et al. Boo!). My work is regularly used for video titling and editing, and I have even been comissioned by a local company to do some work for them. I now have ten years worth of experience with computer graphics, on Amiga, Mac and PC platforms, and can honestly say that all my best work has been created using the Amiga. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Runabout Uss Ganges. This model is very accurate. In the process of its construction I used the model kit, plans from the Making of DS9 book, photos and other references from DS9 episodes. Measurements were taken and used in Modeler. The result is that every gubbins, nook and cranny has been modelled to a very high accuracy. Installation of the object. --------------------------- After decrunching the archive to the RAM disk, just copy the Runabout directory to wherever you want. Lightwave will probably moan that it can't find files when you load in the default.lws, so you'll have to re-direct it to the right place. All the maps etc. are stored in the Runabout/Images drawer. If it's any help, the default directory structure for the .lwo files is Toaster:NewTek/Objects/Space/Runabout, with the maps and stuff in Toaster:NewTek/Objects/Space/Runabout/Images. Once you've loaded the Default.lws successfully, use the "Save All Objects" button to save the new locations of the maps to the model. TestRender.IFF - Piccy of the model zooming through space. Default.lws - The default scene file for Lightwave 4. LW3 users: The scene file in LW4 is different as it now saves null objects, which apparently were saved with the object file in LW3. The default scene may not load into LW3. If this is the case, sorry, just load the models into Lightwave, parent everything to "CargoSection.lwo" and create your own motion path. Note: The Warp nacelles use the new "Glow" effect in LW4 to get a cool look. In LW3 they will probably just render light blue, ignoring that effect. You could always add some light sources with a flare to simulate a glow. On a 25Mhz 030 each frame takes about 15 minutes to render at medium res, no anti- aliasing. (With blur and low A-A it takes an hour, but looks great!). Therefore turn off these effects if you don't have an 040/060 or endless patience, as the default scene anim is 120 frames. To create the cool panelling on the sides of the Runabout, a high contrast diffusion map was used in preferance to actually modelling the tiny gaps between each panel. The ridges in the nacelles, the vertical insets in the front and some other parts also use a high contrast diffusion map to create the tiny details. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT This model is distributed as FREEWARE. I hold the copyright to my work (not, of course, to the actual design or shape of the model, as that is owned by Paramount), and I am allowing others to use it without charge. I do ask though that I am credited with modelling the object in any animations/productions that are produced. This model is supplied "as is", and I cannot be held responsible for any damage resulting from using the contents of this archive or otherwise. This archive and the other files on this disk may only be re-distributed IF: 1) It is totally complete, including this ReadMe file, the two GangesPics and the ReadMeFirst! file. 2) NONE of the models/maps/files are altered IN ANY WAY WHATSOEVER. 3) No more than the price of a disk is charged. This model and assorted files has taken me the better part of two months to create, so if you wish to reward me for my troubles please feel free! Anyone who contacts me and pays at least the cost of return postage will receive the Optional Sensor Cluster object, plus some more maps and stuff to turn the Uss Ganges into another Runabout seen on DS9. If you do this PLEASE INCLUDE A DISK or I cannot reply as it gets too expensive. Comments on this model (nice ones! ;-) ) are also welcomed. This is the first object that I have released to "test the water". So, if I get some replies/ comments etc. it will spur me into finishing a huge Deep Space Nine model to complement the Runabout.
